Song of the Chapter: Pokémon X and Y Gym Battle theme by I Don't Know Who Wrote This Song.
I own nothing but the story.
Percy said goodbye to the Professor, Tierno, and Trevor before going off to route four. He went through the tunnel and breathed in the beautiful air created by the many flowers.
He took a couple of steps forward and suddenly heard someone say "Whoa! You've got a Pokémon!"
Percy stopped and looked at the person who said it. It was some kid in shorts.
He looked around and said "Uh … you talking to me?"
The kid rolled his eyes and said "Of course I am. Now, let's battle!"
He threw out a Pokéball, and a Fletchling came out.
Percy was surprised. He had never been told to go to battle with an eight-year-old kid before. "Uh … go, Froakie."
He threw his Pokéball and Froakie hopped out.
"Hey, how do you have a Pokémon?" Percy asked the kid. "Aren't you supposed to be at least ten to get one?"
The kid stared at him blankly before saying "Fletchling! Use tackle!"
Fletchling rammed itself into Froakie and Percy's jaw dropped. "I asked you a question!" he said. "That was just - "
"Hey, we're in a battle."
Percy rolled his eyes and said "Froakie, use … bubble."
Froakie shot bubbles from his mouth, and they hit the Fletchling, causing some damage.
"Alright, Fletchling! Use growl!"
The Fletchling growled adorably at Froakie, who was a bit intimidated, letting his attack power go down.
"Hey, Froakie?" Percy said. "How about using tackle?"
Froakie nodded determinedly and rammed its body into Fletchling.
Fletchling flew a few feet away and landed on the ground, unconscious.
"Huh," Percy said. That was easier than he expected.
"Alright, you won," the kid said, pulling out some money and handing it to Percy.
He looked at it. "24 smackeroonies. Awesome. Wait, that's in yen. Wait, so how much is it in U.S. dollars? Wait, this is Pokémon France, so is it the French currency? Hold on … "
He turned to the kid. "Hey, kid, you got a pencil and paper?"
The kid he beat pulled the two things out of his backpack and gave them to Percy.
For the next few hours, he sat on the ground, trying to work out the math. This was normally something Annabeth did, but she wasn't there, and he was incredibly curious as to the value of the Pokédollar.
After a few hours, he reached a total of 0.22 U.S. dollars.
So he was broke.
"Well," he said, getting up. "Time to grind for money and experience."
~some more hours later~
He finally left route four and went into Santalune city, tired and starving after making money and leveling up Froakie, who was now a healthy level of fourteen. This was most definitely not done by bullying kids, and he was able to keep his pride (look, it didn't count if they were fighting him with their Pokémon. And he was still wondering how they got a Pokémon if they're younger than ten!). His current amount of Pokédollars was thirty-eight U.S. dollars and forty-one cents.
Percy looked around, checking if there was anywhere to get some food. Unfortunately, there wasn't.
"Not even a grocery store?!" Percy exclaimed. "How do these people survive?!"
"We get food at Lumiose," a person who heard him said.
His head drooped and his shoulders slacked. "Of course. Good ol' Lumiose."
He spotted a boutique and saw that they were selling bags. "Actually, I do need one."
He went in and then saw the price tag, which added up to twenty-six U.S. dollars.
"Yeah, no," he said, leaving for Lumiose City.
He walked through the tunnel and went to the first restaurant he saw, Restaurant Le Nah.
Percy went in and found that the meals were twenty-seven U.S. dollars. He would have looked elsewhere for food, but he was hungry, so he paid the price and received an onion soup, which he quickly devoured.
He left and went to route four and back to Santalune City. He decided to try and look for some water types since he would've preferred to have at least two Pokémon before taking on the gym, but no water types were found.
Percy walked into the Pokémon Center to heal up Froakie and found Tierno there with a boy he hadn't met before.
"Oh, hey Percy!" Tierno said, seeing him.
Percy waved a little. "Uh, hi. I'm Percy."
The boy held out his hand. "Hey there. I'm Calem."
"Calem also just got his Pokémon," Tierno said. "He got a Froakie too!"
"Oh, nice," Percy said.
"How's your journey going so far?" Calem asked.
Percy thought about how he was stuck for hours doing math and stuck for some more hours grinding and making money.
"It's been alright. You?"
Calem held up three Pokéballs. "I was able to get three Pokémon. Other than that, very new. I've never even explored much, so going on a journey through Kalos is a bit much."
Percy nodded. "Yeah, it's real weird. Uh, were you going to Nurse Joy?"
"Oh, no," he said, stepping aside. "Sorry."
Percy handed his Froakie over to Nurse Joy. "It's alright."
"You only have one Pokémon?" Tierno asked. "It's been a whole day."
"I would actually like to be a strictly water-type only trainer," Percy said, "and there's not much around here, so I have to make the best of it with Froakie."
Calem nodded. "That seems like a difficult challenge. You're brave for taking it on."
Percy shrugged. "Don't know about 'brave.'"
Nurse Joy handed him back his Pokémon and Percy went to the door. "Well, it was nice to meet you, Calem," Percy said.
Calem nodded. "You too."
He left and decided to try and face the bug-type gym.
He entered the building and found himself in a small room with a pole leading to an underground section.
Percy looked at the one Pokémon he had and took a deep breath, grabbing onto the pole and sliding down.
What was waiting for him was a giant web that he bounced on. "Whoa!" he said, regaining his balance. He looked at the seemingly infinite void underneath the web. "That is not safe at all."
He looked around and saw multiple trainers around him.
"Alright. Let's get to the gym leader."
He walked very carefully along the web, not wanting to lose his balance, and managed to avoid most of the trainers. However, the last one was right before the gym leader.
She giggled when she saw him. "Such weak prey! You've been caught up in my web!"
"Isn't it the gym leader's web?" he asked.
Her smile went away a bit, but she sent out her Pokémon anyway. It was a Kakuna.
"Alright!" Percy said, simply opening the Pokéball. He didn't want Froakie to fall.
Froakie jumped out and was surprised that the battlefield was literally a web strand, but looked ahead at Kakuna, who stayed still.
"Use water pulse!" Percy said, pointing at Kakuna. Froakie nodded and jumped at Kakuna, shooting water from his mouth. The enemy Kakuna barely even moved.
"Well, how about that?" Percy said.
"Kakuna! Use harden!" the opposing trainer cried out.
A gleaming light shone over Kakuna's body as its defense increased.
"Alright then, quick attack!" Percy said. Froakie bounced on the web and then left it at an angle towards the Kakuna, landing a critical hit.
"Now, poison sting!" the trainer said.
The Kakuna launched a purple spike at Froakie, who was thrown back at Percy, who caught him. "Whoa there, you alright?" Percy asked Froakie, who nodded. He let Froakie down, and said "Bubble!"
Froakie shot bubbles at the Kakuna. The bubbles floated towards it and exploded, knocking it back.
"Poison sting!" the enemy trainer said.
More purple spikes were shot at Froakie, who was thrown off of his balance. He grabbed onto the strand of webbing and pulled himself back up, jumping at the Kakuna.
"Water pulse!" Percy said, and Percy shot water at Kakuna, knocking it out.
The opposing trainer groaned and pulled out a Pokéball, where the Kakuna went into.
"You may have taken out Kakuna," the trainer started.
"I already have a girlfriend," Percy muttered jokingly.
"But can you stand up to Combee?!" she said, throwing a Pokéball out. A Combee flew from it, flying in the air.
Percy rolled his eyes. He couldn't waste Froakie's P.P. on this battle. He still had to go through the gym leader.
"Uh … water pulse, please?" Percy asked.
Froakie nodded and shot water at the Combee, knocking it out of the air. Combee fell to the web and got stuck in it.
"Combee!" the trainer cried out.
"Alright," Percy said, "water pulse."
Froakie obeyed and knocked it out with water.
The trainer groaned, pulling out her Pokéball and letting Combee back inside of it. She let him pass, and he walked up to the gym leader, Viola, who was waiting for him, healing Froakie as he walked on the web.
"Uh … hi," Percy said.
"I was watching that battle," she said. "You're not bad."
"Oh, thanks," he said.
She pulled out a camera insanely fast. "Now, get your Pokémon ready! There's a battle coming, and I want to get every shot!"
Percy stared at her. He didn't think it was humanly possible to pull a camera from a bag that fast. "Uh … alright."
He threw out the Pokéball and Froakie jumped out. "Froakie, let's go!"
"Fro!" Froakie said, looking at Viola.
She smiled and threw out a Surskit. "Surskit!" it said happily.
"Now, quick attack!" Viola said.
Froakie jumped out of the way, and Percy said "Water pulse!"
Froakie shot some water at Surskit, stopping it before it hit him. Surskit was blown back, and shook its head, dazed. It looked at Froakie, determination filling its eyes, and launched itself at Froakie again, hitting him this time. Froakie groaned in pain, but quickly shook it off as Percy said "Hit it with pound!"
Froakie jumped at Surskit, his arm raised and ready to hit it, but it zoomed out of the way and around Froakie. Froakie got dizzy trying to follow it, and Surskit used that to its advantage, hitting it multiple times with quick attack. Percy groaned as Froakie repeatedly took damage. Then he had an idea.
"Hey! Use your, uh, whatever you call them on your neck!"
Froakie understood and threw the white stuff from his neck around him, stopping Surskit in its tracks.
"Alright then, use water pulse!" Percy said.
Froakie shot water and Surskit, and Percy may or may not have increased the pressure and power of the blast, shooting Surskit into the wall opposite of him.
"Uh, you alright?" Percy asked Surskit, a little worried.
Surskit mumbled out what he assumed was a yes. Viola pulled out its Pokéball and summoned it back.
"Surskit will be fine. They're tough."
She pulled out her second Pokéball (also her last), and said "Go! Vivillon!"
A butterfly flew out of the Pokéball. It was a big butterfly, and it wasn't like any butterfly he'd ever seen before, but it was a butterfly nonetheless.
"That's a butterfly," Percy said.
"What's a butterfly?" Viola asked.
Percy nodded. He forgot these people wouldn't know what a butterfly was. "Nothing. Hey, Froakie, you mind hitting it with bubble?"
Froakie nodded and shot some bubbles at it, but Vivillon flew out of the way.
"Vivillon! Infestation!"
Percy found it a bit weird seeing someone say those words with everything they had. He probably should have expected it, but it was still weird.
Either way, something flew from the ground and hit Froakie.
"Ha! Now your Pokémon can't escape!" Viola said, clearly seeing that victory was in her grasp.
Percy rolled his eyes. "That doesn't really hurt me much, he's the only Pokémon I have."
Viola was confused. "What?"
"WATER PULSE!" Percy shouted out. Froakie hit Vivillon with water and knocked it out of the air. It flew to the ground and Percy said "White stuff! Go!"
Froakie threw some of the white stuff from his neck and caught Pavilion, who was now stuck to the ground.
"Vivillon!" Viola said worriedly.
"Water pulse! Again!" Percy said. Froakie hit Vivillon with water, and blew it away. It hit the wall, and fell to the ground, unconscious.
"What?!" Viola said, shocked, dropping her camera. She caught it, and looked at him.
"Well, whaddya know?" Percy said.
"You are certainly a skilled trainer," she said, walking towards him. "I don't see any problem with giving you … the Bug Badge!"
She pulled out a badge that looked like a bug.
"Wow, very good craftsmanship," Percy said.
The curtain behind her revealed a staircase, and she gestured to it. "There is the exit."
"Got it," Percy said, walking out.
