Superlane Kiss Prompt
Soft Kiss AND Being Unable To Open Their Eyes For A Few Moments Afterward
Things are not going too great for Kara right now. Her city still hates her and it seems that no matter what she does, she is unable to win its trust back.
It'sIt beyond frustrating, beyond angering, and it all just makes her want to scream. Scream so loud that her throat burns and head pounds with pain that she rarely ever feels. Scream so loud that, finally, someonesome one will hearhere her cry.
Making things up with Cat Grant – as confusing as Supergirl and Kara's relationship with her may be – was the first step towards stomping down the feeling of helplessness that is looming over her, threatening to crush her constantly. Cat hasn't lost faith in her, and that's notdefinitely worth nothing. something.
Then everything goes to hell at the DEO and Kara can't even begin to feel guilty for it all before she is saying a temporary goodbye to her sister and Hank. They are off to go find Alex and Kara's father. She isn't sure what she'll do without them, but she knows that her biggest goal right now is to win the city back – if it's even possible.
Cat's words – "I said it won't be easy, but I didn't say it would be impossible" – echo in her head as Kara flies around the tall buildings of National City. She's on her way back from another failed mission.
She zooms past her apartment balcony without much thought other than shehe knows that she doesn't want to just sit by herself. If she sits by herself then she might actually go insane with how hard she will try not to think about anything. So instead, she keeps going past the city's limits and the familiar above-ground buildings of the DEO headquarters comes into view.
Listening to the unmistakable way the sound of her boot-cladded steps echo off the tall hallways of this underground compound do calm her a little. Things will be different here, now that Hank and her sister are fugitives, but when she sees Lucy standing in front of the monitors in full uniform, her unease for the future abates just a little.
"Ah, Supergirl!" Lucy calls out when she catches a glance of the spandex-covered superhero coming in through the main entrance. But after a second look, her mouth turns down in a frown.
As joyous as she may be to see the newly appointed DEO commander, Kara is still holding the weight of the world on her shoulderssoldiers and she's not sure how much longer she'll be able to keep her hold. It must show a little on her face.
"Can you excuse me for a minute?" Lucy says to the officer that she had been talking to prior to Kara's entrance. It's only a second or two later before Lucy is standing before Kara and asking her what is wrong.
"I… uh," Kara feels her lower lip wobble and she doesn't want to cry in front of these people. She thought she'd been done crying days ago, butand no, here she is about to embarrass herself in front of those who are left in the DEO.
"Come here," Lucy doesn't wait for an answer before grabbing Kara's arm and dragging her down another short hallway to the left.
There are a bunch of rooms with people milling around and Kara even catches a suppressed-shocked glance to Major Lane just grabbing a hold of Supergirl's arm so casually; but – Kara thinks – if you've been milling around Supergirl in disguise for so long, you tend to forget about her powers sometimes. She's thinking about how long Lucy knew Kara before she knew who Kara truly is.
"Lu- Major Lane, what-"
"Kara, please," she whispers as they duck into an empty room.
She said it with a twinge of something akin to desperation, but Kara can't figure out why. She just complies with the leader's demands and follows her through the doorframe. It's a weapons room and this isn't the first private conversation Kara has had with someone in here.
"What is going on-" she starts to ask, but it interrupted.
"Talk to me, you look like someone just killed your puppy."
Kara frowns then, imagining a small puppy being killed. Well, now she's upset about that imagery, except not really because she's also thinking about her failed mission and that familiar yet heart-wrenching blanket of guilt, dread, and about a million other things drapes over. She is strong enough to lift buildings but no one will ever know how heavy her own emotions are.
She takes a deep breath and levels Lucy with an even stare; her hands even move to her hips in a reflexive heroic pose. "I'm fine, I don't know what you're talking about."
"Cut the crap, Kara," Lucy deadpans.
"I- huh," she sighs abruptly and drops her arms to hang limply by her sides. She isn't sure why she had decided to try and lie to Lucy when she knew that the intense, militarily trained woman would be able to see right through her. "I just… I had a simple save- well, I would have if things weren't the way they were and it's just so difficult right now-"
"'Simple save'?" Lucy echoes. She takes her hat off and sets it on the counter island in the middle of the room before leaning against it to face the superhero.
"Yeah, a freaking cat caught in a tree!" Kara throws her hands in the air in a pitiful shrug. She still can't really believe that something so simple had gone so badly. "Anyone could do it, my cousin could in his sleep."
"Ka-"
"I know, don't compare myself to him," she grumbles and starts pacing. The room isn't very large, so every time she walks down one way, she puts herself about half a step from where Lucy is still leaning against the counter.
"But it's so hard not to sometimes," Kara continues. "'Specially when I know his city absolutely adores him and will let him rescue a cat caught in a freaking tree!"
She knows she's speaking rather loudly, but her heart is thumping hard in her chest and her chest is heaving with her broken breaths and she feels like if she doesn't stop talking then she doesn't have to focus on the panic that is charging up from her gut and threatening to choke her to death. She hadn't realized just how tonight had affected her until now. God, why had that little girl screamed bloody-freaking-murder when Supergirl rescued her cat?
Kara takes a breath and opens her mouth to continue with her rant, but Lucy cuts her off before she can make a noise.
"Do you think it always did?" she asks, crossing her arms over her chest.
"What?" Kara asks, thoughts elsewhere for a moment.
(the little girl had been crying about not being able to reach her cat and so Supergirl flew down and once she had the terrified feline in her arms, the girl spoked them both with her blood-curing scream that had been completely unnecessary and she took off for her house and hollering about how she doesn't want Supergirl to hurt her, it caused a whole scene that Kara was quick to get away from)
She stops pacing and looks over her shoulder at the other person in the room.
"Superman's city. Do you think it's always loved him?"
Kara just shrugs and resumes her walking. On the next turn, she doesn't look up at Lucy and just watches her feet take one step in front of the other. Left, right, left, right, left, turn…
"Well, it didn't. But it does now, so please do not give up on us."
It's the way she had said us and not it that has Kara's head snapping up as she whips her body around (her cape and skirt billowing out around her before settling back against her body) to meet sharp green eyes alight with something that Kara can't name right now. The alien stops dead in her tracks, feet almost stumbling, while the rest of her body catches up with her head.
"I would never- I uh, I won't give up, I-"
"Kara," the name is whispered.
It just dawns on Kara how close they are standing. She must have stopped right before the woman in front of her when she had turned, and her toes dig into the bottom of her boots as she tries to keep her balance instead of just tipping forward like she wants to.
Where are these feelings coming from? Kara wonders mentally as her breath gets caught in her throat as the two women continue to do or say nothing but stare.
Eventually the silence and weird tension between them – weird only because Kara doesn't understand it – grates enough on the blonde so she does open her mouth to respond.
She's cut off by Lucy's, "don't."
Just that one commanding word has one of the strongest being on the entire planet stopped entirely.
There's another weighted moment before Lucy makes the decision that she's been contemplating almost this entire conversation; something she's been contemplating in general for a long time now, unbeknownst to Kara.
Once the decision is made, it is nothing for her to reach up – her toes straining in her stiff and heavy combat boots – to connect her lips to Kara's.
(woah)
Kara is shocked but not discontented by any means, so she doesn't pull away or do anything to discourage the other woman at all. She does lean forward a little bit more so that there isn't such a big gap between them, and on reflex, her hands come up to cup either side of the shorter one's face.
Their lips stick together at first, Lucy's moist from where she'd licked them before going in and Kara's dry from being caught off guard, but it offers the sweetest friction between their gentle kisses.
Unsure of what else to do, Kara keeps things tender by holding Lucy in place with the soft grasp on her jaw, thumbs running over her cheekbones, and only allowing herself short and sweet presses of their lips for a few moments. When she wants to keep their lips pressed together for longer is when she finally pulls back far enough to open her eyes and look at the other woman's face.
Lucy's eyes are still closed and Kara would be a little confused by it if she wasn't enraptured by the blood blush starting to stain her cheeks, the skin warming up under the superhero's thumbs. Kara thinks that maybe she should say something, but then Lucy's eyes flutter and slowly blink open once only a second or two have gone by since the kiss ended.
"Kara…" Lucy whispers, her eyes bouncing back and forth between Kara's.
"I don't know…" Kara starts, also whispering. She doesn't step away nor does she drop her hands from Lucy's face; the skin on her face is warm and soft and Kara's never really noticed how pretty her eyes are this up-close before. "…what this is," she continues after a pause, "but I do know that I don't want you to want to stop."
Lucy's cheeks pull up in a grin, the muscles in her face shifting under the cool skin of Kara's hands. "Good, because I don't want it to."
