"Are you sure you don't regret not going?" Oscar inquired as Ruby got her favorite video game, Ultimate Ninja Death Battle, set up in the lounge, "I don't want to be the reason you don't have fun with your friends."
Turning back to face him, Ruby said, "Oscar, you're my friend too. And besides, playing video games sounds way better to me than some stupid dance club. That's always been Yang's thing, not mine."
"Well, if you say so."
Ruby smiled then turned the game on, pulling out her Scroll so that she could give Oscar a quick tutorial on the controls.
"Okay, you press "A" to attack, "B" to defend, and then make combos with the arrows on the left," she instructed, "You'll get the hang of it after a few rounds."
"I don't know about that," Oscar replied as he and Ruby sat down on the couch and started the game.
"Honestly, I don't expect you to get it right away. It took me forever to even…"
Ruby couldn't finish her sentence, for she was dumbfounded at how easily Oscar was able to beat her after a Cliffnotes explanation on the controls. What the hell was going on right now? Oscar tried not to laugh at Ruby's stupefied expression, but it was proving to be very difficult the longer she remained quiet.
"You okay?" he asked, still refraining from laughing as much as he could.
Ruby turned to face him, a pout on her face, and replied, "Best two out of three."
A Few Minutes Later
"Okay, so video games was a bust," Ruby sighed, still pouting while crossing her arms.
"I'm a fast learner, Ruby," Oscar lightly teased, "You shouldn't have told me how everything works, then maybe you would've won."
"Shut up." A thought then crossed Ruby's mind, "How good are you at card games?"
"Pretty good, actually. That was one of my favorite pastimes back home."
"Alright, not going down that avenue. What about board games?"
His expression becoming one of annoyance, Oscar questioned, "Are you just trying to find something that I might potentially lose to make up for the devastating loss you just suffered?"
"NO!" Clearing her throat, Ruby continued, "I'm just trying to find something to pass the time."
"Right." Taking a second to think, Oscar suggested, "So, how good are you at checkers?"
A Few More Minutes Later
"How do I keep losing?!" Ruby exclaimed in disbelief as Oscar racked up his third win in a row, "This is the simplest game in the history of mankind! What the heck?!"
"I'm good at strategizing," Oscar replied, starting to put the game up, "Jaune's been helping me with that, as has Ironwood."
Crossing her arms and pouting yet again, Ruby muttered, "You're cheating is what you're doing."
"You know, I heard that."
Ruby kept pouting for a couple of seconds until an idea popped into her head. An awful idea. This was the moment Ruby Rose got a wonderful, awful idea and smirked. Oscar was now more afraid of her than he'd ever been in the four or so months he'd known her. All he could really do was gulp in fear.
"Uh, Ruby,...are you okay?"
Her face now contorted with the most terrifying grin she'd ever made, Ruby menacingly answered, " I know just what to do."
"Do you think Ruby's okay?" Yang asked as she, Weiss, Blake, Jaune, Ren, and Nora all returned from their night out dancing.
"Yang, this is Ruby we're talking about," Weiss responded, "I'm sure she just played video games all night or watched a movie with Oscar."
"That or she's already asleep," Blake added.
Nora suddenly held her arm out to stop her teammates and yelled, "Guys, stop! I smell something."
Jaune glanced at everyone else before cautiously asking, "Like...what?"
Sniffing the air, Nora answered, "Cinnamon, apples, and a buttery flaky crust. DID RUBY BAKE AN APPLE PIE WITHOUT US?!"
"Aww, that's not fair! I want some pie too!"
"Guys, I think you're overexaggerating," Ren tried to mediate, "That could be air freshener from someone's dorm."
"Ren, my nose is never wrong," Nora stated, poking Ren's chest as she spoke, "And I smell a fresh apple pie!"
"It's gotta be in the lounge!" Jaune suggested with enthusiasm, "That's where Ruby bakes her cookies!"
"To the lounge!"
Everyone took off towards the lounge, minus Ren (he opted to walk rather than run), and tumbled all over each other trying to get to the door. When they made it and the door slid open, all jaws dropped as they found Ruby and Oscar in the middle of a pie eating contest. Their hair was tucked into hair nets and the innards of the pies were all over their faces as they worked at finishing their pies. It took everything in their friends' power to not burst into a laughing fit, but were caught off guard when Ruby's head shot up and she made some kind of incoherent noise from her mouth.
"Yes, I did it!" she shouted through a mouth full of pie, "I did it!"
Oscar's head came up a second later and he said as he swallowed his own full mouth, "You know, Ruby, you need to swallow it before you declare victory."
Swallowing her food, Ruby declared, "It doesn't matter, farm boy! My pan was clean before yours was! Finally, I beat you at something tonight!"
"Yeah, about that,...I was done about five minutes ago. I just kept my head down to mess with you."
Ruby's eye twitched as Oscar stood up to get some paper towels, scruffing Ruby's head as he passed by her. When he spotted their friends, he waved and called out to them.
"Hey guys. When did you get back?"
"Just now," Yang answered, "Nora smelled some apple pie and we came charging over."
"And how did you guys get those pies, anyway?" Weiss inquired.
"Oh, I went down to the cafeteria and asked the workers if they had any leftover pies from today," Oscar casually answered as he wet a couple of paper towels, "When I told them why I was asking, they were pretty on board with it. I guess even Atlesians have a sense of humor."
"Believe me, we all do deep down."
Chuckling, Oscar handed Ruby one of the damp paper towels, but she made no move to try and wipe her face. This concerned everyone greatly as Yang started going into "overprotective-big-sister" mode.
"What did you do to Ruby?" she demanded.
"Ruby and I had a game night and I've beaten her at everything," Oscar explained as he wiped his face, "I think I may have broken her from the constant losses. Sorry, Yang."
"Aww, that's okay, Oscar. I'm just glad you kept Ruby company while we were out."
Oscar smiled and watched as Yang began wiping Ruby's face, which made the latter snap back into reality and complain about how she wasn't a kid anymore. He and the others chuckled at Ruby's ferocious attempt at getting pie remnants off of her face, making him extremely grateful for everything he now had. Even if one of those things was a sore loser of a best friend. Regardless, he wouldn't have Ruby any other way than her truest self. Normal never suited her anyway.
