The Potter name did have certain advantages, namely being you and your brother had loads of money and you were well known around the school. The disadvantage, though, was that no guy would ever dare look at you because your brother and his friends would threaten to beat them up- and likely follow through with it.
But that didn't matter to you, you weren't interested in any of them. You were interested in the one person who was absolutely off limits. Sirius Black. Of course you had to fall for your brother's best friend and become some silly cliché. It bothered you to no end, but you couldn't blame yourself.
You had no idea how anyone who knew him didn't fall in love with him. But you didn't just fall in love with him because of what everyone else saw, like his hair and his smile. You fell in love with Sirius because of the little things that you discovered in the time you've known him.
The genuine laugh that only a special few got the pleasure of hearing, the caring and worried side of his personality, how he clung to you like a koala bear when he'd had one too many shots of firewhiskey, or let you be the only person to hug him. You learned that he'd had an extraordinary knowledge of the stars, which he'd gotten from his father and passed to you. You spent countless sleepless nights in the common room with him by the fire, telling you about them.
Despite being a year younger than your beloved brother, you were an honorary Marauder. It was a special title, one that only you and James' girlfriend, Lily, could have the pleasure of carrying. Lily was the only one that knew about your 'crush' on Sirius, although it had grown from a crush to actual love years ago.
She kept insisting that he loved you too, but you refused to believe her. He thought of you as a sister, he even said so on many different occasions. She always said that despite all the time you spend staring at him, you would see that he loves you too, but you never did. You didn't know how someone like him could love you, it didn't make sense to you. To him, you were just his best friend's sister, and in turn, his best friend as well.
But all that had been a long time ago. Now, it's been nearly a year since you graduated from Hogwarts, James and Lily now had their own home, and are hours away from getting married. You were so proud of the both of them, having been in love for years and were finally getting married.
Now you were helping Lily with her hair, while making sure everything else for the small ceremony was perfect. "You know," Lily said as you stuck the last bobby pin in her hair. "I can't wait until you and Sirius get together. I've already got the wedding planned."
You snorted and looked at her through the mirror. "You've already planned the wedding, eh? Shouldn't that be left to- and I'm just throwing this out there- the bride, maybe?"
"Oh, ha ha, Y/n." Lily said sarcastically. "At least this time you didn't deny you and Sirius getting together."
You couldn't come up with a response, so you just stuck your tongue out at her and grabbed your bouquets. You handed hers to her and said, "Come on, you've got a wedding to get to."
You tried your hardest to not think about the fact that you were walking down the aisle with Sirius, as he was the best man and you were the maid of honour. But all it took was a reassuring smile from him as he walked down the aisle with you to calm your nerves and allow you to relax.
The rest of the ceremony passed in a blur. One big, beautiful blur. Your brother was a husband now, and you officially had a sister. The reception had been going on for hours, and you had been having the time of your life.
Right now, you stood outside the tent, taking a breather from the party. The fresh spring air had always calmed you down, and the bright stars were able to give you a sense of peace. A small breeze blew past you, ruffling your dress as it went. The party was quieter outside, but was still heard. You kept your eyes on the sky, even when the tent rustled and you could hear someone walking up to you.
"Shouldn't you be inside enjoying the party?" Of course it was Sirius. "After all, you helped plan it."
"Just taking a breather, Sirius," You assured him. There was a beat of comfortable silence before either of you spoke again. "I always knew they'd end up together, you know?"
"Oh really?" He asked. "How?"
"I could see it," You told him, laughing in the back of your mind at what Lily had kept telling you at Hogwarts. "The way they looked at each other when the other wasn't looking. How James slowly stopped asking her out, took the time to actually know her instead. Stopped bullying Snape because of her, too. The little things can show you everything, if you take the time to look."
For the first time since the conversation began, you spared a glance at Sirius, who seemed to be thinking. His hands were stuffed into his pockets and his gaze was glued to the grass around his feet, his eyebrows scrunched in thought.
"The little things." He repeated once before looking up at you. "You mean like the way I always made sure your favourite cereal was on the grocery list at home? The way I can't get through the day without making you laugh at least once because hearing you laugh is my favourite sound in the world, or how I always went to you with my problems because you knew exactly what to say to me to make me feel better?"
"Sirius, what are you…"
"I'm telling you that I love you," Sirius said with a soft determination. "I love you, Y/n M/n Potter. Ever since I laid eyes on you all those years ago, even if I couldn't tell back then, you are my beginning, middle, and end. You are… you are everything."
"Sirius, I…" You shook your head tearfully, partly in happiness, partly in denial. "...I shouldn't be in love with you, Sirius." You said. "I really shouldn't be, but I am. I have been for years, but you're James's best friend, if he found out he would kill the both of us."
Sirius looked like he was deep in thought before saying, "Then let's run away together."
Your eyes nearly bulged out of your head at the proposition, no longer teary, but surprised. "Are you out of your mind? You think we could just run away to a cottage in the hills and live happily ever after?"
"Yeah." Sirius said simply. "I'm not joking, Y/n/n. I have been in love for years and you love me too, we both have enough money to survive without needing a job for a few years. And honestly, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks because I only know one thing. I'm madly in love with you and I don't know what I'll do if I don't spend the rest of my life with you."
Your heart swelled and joyful tears filled your eyes once again at his proclamation. You sucked in a breath before speaking. "I am so terribly in love with you that I don't think I could survive living without you, Sirius Black."
"So, you'll come with me, then?" He asked. "And we can live our life the way we like?"
You just gave him a nod and he broke into the biggest smile you think you'd ever seen him wear, taking your hand and pulling you into him. He dipped his head and pressed his lips to yours, and a feeling of immense calm washed over you. As you kissed the love of your life under the moonlight at your brother's wedding, you couldn't help but think about the future. A life for you and the person in front of you, made from your own decisions. And it filled you with joy.
That night had happened years ago, and it still brought you happiness every time you thought about it. You and Sirius had left the morning after the wedding, all your belongings packed into boxes as you drove into the countryside to find your home. Within a week you'd bought a three bedroom cottage beside a small lake and a forest, enough for you and the family you would go on to have.
You hosted your wedding on the property nearly a year later, similar to James and Lily's, but entirely different all the same. You met your godson and nephew, Harry, that night, and if you weren't being congratulated by guests or given drinks, you would've had him in your arms all night.
It didn't take very long for you and Sirius to have a child of your own. Sirius insisted upon naming your daughter Scarlett Iris Black, and although you were slightly opposed to it at first, you grew to love it once your daughter was born. She had Sirius wrapped around her finger from the moment he laid eyes on her, and you couldn't be more grateful to have him as your husband and her father.
In May of 1982, just 10 months after Harry's first birthday and the birth of your daughter, James and Lily introduced their own daughter to the world, Sophia. Harry had been so excited, despite not understanding the situation, that you were sure Remus had a difficult time taking care of him while James and Lily were at the hospital.
Nearly a year after Sophia was born, you had your son, Elijah Gabriel Black. Unlike Scarlett, Elijah was more attached to you than he was his father, despite growing up to be an almost carbon copy of him. Your life with Sirius was better than you could've dreamt that night that he told you to run away with him.
It didn't take much longer for James and Lily to buy the property next to yours, although there was lots of space between the houses. Godric's Hollow had become too cramped for the four of them, and you thought that your children and theirs should grow up close to each other.
You got to spend the rest of your life surrounded by family, in the most peaceful place on earth. If it weren't for seeing the little things, you don't think you'd have ever gotten this amazing life.
