Quick authors note: First, sorry about the error in the last part. It was supposed to say "Sam sat up and took Kurt's hand". Second, this chapter has a scene with needles. If you don't like needles, you can skip that part. It's not really important it's just for tests and follow-up shots. I hope you enjoy this part!
PS sorry it's been so long. I've been really busy lately. I'll try to upload the next part sooner
~Part 4~
Kurt woke up the next morning curled into Sam's side. He felt the warm rays of sun coming in through the window and hitting his face. It felt nice in the cold hospital room. He felt like he was home again. He actually believed it for a minute. That was until he opened his eyes and looked around. He still had an IV stuck in his left hand. He still had one of those clips on his right index finger. He still had stickers on his chest. And worst of all, a cart – that wasn't there when he went to sleep – with about three needles sat across the room. One was empty and the other two had clear liquids inside them. Kurt winced at the thought of what was coming. He hated needles and really hopped Sam would be on his side this time and agree that he didn't need any of it. It was about fifteen minutes until the boy next to him stirred awake. Kurt looked into Sam's eyes and smiled.
"Good morning Sammy," he said smiling.
Sam smiled back. "Good morning baby. How'd you sleep?" Sam replied.
"Fine. I'm not excited about today though," Kurt said glancing back over at the cart.
Sam followed his gaze and sat up when he saw what Kurt was nervous about.
"You'll be ok baby. And I'll talk to the nurse to see if you really need all that," Sam said.
Kurt couldn't have been happier to hear those words come out of Sam's mouth. If he didn't think Kurt needed it, it wouldn't happen. Kurt tried not to focus on the needles and looked at the clock. It was about 10 in the morning. He could faintly hear the birds outside chirping and what sounded like footsteps outside in the hallway. Footsteps in the hallway. Kurt looked at the door just as a female nurse came in.
"Oh great! You're both awake," she said with a big smile.
Kurt pushed himself into Sam's side and felt Sam's arm wrap around him.
"I'm nurse Amber. I just have to take a few blood samples and give you two quick shots. It will be over before you know it!" She told Kurt.
That smile never left her face. Even as she wheeled the cart of needles over to the bed. Kurt held onto Sam and looked at him desperately. Sam looked at the nurse.
"What are the shots for? And uh- why do you need to take his blood?" Sam asked.
The smile grew. It actually grew. As if she had been hopping, they would ask a question about the needles she was about to stick into Kurt's arm.
"I have to take some blood to run tests. Make sure everything is out of his system and stuff like that. The shots are follow-up shots to ones we gave Kurt before we brought him here," the nurse said.
Sam nodded a little and looked at Kurt.
"You'll be ok baby. I'm right here," Sam told him.
Kurt pushed himself into Sam's side as much as he could. Sam wrapped his arms tighter around him and kissed Kurt's head.
"It's ok baby," he told him.
Kurt felt hands on his arm and flinched away.
"Hold still," the nurse told him.
"You startled him. He wasn't expecting you to just grab at his arm without a warning," Sam said defensively.
"Kurt, can you sit up?" the nurse asked.
Kurt reluctantly sat up and looked at the nurse. She took his arm again but this time he saw her coming. She tied a stretchy band around Kurt's arm and used a small wet wipe to clean where she would be taking blood from. Sam held Kurt's hand and kissed his cheek.
"It's ok baby. Just look at me and take a deep breath," Sam said.
Kurt looked at Sam and nodded a little. He took a deep breath and then felt the needle pierce his skin. Kurt teared up and squeezed Sam's hand. He held his breath and stayed as still as possible as the nurse took his blood.
"You're ok baby just breathe," Sam told him.
Kurt shook his head a little bit. Sam put his other hand on Kurt's cheek.
"You have to breathe. She's almost done Kurt just breathe," Sam told him.
Kurt closed his eyes and continued to hold his breath. As soon as the nurse was done, Kurt stopped holding his breath and fell into Sam crying.
"Shhh, it's ok baby it's done now. You're ok," Sam told him.
"Can you hold this cotton ball on your arm Kurt?" the nurse asked.
Kurt didn't respond. Sam took the cotton ball from the nurse and gently pressed it onto Kurt's arm. The nurse went to roll up Kurt's sleeve but Sam stopped her.
"Just give him a minute," he told her.
The nurse nodded and stepped back to give them some space. Kurt held onto Sam tightly and cried into his chest.
"It's ok baby just relax. I know it hurt but it's over now. Just two shots and it's all done. You can do it," Sam told him.
Kurt nodded a little bit but didn't move from where he was. Kurt felt the cold wipe on his arm. When it went away, Kurt braced himself, making sure his arm was relaxed. He felt a pinch but it actually wasn't too bad. It would be sore for a few days but it didn't hurt like getting his blood taken did. He felt the nurse put the band aid on his arm and then Sam kissed his head.
"One more baby," Sam told him.
Kurt nodded to show he was ready for the next one. Again, he felt the cold wipe on his arm, just a little below the last one. He relaxed his arm and took one last deep breath. This time when he felt a pinch, it felt like someone was digging their nails into his arm as hard as possible and breaking skin. Kurt whimpered. He instantly felt Sam's hand in his hair and his lips on his forehead. After what felt like forever, Kurt felt the nurse put the second band aid on his arm. Kurt felt the nurse put a piece of medical tape over the cotton ball that was pressed against the inside of his arm. As soon as the nurse left the room, he felt Sam's hands on his back and head. He let his fiancé lay him on his back and smiled when he felt Sam press a soft kiss on his lips.
"I love you so much Kurt. You did so good," Sam said softly.
Kurt smiled more and gently held onto Sam's hand.
"I'm not going anywhere," Sam told him.
Kurt felt Sam lay down next to him and gently wrap his arm around him. Sam softly hummed to Kurt and they both stayed there until they were fast asleep.
