Chapter 4
Callie's POV
So far things were going well. Callie, Mark, and her father had met with a few hot shot golfers and had made quite the impression. Callie was not into golf at all, but she had to admit some of these golfers were easy on the eyes. She was even asked by one if she wanted to be their date to the welcome dinner. She politely declined telling him that the whole tournament doesn't run itself. Thankfully he took it well and she promised she would find him later that evening.
"Calliope, I can't get over how fantastic everything has turned out so far. You and Mark have really done a fabulous job. I am so proud of you." Carlos was loving having his hotel filled to capacity with golfers and press. This was what he envisioned when he started his company all those years ago.
"Thank you, Daddy, it has not been easy, but Mark has been such a huge help. I really think we can get a PGA tournament here every year." Callie said with pride.
Though she didn't want to go into the family business at first, when she had Sofia it was kind of a given. She was a single mother and needed the flexibility. Growing up Callie's parents were always working. She was raised by nannies and tutors. That is not the life she would allow for her daughter. So, when her father approached her about a managerial job at one of the hotels, she happily agreed. She was home for dinner every night and Sofia had the stability Callie craved growing up.
"Daddy, I meant to ask who is this Arizona Robbins that the other club would not allow to play?"
"Calliope she is the next big thing. I want to have dinner with her and her team sometime in the next few days. I was thinking we could become a sponsor for her. Get the Torres name and company info out there. I am telling you, she is going to consistently be in PGA tournaments. I have never seen such natural talent." Carlos was beaming with pride for someone Callie doesn't even think he had ever met.
Callie was proud of how pro woman her father was. He has always been that way. Growing up in the lifestyle they did, it was kind of implied that men worked, and women stayed home. That is not how Carlos Torres raised his girls. He wanted them to be the best and brightest. He was constantly donating to women's charities, funding women's STEM programs, and he even made it a point to provide extra funding to charities that targeted women of color. Callie was proud to be her father's daughter.
As they were talking, Mark walked up and had a huge smile on his face. "Carlos, there is a gentleman here that wants to talk to you about renting out the Presidential Suite for the next two weeks. He was told at the front desk that it was booked. I don't remember anyone booking that. I would have remembered at $15,000 a night." Mark looked giddy. It wasn't common to book out that suite. Two weeks at a time was basically unheard of.
"Mark, that suite is taken. I have put Arizona Robbins up in that suite for the duration of The Race." Carlos answered.
"Wait a second….you are putting a golfer up in the Presidential Suite….free of charge?" Mark asked with pure shock evident on his face.
Callie just chuckled. Yeah, she was surprised her father put a golfer up in that suite, but Mark's reaction was priceless. She wasn't going to lie, turning down $15k a night for two weeks stung a little. But she knew better than to question Carlos Torres.
"Yes Mark. Arizona Robbins is making history the next two weeks. I want her comfortable. What she is doing is monumental for women not only in golf, but all sports. Don't you think that deserves some celebration?" Carlos asked. He was not going to accept being questioned.
Mark sat there, mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. Finally, he responded. "Yes sir, you are absolutely right. I will ask this gentleman if he would be interested in a different suite. We have a few available." Mark said as he walked away.
Carlos just laughed. He knew that the $15k a night for the Presidential Suite would have been great for The Calliope's profits. But he wanted Arizona Robbins comfortable and more importantly he wanted her to feel welcome. This was going to be a rough few week for her. Carlos had always had to fight to be taken seriously and he was a man. He had heard the whispers about Arizona competing with the men. Her being here was the whole reason he was even hosting The Race. He wanted her in tip top shape.
Callie just looked at her father. "You are really serious about this golfer Daddy. Is there a reason that you are going out of your way for one competitor?"
"Calliope, I want her to feel welcome. You know as well as I do people don't think she should be here. Just like people don't think you should be in the board meetings. But we both know that you belong. You earned it. So, has she."
"Okay Daddy. I look forward to meeting her. I am going to have Mark invite her and her team to drinks with us before dinner. I would love for you to get to talk with her, especially about potential sponsorship."
"Fantastic idea Calliope! I have a few calls to make but I will see you for drinks and then dinner. Love you Mija." With a kiss to her cheek, he was off.
Callie just stood there and looked around at the packed hotel. She was feeling confident in everything she and Mark had worked on. These next few weeks were going to be great.
Callie noticed Mark slip into the banquet center where the press was meeting. She actually needed to ask him about inviting Arizona to drinks tonight. She headed in his direction. As she was walking, she saw him approach a blonde woman with his classic Mark Sloan smile. He started talking to her and handed her his business card. She seemed interested enough. Just then, Callie realized who the blonde was. That was the woman she had run into this morning. Of course, Mark was turning on his flirting. The woman was gorgeous. Leave it to Mark Sloan. Not even here a full day and already trying to pick women up.
As she was watching, Mark turned around and headed her way.
"Already picking up the ladies I see." She jokingly said.
"She was hot, wasn't she? I wasn't picking her up though. That was Arizona Robbins. I invited her to drinks before the welcome dinner. I want to see who is sucking my $15k commission. She actually thought we were married though." Mark said with a laugh.
Callie was a bit stunned. THAT was Arizona Robbins? Wow. She kind of understood the hype. Granted she hadn't seen her golf yet, but that face. That was a face that could sell merchandise.
"Wow. She is hot. I kind of see what the appeal is about. She is gorgeous." Callie said in a dreamy tone.
Mark looked at her "Torres, you know she is gay right? Also, she is a hell of a golfer. You know I love the sport and that woman deserves to be here." Mark said honestly impressed.
Callie couldn't move past his first sentence. Arizona was gay. That caused Callie to completely replay the interaction from earlier. The hand holding, the smiles. I bet her hands could be good at other things Callie thought to herself.
"Yo! Earth to Torres." Mark said waving his hand in front of her face. "Ohh I know that look. You were thinking of blondie naked, weren't you?" Mark joked.
"Shut it Mark." Callie gave him a smack over the head. "We are running this whole dang tournament. No sleeping with the golfers!" This was a mantra Callie was going to need to repeat to herself over the next few days.
Just then, Callie realized she was going to be having drinks with the blue-eyed blonde in a few hours. Shit. Shit. Shit. No sleeping with the golfers, no sleeping with the golfers.
"Sloan, I have to go. I am going to run upstairs and check on Sof. Then I need to make sure my outfit for tonight is all set." She said in a rush.
"Yeahhh I am sure you do Torres. Pre drinks with Blondie got ya nervous?" He said laughing.
"Goodbye Mark! Make sure things down here stay running smooth. I will see you at 6!" She said as she turned to leave.
Mark was absolutely correct. It had been a while since Callie had time to herself. Let alone time to herself to have drinks with other adults. Other hot blonde adults. She needed to get it together. She was running The Race for goodness sakes. She could not risk anything by getting close to a golfer. This was her company's time to shine.
