Unfortunately, Goofy didn't get much sleep last night. Although he's been sleeping on the couch the past couple of nights, this didn't contribute to this bout of sleeplessness. (In fact, he finds the couch marginally more comfortable than sleeping in his bed thanks to his cast.) He was worried about his son.
It all started when Max returned yesterday evening with that same haunted look that he had from the hospital. Despite his best efforts to get him to talk about his day, Goofy could only watch him as he robotically set out his food, put his own away, and then go upstairs.
Hoping that his son would open up about what happened, Goofy hurried to the kitchen and saw that he was sitting at the table looking at the newspaper as well as an apartment guide. While he had set out a full breakfast for him, Max had just opted for a cup of coffee.
"Mornin', Maxie." Goofy greeted.
Max didn't look up from the newspaper. "Hey, dad."
Goofy gave his son a sympathetic smile. "Just keep at it, Maxie." He said. "Something will come along." Goofy scruffled his hair and proceeded to take his seat at the table.
Of course, Max had a lot more on his mind outside of trying to find a place to live; however, he was reluctant to discuss the matter with his dad if only to avoid frustration (and maybe an argument). Then again, the only thing more frustrating than talking about an issue directly would be having it s l o w l y dragged out of him.
Might as well get it over with.
"Hey, uh, dad?" Max started. Goofy looked up. "What if I already found a place, but someone's already put a deposit on it?"
Goofy raised a confused eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, shouldn't I get in a bidding war with the other buyer? This is a great place we're talking about!"
"Max, there are other apartments out there." Goofy said. "Probably also in that same building."
"But I don't want those other places!" Max shouted. "I've looked at everything that was available, and I've determined that this is the apartment for me! And I just can't sit back and let it be taken by someone else!"
Max paused. "I'm so stupid!" He said. "Why did I have to wait? I knew all along that she was the one for me, but...I messed up." He placed his head in his hands.
Goofy's eyes widened and he scooted closer to him. "Somehow, I don't think we're talkin' about apartments anymore." He said as he placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Dad, I saw Roxanne yesterday." Max confessed as he lowered his hands to the table but kept his head low. "And she was with her fiancé. And…they're getting married Saturday."
"Aww, Maxie…" Goofy whispered. After a beat of silence, he added, "And I s'ppose you were lookin' to reconnect with her." He said.
"I mean, I didn't want to," Max looked up, but avoided his father's gaze, "not at first, but then...it would've been nice if...I thought about...you know."
"I know losin' your first love is hard, son." Goofy said. "And I understand that you still have feelins for her, but love isn't about possession. It's about puttin' the needs and feelins of the other person ahead of your own."
Max gave him a confused look. "What do you mean?"
"Buy her a present and tell her 'congratulations', son."
Another day of home and apartment tours had ended for Max and he was headed home. To say he was irritated would be an understatement. How did today's search go even worse than yesterday's?! At this rate, he really would be better off living at home than living next to weird neighbors or in a house that's one bad storm away from toppling over.
As he drove through his neighborhood, he soon found himself on a familiar street. Seconds later, he stopped in front of a familiar house.
Roxanne's.
'I know losin' your first love is hard, son.' His father's words from earlier echoed in his mind. 'Buy her a present and tell her 'congratulations'.'
Yeah, right.
He got out of his car and marched towards the front door. He had already wasted so much time when it came to his relationship with Roxanne and he's not about to just let her go off and marry someone else. After all, there was a reason why he came back into town when he did.
All he needed was just one more chance. If he and Roxanne don't work out, fine. She can go and marry Collin Saturday or whatever.
But he's not about to throw away the possibility if they do work out.
Before he could even knock, the door flew open and he shrunk under a familiar glare.
Roxanne's dad was still as intimidating as ever, but this time with more gray hair.
"H-hey, Mr. Martin." Max greeted, giving him a wide nervous smile. "Long time, no see."
The door slammed in his face.
And just as quickly, realization crashed down onto Max. Maybe, just maybe, Roxanne's old boyfriend making a sudden reappearance days before she's set to be married isn't a good look. Not wanting to stick around any longer and face Mr. Martin, who might be preparing an attack, Max decided to make a hasty retreat.
"Daddy!"
His ears perked up and just as he turned around, he saw the door open and Roxanne stepped outside.
"Max, what are you doing here?" She asked as she folded her arms.
Before he answered, he heard a car horn. He looked over his shoulder and saw Collin waving. He rolled his eyes.
"I just came by to ask you out to lunch." He said confidently.
Roxanne gave him a skeptical look. "Really?"
"Of course! There's no harm in two 'old friends' just catching up, right?" He gave her a sarcastic look and her scowl deepened.
"Okay. Fine." She said. "I'm off tomorrow."
"Good. How about that cafe by Hamburger Hippo?"
"That's fine."
"Great. See you tomorrow at 12."
"Bye, Max." She walked past him towards Collin's car.
As he looked after her, a smug smile appeared on his face. Everything was going according to plan.
However, his confidence was cut once again once he heard Mr. Martin's infamous growling, which caused him to finally make a hasty exit from the porch to his car.
Still, everything was going according to plan.
