Chapter 5

For two minutes Murdoch said absolutely nothing. He just made a clairvoyant decision. Get out of there with Julia, Harry and Anna's life locked up. Even if I had to die in that room. That's why he had his hand in his coat pocket squeezing his gun tightly.

-Where is Miss Fulford?

-I don't know.

-He's lying.

-No -the policeman added, shaking his head-. We were wrong.

-Why did you think she was still alive?

Again William decided to shut his mouth as the only answer.

-I don't think you understand... he's not in a position...

-We found in your journal this address. I thought your man got the wrong victim.

-My man...?

-Rhodes.

-I don't know who you're talking about.

-He's lying.

-You will see... I don't really care much about Miss Fulford's life. Stop looking for her.

-My son...

-I want to make a deal with you.

At that moment the detective's brain understood the mobster's intentions. That's why they hadn't taken care of him yet. It was more alive for them.

-This time without lies. I don't want the same thing to happen to me as my father.

-Speak...

-Work for me. It'll be very simple. I ask you for certain favors at specific times. You obey without uncomfortable questions.

-What if I refuse?

-You have a nice wife.

At that instant William slapped at Falcone pushing the wall. Then the mobster's underling hammered his gun.

-Hold it -His boss ordered him to sketch a grotesque smile-. He won't kill me.

-Yes...

-Sit down. It's so simple.

For a few seconds William remained in the same position. His rational brain kept sending him conflicting orders.

-That son of yours is also a good piece.

With the mute countenance Murdoch sat down again trying to reschedule his next steps.

-On one condition.

-Speak.

-Neither Julia nor Harry will be watched by their men. With total freedom of movement. If I accept, you must trust me to do my part of the deal. No tricks.

For a minute Falcone weighed his decision. It wouldn't be hard to find out if the cop became dangerous in the near-term future. He had his own methods of discovering any anomaly.

-All right.

-It's okay. Now let me go back to my son.
