A/N: Apologies for the late upload! I had this chapter all edited and ready to go, but then I got distracted yesterday. Anyway, I hope you enjoy! This chapter is almost twice as long as the one before!
Toby breathed heavily as he struggled up the hill, his bow and arrows slung over his back. The sounds of the battle, men crying out in pain, metal slicing through flesh, arrows thunking into their targets were all around him. He didn't know what he was thinking coming with the army Sarah and Jareth had raised! Sarah had tried to warn him. She'd tried to tell him that there were things in battle that you could never unsee. He should have listened to her. He should have stayed at Rhihart's palace.
An Unseelie fae bellowed nearby as he charged two elves and a dwarf, his sword held high. "I need to find Palath," Toby mumbled. "He'll know what to do." He reached the top of the hill, a stitch in his side making his ribs hurt, and looked across the battlefield for the palomino centaur. There were so many creatures fighting and raising up clouds of dust though that it was hard to see very clearly. That and Palath wasn't the only palomino centaur in the herd. A small whimper escaped him as he struggled to find his friend. He wasn't even really sure where he was though. Thanks to the clouds of dust, he could no longer see the walls of the labyrinth. All he knew was that carnage surrounded him, and he wished he was someplace else.
Suddenly an arrow thunked into the ground inches from his feet. "AAAHH!" he shouted and stumbled back. An Unseelie fae was running towards him, his bow in one hand and another arrow in his other. Toby twisted on the spot and ran! He needed to find someplace safe! Maybe he could wait out the battle there? But first he needed to lose this guy!
He ran down the hill at breakneck speed, dodging allies and enemies alike. He thought he might've lost the Unseelie chasing him by this point, so he glanced back over his shoulder as he continued to run. His eyes widened upon seeing that not only had he not lost the Unseelie, he was gaining ground on Toby! "AAAHHH!" Toby yelled as his foot caught a rock and he went flying!
The Unseelie was upon him in moments, a dirk in his hands aimed at Toby's chest! "NO!" Toby rolled to the side and the Unseelie hit the ground beside him. He tried to gain his feet again, but the Unseelie grabbed his ankle and pulled him back down, the dirk coming up to make another attempt at stabbing him! Toby held up his arms protectively and screamed, "NOO!"
The Unseelie shouted in surprise as a blue forcefield shot out from Toby's crossed arms and knocked him to the side, his dirk falling out of his hand as he landed. Toby looked up in surprise. Had he just done magic? Jareth had mentioned it might be possible given the exposure he'd had as a child, but this was the first they'd seen any proof of it.
He only had a moment to marvel at the magic he'd done before he was scrambling for the dirk that had fallen between him and the Unseelie. Toby got his hands on it first, but the Unseelie was right there and pushed him onto his back. He grabbed the dirk, still in Toby's grasp, and twisted it so that it was pointed back at the teen. "Fuck!" Toby cursed as he struggled to keep the long knife from piercing his body. However the Unseelie was stronger and the dirk slowly inched down until it was pressed against his shoulder. It cut through the heavy leather jerkin he wore for armor and sunk into the soft flesh underneath. "AAAAHHH!" Toby screamed as the dirk cut through tissue and muscle.
The Unseelie used his body weight to press the dirk all the way down. Then with a wry smile, his face close to Toby's, he whispered, "I'm coming for you." Toby's eyes widened at the message, but he didn't have long to ponder it as the Unseelie rose and ripped the dirk out of his shoulder. Toby screamed again as blood poured out of the wound and soaked his clothes. Tears streamed down his face and he felt like he was going to throw up.
"TOBY!"
"TOBY, WAKE UP!"
Toby jerked and his eyes opened to see Sarah, Jareth, and Palath standing over him. However he didn't stare at them for long before he jerked up out of bed and ran for the bathroom! He barely made it to the toilet before heaving. There wasn't much in his stomach given that it was early morning and he hadn't eaten for nearly eight hours, but his stomach was insistent on completely emptying itself.
Once he had finished, he sat on his knees on the cool tile floor, leaning on the toilet and breathing heavily. Everything had seemed so real. In fact, there was a lingering ache in his shoulder from where the Unseelie had stabbed him. He'd had dreams of the battle before and had talked to Palath about it a bit, but nothing like this before. This nightmare was of something that hadn't even remotely happened. He'd never lost track of Palath in the battle. He'd never wandered around trying to find a hiding spot. And he most certainly hadn't been stabbed by an Unseelie!
"Toby?" Sarah called out from the doorway. "You okay?"
Toby leaned back away from the toilet, but stayed kneeling with one hand balancing himself against the bathtub. "Yeah… I… I don't know," he muttered.
"That must've been some nightmare," she said quietly as she entered the bathroom and gently ran a hand through his hair, feeling for a temperature as she did so. "Think you can make it back to bed?"
He nodded and stood unsteadily and stumbled to the sink to rinse his mouth. Sarah wrapped an arm around his shoulders and helped him back to his bedroom. Palath and Jareth were in the hall. Once he was tucked back in, Sarah sat on the edge of his bed. "Do you want to talk about it?"
Toby hesitated. While he'd talked to Palath openly about his dreams of the battle, he hadn't said anything to his sister, and he suspected she'd be disappointed that he hadn't confided in her before now. However there was something different about this dream. While the others had been scary and reliving moments of gruesome battle, this one was of someone killing him. "I…" he started. "It was about the Battle of the Labyrinth."
As predicted, Sarah's eyes widened and she looked concerned. "Have you been having a lot of these dreams?"
"No, not a lot, just every now and then. Palath and I talked about it during our trip to Allendria, and I sorted some things out."
Sarah's frown didn't go away, but she didn't pursue the topic any more. "So what about this one?"
"Um, I think Jareth and Palath should hear about it too. It was… disturbing."
"I'll go get them," she nodded.
"Can you bring me a glass of water too?"
"Sure."
A minute later, she reentered with the Goblin King, the centaur, and a glass of water. She handed it to Toby who was now sitting up in his bed before resuming her spot at the foot of the bed. Toby took a drink and then a deep breath before beginning. "I had a nightmare just now, and it was a bit different than normal."
"Was it of the battle again?" Palath asked.
"Yes, but things weren't the same as the dreams I've had in the past. In this one, I'd lost Palath and was stuck in the middle of the battle with no support. Then I was attacked by this Unseelie fae. I ran, but he eventually caught up to me when I tripped. We fought for a bit as he tried to stab me, but I… somehow I did magic and a forcefield pushed him back."
"You did magic in your dream?" Jareth asked with interest. "What did you do exactly?"
"Well, we were struggling and he came at me with this big knife. I crossed my arms to protect my face and then this blue forcefield shot out from me knocking him back."
Jareth smiled. "This is promising news, Toby. It may indicate that you could perform magic in the waking world too. What you did in your nightmare was exactly how you would perform a forcefield spell in real life."
"Seriously?"
"Yes. We'll have to explore that later though. Please continue with your dream," he gestured for him to proceed.
Toby thought about being able to do magic in real life for a second and it made him feel better. "Right, well the forcefield didn't knock him very far away and he was back to trying to stab me. I tried to push him off, but he was stronger and the knife slid right through my shoulder." He touched the spot where the knife had gone through in the dream, wincing a little as he did so.
"Is it sore?" Sarah asked.
"A little, but I don't know why. I wasn't injured there at all during the real battle."
"Nightmares, especially ones triggered by PTSD, can have weird side effects. Your brain may think it was injured and is sending pain signals to you."
"Eff that," he mumbled before taking another drink of water. "Anyway, aside from being stabbed, which never really happened, this Unseelie said the weirdest thing after stabbing me. He said I'm coming for you."
At this, Jareth's spine straightened and his eyes widened. "Are you sure that's what he said, Toby?"
"Yeah, weird, huh?"
"It may be a little bit more than weird," Jareth moved towards Toby's windows and started to run his hands along them.
"Jareth?" Sarah stood, her face furrowed with confusion and worry.
"It may be possible that someone is entering his dreams to threaten him," he said continuing to examine the windows.
"Like what they did to mom and dad?" Toby asked quietly.
"Very similar to, yes," Jareth paused when he reached the last window panel. "Here, there's a trace of dream magic, and it's recent."
"As in just now?"
"It certainly seems that way."
"What can we do to secure the grounds from those who mean the residents harm?" Palath asked. He looked like he wanted to take action, his muscles tense and his weight shifting back and forth between his hooves.
"I can do a perimeter spell that would alert us to intruders," Jareth said, turning to face them and crossing his arms over his chest as he thought, one hand coming up to rest under his chin. "And I could also put an anti-magic seal around Toby's windows. However that spell can be overcome depending on the spell caster's abilities."
He turned to look at them and his hands came to rest on is hips. "Aside from that, we cannot do much more without knowing what we're up against."
"That should be enough to get us started," Sarah declared.
"The lad could switch sleeping arrangements as well," Palath suggested. "Perhaps somewhere else in the house? Or I believe Lady Sarah has an alternative living space we could occupy?"
"Palath is right, we could just go back to my apartment," Sarah agreed. "I don't know why I didn't think of that sooner."
"It is a good idea, Cariad, but I want to see if we can catch our mystery dream spell caster," Jareth countered. "However that doesn't mean you and Toby have to stay here. If you would like, you can go back to your apartment and Palath and I can… how do you say it up here… hold a stakeout?"
Sarah smiled. "That actually sounds like a good plan, as long as Palath is up for it?"
The centaur nodded. "I would be honored to hold a stakeout with his Majesty."
"Good, it's settled then," Jareth rubbed his hands together. "However we have other things to do this morning. We still need to contact Rhihart about the Scryist."
"Why don't we do that, then Toby and I will pack up and move some things over to my apartment," Sarah suggested.
Everyone started to head downstairs including Toby who told Sarah that he was too creeped out by someone sending him dreams to stay in his room alone right now. An hour later, King Rhihart was reflecting through the full length mirror they were using to communicate. "Have you found a Scryist, brother?" Jareth asked.
"I have," Rhihart hesitated. "You're not going to like it though."
"I hardly think I can protest given the seriousness of the accusations being laid against us," Jareth replied.
Rhihart shrugged a little then gestured for someone out of the frame to step forward. A young elf stepped into view. She looked to be a little younger than Sarah and had dark warm brown hair, half pulled back and half flowing down to her waist, framing a heart shaped warm tawny beige face with wide vibrant violet eyes. She wore the traditional loose flowing dress that most elves of higher status wore in a cool azure shade. Neither Toby nor Sarah recognized her, but apparently both Jareth and Palath did. "Good morning, your Majesty," she said as she bowed her head.
Jareth's surprised look quickly shifted to neutral as he returned the short head bow and replied with, "And to you, your Highness." Palath gave the young woman a deeper bow.
Sarah and Toby looked back and forth between them. "Mind introducing us?" Sarah asked.
"Of course," Jareth startled slightly at Sarah's voice, but proceeded to introduce them. "Your Highness, this is Sarah Williams, Lady of the Labyrinth and my intended. And this is Tobias Williams, her younger brother and an honorary member of the centaur herd. And this is Palath, a Second Lieutenant in His Majesty King Rhihart's military."
"Sarah, Toby, Palath, may I introduce Her Royal Highness, Princess Inara Daniau, daughter of Queen Ioelena and Prince Ronsyth."
Sarah's eyes widened suddenly in understanding and gave a short bow to the young woman who was most definitely not as young as she looked. Toby copied her quickly. "It's nice to meet you, your Highness," she said.
Princess Inara nodded as they rose and turned to face Jareth again. "I understand you need a Scryist, King Jareth?"
"We do. Am I to understand that you posses this unique talent?"
"I do. I can see you are skeptical of my abilities though. Shall I demonstrate?"
"I don't mean to offend, your Highness, but I had not heard anything about your having this ability."
"My mother chose to keep it a close secret to prevent those who would use it for their own benefit from learning of it. You know how elves are, your Majesty."
Jareth nodded. "Of course. I understand. However I must ask why you have agreed to share this knowledge with us now?"
"When my mother learned of the allegations laid against you, she decided to assist you by means of my talent. She asks that you recognize my services in clearing your name as a formal apology for what my father did to Lady Sarah." She nodded towards Sarah.
Jareth's expression darkened for a moment, but when he replied, he sounded normal. "We shall see what assistance you can provide before I decide whether to forgive Prince Ronsyth for his transgressions."
Princess Inara nodded. "My mother suspected as much. I will endeavour to provide assistance to your satisfaction then. May I come through to assist you?"
Jareth thought for a minute before nodding. "Yes, we'll have the transportation spell ready in ten minutes."
"I will be ready."
Jareth gave his brother an indecipherable look before closing the connection. "What was that all about?" Sarah asked as soon as the connection was closed.
Jareth sighed. "Exactly what you heard," he replied as he turned to head out the back door and into the yard. "I honestly cannot say that I'm surprised Queen Ioelena kept her daughter's gifts a secret. However Rhihart was right when he said I wouldn't like this."
"Is it so bad to accept her help?"
"No, but if they actually expect me to completely forgive Ronsyth in exchange for using his daughter's talents then they have another thing coming. I fully intend to confront that bastard once this is all over." He stopped once he reached the back porch. "Would you mind creating the spell circle again, my dear?" he asked.
Sarah nodded, but didn't move right away. "How did I not know that Queen Ioelena had a daughter? I spent almost a week in the woman's company!"
"Princess Inara does not live with her mother or father. She lives with her aunt and uncle in Avalon where she is privately tutored in both diplomatic affairs as well as how to use her gift, I'm guessing."
Sarah accepted this and after a moment and moved out to the grass to create the spell circle. A couple of minutes later, the circle was complete and Jareth had made the transportation spell so that Princess Inara could pass through to the Aboveground. "Welcome, your Highness," he greeted her.
She nodded and looked around herself, taking in the backyard and house. "How quaint," she commented quietly before settling her gaze on the group gathered before her.
Sarah saw Toby stiffen at her quaint comment, and nudged him. "What may we call you during your visit with us?" Jareth asked.
"I suppose Princess Inara upon initial meeting, then your Highness will do."
"Ah, you see that is why I asked, your Highness. We would prefer the humans not to know of us or our abilities, so a pseudonym or a shortened version would work better while you stay here," Jareth replied.
"And just how long do you imagine I will be staying, King Jareth?" she gave him a stern look.
"As long as it takes to figure out a solution to our problem," Jareth retorted, a firm note in his voice. "I imagine your mother would agree."
Princess Inara's eyes narrowed and her lips thinned as she stared at him, but when she next spoke, her voice was neutral. "I imagine so. In that case, you may address me as Inara."
"Very well, Inara. If you'll follow me, we'll set straight to work." He led the way inside, Palath following immediately behind.
Sarah and Toby brought up the rear, but hung back enough to whisper quietly to each other. "Who does she think she is?" Toby grumbled. "Quaint…"
"She's a royal princess, Tobes. She's probably used to grand palaces and being waited on hand and foot."
"Well she better not expect that here! I ain't gonna be waiting on her, that's for sure!"
Sarah gave him an amused smile as they entered the kitchen. Jareth had already led Inara upstairs to the bedrooms where she would use her gift to determine what had happened. "Just be polite, Toby. I imagine you'll want to go back to the Underground once this is all said and done and it wouldn't be very smart to make an enemy of a royal princess. Especially one whose parents I'm supposed to be allies with."
Toby rolled his eyes, but then nodded. "Fine, but I reserve the right to walk out of the room if she gets on my nerves."
"Deal," Sarah agreed. All things considered, that was probably the best she could ask of him. "Shall we go upstairs and see what she's discovering?" Toby glanced towards the stairs and seemed to consider if he really wanted to go up, but curiosity won and he nodded, leading the way up the stairs.
They found Jareth, Palath, and Inara in Toby's bedroom. She was standing near the windows with her hands pressed against the frame and her eyes closed. She was breathing heavily as though she'd just finished running a race and sweat dripped down her face. Sarah's eyes widened in concern. She and Toby had not been downstairs that long, but it appeared that this gift of hers exhausted her quickly.
She moved closer, but Jareth stopped her with a hand to her arm. "Don't interrupt. It could break her link and damage both the trace and her mind."
Sarah took a step back, but was ready to help if needed.
The princess made small sounds of distress as she continued her link to the past, and she gripped the wooden frames hard until her fingers were white. She jerked suddenly and flew backwards from the window. Palath rushed forward and caught her under the arms. Her eyes were wide and her mouth was hanging open as she sucked in air. Sarah moved forward quickly and pressed two fingers to the young woman's neck to measure her pulse. Palath gently set her down on the floor so that she was sitting propped up against the foot of the bed. She was able to hold herself up, but she was in a kind of shock, unable to respond.
"Inara?" Sarah tried calling out her name. The princess didn't respond. "Is this normal?" she turned back to ask Jareth.
"I'm not sure. I've heard this kind of scrying can be exhausting for a Scryist, but I've never met one before let alone seen them work." He moved closer and crouched down in front of the young elf.
Sarah thought about moving her to a bed, but a moment later, the princess snapped out of it. She sucked in a deep breath, then looked up at Toby and stuttered out, "I'm sorry. I didn't expect… I didn't know."
"Inara?" Sarah drew the elf's attention. "What did you see?"
Inara turned to look at her with wide eyes before taking in a steadying breath and pushing up from the floor. However she wobbled unsteadily, so Sarah gently pushed her to sit on the edge of the bed. "I could feel the hatred and contempt they held for you," she finally said to Toby. "They want to harm you, to make you bleed in order to extract revenge."
"Revenge for what?" Jareth asked.
"I'm not sure," Inara answered. "But… I saw the dream they sent you," she looked back up at Toby. "It… must have hurt."
Toby nodded, his eyes glanced down. "Yeah, it did."
"Can you tell us anything about the fae who cast the spell?" Jareth drew her attention back to him.
"I can't tell you much," she answered. "They must have used some kind of concealment spell because my vision was hazy. However I was able to tell that they are a fae with a strange power. It's not like a normal fae's magic. It's almost as if it's mixed with something else."
"Unseelie magic, perhaps?" Jareth supplied.
"No, despite the viciousness of the dream and the hostile intentions, I didn't sense any Unseelie magic."
"Hmm, anything else?"
"Yes, they had a similar aura to King Jareth. It's almost as if they are connected to you in some way."
Jareth's brow furrowed at this. Sarah frowned as well. "It couldn't be Bronwyn again, could it?"
"No," he shook his head. "Bronwyn, not only has no power anymore, but has been sent to live at the Temple of the Four Winds near Avalon. Celeste thought of it and Tuathal took him back to Avalon with him."
"What's the Temple of the Four Winds? Is it possible he might have escaped and is using another fae to cast magic?"
Jareth shook his head. "The temple is located on a remote mountain peak that you need magic to get to and from. It is run by a religious order of fae called the Tuatha De Danann who worship the Goddess Danu. They are a peaceful order who spend much of the day praying to Danu. My cousin will be safe and sound there."
"Okay, well do you have any other relatives who hate your guts?" Sarah raised an eyebrow.
He smirked. "Not that I'm aware of. I'm not sure what this could mean, but we'll have to wait and see what Inara senses when we find the yacht."
Inara, now recovered and back to herself, stood up and folded her hands in front of her. "There is another place you wish me to examine?"
"There is. Two places actually, but perhaps we should wait till tomorrow for you to examine Robert and Karen's bedroom?"
"No, I can do it today. Is the third place nearby?"
"No, we'll have to plan how to get to the yacht as it's being held by law enforcement," Sarah replied.
Inara nodded. "Then I will require a place to sleep for the night."
"It will be arranged," Jareth nodded. "In the meantime, why don't you take another hour to rest then we'll examine the other bedroom."
Inara acquiesced and followed everyone as they walked downstairs. Inara, Palath, and Jareth went into the living room to sit while Sarah and Toby went to the kitchen to prepare some food. It was mid-morning by now, but no one had eaten yet as they'd been too busy between Toby's nightmare and bringing Inara through to the Aboveground.
Sarah mixed up a quick pancake batter and started frying the cakes on a griddle and some bacon in another pan, while Toby set the table, put out the syrup, set out some orange juice, and made coffee. "What do you think about tonight, Tobes?" Sarah asked as she flipped the pancakes. "Do you want to stay here or go to my place for the night?"
Toby hesitated as he set a plate down. "I don't want to sleep in my bedroom here tonight," he said with certainty. "The whole idea of someone sending me dreams and being in my room as I sleep is creepy as hell." He shivered.
"Then let's go to my apartment. Jareth can help me set up some protection spells and I'll buy an air mattress for you so you don't have to sleep on the floor."
Toby nodded. "That sounds good."
"Okay, go let the others know that the food is done."
