A Challenge
Catching the flu in February sucked, in JJ's opinion. She was now stuck at home with only her television for comfort. Hotch had told her not to come back until she was entirely well. She knew he was right, but thinking about all the files on her desk was depressing.
However, after three days at home, her temperature was nearly average. She'd almost stopped coughing, and the body aches had diminished. JJ decided that she'd go back to work in another two days because the boredom of reading and watching television was finally beginning to get on her nerves.
When she awoke the following day, she felt nearly back to her old self and had more energy than she'd experienced in a week. Her appetite was back, and she thought about trying some oatmeal for breakfast.
In the bathroom, she looked in the mirror and sighed. Her hair was a rat's nest that would take forever to fix. Her nose was still red from constant wiping, and she had tired–red eyes that made her look like she'd spent a couple of days on a serious bender.
As she stuck out her tongue and surveyed her teeth, her mind went back to the letter she'd received from Spence. He'd said he thought she was pretty, and he liked her hair. His method of complimenting her reminded her of a boy in high school that once asked her out.
What would Spence think if he could see her now? She shuddered at the thought then decided it was time to shower and get dressed.
"Thank God he can't see me," JJ said to herself as she began to brush out her hair carefully.
JJ admitted that she had noticed his crush on her, but he was so shy until he'd asked her out. She'd thought many times about making the first move but had thought better of it. Still, it was flattering to know he thought she was attractive.
JJ sighed and said to her reflection. "There's nothing wrong with your ego."
As she entered the shower for the first time in four days, JJ began to wonder why she didn't make the second move. Spence liked her. It was obvious. Garcia teased her about it constantly, and she endured a few choice comments from Morgan. Elle had once said to her, "Girl, Reid likes you, go for it." She'd even noticed that Gideon watched them sometimes, and it had been his idea for Reid to ask her out. The only team member who seemed utterly disinterested was Hotch, but that didn't surprise JJ.
While she dried her hair, JJ decided that she'd write one more note to Reid, but it would be a short one and to the point this time.
Fifteen minutes later, JJ lay on her sofa with a cup of tea, her stationery, and a blanket pulled over new pajama pants and a white tee-shirt.
Spence,
You have my phone number. Call me. We need to talk.
JJ.
She grinned and thought it was short and to the point. JJ wondered what Spence would think of this development. The ball was in his court, as they say, and she couldn't wait to see what developed.
