A/N: Sorry this is so late. My AC isn't working and I'm slowly melting while at the keyboard. :P

Chapter 4

"Kate, what the hell is going on?" It was her father, Jacob, asked. He had come barreling into his office, where the brunette, Kara, and Luke had been told to wait when they arrived at Crows Headquarters.

"I have no idea, but it would seem Alice sent some of her goons after us. How did she know Luke and I were going to pick up Kara at the airport?" Kate gave her father a look, wondering if there was a bug on someone's phone or in their apartments. Worse still a mole inside the Crows, which had already happened once before.

"I didn't tell anyone what your plans were," he said.

"Sweep the SUV. Make sure there aren't any bugs or tracking devices. We could be over thinking this," Luke suggested.

"Seems a little high tech for Alice," Kate pointed out.

"I would agree but that's the simplest solution for now. I'll make sure it's swept," Jacob picked up his desk phone and quickly dispatch a team to check the vehicle.

"Now, this was not the way I imagine Kate wanted to invite you to Gotham, Miss Danvers," the elder Kane said.

"I've been known to get myself into trouble, so a little trouble is not a big deal. It's nice to meet you sir," Kara smiled and she stuck out a hand.

"Nice to meet you as well," he accepted it and gave her hand a shake, noticing her firm grip. "Do we need to get you checked into your hotel?"

"Kate has graciously offer to out me up at her place. I'm only staying a few days just so I can get the interview and then it's back to National City," the blonde explained.

"Oh, very good. I have to ask though – why now? It would seem you made a trip here before to write about our vigilante," Jacob said.

"Well, she knew I write about Supergirl, so she contacted me and asked me to write about her. I promised that she would not need to reveal her identity and that we could hold the interview somewhere she was comfortable. You'd be surprised how many interviews I have on building rooftops," Kara smiled.

"I bet," the elder Kane's tone was one she couldn't place but luckily, they were saved by the ring of the phone on the desk. Jacob answered and Kara gave a sideways glance at Kate. The brunette gave her a knowing look, her father was digging for information.

"Well, it would seem the SUV doesn't have a tracker on it. The team scooped up all of Alice's helpers but as you can guess, they're less than helpful," he told them.

"So maybe they just were out looking for what they thought was an easy target," Kara shrugged.

"Could be but Kate, I want you to be careful. Maybe staying at your place isn't a good idea," Jacob said.

"I have security at my place besides if Alice wanted me dead, she's had multiple opportunities, and yet here I am. Now, I'm going to take Kara to my place and hopefully get some sleep," Kate said. Luke was trying hard not to chuckle, especially when he saw Kara blush. The brunette didn't even realize how it sounded and her blonde friend figured that between her night job and trying to figure out a way to tell her father about it, Kate wasn't actually sleeping.

"Go, we'll talk in the morning," Jacob nodded. Kate didn't say anything and left the room, Luke and Kara quickly followed. The trio went back to the SUV and Luke hopped in the driver's seat while the girls got into the back. Kara noticed that Kate was rubbing her forehead.

"You aren't sleeping, are you?" She kept her voice down so Luke wouldn't hear.

"No, I'm not," Kate heaved a sigh.

"I made a promise and I intend to keep it, but you need to look out for yourself. I won't leave you until I'm sure you're taking care of yourself," the blonde told her.

"I'll be fine," the brunette said.

"You can't do your night job if you can't stay awake for your day job," Kara gave her a look. Kate heaved a sigh, knowing her friend was right.

"We're here," Luke announced.

"Thanks for all your help tonight Luke. I hope we can hang out before I go home," the blonde seemed just as perky as when he'd picked her up at the airport an hour and a half ago. It was now two am, usually the bewitching hour for Batwoman and her team.

"I hope so too. Do me a favor and maybe not mention what happened tonight in your article?" He asked as the ladies popped out of the back seat.

"My lips are sealed," Kara smiled as Kate headed for the trunk.

"Kate, we didn't make that stop at Wayne Enterprises that you needed," Luke suddenly realized.

"Do it later this morning," she told him.

"All righty. I'll see you at the office," he said.

"Thanks," Kate smiled slightly and closed the hatch. Kara took her suitcase and Luke then pulled away from the curb leaving the two ladies to head inside the building.

"How do you get sleep above the bar?" Kara wondered as they climbed the stairs.

"Had the floor insulated with sound-proofing. A building this old doesn't tend to be insulated well," Kate explained. The blonde nodded and they reached the penthouse a few minutes later.

"Off to bed with us," the brunette said as she opened the front door. This time Kara chuckled as they entered the penthouse.

"Get some sleep lady. I have my eyes on the couch," she smirked. It was then that Kate realized what she said.

"Well, I had intended to give you my bed and I'd take the couch but if you insist," the brunette told her.

"You need good sleep and the only way you're getting it is in your own bed. I have slept inside a space capsule, I can sleep anywhere," Kara said, heading for the couch, where a pillow and blanket were waiting.

"The bathroom is just off to the left there. Let me know if you need anything," Kate offered.

"Will do. Good night," Kara smiled as she shooshed her friend off to her bedroom.
