Hey everyone. Thanks for all the likes and comments. They really help motivate me to keep writing. This isn't my favorite chapter, and it didn't really come out how I imagined it. I've written it multiple times and have come to the conclusion that no matter how many times I write it, I'm not gonna be satisfied with it so I decided to just post it so I can move onto the next chapters. Hope you still enjoy it!
Trudy couldn't believe how unrecognizable Adam was. She expected him to look horrible, but not like this. If she wasn't told that was him, she would have walked right by him. His face was so swollen and bruised, more so on the left than the right, and covered with cuts. There were tubes and wires coming from everywhere. She just stood there staring at him. He looked so broken; he was so broken.
Will Halstead entered the room behind her, causing Trudy to jump a little at the sound of his voice. "Sorry, didn't mean to scare you. Just came to check on him."
Trudy just nodded. She seemed to have lost her voice as soon as she entered the room and hadn't been able to find it yet. Will seemed to have noticed the shock she was in. It was like she was afraid to get close to him. "I know the team was in here briefly before they left, but you should sit with him, it seems to help."
Trudy nodded again and slowly made her way to a chair on the right side of Adams bed. She watched as Will checked him over, and felt her voice slowly coming back. "Is he…"
"He's holding steady for now." Will offered, continuing to check Adam over.
"For now?"
"His vitals aren't great, they're not in a danger zone yet, but they're bordering it."
Trudy nodded and waited a few seconds before speaking up. "You think he's got a chance?"
Will seemed a bit thrown off by the question. He knew Trudy was a straight shooter, but he had never experienced it firsthand. The initial hesitation did nothing to ease Trudy's mind. "The fact that he's still here with us is pretty much a miracle, but it's also why I think he has a chance. Most people wouldn't have even made it to the hospital, let alone through surgery. It was touch and go for a bit, but Adam did both. He's not ready to throw in the towel yet." He then patted her on the shoulder and headed for the door.
"Will." Trudy stopped him. "Thanks." She appreciated him being honest with her and not giving her the 'were gonna do everything we can' speech. Once will was gone, she turned her attention back to Adam. She gently put her hand on top of his right hand, being careful not to jostle any of the IV lines, but wanting him to physically feel her presence, not just hear her voice. "Hey, pretty boy. I guess I can't really call you that right now, can I?" She waited, hoping for some sort of jab back, but knew it wasn't going to come. "I need you to keep fighting, Adam. Kim still needs you… the team still needs you… I still need you. What happened to you isn't fair, but I promise you, the team is out there right now hunting the guy down that did this to you. They're going to find him, and they're going to make sure he never does this to another person. I promise."
Trudy wiped a few tears away as she continued staring at Adam. "You know, you really are one of my favorites at the district. I can always count on you to find some type of humor in any situation, I just wish you'd wake up so we could find some sort of humor in THIS situation, cause right now, I can't find any. And if for some reason, you remember this conversation when you wake up, I will deny ever saying it. Let's just keep it between the two of us."
"Might as well make that the three of us." Trudy jumped as she spotted Kim leaning in the doorway.
"Burgess… What are you doing here? I thought you were out looking for the guy that did this… How much of that did you hear?"
"I heard enough." Kim shrugged, wiping a tear off her cheek.
"Ok, that answers one question. What are you doing here? Did you find the guy that did this?" Trudy tried keeping her tough exterior showing, but she knew there was no point right now.
Kim shook her head. "Not yet, we have a few leads but nothing solid yet. Our strongest lead is an ex-girlfriend of Rivero. Me and Kev brought her in, but she's not talking. I may have done a little damage to her face." Kim sighed, crossing her arms. "Voight took me off the case. Said I was too close."
"He's probably right. You should be here with him anyway. It's your face he'd want to see when he wakes up, not mine."
"I'm not so sure about that." Kim sat in a chair on the opposite side of Trudy. "I hurt him pretty bad during the Barilla case."
"Can't be as bad as he is now." Trudy tried to make Kim feel better.
"That's debatable. I accused him of killing Barilla in cold blood. Never even asked if he was ok after the shooting. I tried to apologize, but he didn't really want to hear it. We were supposed to go out to dinner before his dad's retirement party. He canceled that, but told me I was still welcomed at the party. Part of me feels like he didn't really mean that, but I showed up anyway. It was on the way home that I seen the accident. What if this is my fault, Trudy?" Kim could no longer hold back the tears she was trying to hold back.
If the circumstances were different, Trudy probably would have sided with Adam and told Kim she needed to make things right. She couldn't kick Kim while she was down though. Kim needed support, someone to tell her none of this was her fault and that everything was going to be ok. "Burgess, I want you to look at me. "How could you possibly think any of this was your fault? You're not the one that crashed your car into him."
"If I would have just kept my mouth shut, he would have been at some restaurant with me, not at that intersection. My actions put him at that intersection." Kim sobbed.
"That doesn't make this your fault, Kim. It just makes it an accident. The only person at fault here, is the guy that hit Adam. You understand me?" Trudy really hoped she was getting her point across.
Moments later, Will Halstead returned to check Adam over again. They wanted to do hourly checks on him to make sure they caught anything before it got too far. Trudy and Kim could tell by the look on Will's face that something wasn't right. "What is it? His vitals still low?" Trudy asked.
Will didn't answer right away as he paged Dr. Choi.
"Will?" Kim needed answers.
"Sorry. His temperatures up to 101.6. I'm gonna need you guys to step out of the room while we run a few more tests. I'm sorry." With that, he ushered the two women out of the room. Kim had tried to protest that she didn't want to leave Adam, but Trudy had helped Will usher her out and into the waiting room.
