Chapter 4: That's New
...
..
...
Dean couldn't sleep that night. Not only because the case was confusing in it's entirety, but every time he closed his eyes, he could see it.
Hell.
It wasn't something he could shy away from. He had to face it head on, but he wasn't sure how to do that. He looked at his little brother, who was sleeping peacefully in the beside Dean's. He wouldn't dare tell Sammy about his time in Hell. It would have been too much for him.
Suddenly, Dean got this overwhelming sensation of someone watching him. He slowly reached under his pillow for his gun. He carefully and quietly got out of his bed and made his way to the window where the bright light of the moon shone in through the room. He carefully opened the curtains more to look for someone outside, but he didn't see anything. He began to wonder if his paranoia was at an all time high since he got out of Hell.
.
The next morning, the boys got themselves ready for the day.
"Where are we starting first?" Dean mumbled as he brushed his teeth. Having lived with Dean majority of his life, Sam knew exactly what he was saying even with a mouth full of toothpaste.
"Well, I was thinking we talk to Charlie." Sam started. From the bathroom, Dean spit out the toothpaste and washed off his toothbrush and came back wiping his mouth with a small towel.
"Why?" Dean questioned, his eyebrows furrowed.
"Well, I want to get more insight on these bear sightings." Sam explained. "We could tell him we were planning to go hiking and we wanted to see if there were any precautions we could take in case we see one."
"We can. We have guns." Dean said matter-of-factly. Sam glared at his brother.
"I know that, Dean but that doesn't mean Charlie does."
"Oh, right."
"Let's just go talk to him and see what he can give us."
The boys packed their belongings they needed for said hike and made their way to the sheriff's office. Once they had arrived, they walked up the steps and into the lobby of the building. Charlie was standing by the front desk, talking to the receptionist. Her eyes moved from Charlie to the boys.
"What can I help you with?" She asked. Charlie looked to see the boys standing behind him.
"Boys, what a surprise!" Charlie said with glee. "Excuse me, Janet." He said to the receptionist before looking back at the boys. "What are you guys doing here?"
"Well, we were hoping we could talk to you?" Sam smiled.
"About?" Charlie questioned.
"Well, we heard this town is great for it's sight seeing so that's exactly what is on our agenda for the day." Dean explained.
"Well, follow me into my office and we can talk." Charlie said. He turned and began walking down the hall and the boys followed him. They entered a small, dark office where a desk sat in the middle and two chairs sat on the opposite side of his chair.
"Take a seat boys." Charlie said as he sat down in his seat. The boys sat down and cleared their throats as they made themselves comfortable. "So you wanna go hiking?" Charlie asked, putting his hands on his desk and intertwining his fingers as he pulled his seat up closer.
"Yes, sir." Sam answered.
"Well, I would be careful out there." Charlie suggested. "With all these bear sightings, I don't want you boys to get hurt."
"Are you sure it's a bear?" Dean retorted. Sam slapped his brother's arm with the back of his hand and gave him a dirty look. Dean shrugged his shoulders and leaned forward in his seat. "Because, it's not sounding like bears."
"What are you suggesting it is?" Charlie's suspicion raised in the boys.
"Anything but a bear." Dean pronounced. He sat back in his chair and gave his brother a smug smile. Frustration grew in Sam's face as he glared at Dean. He looked back at Charlie, his muscles in his face relaxing.
"I think what Dean means.."
"I know what I mean." Dean interrupted. Charlie looked at the boys with worry.
"Look guys, we don't want to scare anyone in town so please, don't be going around telling people what you think it is or isn't." He voiced. It was hard enough with the rumors of a bear lurking the woods to keep the citizens of Forks calm, Charlie didn't need more people worrying and coming to the station and making a ruckus out of it all.
Sam eyed his brother carefully as Charlie spoke. He nudged Dean with his elbow and gave him his "I told you so" look.
"We'll be careful, Charlie. We always are." Dean finally spoke. Charlie nodded his head and leaned back in his chair, putting his hands behind his head.
"You guys should take Bells with you. She's been having a hard time." Charlie added.
"What's been going on?" Sam questioned. Charlie drew in a deep breath as he leaned forward in his chair. He rubbed the bridge of his nose as he sighed.
"She was dating this guy-"
"A guy?" Dean interrupted, suddenly becoming overprotective.
"Yeah, he recently broke up with her and he and his family skipped town. They're gone."
"Just like that?" Sam asked.
"Just like that. You know they all disconnected their phones? They couldn't even give Bella the chance to stay in touch." Charlie grew frustrated with his daughter's situation. "Now she's up half the night because she has nightmares about it."
"Why?" Sam questioned.
"I don't know. Maybe she worries about them. I don't know. It's a messed up situation." Charlie explained. "Please take her with you so she can get out and have some family time. Don't get me wrong, she does hang out with a good kid every now and again, but I think it would do her some good to hang out with you guys."
"We would be glad to, right Dean?" Sam asked his brother with a smile on his face. Dean smiled back at his little brother.
"Oh yeah."
