Chapter 4:
Donna couldn't believe what she was hearing. She couldn't believe that after the weeks and weeks she spent crying over this man, praying that he would want her back, he would choose now, when she was happy with someone else, to finally say them. But in that moment, she knew exactly what her choice was...
"Andrew," Donna started. "There used to be days where I'd wish more than anything to hear you say those words. Where I would think about all of the things I would give up just to be with you. But then months went by and... well... you stopped being the thing I wished for."
There used to be a hundred things Donna thought she would say to Andrew if she ever saw him again, but none of them seemed to matter anymore.
"I'm glad you changed. I'm glad that you're ready for the right person but that's just not me anymore. And…"
"…and you're glad I dumped you because I was the push you needed to get into politics…" Andrew interrupted.
"No," Donna said sternly. "You weren't the push I needed or my inspiration to get out there. I'm not going to thank you for breaking my heart because it got me where I am today. You don't get credit for where I am now. The only person who gets credit for what I have achieved is me."
"I didn't mean… what I was trying to say was…"
"Andrew, I truly wish you the best. I hope you find what you're looking for. But I already know what I want… and he's waiting for me at our apartment in the rattiest Mets sweatshirt you have ever seen. So I need to go. But I wish you the best of luck. I really do."
Donna kissed his cheek softly. As she stepped out of the coffee shop and into the frigid DC air, she never looked back. After all of these years, she didn't need to.
