'Is it even safe here?' Hope thought for the millionth time as she was in the shower. 'So, why'd you choose this town?' The question from Scott earlier rang in his ear. Her mom had told her that they had moved here because it was on the down-low that nobody really knew of and they would blend in. Now that she thinks of it, going away after they found the body is suspicious, if they didn't seem it was suspicious then this town was too trusting and nothing really did happen here. Or it was like Mystic Falls where they say it was an animal attack, Hope swears if they do say it was an animal attack surely people wouldn't buy that because of the burn marks on them and if they did, what were they doing in this town.
Hope shut off the water and grabbed a towel to wrap around her waist. She stepped out of the shower to put on some comfortable clothes to sleep in. She had just finished drying her hair when the house door opened and she knew it was her mom. She came out of her room to be greeted with a hug.
"Not that I don't mind but what's this about?" Hope asked hugging mom back.
"I've heard what happened at the bonfire, are you ok?" Hayley asked.
"Yes I'm fine, I can't say the same thing about the other two kids," Hope said.
"What exactly happened?" Hayley asked looking at her straight in the eye. "I need to know to see if we are still safe."
"I was talking to someone when we heard a scream coming from the woods, everyone looked towards the woods and I couldn't figure out where it came from as it echoed, the next thing we know, two kids are walking out each half-burned, one passed out and the other looked like they were having a breakdown," Hope said Hayley seemed to only relax a little.
"At least it doesn't appear wasn't a werewolf or vampire. A werewolf can only turn on the full moon, or if they are like us, a vampire would feed first and never leave them alive or clean up their mess. A witch, however," Hayley breathed out. "They would have no reason to attack unless they were provoked. So we are still safe, for now."
"Hopefully things come up clean," Hope agreed. "When aunt Freya calls I'll ask her to help with a cloaking spell."
"So, what were you saying about talking to someone?" Hayley said changing the subject into an entirely new one and one that Hope did not want to talk about right now.
"Someone just got burned and that's what you pay attention to?"
"I am an attentive mother," Hayley said. "I pay attention to the little things. Now, who?"
"Just someone being friendly," Hope said. "Nothing special."
Hayley raised an eyebrow. "Their name?" She asked.
"It was just a boy, someone named Scott McCall." Hope explained to her mother.
"A boy, huh?" Hayley asked smirking.
"He was just being nice to me like a normal person." Hope insisted.
"Ok, whatever you say," Hayley said winking at Hope. "You're lucky I don't do teen drama."
"It's not-" Hope said but Hayley had already sped into the kitchen. "-like that." I Hope finished talking to the air. She speeds downstairs where her mom is that and Hayley turns around. "There's no drama!"
"Right, got it, " Hayley said. "By all means, good job on trying to blend in. But at least talk about it to Rebekah, if she doesn't threaten the boy," She said and turned around for the kitchen. "We're having steak tonight!"
Hope cursed under her breathe, not a hex, of course, she'd never do that to her family. But seriously? Were all moms like this or supernatural moms, or just her mom. And if her mom was like this how would the rest of her family be like? Half would be like her mom since so far she is the only kid. And the other half would be serious, like her dad, please don't let them get the wrong idea. Plus the only drama that would ever happen is if people found out about them not being normal, that wouldn't end well for anyone.
Knowing her mom was just as stubborn as she was, she knew she wouldn't let it go. But she didn't need any friends. She had kept to herself this long into her teenage life and she has been just fine. Fine-ish. The point being is that she could keep herself safe and not need friends.
She could smell the meat already starting to cook. Her mom had learned how to cook and bake during the earlier years of her life when they lived off the grid. She only knew how to bake from all of the chiefs her dad compelled to make her beignets, they were still her favorite pastries to this day and nothing paled in comparison. She had learned to make it when she stumbled into the kitchen where they were making it and she had asked to try, and them being compelled, they obliged. Hope was still very grateful, and she even learned how to make all different kinds of pastries.
Hope waited in her room and came down when dinner was ready. Her mom had outdone herself this time and had even added side dishes.
"So, have they talked to you about back home?" Hope asked. Hayley paused for a second.
"Yes," Hayley said pausing again. "Turns out the reason behind the war was from a vampire Klaus had sired wanting revenge and turned many vampires, some witches had sided with him and the rest are neutral and just protecting their own, regular New Orleans."
"So when can we go back?"
"They are not sure, apparently the vampire doesn't know of you, so we're still safe here."
"Unless they do a tracking spell. So I'll have to ask aunt Freya to help to make sure no one could undo it if we are going to be here longer than expected."
"Good. Remember this is a little town in California, the only major thing that happened was a mountain lion attack years ago and they caught."
"Sound familiar?" Hope asked but sighed. "Alright, fine. I'll see how long I can survive normal high school without blowing stuff up."
"That's my girl," Hayley said and they went back to eating.
The next day they got ready as always. Hope puts on her regular outfits, so does Hayley and she makes sure to put on her bracelet and necklace.
"See you at dinner tonight, don't forget, it's a full moon," Hayley said.
"That means, woods, huh?" Hope asked. Hope was a tribrid, being able to change at will but her vampire side isn't fully activated yet, she has vampire blood running through her blood but she hasn't died so she still can't control it under a full moon.
"Yes it does," Hayley said. Hope opened the car door. "See you back home tonight."
"Bye, mom," Hope said and Hayley drove off. Hope thinks that it's time for her to get a car of her own but right now she's fine with her mom driving her.
She entered the school and went to her locker to get her book for the day. Since it was a full moon tonight her muscles are a bit aching for them to wolf out already. She closed her locker and turned around to see two new faces.
"Hi, I'm Lydia Martin," One girl asked, she was about the same height as Hope and had brighter red hair than her and was dressed in a dress with her hair half up and half down, with red lipstick.
"Hope." She replied.
"I'm Allison Argent," Argent, Hope thought, she only realized it was French, she had studied multiple languages with her family and with the grimoires. Argent, Silver. She thought. "And this is..." The girl Allison trailed off when they looked around for something or someone. "Where's Malia?"
"I think she said something of trying to study," The girl Lydia said.
"Nice to meet you," Hope said before going down the hall. But then she heard the clicking of shoes with heels and turned around.
"Sorry about that, our other friend was supposed to be here too." Allison apologized.
"So, where did you come from?" Lydia asked.
"The south," Hope said giving the same answer as she did with Scott. Blend in, Hope reminded herself her mom had told her so. Act normal. I need to blend in for everyone to think I am a normal high school girl who knows very little about life. "Louisiana to be exact."
"Well, I've been here my entire life, and I've never been outside the state before," Lydia said.
"This is only my second year here, I've moved here from San Francisco when the sophomore year was barely starting," Allison said.
Hope entered her science classroom and took a seat next to an empty spot. When the bell rang she noticed a familiar face. Surprisingly he sent a smile her way and sat down next to her.
"Hey," Scott said.
"Hey," Hope said, she wasn't much of a talker with newer people, especially when there wasn't much to talk about.
"So, where'd-," he was cut off by the teacher coming in and started the lesson.
"Good morning class. Today will be learning how a volcano releases lava when it's ready. Or in other words, you will be doing a project with the person next to you on how different chemicals react to one another to give off an illusion that is simpler to how a volcano would react." The teacher said. Other kids started chatting around them and some getting excited. "Quiet! Now here is a video on different examples." He said and turned on the projected as the video started playing. There was some chatting from behind the classrooms and turns out they also had to build a model of a volcano with different chemicals. After the video was done playing the teacher had said to start discussing what they are going to do with their partners while he was reading a magazine and eating an apple.
"Is this teacher always this lazy?" Hope asked.
"Most of the time," Scott replied. "So, uh, where did you go after the bonfire?"
"Home," Hope said. "My mom had called me back after she heard what happened, almost anything can reach her ears." Hope explained. If she had said she left for no reason then most eyes would be on her. "Did they find out what happened?" Hope asked.
"My mom is a doctor and she was able to explain that the kids had a smoking habit and she guesses that a fire had accidentally started from it and burned them," Scott explained.
"But how did they put off the fire?" Hope asked.
"Their clothes were drenched in water so she guesses they found a stream to put it out," Scott said. That gave Hope some ease knowing it wasn't a supernatural that caused it. But when she gets home she's going to have to Astra project to her aunt Freya to help with a cloaking spell. They can't have any rouge witches find them. "So the project?"
"Mmm? Right." Hope said she hadn't realized she was lost in her though. "We'll need to figure out what chemicals we have to put in and then make the volcano to see if it can hold it."
"Baking soda?"
"That's too simple!" Hope said chuckling. She learned how to do that back home for fun. "I'll figure out which chemicals were going to use. Can we go to your house to start on the project?"
"Sure, I'll see how we can do the volcano."
"Also can you show me where the school library is later?" Hope asked. She was hoping she could get some quiet there away from most people at the school.
"Anything for a friend." He said.
Hope was taken way back by this that she was stunned for a moment. "We're friends?"
Scott looked shy for a second. "I mean you did say we could be."
"Right," Hope remembered last night on the bridge when she accepted his offer. "Friends." She confirmed. She went back to the worksheet in front of them not seeing how his smile got wider, Scott didn't even realize he was smiling. "I'll just have to confirm with my mom where I'm going. Where is your house?"
"Here let me," Scott said and grabbed a pen and paper to write down his address. "After school?"
"That works," Hope said. The bell rang again and Hope picked her stuff and waved bye. The next class she was just thinking about the friends' things. As she said before, in the Salvatore school people feared her, never coming too close. No one had made an effort in trying to be her friend. Maybe it's a good thing they had moved her here on the other side of the country, no one knew anything of her. Maybe Beacon Hills wasn't so bad.
It was lunchtime and she was going to a tree but she passed by a table outside and they waved at her to come over. She was very hesitant but after seeing the faces she relaxed only by a little and went over.
Lydia patted a space next to her for Hope to sit down.
"So how are you liking Beacon Hills so far?" Lydia asked.
"It good so far. Much more quieter from back home," Way quieter. "And the people here are really nice.
"Glad to hear," Allison said.
"Um, are you going to introduce us?" someone from the table said.
"Oh right," Lydia said. "Hope meet the rest of our friends. Stiles," The guys raised his hand as if to say hi, "Isaac," He just waved, "Malia," The girl raised her head from the books that were in front of her that was highlighted in mostly red. "And, he should be here by now."
"Who?"
"Sorry I'm late, I was looking for..." Scott said then looked at her. "Hope." He said and took a seat next to the guy Stiles who if she could recall said that their last teacher was, murdered?
"So you weren't lying saying you meet her first," Allison said.
"Nope," Scott said.
"So where are you from?" Isaac asked.
"Louisiana, before you ask, I moved here cause there is some complication with my family right now so they moved us here," Hope said.
"What complications?" Stiles asked and Isaac hit him on his head. "Ow!"
"You don't have to answer," Scott said.
"No it's ok," Hope said, she didn't want to seem so mysterious that she seems out of place. "My dad upset someone that basically wants war, and my family didn't want me to be used by him in some way, probably to hold me hostage." Hope joked at the last part but even though it could happen.
"Your dad sounds like trouble," Stiles said earning him a nudge from Scott.
"He is to the family," Hope said. And to a lot of other people. Just as she thought that her phone rang. "I have to take this," she said and stood up to take it from a distance just out of an earshot.
"She seems nice right?" Allison asked the rest of the group.
"She seems alright," Malia confirmed. "She smells a bit weird though," Everyone just passed over that comment.
"But why did she choose Beacon Hills?" Stiles asked. "People don't really come here for a vacation."
"Can you stop with your suspicious?" Lydia asked.
"I'm suspicious about everyone!" Stiles exclaimed.
"Hello, aunt Freya," Hope said into her phone.
"Hey, Hope," Freya said from the other side of her phone. "What's new?"
Hayley stopped by the hospital for some blood bags. She was stocking up so she didn't have to keep going back and forth. She parked her car a block away and unlocked it. She sped into the hospital when someone was entering and got in the elevator just as it closed. Luckily the elevator didn't have cameras or hidden cameras. When the elevator door opened on the fourth floor she sped into the blood bag room where they kept it in storage.
She was loading up when she heard a noise coming from the other room. She peaked through the window that was connecting to two rooms and saw one girl half burned. 'That must be one that hope was talking about,' Hayley thought. Then the girl started moving in her sleep mumbling things as if she was having a nightmare. Hayley walked into the room. She put her hand on the girls' forehead to try and calm her down when the girl grabbed her hand with her eyes wide open.
She breathe out one word. "Dragon."
