Komaru frowned as she looked at Toko, her long purple hair was a mess, it looked matted in places and was just tangled the rest of the way, that could not be healthy for her hair, well maybe she wouldn't mind, "Hey Toko?"
The siren turned to look, her face had a bright red stain on her lips as she held a dead bloody fish in her hands, "W-what?"
"Is it okay if I brush your hair?"
Toko tilted her head in confusion as she wiped the fish off her face, "B-brush my hair? W-why would you want to d-do that?"
"Well it looks pretty tangled, and it probably gets in the way when you swim right? So maybe if I brush it and pull it back, maybe it won't get in the way?"
The mermaid frowned and messed with a strand of hair that hung over her shoulder, she looked uneasy and uncomfortable, but sighed and said, "F-fine, b-but one wrong move, and I-I'll bite off your h-hand!"
Komaru smiled, she had gotten used to these threats over the past couple of days since she learned Toko could talk, they were pretty much empty threats, but it was just how Toko defended herself or made herself feel like she was in control of the situation where she had to give it up, and she obviously has trust issues, but she seems to be doing better with her at least, but with the other scientist around she's completely on guard and glares at them.
The brunet smiled and sat on the edge of the platform, dipping her feet into the salty water, and dug in her bag and pulled out a hairbrush and some hair ties, she motioned for the mermaid to come closer, which she did, and told her to turn around, now there was much more hesitation in this but she did so. "Okay, so I'm going to touch your hair and start brushing okay?"
"Y-yeah, whatever, j-just get it over with!"
Komaru continued to smile as she pulled Toko's wet hair out of the water and started to brush, starting at the ends and slowly making her way up, the mermaid winced a bit at sharp tugs, which Komaru immediately apologized over, but Toko didn't make a fuss.
After what felt like an hour of brushing and untangling hair, Toko now had two long braids that, when out of the water, went past her hips where her flesh met scales. The mermaid pulled one of the braids over her shoulder to take a closer look, her grey eyes squinting.
"I've noticed something."
Toko's eyes slid over to Komaru, "W-what?"
"You seem to squint a lot."
"S-so?"
"Do you have bad eyesight?"
Toko's eyes widen a bit only to look away, "I-it's better underwater, b-but things are still blurry..."
The caretaker frowned, "You probably need glasses."
"G-glasses?"
The brute looked up in thought as she held a finger on her lips in thought, "Yeah, they're glass that sits in front of your eyes, but they make everything more clear, although peoples' eyes have different needs, so it's more like you'd need an appointment, but..."
"I-it doesn't matter..."
"Hm?" Komaru looked back at Toko.
"I-I mean, I-I should be let go of soon, r-right?"
Komaru then felt a pang in her chest, that's right, once the floor scientist was done they would be releasing Toko back into the ocean, she knew she should be happy for her, she could be back where she belongs and back where she would be happy, but she would miss her. They were friends. She gave the mermaid a wobbly smile, "Yeah, but Toko can I ask you something?"
"Y-you just did."
This caused the career to chuckle, "Y-yeah, um, do you think it, after you're back in the ocean, if we could somehow, keep in touch?"
"Y-you want to k-keep contact?"
"Well yeah, you're my friend, and I would hate to lose this, but if you can't I understand."
Toko's eyes looked down at the water as her tail continued to keep her above the waterline, as she gnawed on her short fingernails, only to sigh, "I-I don't know how we'd do it, b-but if you want we can try..."
"Really?!"
"Y-yeah...j-just don't know how we'd do that though..."
Komaru smiled, "We'll figure it out, and thank you Toko."
