Chapter Three
Two weeks after the bonfire, Angela and Bella were walking into Biology when they noticed Edward Cullen had returned and was sitting at the same blacktop that he had on Bella's first day. He was once again staring at Bella a little too intensely for her liking and this time she glared at him, the guy was so strange.
Angela nudged Bella in the ribs as they continued to walk towards their table. "Why are we glaring at Edward Cullen?" She whispered into her ear.
"Because the few times I've seen him, the freak has been staring at me like I'm his new toy and I don't like it. That guy creeps me the hell out." Bella murmured back as they took their seats.
In the three weeks since Bella had moved to Forks, she'd developed a routine and had reconnected with her old friends as well as making new ones. She'd started to become part of the in crowd at Forks High, not due to being a jock or anything of the sort but because everyone genuinely liked her. Even Lauren had gotten over her initial dislike of her once her friendships with Jessica and Angela had been fixed. She'd even spoken to Emmett, Rosalie, and Jasper as they were in some of her other classes, and they seemed okay. Alice being a year below her had meant that they didn't overlap in any classes and since the Cullens kept to themselves during lunch, she still hadn't talked to her. However, Edward was the only Cullen she got a bad vibe from.
"He's always been a bit strange, stranger than the rest of his siblings." Angela managed to whisper back before class began.
Both girls noticed that Edward had tensed at her last sentence and wondered if it was possible that he had heard them from where he was seated. As Mr. Banner started the class, they quickly got lost in the work and forgot about it. When the bell rang to dismiss them, Bella packed up her things quickly and waited for Angie to do the same. From her peripheral she noticed Edward seemed to be hesitating by the door and she nudged Angie with her elbow to get her to notice. The girls stared at each other in confusion before walking towards the door slowly. When they passed through the threshold, Edward fell into step behind them.
Normally, the girls would peel off in separate directions as they didn't share their sixth period class, but Angela stayed close – some long dead instinct telling her that Edward wasn't to be trusted around her friend. They walked together to Bella's US government elective, a class she shared with Jasper Hale and then said their goodbyes. Edward has stayed just a few paces behind the entire walk and when Bella turned into her classroom, he turned around and walked off to his own class.
Bella shook her head as she sat down in her usual seat at the back, one that happened to be next to Jasper.
"What's wrong Miss Bella?" Jasper asked quietly as she took out her class materials.
Bella looked over at him and simply said "Your brother Edward is really strange."
Jasper tipped back his head and laughed loudly, the students around them looking at him in shock as he normally was the quietest of the Cullen brood. They quickly looked away because they liked Jasper and it was good to see him act his age every now and then.
"He's the baby of the family and a little spoiled, I'm afraid." He got out once he'd calmed down, the smile on his face breathtaking.
Bella was a little stunned and had to pinch herself so she wouldn't just stare at him. Jasper Hale was incredibly attractive at about 6'3 with his lean but muscular build and honey blond hair. He also had a scar on his cheek that kept him from being too pretty and instead made him rugged. His smile was perfect white teeth and blindingly gorgeous. She returned the smile and then shook it off as the class started.
Two hours later had her walking out to her car with Jessica who was prattling on about the homecoming dance that was coming up in another month. For the first time since moving to town, she saw the owners of the Volvo, though she had already guessed. Slipping into the driver's seat was none other than Edward Cullen. Of course, that asshole was the one who had cut her off on her first day, he was so pretentious he probably hadn't even cared.
"Can we study for Friday's test tonight?" Jessica changed the subject as they neared their cars parked towards the back of the lot.
"The gang and I are starting our weekly meet ups today, but we can totally cram tomorrow?" Bella replied a little shyly.
She didn't want Jessica to think she preferred one group over the other, but this was the only day a week that everyone could guarantee hanging out.
"That's okay, we'll rope Angela in and bring some snacks! Want to do your place or mine?" Jessica was at her own car door now and opening it.
"We'll go to yours!" Bella said from her own car, and they said their goodbyes.
Bella drove towards the reservation as they would be meeting at the old diner, it was even more run down than the one in Forks, but it was an old tradition.
She pulled into the parking lot of the building aptly named "The Diner" and saw that Leah's tan 4runner was already there.
Grabbing her wallet out of the glove compartment, she went into the diner, and saw Leah and Seth already sitting in the corner booth that they always occupied. Jacob didn't seem to be there yet, but considering the boy was always late, no one was surprised.
"Hey guys!" She exclaimed happily as she slid in next to Seth and gave him a side hug.
"Hey Hells Bells!" Leah had a wide smile on her face.
"Hey Belly Bee, how was school?" Seth asked, returning her hug.
"It was okay, that weirdo Edward Cullen came back." Bella rolled her eyes and started checking out the menu.
Her quick glance at the menu before choosing her usual made her miss the look exchanged between the siblings.
"Did he do anything?" Leah asked a bit too casually.
Bella picked up on the tension and chuckled "No he didn't, and I can handle him guys, don't worry about me."
The brat pack was very protective of one another and although they didn't know it yet, soon they would all be more than capable of doing just that, even against all the big bads of the world.
Jacob showed up ten minutes later with lip gloss smudged on his lips and cheek, it didn't seem like he'd noticed, and he tried to sit down casually with a "Hey guys, sorry I'm late! I was checking something out at school."
The trio looked at each other and then at Jake and burst out laughing.
"Don't you mean, checking someone out?" Bella chortled out and they all laughed harder when Jake started to blush.
Seth mimed wiping off his face and Jake did just that and groaned when he saw the gloss come off on the napkin.
"Not a word, let's just order our food, you dicks."
This set them off again and they were still red in the face when the waitress came by to take their order.
They caught up on the last two weeks –which was the whole point of their new weekly hang outs- while they waited for their food. As Seth made a joke that set the group off again, Bella saw them again. The group from Sequim that she had seen with Jessica and Angela. What were the odds that they were now on the reservation? She remembered that she had thought their skin was similar to her friends on the reservation, was it possible that some of them lived here and the others were occupants of Forks?
No, as beautiful as they were Bella would have remembered meeting them at some point in her life.
Leah turned around to see what she was looking at and quickly whipped around.
"Wipe the drool from your mouth, Bells." She cackled as she turned to face them again.
"I wasn't drooling!" Bella snapped defensively "I saw them in Port Ang a few weeks ago and was thinking how strange it was that they're here. None of them lived here when I last visited." And yet here both groups were, and Bella got the impression that they had known each other for a very long time, their entire lives even, just like the brat pack. Much too long for them to have coincidentally met each other in town.
She shook her head; she'd always had an overactive imagination.
"Forget it." She muttered and while her friends glanced at each other, they decided to respect her wishes. Bella wasn't an easy girl to upset, but she wasn't someone you wanted to upset.
They finished their early dinner and said quick goodbyes before heading their separate ways. As Bella was slipping behind the wheel of her convertible, she looked up and into the diner and made eye contact with a gorgeous pair of ice blue eyes. She felt something and sucked in a sharp breath while simultaneously watching his eyes widen. Bella tore her eyes away and turned on the car before peeling away from the diner. If she had glanced back towards the glass, she would have seen the man pushing at his friends to get out of the booth.
She drove home and parked in her usual spot at the top of the driveway before grabbing her backpack and trudging inside. Something about those men had left her feeling unsettled and she blew a breath out her nose before settling at her desk and pulling out her homework.
A few hours later she heard Charlie unlock the door and the telltale sounds of him taking off his gun belt and locking the gun itself into the safe installed in the wall by the door. She paused her tv and figured now was as good a time as any to get in a snack since she had her early dinner.
Charlie was sitting in front of the tv already with the news on, eating pizza straight out the box. She plopped down next to him.
"Heya, pops. How was work today?" She asked as she grabbed a slice from his box.
Charlie halfheartedly slapped her hands away and mumbled something about it being his pizza. Bella looked him in the eye and smirked before taking a giant bite.
"Brat. It was good, slow, thankfully nothing to worry about." He mumbled around a mouthful of food.
"I saw this group of guys, twice now. Some of them look like they could be from the Rez but the other half are definitely white. None of them lived in Forks last time I visited, who are they?" Bella tried to ask nonchalantly as she reached for another slice of pizza.
Charlie, however, had sat up straight and stiffened. He looked Bella in the eyes and said, "Stay away from them."
"What, why? If they'd done something, why didn't Leah and the guys let me know earlier?" Bella sputtered, shocked that he had reacted so seriously.
"Bella, I mean it. Stay away from those guys." He snapped while getting up and walking into the kitchen.
She sat in the couch in shock and confusion for another few minutes but when it was clear that Charlie would not be coming back to explain, she murmured goodnight and went to take a shower.
By the time she got out, Charlie was watching some cop tv show that she could hear from upstairs and she sighed in annoyance before stomping off to her room.
Her TV had idled but she pressed play where she had left off and snuggled under her covers.
Charlie's reaction just confirmed to her that something strange was going on in this town and it made her more determined to find out what that was.
That night as she slept, the golden glow that had been surrounding her in her sleep since she arrived, glowed brighter and brighter. When it reached a point where the entire room was bathed in light, it exploded outwards in a wave that crested far and wide and as quickly as it happened it receded back into Bella and she settled.
Across the town and in La Push, people jolted up in bed and looked around trying to figure out where the power had come from.
In the Cullen household, they were trying to figure out what it was they had felt. The Cullens only knew of vampires and shapeshifters. Unbeknownst to them, their whole world was going to change, along with many others.
I don't know what it is but I keep struggling to write these chapters even though I have a general idea of what it is I want to see happen. Consider this both another filler and an important chapter. We see Bella come across those strange men again and unleash a tidal wave of power, what could that mean for the sleepy town of Forks? I think that I'm going to try to switch POV's for the next chapter and maybe that will help me push this story along. However, consider this a slow burn because I don't even know who I want Bella to end up with and I get grossed out by those stories where they're in love right away even when it's something like imprinting. - Marieorsomething
