Nestor had been right about it being a while before Jubal would hear from Maggie, they had been two weeks in to her assignment and he still hadn't heard from her. Isobel had been checking in with him and she had told him that it was very common on an undercover assignment as Maggie would be working hard to earn the trust of the men in charge. He understood all of that but that didn't mean it made it any easier for him. He hadn't been sleeping much, Jen had stepped in on day 5 to go and stay with him for the weekend as he was having the kids that weekend and she knew he needed to try and get some rest.
The weekend with the kids had really helped him, he never stopped missing Maggie not for a second but they did make it so much easier. They asked him if they could make her a picture and leave it there for when their dad might be able to see her to at least show her. Jubal was so thankful that Jen had come to stay with them that weekend with Ben, her son joining them as well. He was so thankful to have them all around him but he couldn't stop worrying about Maggie hoping that she was okay.
The team had been handed their first big case since Maggie had left, Jubal was calling out the tasks to the team like always, he looked at OA "OA grab Maggie and go and talk to this guy.."
OA stared at Jubal and raised an eyebrow and Jubal shook his head gently "Right, I forgot Maggie isn't here." He tried to hide the disappoint and pain in his voice.
OA patted his shoulder "I miss not having her around too, it's not the same without her." OA had no idea just how much Jubal was missing her, to him they were all just missing a team mate and friend. "Have you heard from her it's been two weeks?".
Jubal shook his head gently hearing OA "No still nothing, we knew she would be quiet at the start as she has to earn trust where she is. It's not easy, I promise as soon as I hear from her I'll let you know." Jubal couldn't help the small smile that appeared as he realised that OA had been counting the days that Maggie had been gone as well.
"Have you and Isobel been able to sort out a temporary partner for me while Maggie is out?" OA really didn't want a new partner even if it was temporary, there was only one partner he was happy with and that was Maggie.
"We have, I was meant to talk to you about it this morning but then we got this case. She can't be here until tomorrow so today you are going to take Kristen with you, that okay?".
OA smiled glancing at Kristen and back at Jubal "Yeah I'm more than okay with taking Kristen out there with me. We can miss Maggie together" he joked causing Kristen to laugh as well. "Who is the new partner coming in? You had some decision in it right?".
Jubal made a mental note to remind Maggie just how much she was being missed around here and not just by him. He did let out a chuckle hearing OA about him and Kristen missing Maggie together. "I made the decision along with Isobel's help we thought it was better to bring in someone that you all knew so we were glad that she jumped at the opportunity. Seems you all didn't scare her off" he teased playfully "Emily has agreed to come back and work with you until Maggie is back."
"Really? Thank's Jubal I really appreciate that, she knows the team and the way that we work, we all feel comfortable with her. I thought she would be too busy to come back here?"
"Her current assignment finished yesterday, she has to wrap everything up today and then she'll be joining you tomorrow. She was more than happy to join when Isobel made the call."
OA thanked Jubal again as it really did mean a lot to him that they had brought back in Emily as they all knew her. He nodded for Kristen to join him and they both left the JOC heading out. Jubal leaned back against the desk resting his hands on it. Being in the JOC without Maggie really didn't feel the same, this was the first big case without her and it was making it all even harder if that were even possible.
"You know that she will make contact with you as soon as she can"
Jubal turned his head when he heard Ian speaking to him and he smiled a little "I know, this is just the longest we have gone without seeing or talking to each other, even before we started dating."
"You really haven't heard a single word from her? I know that we can't know the details of what she's working on or anything." Ian was talking so that only he and Jubal would hear, anyone else was too far away at their computers right now to hear them.
"Not a single word. I would have told OA that she was safe and had checked in, I won't be able to tell him anything but I will still let you guys know when I hear from her. Those who know keep telling me it's normal while she needs to earn the trust."
"But what's not normal here is that they are talking to an ASAC about his girlfriend not just his undercover agent."
Jubal smiled softly hearing Ian "Exactly. I mean I would be worried about any agent going quiet this long but it's a lot harder when it's…."
"The woman you love and live with"
Jubal nodded and raised an eyebrow looking at Ian "You know for someone who doesn't like talking about relationships you aren't doing too bad."
"For you I'll make the exception, I know you have family to talk to but at work I know it's only me and Isobel that know so if you need to talk just say the word."
"Thank's Ian I really appreciate that, it means a lot" Jubal smiled softly at Ian before getting called over by one of the analysts to check out something that they had found.
It had been a long day for Jubal at work, nothing was going their way on this case, everyone was exhausted. He had finally left the JOC to go home and try to lay down for a couple of hours even if he didn't get any sleep. Sometimes just being in their home, in their bed made him feel a little closer to Maggie as he could still smell her on her pillow. Jubal had stepped in to their apartment walking into the kitchen, he sat his keys into the bowl when he heard a noise coming from upstairs. Jubal took his gun from his holster and made his way slowly up the stairs.
He was listening out as he got closer, being sure not to make any noise, the noise that he could hear was coming from their bedroom. The door wasn't closed over tight, he gently and slowly opened it with his hand, his gun still in his other hand. That was when they came walking out of their en-suite,
"Maggie?"
