Luna felt every ounce of her just freeze as she watched the figures coming through the door. She couldn't speak. She couldn't breathe. She couldn't see or hear anything but them. The first pair she saw was a tall, dark-haired male covered in muscle and a blonde girl whose beauty could put any supermodel to shame. One intimidating despite his playful smirk, the other cold except for a smile she would direct at the guy beside her. Next, a male with a pained expression and honey blonde curls appeared, trailing just behind a short, dark-haired girl. She didn't know what to think, except that she thought she was going crazy. She blinked. No, they were there. Half of the humans in the room were staring at them, so that threw that worry out the window. But... There was no way this was possible. The subjects of her art were alive. How are they here? How are they real?
Finally, catching her breath, Luna asked. "Who... who are they?"
Jessica noticed Luna's eyes following the strange people and smirked. "Those are the Cullens, Dr. and Mrs. Cullen's adopted children. The blonde girl is Rosalie Hale, and the big dark-haired guy is Emmett Cullen. They're like, a thing. I'm not even sure that legal."
"Jess, they're not actually related," Angela revealed.
The brunette scoffed. "Yeah! But they live together... it's just weird."
"Not really. I know a bunch of couples who live together," Luna claimed. "Besides, as Angela said, they're not related. It's just that no one but you seems to be worried about it."
Bella nearly chocked on her food as she held back a laugh from beside her, as did Angela and Eric. Jessica glared at them before looking at the redhead. How dare she put her on the spot like that?
"Anyway," Jessica continued, trying to move past Luna's previous comment. "The dark-haired girl is Alice Cullen, she's really weird. She's dating Rosalie's twin brother Jasper Hale, the blonde who looks like he's in pain."
Luna felt a vein pop in her head at the insults. "First of all, everybody has some quirk that others consider to be weird. So, calling her weird really has no effect on anyone. Second, Jasper might be going through some things right now, so don't go assuming things when you don't know the full story."
As soon as she finished talking, Luna turned back to the nearby table where the Cullen siblings now frequented. Rosalie and Emmett kept their eyes on each other, off in their own little world and oblivious to everything else. She then averted her eyes to Alice, who watched her with a big grin full of cheer. The mermaid smiled back, only with more shyness at the sudden attention on her. Jasper was last, his full attention set on her. Luna struggled to make any movement as they maintained eye contact. She felt like a puppet, and Jasper was holding her in place from pulling her strings. Alice must have noticed since Jasper finally looked away to speak to her in hushed tones. Luna could just barely hear what sounded like bells, but every other voice in the room clouded her hearing.
"Edward."
Bella's distant, monotone voice drew Luna's attention back to her table. She saw Angela and Eric look away like they walked into a conversation and made it awkward. What the hell?
Wondering what all the fuss was about, the redhead looked behind her and nearly did a double-take. Holy crap. The young man walking through the door was an Adonis. His messy hair was an unusual bronze shade that complemented his pale face perfectly, his facial features smooth and angular with no flaws. Luna had never seen such perfection.
"And that is Edward Cullen," Jessica pointed out. "He's totally gorgeous, obviously. But don't get your hopes up. He and Bella are a thing. At least, they're supposed to be."
How many times did you get rejected? Luna raised an eyebrow as Bella sent what was probably the fiercest glare Jessica's way. She snickered under her breath at the prep, who simply held her hands up in surrender. Note to self Jessica, don't say that again.
Luna briefly glanced back at the Cullens, only to find Edward scowl at her like she had some kind of infectious disease. She felt a sharp punch to the heart at the obvious sign of dislike. Looking away, she could hear a few people scolding him for "being rude", but Luna tried not to let it get to her. She wasn't going to let whatever his problems were get to her. She had no room for hate in her life.
Because of that, Luna thought about what to do for her drawings. She needed to finish them, to give them color, bring them to life as they were now.
At the end of lunch, Edward dispersed from his siblings, racing out of the door with an eager but distressed Bella right behind him. Luna shook her head as she gathered her trash together and threw them in the bins. They reminded her of when Tiffany followed Miriam around like a puppy dog. Though, she couldn't help but notice her stomach felt like it was starting to curl into knots. What the hell must have happened for a couple to act like that?
As she made her way to her next class, Luna found the other Cullens watching her. All of them were mesmerizing. So undeniably beautiful. It was a bit strange that all of them were adopted, considering they shared the same pale skin and rich liquid-gold eyes. But as she watched them, she couldn't help this new sense of warmth radiating off them. Nor could she describe the weird sweetness that permeated her nose. They looked... expecting?
The redhead was confused. Why were they watching her like that? Did they suspect something? Why did she feel a weird heat starting to build in the pit of her-
"Luna!"
The redhead jerked back into reality when Angela popped up next to her. "Are you okay?"
The little mermaid blushed. "Oh, yeah, sorry. I must have zoned out."
Angela smiled. "Don't worry about it. So, what's your next class?"
A few class periods later, Luna was in her last class, English. She was switching between doing her assignments and working on her sketches. She managed to put the final touches on Rosalie and Alice's drawings, smiling at the lovely contrast between the golden-haired supermodel and the black-haired pixie. True goddesses, they were. She was just finishing Jasper's skin when she heard the classroom door open.
"Mr. Cullen, you're late."
Luna looked up at the front, fearing she would give herself whiplash with how fast her head moved. She didn't know what unnatural force caused her to act so strangely, but whatever it was seemed interested in Edward Cullen. The bronze-haired Adonis didn't seem to be aware of it since he kept his attention on Mr. Berty as he handed him a slip of paper.
"My apologies. Doctor's appointment." The redhead resisted the urge to shiver in her seat. God, even his voice sounded perfect. She shook her head.
Jesus, Luna, get a hold of yourself. Remember, he has a girlfriend!
"Hmph. It must be nice having a doctor for a father. All right. You'll be sharing a table with the new student, Ms. Taylor. Play nice."
At that moment, Edward met Luna's gaze. It was now topaz vs. chocolate. Luna stared up at him with a sweet smile, giving a gentle wave to try and soften the ice in his eyes. No luck. Sighing, the redhead just tried to settle her newly-awoken anxiety as the young man sat down next to her.
When that didn't work, Luna went back to her routine of working and coloring her drawings. She didn't pay attention to her neighbor (in spite of the strange tension blooming in her chest) as she focused on the strands of Jasper's curly blonde hair. Because of this, she didn't notice Edward taking a glance at her sketchpad when she wrote a few mandatory notes from Mr. Berty. She also didn't notice the obvious look of surprise in his face when he noticed the subject of the drawing. When she started to work on creating the shade of gold in Jasper's irises, she started to feel a slight discomfort in her head.
Rubbing her temples, Luna continued to color until the soft but intense topaz shade she mixed was accurate. But it didn't stop there. As she worked on creating some slight shadows around the eyes, the discomfort came back again. And again. And again. It got to the point that Luna became so frustrated that she ended up kicking the table. She hissed in pain.
"Is there something you would like to share with the class, Ms. Taylor?"
Luna grimaced. "No, sir. I'm sorry for interrupting."
Mr. Berty returned to the front with a warning of detention. Huffing, Luna looked over at Edward, who was paying full attention to his assignment. Now, she was unnerved. Whatever was going on with her was coming from his direction. Something definitely not right here. Sending him a questioning face, the mermaid went back to her drawings.
About thirty minutes before the end of class, Luna was in the middle of finishing up the scars on Jasper. They were strange scars, varying in size and shaped like opposing crescent shapes that looked vaguely like teeth marks etched into his complexion. Staring at them in her artwork, she couldn't help but wonder.
What happened to you, Mr. Hale?
Luna was about to add one last highlight to the scars when a sharp pain pushed into her skull. Gasping, the redhead struggled not to scream as the same discomfort doubled, no tripled, as she attempted to fight back. It felt like someone was trying to get inside her head.
"Ms. Taylor?!"
Luna couldn't hear Mr. Berty. She couldn't even hear the worried whispers of her classmates. She thought her head was gonna explode. Holding her head, Luna cried at the top of her lungs, desperate to try and release at least some of the pain. And just as soon as she did, the foreign intruder retreated. Losing control of her body, Luna accidentally threw some of her pencils off the desk. A trickle of blood started to streak out of her nose as her senses shut down, her limp form falling from her seat onto the cold floor beneath her.
"Oh my god!"
"Someone call 911!"
The last thing Luna saw before darkness consumed her was the slightly blurry, worried and surprised face of Edward Cullen.
