"Drinking alone's as bad as shitting in company." Zoltan Chivay The Witcher 2: Assassins Of Kings
Greene sighed. The decision to come to Heaven with Mike was impulsive. But they didn't regret it. Yet. The change would be good for them.
It took them almost a month to take care of everything before leaving.
They had been driving for hours and they still haven't reached the city. They left the weird shrub steppes far behind them. Soon they were driving through a road running through grasslands.
Mike was completely focused on driving. It was a long time until they reached the city walls.
Sam was busy reading a book she had taken so she would have something to do until they reached Heaven. He didn't know what it was about. It was a different one than she had been reading the day earlier. The previous one was about ninjas or something. It wasn't his thing so he didn't even check it out.
This one seemed to be about pirates though. It seemed much more interesting. He would ask her later if he could borrow it once she was done.
The truck started slowing down.
Sam closed her book and put it away. Greene looked at the street. The area they were in didn't look great but it didn't look too bad either.
It wasn't one of the rich parts of the city or one of the really poor ones.
The truck stopped next to the house. It had two floors and it was very blue.
He wasn't complaining. It was a nice color. Not as good as green though. Green was the best.
Seriously though who the hell had painted it? Greene's eyes started to sting if he looked at it for too long.
"So, this is the place," Green mused. It didn't look like much.
"Yeah. Let's hope no one screwed us over," Sam said. That would be very annoying to her.
They got out of the truck.
"Finally, we're here," Mike sighed in relief. For a moment he thought he got lost. This city could be like a maze sometimes.
"Holy crap. My ass hurts! How long have we been driving for?" Sam groaned. Sitting that long in a vehicle tended to be uncomfortable. Her question went unanswered.
Greene looked at the blue building. A strange feeling went through his back.
"Don't know why but I felt the prickles down my spine," he said. It was probably nothing.
"You're just imagining things," Sam said. Greene was simply behaving like an idiot again. It happened quite often, unfortunately. Then she looked at the house.
She didn't feel anything on her spine like Greene but she did feel a little uneasy. That was mostly because they weren't far from what was considered the bad neighborhood.
She should probably remind the guys that they needed to be watching out for anyone trying to steal their truck. They didn't want to be stuck here without transport after all. That would be terrible.
Mike warily peeked his head into the building.
When they bought the property, they made a serious mistake.
They did it online before coming to Heaven. They did it because the price was low and the pictures didn't seem fake. It seemed absolutely moronic now that they thought about it but the decision to come was made quickly and they decided that if they were going to be staying in the city they might as well stay in a proper house. The guy they bought it from was considered trustworthy. They called some of his former clients.
He hoped that someone hadn't fucked them over.
It looked like no one did this one time. Everything looked alright. Right behind the door was a big living room. Nice blue walls, a TV, a couch, a table, and chairs. It looked exactly like in the pictures.
There was a door leading into the basement. It was beneath the stairs.
The stairs were leading onto the second floor. There was a bathroom there and a few rooms. They had all the space they needed and more.
"It looks, good guys! We can come in!" He shouted at his friends. He honestly had expected it to look much worse.
He entered dragging his luggage with him.
"Greene go get the rest of the luggage!"
Greene rolled his eyes. Of course, he had to do this.
There was no way he could do this alone fast enough.
"Sure. Sam help me."
"Nope."
Sam wasn't feeling helpful.
"Come on don't be a dick."
"Nope."
What did he have to do to convince her? He figured it out a second later.
"I won't take the room with the nicest view."
"Ok then."
That worked. She liked to have a nice view and a good view of the whole street would be good enough.
A moment later they were dragging the rest of the luggage in. Immediately after that, while Mike was busy with opening some luggage, they ran up the stairs to pick the best rooms for themselves. The ones with the best view at least.
Sam immediately tossed her luggage into her room and jumped onto the bed.
Then she got up. She pulled her pistol out of the luggage and put it on the night table. It was better to have it close by.
She looked out of the window.
She had a nice view of the whole street from her window.
Maybe this place wouldn't be so bad after all.
Unpacking took her about twenty minutes.
She looked out of the window again.
The door of the house opposite of theirs closed. She didn't remember anyone going towards it.
It was probably just one of their new neighbors. Someone might have just as well opened the door to look outside.
She realized she was getting a little paranoid after what happened at that fuel station. She was jumping at shadows everywhere.
She needed to relax a little. She should try playing a few games with Mike and Greene.
They brought a games console and from the talk, she had with Mike on the way to Heaven she knew that he was good at some of the games they had.
Well, at least he said so. She would check his skills later. She was pretty good herself.
Sam heard something from the room next to hers. She listened carefully for a moment.
What the hell was Greene doing?
Mike heard a thumping coming from the ceiling and looked up. What the hell was Greene doing up there? It wasn't Sam. He was sure of that.
"Greene what are you doing!?" he shouted.
What was that idiot doing? He better not have broken anything.
Greene jumped up and down on his bed grinning like a loon.
What? Every person behaved like a kid sometimes and this bed was great.
He got higher and higher with each jump.
He jumped up one last time.
He miscalculated a bit.
And promptly hit the ceiling.
Mike sighed when he heard a muffled thump and then the sound of something heavy falling onto the floor above him.
He had just finished setting up the console. He couldn't wait until he could finally relax a little and play. Sam said she was pretty good and he wanted to see if it was true.
"That idiot."
He went up to Greene's room to see if he needed help.
Green groaned. He heard footsteps coming towards him and raised his head. He saw someone. Although in his current state he wasn't sure who it was.
He raised his head from the floor.
"Mike is that you?" he asked dully.
It wasn't hard for him to figure out what happened.
"You're an idiot," Mike decided.
"I'm not."
Yes, he was. Sometimes at least.
"Yes, you are. Especially when doing something like this. What are you five years old?"
"There is a child in every one of us," Greene murmured absently.
His head fell back to the floor.
The start of their life in the city was just great. Mike wondered if they were going to survive even a month here.
