It's times like these where I really wished I was in a horror movie. At least if I was in one I would only need to wait about an hour and a half before I was either brutally murdered or got away safely with the companions that made it past the third act of the story. If the universe has the audacity to kill me after I've been forced to sit in a dirty apartment surrounded by zombies for five days I swear I'm going to gut punch the leader of whatever afterlife I end up in.
People say time slows down in near death situations, but from my perspective time seemed to be speeding up. The infected were scrambling around the inside of the apartment like bees in a hive that has just been suplexed by a bear. It wasn't long before they made it to the door and started pounding on it, judging by the sounds of the infected they really wanted to meet us.
Louis was the first to run at the door to brace it, I followed suit. Together we held them back as much as we could to buy enough time to come up with an escape plan.
"We can't hold them back for long, what the hell do we do?!" I shouted over the snarls coming from behind the door.
Louis grunted as the zombies started pounding the door with even more ferocity. "Maybe the fire escape?!
"We don't have time!" I said as the first hinge on the door flew off, "I don't even think it reaches ground level anyway!
I was so preoccupied with holding the infected back that I almost forgot one of us wasn't contributing.
From my peripheral vision I watched as Bill went back to the planning table and reached into the gun bag. My eyes widened as I saw him pull out a bottle of what looked to be an alcoholic beverage. I watched him with shock as he took a swig of the drink, he then looked at the bottle with disappointment. "What a waste." He said solemnly.
"ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!" I was sure he'd finally given in to his dementia until me and Louis watched him pull out a rag from his back pocket and stuff it into the top of the bottle. Louis was the first to realize what he had planned, he grabbed me by the shoulders and pulled me off the door and towards the table. I was about to protest until I saw him light the rag.
"Holy shit!" Was all me and Louis could say as the door to the roof exploded open and a wall of infected started to pour out. Unfortunately for them Bill had already set down the bottle and had his new shotgun ready to welcome them in. The shot went off right as I kicked the table over to take cover behind it, the blast was so powerful it sent the first wave of infected tumbling down the stairs to be trampled by their buddies, then Bill smiled as he picked up the molotov he created and chucked it down the stairwell with them.
I could see the light from the flames dancing across Bill's face. He turned to me and Louis and shouted, "Well?! We gettin outta here or what?!"
I looked at Louis just to confirm that I wasn't going crazy and Bill didn't just light the building we were standing in on fire, unfortunately his grim face just reaffirmed that fact. I stood and got one of my pistols out. "Come on Louis, let's go kick some ass."
Louis sighed and got up too, apparently I did have a knack for pep talks after all. We rushed over to Bill's side who hadn't moved since he threw the molotov. He was watching the zombies that tried climbing up to us burning alive in the flames, they may have been ravenous but their screams as they felt their flesh peel off were human enough to make me shiver. He was watching as an infected which looked to be a young man no older than a teenager writhed in pain. I grabbed Bill by the shoulder and looked down the stairwell, I realized the fire had already spread too far down there for us to go back inside from here, we were running out of options fast.
I turned to Louis again, "Louis! Where's the ladder we used to climb to the building next door?!"
He hesitantly pointed to the stairwell that was now covered with dead bodies and fire, I saw the ladder propped up to the side of the wall which was now inaccessible. Frustrated, I started yelling at Bill, "What the HELL were you thinking?! Our last shot at getting out just flew by and you get the bright idea to kill us along with the zombies?!" I knew this wasn't the time to be getting angry but I couldn't help it, all this time we've been getting shit from Bill for making stupid calls and here he goes revealing his secret hobby of arson.
Bill looked back at me with a blank stare as he nodded in the direction of the table. I looked past it and my eyes widened as I saw the skylight, we had previously boarded it up due to it being an opening that we couldn't risk the infected getting through. I took action right away and Louis was right by my side as we pulled the wooden planks off the skylight. It was a good thing we couldn't find extra nails to hammer these in or we wouldn't have been able to remove the planks so easily. Louis peered through the broken glass as I went to retrieve Bill who was still watching the fire. "Bill, are you good to go? We got the planks-"
Bill cut me off, "I'm fine kid let's just get outta this damn building, I'd be fine if we never saw this place after today!"
That was all I needed to hear, we made our way to the skylight where Louis was waiting anxiously. "I can see smoke but otherwise I think we can make it, but only if we go now." He said.
I looked down with uncertainty, I knew that when we jumped down there'd be no going back, finding another safe haven like this would be difficult for sure, but it wasn't impossible and that was enough for me. I knew I needed to keep going, too many important people in my life have died due to this damn apocalypse. The memories I had of my loved ones would die with me, so as a tribute to them and a big fuck you to the end of the world I decided I wouldn't give up, and it all started with me going down into this building and finally fighting back.
So the three of us steeled our nerves and jumped into the burning building.
It wasn't the most graceful of landings, but that didn't matter once we were in the building. A quick scan of the room we were in left me with some relief, I'm sure the majority of the zombies were either downstairs greeting the people in the military vehicle or trying to go up to the roof and burning to death as a result.
It's been about a minute and a half since Bill threw the bottle and the smoke was already making it difficult to see, I waved my arms over my face but it hardly helped.
"Stick together and stay low," Bill said quietly. "I'm hoping we can do this quietly, follow my lead." Me and Louis exchanged grim looks, I didn't know if we should be trusting the man who started this fire to call the shots, but he didn't wait for us to reply before he made his way to the door. He opened it cautiously and as soon as he peeked through the opening his eyes widened and he made the 'quiet' sign with his finger.
"How many are there?" I whispered
Bill pulled his baseball bat out of the weapon bag, "I only see one, cover me while I try to kill it quietly."
I didn't know how he expected us to cover him quietly but I nodded in agreement. Bill took a deep breath and opened the door even wider to walk out. Me and Louis stayed close behind him, as we made our way out into the hall we could see the zombie in question. It was hard to describe its behavior, it almost looked frustrated at something. The behavior this infected exhibited resembled that of a rabid animal, it looked like it was trying in vain to bite at something nonexistent above it. I really hoped the people who were infected weren't alive and suffering in a shell of a body, trapped and in pain.
Bill impressed me with the power behind his swing, he was able to take off the thing's head with relative ease. Louis seemed to be impressed as well, he whistled as the monster collapsed like a sack of potatoes. It's head hit the floor and was barely attached to its body by some skin, I half expected the head to growl at me despite it not being attached to its body. Thankfully it looked like these things could be killed like any other human, I didn't have the best aim so that was good to know for the future.
It looked as though the fire had taken care of a majority of the infected who had rushed us, that didn't mean there still weren't a few waiting for us in the lower floors. This fire wasn't going to give us time to wait around for a better opportunity, Bill gave us the all clear and we all made our way downstairs so we could avoid the smoke slowly drifting lower from the ceiling.
As we expected the floor below us had a couple of zombies, unfortunately they weren't as oblivious as the one Bill had thwacked earlier and they spotted us as soon as we peeked through the doorway. There looked to be about two of them coming at us, Bill shoved one back with the end of his bat causing it to fall on its ass, the other rushed at me with surprising speed. It tackled me down and started beating me to a pulp, I struggled and resisted the urge to cry out in pain. I realized I couldn't fight back from the position it had me in, I was about to panic before the zombie was pulled off of me. Bill had used his bat to strangle it while getting it on its feet, with one swift motion he then pulled the bat back and broke its neck. Looking at it made me grab my neck and wince at the sound its neck made as it snapped.
I took a deep breath and got up, "Thanks Bill…" I said to the old man.
"Pull it together kid, there's no room for mistakes from here on out." Bill said coldly.
I glanced at the other zombie Bill had knocked down, Louis was standing over it with blood covering his arms, I guess he had finished it off while Bill was taking care of my problem. I smacked myself in the face, if I didn't get my shit together I'd die before I got out of the building, much less before making it to the hospital.
Bill trudged ahead while keeping an eye out for more zombies on this floor. Louis was standing above the body of the infected he had killed, he was staring at it with a solemn look on his face. As he saw me walk by he looked up, "You doin alright?" He asked me.
"The asshole just left a couple bruises, no big deal." I said to him, "But are you okay? Was it someone you knew or something?" I bit my tongue as I realized how inappropriate the question was in hindsight. Even if the zombie wasn't someone he knew I should know better than to ask stupid questions like that. Louis didn't seem bothered though, he bent down and searched its pockets, eventually he found what he was looking for and pulled out its wallet. He stared at the contents for a bit while I stood nearby in awkward silence.
"Frank Green." He eventually said after a short pause.
I tried to get a read on Louis's expression as he looked through the contents of the wallet, he pulled out his ID and license, and eventually pictures of the man. He looked cheerful in all the pictures Louis pulled out. In one photo the man was fishing with a little blonde girl who I assumed was his daughter, she was holding a fish excitedly while the dad beamed with pride, in another picture the man was out drinking with another person who I assumed was his friend, a tall stocky man with sunglasses.
"He was just like the rest of us." Louis mumbled, "They were all just people... Trying to live happy lives."
I understood his sentiment but couldn't find the right words to respond, instead I just stood there and listened as he continued.
"What would we do if they were people we knew and loved? Do we treat them any different? If we do... does that make us wrong for killing the ones we didn't know? Where do we draw the line?"
He was holding on to his humanity, this whole time I've been pushing those thoughts back by treating this whole thing like just a horror film come to life, but this was real. I really did get where he was coming from, but as his friend I needed to support him however I could, and for now that meant keeping him from being eaten alive.
"Let's keep moving Louis, there's nothing we can do about our situation or his, our top priority should be to keep each other alive right now."
I could tell from the look in his eyes that wasn't what he wanted to hear, but he knew as much as I did there was no time to chat right now.
"Get over here you two!" Bill shouting from the kitchen startled the two of us, I immediately rushed to the sound of his voice thinking there was no reason for him to raise his voice unless he was in trouble. When I got there he was picking up our backpack which we had filled with all the food and supplies we had scavenged from the building. He tossed the bag to me which I clumsily caught.
"Why are you yelling?!" I hissed at him silently, "Are you trying to get us killed old man!?"
"Do you really think I'm that stupid, kid?" Bill replied, "Look down the stairwell, we're in a bit of a predicament here."
I put on the backpack and walked to the stairwell, when I got there I looked at the entrance to the next floor. The way down was completely blocked by bodies and debris, I could see some arms trying to reach us, but no amount of force was clearing this barricade.
"We're trapped." Bill said, he put a hand on my shoulder. "We had a good run kid but we seem to be caught between a rock and a hard place, or in this case a fire and a wall with zombies behind it."
So now he has a sense of humor... Louis had also come up behind us and sighed as he understood the situation. "What do we do now?" He asked. Louis was sounding uncharacteristically negative, it looked like he too was caught up in his own thoughts to contribute for now. Bill looked almost relieved that we were about to meet our untimely doom, he leaned against the wall and lit a cigarette while looking down at the mess in the stairwell.
I wasn't about to give up so easily, our way to safety had just shown itself and was only a couple blocks away from this building. I refused to die now, not after everything we've been through. I decided I'd check the other side of the stairwell for an opening, the zombies had stopped coming through, maybe we could use that to our advantage.
I made my way to the other side of the blockage and it looked like it was the same situation as before, but a plan started forming in my head. "Guys come here for a second." I called from the other side of the debris. I needed to think, maybe if we made enough noise we could get them to break through? It was crazy but it was worth a shot at this point, the building was getting less structurally sound and the smoke was creeping to this floor now, we wouldn't have time for long.
Louis and Bill walked up to me unenthusiastically, I was getting tired of their attitudes at this point."Come on you two can you just get your shit together?!" I exclaimed, "How can you two just give up after all we've been through together?" I knew I wasn't exactly helping by yelling at them, but I couldn't stop myself. "After all the leadership and support you two just shut down at the first big roadblock? That's insane!"
The two men blinked in surprise before coming to their senses. Bill was the first to open his mouth, "Listen kid-" The old man was cut off by the sound of creaking wood, before we could take even a step the floor around us collapsed.
My head was spinning, I must have knocked it against something on the way down. I glanced over my shoulder and saw the two guys who were with me, they didn't seem to appreciate the fall either. If I had to guess the combination of the vehicle crashing into the building along with the several infected tearing themselves apart trying to get to us was making the building unstable. We had landed in the room next to the alley exit which used to be covered with a wall, but by the looks of it the infected seemed to have broken it down in order to get to the military vehicle. Looking down I almost puked, we seemed to have crushed a zombie or two on our way down, maybe they had been drawn by my voice earlier, but that wasn't important.
I was almost afraid to look toward the entrance where the vehicle had crashed, but eventually I did. To my horror the number of infected on this floor made up for the relative lack of encounters on the second floor. There was dead silence. I could almost see the shell shocked expression on Louis's face beside me from my peripheral vision, Bill was somewhere behind me so I couldn't see what his face looked like, but I imagined it was less than thrilled. I was sitting there making eye contact with about a couple dozen infected, with more of them probably gathering at the front of the building. They weren't moving, it reminded me of the time at the hospital when we couldn't start the car, almost like they were waiting for us to make the first move. A second passed and none of us were moving, the expressions on the faces of the infected were a mixture of rage and fear, like they were afraid of us. Louis lifted his arm to get up and almost all eyes tracked his movement, causing Louis to freeze in place.
It had been less than ten seconds, but the tension we felt made it feel like hours.
Suddenly the silence was cut off by the sound of a horn. It sounded like it was coming from the crashed vehicle.
The sudden noise was so loud I could barely hear the sound of Bill telling us to move it. Thankfully me and Louis didn't need to hear it, as soon as the sound rang out the infected looked away for a split second which we took advantage of without hesitation. As soon as we were all on our feet we made a beeline for the door. It didn't take long for the infected to notice our movement either, what looked like a majority of the crowd came barreling in our direction. Louis was the last one out into the alley, he slammed the door behind him and kept running with us.
This was not good, the only way out of the alley was through the street where we gathered supplies. There were a few infected in the alley with us, there was no way we could stop and deal with them quietly so I pulled out my pistol and shot at the ones that got in our way. Surprisingly it went down a lot easier than I thought, I just aimed for the chest and it crumpled in two shots. Louis took note as well, once we got on the street he helped me take down a few that charged us.
The noise from the vehicle hadn't stopped since we started running, almost like someone was leaning on the horn. I looked around for anywhere we could go, but I wasn't familiar with this part of the city. I caught a glimpse of the roof we were on, it looked like a beacon of light which I feared would attract even more infected if we didn't hurry.
"Our best bet is to go underground!" Bill said as we ran away from the roar of the horn, "The subway should be a straight shot to the hospital, and hopefully we won't run into too many of those things down there."
"Good thinking Bill!" Louis chimed in. "There's an entrance to the subway straight ahead!"
I remember the two of them entertaining the idea of using the subway to escape the city back when we were planning on the roof, but it was always ruled out in the end because of how far we needed to travel on foot. Thankfully now that we knew that our chance at safety was just a couple blocks away we could use it as a safe path straight to the hospital.
Just one problem. We had made enough noise to attract at least a small army in our direction, it didn't take long for the group to break the door Louis had closed, now they were rounding the corner and rushing at us with frightening speed.
We made it into the entrance of the subway, but there was no way to close off the infected from following us down here. The stairway was also cut off halfway through by debris, our only option was to go into a maintenance room to our right which was missing a wall and completely exposed.
"Hold your ground." Bill stopped us at the bottom of the stairwell, "We have to hold them off at this choke point."
"We can't, they'll just keep coming Bill." I protested, "If we just keep going-"
I couldn't even finish my sentence, the first wave of infected came barreling down the steps. At this point I understood what Bill meant, we were already feeling winded and they wouldn't stop chasing us as long as nothing got in their way. It was either we stop the ones that were chasing us here or we eventually get overrun.
Bill had his shotgun ready before the infected in front of him could take a swipe at his face. It was at this moment that time slowed down for me. I could see the bodies of the infected turning into mush as their blood soaked Bill, his face filled with rage as he mowed down dozens of infected with each shotgun blast. I looked at Louis next to me, who looked like he was so afraid his fear had come full circle and turned into bravery. He was covering Bill as best he could, firing shots in between Bill's shotgun blasts and trying to keep the infected away from his face. I watched as a head flew over me, the fact that I could track its movement amidst all this chaos confused me, maybe this is what people meant when they said time would slow down for them when they were in a life threatening situation. In all honesty my head just felt foggy, but I came to my senses as soon as I saw the head land next to something, all of a sudden time was moving at full speed again, and I knew exactly what I needed to do.
"Zoey, is something wrong back there?!" Louis must have seen me run off, but I kept going, grabbing the object on the opposite end of the room.
"Keep coming you sons a bitches!" Bill shouted as he painted the walls with blood. "I'll show you who the real monster is!" As I made it by their side I heard the click of Bill's shotgun. He was out of ammo. That didn't stop him from pulling out his bat and moving up the stairs while swinging wildly. It didn't take a genius to know he wouldn't last five seconds trying to bludgeon an army to death with a baseball bat. I stood directly behind him and threw the propane tank I had brought, it took all my strength to toss it over my head like that but the adrenaline I was feeling must have given me just enough strength to throw it near the top of the stairs. Once it hit the ground I pulled my pistol out and shot at it between the feet of the zombies. One shot, two shots, finally the third shot landed!
"Get back!" I shouted to the two men. Bill wasn't listening though, he was wrestling two armfuls of infected at once. Suddenly I took action and grabbed Bill, pulling him back to Louis, who had been standing in confusion nearby. He helped me pull Bill behind a crate of boxes nearby, then we braced ourselves for the explosion. It was delayed for about a second, long enough to fill me with doubt that I had actually hit the thing. While me and Louis continued shooting at the infected in vain, I heard a loud hiss coming from the stairs.
The explosion that followed shook the ceiling above us, causing rubble to fall onto our heads, but that was nothing compared to the rubble that fell on the infected at the subway entrance. Dozens of bodies were buried by the explosion, we could hear many more of them trying to get in, but it was no use.
The pause that followed was so silent I could hear my pulse pounding in my ears. A minute passed as we stared at the wall of rubble that was covered with dust and body parts. Louis looked shocked while Bill leaned against a box panting, clearly we were all pretty shaken up by the fight. "Holy shit Zoey!" Louis finally said, his eyes were the size of dinnerplates at this point. "I really... thought we were dead back there..."
"I'm just glad it's over to be honest." I couldn't help but grin at how well my improvised plan had worked out, but I knew our victory was only temporary. Now that I could get a better view of the maintenance room it looked like a decent place to rest up for a bit, there was one door on the opposite side of the room which looked pretty sturdy.
I pulled out my backpack to check on how much we had in terms of supplies while Louis went to check out the room next to ours. I kept an eye on Bill as I took note of our ammo, food, and water. The old man seemed winded, but also looked a little upset. I noticed these moments more and more as I've been around him longer. While I knew it would be simple to ask him what was bothering him I didn't want to risk making him lose focus, I'd talk to him about it when the time was right, for now I decided it'd be best to let him be. I sat down on a crate near the room Louis was checking out and took a swig of water from one of our bottles, we had used up quite a bit of ammo, we'd need to be careful from this point on, I couldn't imagine fighting another horde without guns.
Louis interrupted my train of thought by coming out of the room next door, "We can access the subway from here, and there's a toilet in there in case you need it too. But we should rest up before we move." Louis gave me a smile and a nod as he walked towards Bill. I didn't know if he was gonna try talking to him, but I was just grateful that he seemed to be getting back into high spirits.
I decided to check out the room for myself while the other two finished catching their breath. Walking in I immediately felt the cold air of the subway and could hear screeches echoing in the distance, that confirmed that we would be running into more than a couple infected while traversing the subway system. I couldn't help but feel creeped out by this room, the door leading to the subway was broken so nothing was stopping zombies from walking in, and the single light hanging from the ceiling was dim enough to make the room look like it was straight out of a nightmare. I couldn't stop myself from shivering, why was I getting so many bad vibes from this room? I kept going and decided I would look into the subway then head back out to the others.
I couldn't see much from where I was standing, the only light came from a crashed police car that I assumed had crashed down here from the stairway, it was what kept us from going down here while the horde chased us. Interestingly the room next to the one I was in was broken down and led to a drop into the subway. It looked like there had been a massacre down there, bodies were littered throughout the ground, I assumed people tried hiding down here before inevitably getting caught with nowhere else to run. I walked up to the edge of the drop and looked down at the bodies, injuries ranged from bruises to claw marks to maiming that rendered the bodies no more than unrecognizable piles of rotting flesh. The smell alone made me recoil in disgust, I decided enough was enough and I walked back to Louis and Bill.
I was greeted by the sound of laughter from the two men, this was the last thing I was expecting to hear from Bill of all people. I walked up to the two of them sitting on the floor chatting like they were old high school buddies. "And then she slapped me, and told me I was too old to be laughing at fart jokes!" Louis said this with tears streaming down his face as he was trying to hold in his laughter.
Bill was holding a bottle of what I presumed to be something alcoholic while he also roared with laughter. "You are an idiot!" He told Louis as he took a swig of the drink. I don't even know where he had been holding that bottle, maybe he found it in the room? I refused to believe that thing was in the gun bag and had survived the earlier fight.
I was debating whether I should yell at them for drinking when we needed to keep moving, ultimately I decided against it, deciding instead to make sure the door to the subway was closed securely. I then rested my backpack on the floor next to me and used it as a pillow, I really needed a nap after today.
I awoke so rested that I almost forgot the world had ended about a week ago, I sat up against the wall and sighed in disappointment as I remembered the things I've seen. This is the way I usually woke up lately, just upset that I wasn't in my dorm in Penn State with my friends and family alive and well. I noticed that Louis was also awake, probably keeping watch while Bill and I slept. He had his gun in his hand as he listened to the sounds of infected crying out in pain. I got up and stretched my arms while letting out a huge yawn. As I walked toward Louis he noticed me from the corner of his eye and smiled warmly. "Good morning sleepyhead." He jokingly said.
"Ugh, how long was I out?" I asked while rubbing my aching neck.
"Just a couple hours," Louis said while he shrugged. "Bill took first watch since he couldn't sleep, now he's out like a light."
I was happy to hear that, in hindsight things could be a lot worse. I could have ended up with the worst of the worst but instead I got some of the most reliable and trustworthy people to watch my back while I slept. I wouldn't last more than a day out there without these two.
Louis noticed my silence and continued talking, "You know, I noticed Bill has a habit of talking in his sleep."
I chuckled at the thought, "He say anything interesting?"
Louis shrugged, "I thought I heard him saying a couple names, but other than that it was too quiet for me to make out."
I scratched my head, "You get the feeling he's hiding something maybe... dark about his past?"
Louis's expression changed at the question, "It's pretty obvious to me, I imagine he's seen things before this apocalypse that would mess anyone up."
"He's almost like a different person when things get heated out there." I observed, "I'm just glad that ferocity is directed at the zombies instead of us."
Louis sighed at the remark, "We've all lost some of what makes us human because of this, but with that guy I feel like his struggle goes a lot farther back than the past week."
I looked down when Louis talked about how we've all lost something. I lifted my arm and almost teared up as I looked at the sleeve of the pink jacket I was wearing.
Louis took note of this and spoke up. "That belong to someone important?"
I lifted my head in surprise when I realized I was staring at my jacket. "Sorry I'm spacing out." Louis didn't stop looking, I realized he wanted me to continue, "This jacket… yeah, someone really important to me let me borrow it, or I guess keep it now." I couldn't hide the sadness in my voice as I said those last few words.
"I won't pry if you don't want to talk about it" He said, "It is a nice looking jacket though, whoever let you borrow it had good taste."
I smiled, he really knew how to lighten the mood, and I will always appreciate him for that. Suddenly a grunt came from the opposite wall, I put my hand on my gun before I realized it was Bill waking up. "Had a nice beauty sleep old man?" I told him as he stood up.
"Shut your damn mouth kid." Bill groaned, "We moving out or what?"
I looked to Louis and he nodded. "Ready as I'll ever be," I said as I pulled out my gun while sighing, "Let's get to that damn hospital."
Shadows danced along the walls as the police car flashed lights down the empty stairwell to the subway, it was almost pitch black down there and we only had two flashlights. We decided it'd be best for Bill to have one of the flashlights since he was the best shot of the three of us, I gave Louis the second one and stayed close to him, if fighting broke out I'd rather not have to rely on Bill for my vision.
Bill inspected the bodies and had a grim look on his face which looked a lot creepier under the low light. "This was no zombie." He remarked, "I don't know what could have done this other than a wild animal."
I got the shivers again, "Something about this place definitely doesn't feel right, it feels almost sinister down here."
We heard a screech in the distance, it sounded far enough away from us, but it didn't stop us from jumping out of our skin. "Maybe w-we shouldn't have trapped ourselves underground with these things." Louis stuttered.
"Quit being a baby and k-keep moving," I said. I was trying to tease him but ended up showing just how nervous I was too.
Bill ignored us and started walking down the steps to the subway, we followed him nervously and tried not to lose him in the darkness. We made our way past the turnstiles and found even more bodies piled up by the stairway leading to the subway cars. When we shined our lights on them we noticed that these corpses were a mix of infected and non infected bodies, they were also covered with more strange claw marks. I saw a glint of light coming from one of the bodies and spotted a scoped rifle under the arm of one of the bodies.
"Careful with that," Bill said, "Those rifles are pretty powerful,"
This time I ignored Bill as I checked it for ammo, it had about four bullets but could hold five in total. I grinned and looked through the scope.
"Let's just keep moving." Bill said in annoyance, Louis chuckled and beckoned for me to follow him since he was holding the light.
I walked up the stairs and found Bill standing at the top of the stairs looking serious, I assumed annoyed. "Listen old man," I told him, "I was just joking around no need to be so hostile."
Bill shushed me and made the signal for us to wait behind him, I was about to speak up again before I noticed the look on his face was more than seriousness. He looked a bit confused, and… was that terror? I also noticed his hand was shaking slightly, did he see something up there? I walked up next to him and paused mid step, now I knew what was going on. I heard it too now, it was faint but it was definitely audible.
I could hear a woman crying.
