Hey guys, sorry about the delay posting this chapter, I've been a bit busy lately. I also wanted to tell you that maybe I will be even slower updating the story the next month or so, I have some things I need to do and I'm not really in a good place right now, so yeah.
Well, I hope you enjoy this chapter, I know it could be a bit boring but I needed to introduce the characters.
Thanks to eveyone who is reading the story, I can't say how happy it made me to know some of you are enjoying it! Tke care guys, see you next chapter!
"I can't believe my baby sister is coming to Beacon with me!" Said a blonde excitedly, hugging a suffocating Ruby. "This is the best day ever!"
Gasping for air, the young huntress stuttered, "Please stop Yang," while trying to escape from her sister's death grip, "Can't breathe!"
"But I'm so proud of you."
Embarrassed, Ruby replied, "Really sis, it was nothing! Besides I had help, the guy with the trident saved us at the end."
"What do you mean? It was incredible, not many people at beacon can say that they could have fought all those people. Everyone is going to think you are the bee's knees!"
"I don't want to be the bee's knees, okay? I don't want to be ant kind of knees! I just want to be a normal girl with normal knees."
"What's with you? Aren't you excited?"
"Of course I'm excited… I just…" Ruby sighed, covering her face with her hands. "I got moved ahead two years. I don't want people to think I'm special or anything."
Exasperated, Yang hugged her sister and pointing to the TV said, "But you are special. They are even talking about you in the news, look!"
"The robbery was lead by nefarious criminal Roman Torchwick, who was able to escape leaving all the stolen Dust behind after being chased off by two teenagers, who were later sent to the VPD to testify and give their account of the fight. Back to you Lisa."
"Thank you Cyril. In other news, this Saturday's Faunus Civil Rights protest turned dark when members of the White Fang disrupted the ceremony. The once peaceful organization has now disrupted…"
The news feed is cut off and replaced by a hologram featuring a person with a stern expression. "Hello and welcome to Beacon."
"Who is that?" Asked Yang.
"My name is Glynda Goodwitch."
"Oh."
"You are among a privileged few who have received the honour of being selected to attend this prestigious academy! Our world is experiencing an incredible time of peace, and as future Huntsmen and Huntresses, it is your duty to uphold it. You have demonstrated the courage needed for such a task, and now it's our turn to provide you with the knowledge and the training to protect our world."
With a flash, the hologram disappeared, letting the students see out of the windows, astonishing them with the view.
Excitedly, Ruby pointed outside, "Oh wow! Look, you can see Signal from up here! I guess home isn't too far after all!"
Smiling down at her sister, Yang replied, "Beacon's our home now."
Descending from the bullhead, Ruby looked around, amazed at the beauty of the surrounding sights. In front of her was a magnificent building that could only be the Academy, crowned by a clocktower, just in the centre of the structure. Wide-eyed, she let out a soft "Wow."
With a grin, Yang nudged her sister and said, "The view from Vale's got nothing on this!" When she received no reply, she turned around and saw the redhead with stars in her eyes, looking at the weapons from nearby students.
"Omygosh, sis! That kid's got a collapsible staff! And she's got a fire sword!" In a trance, she tried to approach them, but was yanked back by the hood. "Ow! Oww!"
"Easy there little sister, they're just weapons!"
Affronted, Ruby said, "'Just weapons'? They're an extension of ourselves! They are a part of us! Oh, they're so cool!"
With a smile that spoke of thousands of hours of practice, the blonde turned to her sister and asked, "Well, why can't you swoon over your own weapon? Aren't you happy with it?"
Unsheathing her scythe, Ruby indignantly answered, "Of course I'm happy with Crescent Rose! I just really like seeing new ones. It's like meeting new people, but better…"
Laughing, Yang grabbed the redhead's hood and tugged it down, hiding her face. "Ruby, come on, why don't you go try and make some friends of your own?"
With a downcast look, the scythe wielder pulled off her hood and asked, "But why would I need friends if I have you?"
"Well," as she was answering, a group of people surrounded Yang and dragged her away. "Actually, my friends are here, gotta go catch up. Kay, see ya, bye bye!"
"Wait, where are you going!? Are we supposed to go to our dorms? Where are our dorms? Do we have dorms?" Kicking the floor dejectedly, Ruby looked around, sighing sadly. "I don't know what I'm doing…"
Well, at least it could be worse, thought the redhead, walking towards the school. I could have- "Eep!" With a shout, she fell backwards into a pile of luggage, sending cases flying everywhere.
"What are you doing!?" With a start, Ruby sat up, looking around for the source of the shout, finding a girl with white hair glaring at her.
"Uh, sorry!"
"Sorry!? Do you have any idea of the damage you could have caused?"
Confused, the redhead picked up a case, making the contents clink around in it. "Uhh…"
Shrieking, the white-haired girl demanded, "Give me that!" Opening the case, she revealed the twinkling contents. "This is Dust! – Mined and purified from the Schnee quarry!"
"Uhhhh..."
"What are you, brain dead?" Taking a red vial from the case, she waved it around the confused girl's face, letting out the dust-like substance. "DUST! Fire, water, lighting, energy!"
Coughing from the dust pouring into her face, she replied, "I (cough) I know…"
"Are you even listening to me? Is any of this sinking in? What do you have to say for yourself!?"
"I…" Trying to hold back a sneeze, Ruby though about what she could say from the barrage of words thrown at her. Losing the battle, she let out a sneeze, causing all the Dust released in the air to explode, sending the vial towards the feet of a black-haired girl wearing a bow.
"Unbelievable! This is exactly the kind of thing I was talking about!"
Embarrassed, Ruby apologetically said, "I'm really, really sorry!"
Throwing her hands at the air, the bossy girl continued, "Ugh, you complete dolt! What are you even doing here? Aren't you a little young to be attending Beacon?"
"Well, I-I…"
"This isn't your ordinary combat school. Its not just sparring and practice, you know! We're here to fight monsters, so… Watch where you're going!"
Fed up, the scythe wielder stepped forward and said to the girl's face: "Hey! I said I was sorry princess!"
"Heiress, actually." Interrupted a voice coming from behind the girls. "Weiss Schnee, heiress to the Schnee Dust Company, one of the largest producers of energy propellant in the world."
Turning around, Ruby saw a girl with amber eyes wearing a bow, holding the vial of dust lost in the explosion.
Smugly, Weiss Schnee thrust her nose into the air. "Finally, some recognition!"
"The same company infamous for its labour forces and questionable business partners."
Chuckling, Ruby looked at the fuming heiress, who had a visible vein throbbing on her forehead. "Wha- How dare- The nerve of… ugh!" Irate, Weiss snatched the vial from the black-haired girl and walked off in a huff, leaving both girls behind.
Apologetic, Ruby shouted to the retreating girl, "I promise I'll make it up to you! (sigh) I guess I'm not the only one having a rough first day. So, what's…" Turning to the other girl, she saw only her back as she was also walking towards the school. Collapsing to the ground, she said, "Welcome to Beacon…"
Patting the back of a puking guy was not how Percy imagined his first day of combat school was going to go. He wasn't going to say anything though, the poor sod was a good guy so making him feel bad wasn't his intention. "Feeling better, buddy?"
Flashing him a thumbs up, Jaune wiped his mouth, looking at him gratefully. "Yeah man, thanks. Gods, not even my first day and I'm embarrassing myself."
"Don't feel too bad man, it can happen to anyone, I hate flying too you know." Chuckling, he spoke as if he were telling a secret, "It's been three months since I could board a plane not felling like I could die at any moment."
The blonde boy looked at him weirdly for a second, before shaking his head and said, "Thanks Percy it makes me feel better."
"No problem, now come on, the ceremony will start at any moment." Walking towards the school, Percy noticed someone laid on the floor who for some reason looked familiar. Approaching he noticed why.
Offering a hand to the girl, he exclaimed, "Hey, badass scythe girl! It looks like it takes school to do something a criminal couldn't!"
Noticing him, the redhead's eyes widened. "Hey, its you! You are coming to Beacon too!?"
Laughing, Percy spread his hands and said, "Well, it looks like it." Blushing, Ruby looked to the floor. "Hey now, I was just kidding! What's your name red? Can't keep calling you that now can I?"
Beaming, the scythe wielder offered her hand and introduced herself: "My name's Ruby, Ruby Rose!"
"It suits you! The name's Perseus Jackson, but call me Percy, Perseus makes me feel like I'm being scolded." Gesturing behind himself, he said "And this guy is Jaune Arc, we met at the bullhead."
Innocently, Ruby asked, "Aren't you that guy who threw up on the ship?"
Percy then started to laugh at a blushing Jaune. "Looks like you got a reputation dude."
"All I'm saying is that motion sickness is a much serious problem that people let on." Jaune was currently in the process of explaining that vomiting on the ship wasn't actually that bad.
Laughing, Ruby told him, "Look, I'm sorry! Vomit Boy was the first thing that came to mind."
Ignoring Percy, who was laughing in the background, Jaune shot back, "Oh yeah? What if I called you crater face?"
Indignant, Ruby said, "Hey, that explosion was an accident!"
"Sorry Jaune, I'm going to have to take Ruby's side on this." At the affronted face Jaune was making, he explained, "Look man, we have a bond, you don't fight criminals with someone and leave it at that."
Face brightening, Jaune then excitedly asked, "Ohh, so you were the ones they were talking about in the news then?"
Blushing, Ruby replied, "W-well, yeah, but it was nothing, really!"
Throwing an arm around the blushing girl shoulders, making her red face even redder, Percy exclaimed, "Nothing? What are you talking about? You were badass, sending criminals flying everywhere! You were like FYAA, FWOOSH, FWOOA! And that scythe, I only know one person who could handle one like that."
"Ohh, so you know uncle Qrow?"
Bursting up laughing, Percy said, "Uncle Qrow? That guy's an uncle? Pfttt."
"Hey! He is not bad!" Looking at the face Percy was making, she looked away, mumbling under her breath, "Well, not that bad."
Uncomfortable with the silence that followed, Ruby pulled out her scythe, stabbing it into the ground. "So… I got this thing!"
Looking at it with wide eyes, Jaune said, "Whoa! It's that a scythe?!"
With pride evident in her face, the redhead nodded. "It's also a customizable high-impact sniper rifle!"
Whistling, Percy looked at it, impressed. Even though he had bad memories with scythes, he knew how hard was to wave one around, and that one looked quite heavy too. "Damn red, that's impressive."
Poor Jaune, though, was still a bit confused. "A-wha…?"
Cocking it, the redhead replied, "It's also a gun."
"Ohh."
Looking at Percy, she said, "Where is yours? The trident was awesome!"
Smiling, Percy pulled out his pen. It was always funny to see the confused faces on people when he did that. Uncapping it, Riptide sprung out in all its bronze glory, leaving the other two gaping.
Astonished, Ruby looked at the sword and exclaimed: "What!? How is that even possible!? Where does all the material go!?"
Shrugging, Percy replied, "Who knows, it's a family heirloom, I don't have much idea on how it was done." Then with a click he turned it into a trident, making stars appear in Ruby's eyes.
"Ohh its awesome! So beautiful!" Turning to Percy and looking at him with puppy-dog eyes, she pleaded, "Can I hold it? Please please please please?"
Damnit, those are too effective! Caving in, the demigod tossed Ruby the trident, who caught it with a expression that spoke of pure bliss.
Tossing the trident back to Percy, the redhead exclaimed, "It's amazing! All the mechanisms are so smooth! I can't even see where the weapon even starts to change! What kind of bullets does it use? Why a trident? Isn't it hard to use? What kind of material is it made of? What is the cadence rate of the rifle?"
Overwhelmed with the barrage of questions, the demigod could only let out a laugh. "Calm down Ruby, I didn't get half the questions you asked!"
Giving him an embarrassed smile, she replied, "Sorry, sorry! Its just I love weapons so much, they are amazing! And yours is awesome, I don't even know where to start with it!" Turning to Jaune, who had been watching the exchange amused, she asked, "So what've you got?"
"Oh! I, uh…" Unsheathing the blade in his hip, he said, "I got this sword!"
"Oooohhh"
Grabbing the scabbard, he pressed a button, turning it into a shield. "Yeah, and I've got a shield too!"
"So, what do they do?"
Startled, the blonde fumbled with his shield, trying to grasp it correctly. "The shield gets smaller, so when I get tired of carrying it, I can just… put it away…"
Perplexed, Ruby asked, "But wouldn't it weigh the same?"
Dejectedly, Jaune answered, "Yeah, it does…"
Seeing how uncomfortable he was, Percy took pity on him. "Well, having three weapons in one seems a bit excessive to me too, but they gave it to me so I can't complain."
"Yeah!" Ruby continued. "I'm kind of a dork when it comes to weapons…" Ignoring the pointes looks she was receiving, she kept going. "I guess I did go a little overboard when designing it."
Damn, maybe she is a child of Hephaestus, that's some impressive work. Jaune, ignorant to his thoughts, voiced them: "Wait- You made that!?"
Blushing at the look she was getting, Ruby replied, "Of course! All students at Signal forge their own weapons! Didn't you make yours?"
"It's a hand me down, like Percy's. My great grandfather used it to fight in the war."
"Sounds like a family heirloom to me! Well, I like it! Not many people have an appreciation for the classics these days."
"Yeah man, you said your great grandfather used it and it still is in peak condition, that's one hell of a weapon."
"Yeah, the classics…"
"Soo, why'd you help me back there in the courtyard?" asked Ruby to the boys.
Winking at the redhead, Percy replied, "I said it before, beating up thugs with someone creates a bond Ruby, and you don't leave your vigilante buddies in the floor."
Enthusiastically, Jaune nodded. "Yeah, 'sides my mom always says, 'Strangers are just friends you just haven't met yet!'" Looking around, he asked, "Hey, where are we going?"
Pointing to a set of gigantic doors that had students going in, Percy said, "To the auditory, we will get there in a sec, its just in front of us."
Entering, they heard a voice calling out. "Ruby! Over here! I saved you a spot!"
Turning to the boys, she said, "Oh! Hey, I-I gotta go! I'll see you after the ceremony!"
Turning to Percy, only to see that he was going after Ruby, Jaune muttered, "Great, where am I supposed to find another nice, quirky girl to talk to?"
Catching up to Ruby, Percy told her, "Hey, you don't mind if I come with, right?"
Stuttering, Ruby replied hastily, "N-no, no, I can introduce you to my sister too!" Signalling to a blonde in front of the, she said, "That's her."
Looking to where the redhead was pointing, Percy saw a gorgeous blonde with purple eyes waving to them, and when her eyes fell onto him she gave the demigod a once over, and apparently liking what she saw threw him a wink.
Grinning at them, the blonde hugged her Ruby saying, "How's your first day going little sister?" Signalling at Percy, she said, "Not too bad I see, if you got hot stuff here hanging out with you."
Hearing Percy chuckling, the redhead reddened, and stuttered: "Y-Yang! It's not like that! He is the guy who helped me yesterday, that's all!"
Her eyes widening, she turned to Percy and looked at him in a new light. "Ohh is that right? Well then, thanks for helping out my little sister! My name's Yang Xiao Long."
Waving the thanks away, Percy replied, "Nah it was nothing, Ruby did all the work, I just came after the thugs were all tired. The name's Perseus Jackson, but call me Percy!"
"If you say so…"
Huffing, Ruby turned to her sister. "You ditched me! And I exploded!"
"Yikes, meltdown already?!"
"No! I literally exploded a hole in in front of the school! And there was some fire, and I think some ice…"
Grinning broadly, Yang teased Ruby. "Are you being sarcastic?"
Pouting, the redhead replied, "I wish! I tripped over some crabby girl's luggage, and then she yelled at me, and then I sneezed, and then I exploded, and then she yelled at me again, and I felt really, really bad, and I just wanted her to stop yelling at me!"
Watching the exchange, Percy was struggling to contain his laughter, and finally doubled over when the heiress appeared and shouted, signalling to Ruby: "YOU."
Startled, Ruby jumped at Yang's arms. "Oh god! Its happening again!"
"You were lucky we weren't blown off the side of a cliff!"
Deadpanning, Yang faced her sister. "Oh my gods! You really exploded!"
Indignant, Ruby stomped her foot. "It was an accident." Getting off her sister's arms, she came to face a hand full of pamphlets in front of her. "What is this?"
"The Schnee Dust Company is not responsible for any injuries or damages sustained while operating a Schnee Dust Company product. Although not mandatory, the Schnee Family highly encourages their customers to read and familiarize themselves with this easy-to-follow guide to Dust applications and practices in the field."
Reeling, Ruby could only let out a very verbose "uhhh?"
"Well, you wanna start making things up to me?"
"Absolutely?"
Handing the pamphlet, Weiss then said, "Read this, and don't ever speak to me again!"
Percy then decided to intervene, seeing as Ruby was feeling out of her depth. "Look, princess ("Princess!?) you just stumbled on her on a bad time, just cool it a bit, don't be such a Weiss Queen."
Yang busted up laughing, saying: "You and I are going to be best friends Hot Stuff, I can see it!"
Winking at her, Percy answered, "Looking forward to it." Turning back to the conversation between the fighting girls, he caught a very much not enthusiastic "NO" coming from the heiress. Hearing someone clearing his throat, he turned to the stage, where Ozpin was readying the microphone.
"I'll... keep this brief. You have travelled here today in search of knowledge, to hone your craft and acquire new skills, and when you have finished, you plan to dedicate your life to the protection of the people. But I look amongst you, and all I see is wasted energy, in need of purpose, direction. (as the students whisper among themselves) You assume knowledge will free you of this, but your time at this school will prove that knowledge can only carry you so far. It is up to you to take the first step."
Then Glynda Goodwitch 'Glynda Goodwitch', snickered Percy, took the microphone and said, "You will gather in the ballroom tonight; tomorrow, your initiation begins. Be ready. You are dismissed."
Yang then turned to Percy, and said, "He looked kind of… off."
Laughing, Percy replied, "Yeah, that's Oz for you, he is a bit weird."
Jaune then approached the group, and turning to Weiss said, "I'm a natural blonde you know!"
