"Conan. Are you feeling okay? Any pain?" Shizuka asked as soon as they were let into the hospital room, her appearing at Conan's side while Heiji somehow got there before she did and was now cradling Conan close as he checked Conan's vitals. It both warmed her heart and hurt it to see her eldest holding his younger brother like that. Warmed her heart because she had always wanted to give Heiji a younger sibling to love and protect but couldn't. Hurt it because of how her son had to check for his brothers vitals.
"Mmm. Wha-" Conan blinked unfocused eyes at them slowly as he opened his eyes at being manhandled and spoken too. Out of the four of them only Heizo noticed the others hovering at the doorway and slipping into the room quietly. He said nothing about them however.
"They have him on pain medicine. He's probably really out of it." Heizo said after glancing at the IV's and all hooked up to Conan's tiny frame.
"Ran-neechan? She's…" Conan's voice trailed off as he gave a really slow blink and Shizuka nearly cried right there. His first thoughts were of the girl he protected.
"She's safe Conan. You protected her. Geez didn't I tell you to let me put the charm around your neck? It would have protected you." Heiji said and Shizuka briefly wondered what her son was talking about before she saw him take a familiar bag from his pocket and gently drape the chain around Conan's neck.
"Mmm." Conan just gave a small hum like noise as he stayed comfortably in Heiji's arms. The sight of it filled her heart to near bursting. She had always known Heiji would make a good big brother.
"Geez." Heiji said sighing slightly before glancing up at her and then blushing a bit and looking away with a scowl.
"Here…you want to hold him right?" Heiji offered looking awkward and emotionally constipated, something he definitely got from Heizo, as he gently held Conan out for her but was careful not to pull the wires or anything.
"Thank you Heiji." Shizuka said as she stepped over to sit on the edge of the bed, taking Conan into her arms and kissing her eldest sons forehead which had him blushing a bit wider and scowling but not wiping away the kiss. If he was relaxed in Heiji's arms he went absolutely boneless in Shizuka's and she desperately tried not to think about how it might be because no one's ever held him like this before. With a mothers gentle loving touch.
"You scared us there Conan." Shizuka said softly as she cradled the boy as if he were a baby.
"S'rry. Had ta…s've Ran. Dinnit 'ink. Only m'ved." Conan slurred sleepily, and yes probably a bit high on morphine, but they could still understand him easily.
"God you take after Heiji and Heizo. I'm going to turn grey before you turn ten." Shizuka said sighing heavily and glancing at her husband and son, and at least her son had the grace to look sheepish while Heizo didn't react visibly.
"You did good kid. Next time though, don't get yourself hurt." Heizo said gently but proudly, no matter how discreet he tried to be about it, ruffling the boys hair.
"No pr'mise." Conan slurred before his head lolled into Shizuka's chest as he drifted off.
"We should let him sleep. We'll talk to him in the morning, come on." Mouri said guiding his daughter out of the room and Kazuha following behind them with her father. Everyone was exhausted since they all stayed away all night and half of the day while the doctors operated.
"He needs to rest Shizu." Heizo said putting a hand on his wife shoulder and making her look torn. She wanted to leave and let him rest and make up his room at their house but she also didn't want to leave or let him out of her arms.
"Ya stay 'ere Mom. I'll get his room set up back home. Just get some sleep too. Ya been 'wake just as long as us." Heiji said instead as he hugged his mom a bit and patted Conan's head before he started leaving.
"Heiji your charm?" Shizuka asked realizing that her son had left his charm around Conan's neck.
"Let 'im keep it fer a lil while. I got a bad feelin' 'bout takin' it back from 'im right now." Heiji said without turning back and both of his parents tensed. They had known about the nightmare he had the other night of someone being stabbed in the chest…and that nightmare had come true.
"I'll stay here as well then." Heizo said taking the seat beside the bed that was closest to the door just in case.
"Thank you Heizo." Shizuka said as she kicked off her shoes and then laid down on the bed, curling up around Conan protectively while making sure she had a fan in one hand just in case.
They weren't taking any risks with their youngest son. If Heiji had a bad feeling then they'd take it seriously, because they knew how acute his sense for this kind of thing could be. He said he had a bad feeling once about one of Heizo's field assignments, back when he had only been about Conan's age now, and they had brushed it off. They weren't brushing it off anymore after Heizo ended up shot and in the hospital for a few weeks because of that assignment.
When he had been twelve and insisted that they go to a different store than they normally did because he had a bad feeling they had indulged him. The store had a gas leak that exploded because of a nearby smoker and killed the seven people inside of it at the time. The three of them would have been in that store if they hadn't indulged Heiji.
They no longer wrote off his bad feelings as just childish whims or worries, and it was a good thing they didn't since his bad feelings had saved them both at least three or four times each by themselves and six times they were together.
They weren't leaving Conan's side until they found out what caused the bad feeling and neutralized it with heavy prejudice.
They had been very protective of Heiji, in their own ways, when he was a child until he could defend himself well enough with Kendo. Why would they be any different for Conan?
