Chapter 5
Chloe entered her bedroom and flickered on the bedside lamp. She went to the closet and started searching for something to wear. When she found the clothes she was looking for, she glanced at Lucifer. He was standing in the same spot by the bed, still looking quite lost and uncertain. She could clearly see something else was bothering him.
"Lucifer?" She came nearer and touched his arm.
"Huh?" He snapped out of his thoughts and met her eyes. There was a distant look in them.
"I've found something more comfortable for you to wear." She said handing him one of her over-sized t-shirts she used to wear to sleep. He took it gratefully and a small smile lifted the corners of his mouth.
"I'll be right back." She stated, took her pajamas and headed to the bathroom.
She came back after ten minutes and noticed that Lucifer was already lying in bed. His faraway look was still on, indicating that he was deeply in thought.
She didn't want to pry but she felt that talking could really do him good. She knew that keeping to oneself is always an awful idea. She went to the other side of the bed and quietly slid into it. She lay on her side so that she was facing him.
"Lucifer?" She started.
"Yes?" He turned his head in her direction.
"I know there's more to it. What didn't you tell me?" Her eyes narrowed the same way they did when she interrogated a suspect.
"Nothing can hide from you, huh?" He chuckled still amazed at his Detective.
"I guess so." She shook her head, looking quite stern and determined.
He knew he stood no chance with her and he gave in. "All right then. When I was talking to Dad, he told me something I have never expected to hear from him. He told me that he…" Lucifer hesitated and swallowed hard. "He loved me and that he was proud of me, of what kind of man I became."
"Wow," Chloe pondered a bit, "but considering your relationship with him, I guess deep down you wanted to hear these words, even though you thought you didn't deserve them but you do." She wanted to comfort him with all her might. "Lucifer, you're amazing and don't you ever think otherwise."
Tears shone in his eyes and the mighty King of Hell looked broken. She grabbed his hand and squeezed it gently. This gesture of comfort meant more to him than any words.
"Thank you, darling." He said in a whisper. The smile appeared and warmed his eyes.
"You're welcome." She smiled back. "And now enough with talking. Try and get some sleep." She said. She wanted to turn around and reach the lamp but Lucifer halted her.
"Wait! There's one more thing."
"What is it?" Chloe was curious as to what other information Lucifer wanted to reveal. With the whole celestial situation, it could be anything but what she heard, took her completely by surprise.
"Dad decided to make up for the lost time and wants his children to join him for a family dinner – tomorrow at six at Amenadiel and Linda's house. And I would really like you to accompany me there." There, he finally said it. It gnawed at him all this time, almost just as much as their unfinished conversation in the evidence room. He waited impatiently for her reaction. This time he wasn't so certain about her answer, he knew it was a lot for the Detective to cope with.
Heavy silence fell over the room. Maybe he made a mistake with asking her to do that. And just as he started to tell her to forget about it, she spoke up faintly, her voice betraying how insecure she was.
"Lucifer, you want me to come to a family dinner with your Dad but I don't think I should, I'm not…" She didn't finish her sentence and dropped her gaze.
He realized what she was talking about immediately. "Yes, you are. You became a part of my life and thus my family a long time ago. You have every right to be there." He said that gently stroking her cheek.
A little shy grin graced her lips turning into a broad smile in the end. "Okay, I'll go with you to God's family dinner, as weird as it may sound." She stated, giving him an eye roll. Chloe knew how much it meant to him. He'd surely feel much calmer and comfortable with her by his side.
"Thank you, I really appreciate it." Lucifer could finally let out the breath he didn't even know he was holding. He was so lucky to have her in his life.
"Now, is that everything you wanted to tell me or are you planning on surprising me with anything else?" Chloe asked him, just in case there was more celestial news.
"Oh, now that you've mentioned this, I forgot to tell you that I've got quite a lot of siblings, thousands of them actually... oh, yes and my dad chose a peculiar form for everyone here on Earth to perceive him – he looks like Morgan Freeman."
Chloe was stunned. "What? You're kidding me, right?" Her eyes grew big. In her mind she could see a crowd of angels flooding the house and Linda trying to fit in every celestial being behind the table.
There was a moment's silence before Lucifer replied. "Of course, I'm just teasing you."
She breathed a sigh of relief. However, he added quickly. "There won't be so many of them but the second part was true."
"God looks like Morgan Freeman? Hilarious." That was too much for her. She gave him an eye roll and with that she finally reached out and turned off the light indicating that's the end of the conversation.
She settled back in the bed. For a long moment, she was observing him in the dimmed light coming from the window. She noticed the stress and heavy burden, he experienced lately, taking its toll on him. His eyelids started to close, she could tell he tried to stay awake but he was apparently fighting a lost battle and he was soon fast asleep.
Unfortunately, Chloe's mind was racing so fast that she couldn't fall asleep even though she tried hard. Everything that had happened to her and all the things she had learned in the last few days, was making her head spin around. It was too much for one person.
She didn't know how long she was like this but suddenly, she heard a faint noise on the stairs and light footsteps getting closer. Normally, she would have reached for her gun but she recognized them instantly. The door opened slowly and the person standing there was no other than Trixie, holding her favorite blanket in her hand and rubbing her eyes. Chloe raised herself from the bed, a bit alarmed by her daughter's behavior.
"Trixie, what is it?" She asked her.
"Mommy, I had a bad dream and I woke up. You were there in it and..." She didn't finish the description as her eyes found a weird shape in her mother's bed. It was quite dark in the room so she squinted her eyes and came closer. Now she was sure it was a person and it became more and more familiar. Chloe observed her daughter when the realization finally hit her.
"Lucifer!" Trixie exclaimed, happily clapping her hands.
"Shh, Trixie keep your voice down," she hissed, "he's asleep and he had to deal with a lot today. He needs rest." She spoke softly.
"Okay." Trixie whispered. She seemed quite shaken and uneasy. Chloe knew that on the one hand she should go and try to put her back to sleep but on the other she didn't want to leave Lucifer alone.
"Monkey, are you all right? Do you want to stay here?" She decided that would be the best option for both of them.
Trixie's face immediately lit up. "Of course, I do." She said a little too loud. Chloe threw her a condescending look.
"Sorry." She said under her breath.
Chloe started to move towards Lucifer to make her daughter a place on her other side but Trixie was faster. She chose the middle of the bed, exactly between both of them and she climbed there. She stayed on the duvet and covered herself with her blanket. Chloe chuckled to herself and hugged her daughter tightly. She stroked her hair lovingly and kissed her on the forehead.
"Monkey, do you want to talk about your dream?" Chloe asked her in a whisper.
At first, there wasn't any answer and she was afraid that she shouldn't have said it. "You don't have to if you don't want to." She added quickly.
"No, mommy. It's okay. I want to tell you but it's hard." She looked at her mother mustering her courage to relive her nightmare once again. "You were at home and someone sneaked in here and grabbed you from behind. You tried to fight him but he was stronger than you."
Chloe drew in a breath. With each word it became more and more familiar to her.
Trixie continued. "This man took you to an abandoned place so that no one could find you. It was strange but I felt your fear and desperation to get out of there. Then you heard someone coming and braced yourself for it. And at that moment, I was so scared that I woke up."
"Wow, what a dream." Chloe didn't know what else to say, she was so shocked hearing it.
"Yeah but don't worry mommy, it was just a bad dream. And you know what? If I hadn't woken up and dreamed on, I'm sure Lucifer would have saved you." She said deeply convinced.
Chloe smiled at her daughter. You have no idea how right you are, she thought to herself and looked at Lucifer. He seemed so peaceful and relaxed breathing deeply, his chest rising and falling rhythmically. She realized that she couldn't do anything to protect him from today's events but at least she could support him at this family dinner. She had a feeling he will need it. It's going to be a hell of a day, she thought. But together they will make it through.
She glanced at Trixie and noticed she had already fallen asleep. She closed her eyes too and let light sleep overtake her.
Sometime later Lucifer stirred and his eyelids fluttered open. It was still quite dark in the room and he couldn't see much. He wondered what was it that had woken him up. He was lying on his back and he felt something by his left side. He turned and the person he saw there really surprised him. Somehow during the night Trixie shifted from staying in her mother's arms to snuggling into Lucifer's side.
At first he felt uneasy and strange. He still wasn't used to interact with children, although visiting Charlie and the time he spent with the Detective and Trixie was making him visibly change his attitude in this matter.
Chloe was observing his reaction under half-closed eyelids. She saw the initial shock and hesitation but then his expression changed into tenderness and softness.
"What is it with you, Decker girls, that you keep clinging to me?" He asked quietly, not really expecting any answer.
At this moment, Chloe felt she had to stop pretending she was asleep. "Maybe because we both love you so much." He heard her murmur softly.
Startled, he turned his head to see where the sound had come from. She was staring at him and a small smile graced her lips. Her eyes reflected all her emotions – from amusement, through happiness and gratitude to most of all pure love.
He grinned at her. She was truly amazing, it was still hard for him to believe such a wonderful woman wanted to be with him.
"I love you and Trixie, too. I would do anything for both of you." He said, his voice cracking a bit.
Chloe knew he meant every word he said. "I know."
"Is she all right?" He motioned at her daughter's sleeping form.
"Yes, she had a bad dream so she came here." A very realistic dream, she thought to herself. However, she didn't want to go into further details now that Trixie was with them.
"When she recognized you, she was so happy that she had almost woken you up and I had to hush her." She smiled at mentioning this.
"I wouldn't mind, though." Lucifer said.
"I know but you needed rest and you still do. So now close your eyes and try to go back to sleep." She stated this in a voice that invited no argument.
"Yes, ma'am. Whatever you desire." He winked at her.
She rolled her eyes at his wry comment and outstretched her hand. He took it and gave it a small squeeze. Then he started to rub his thumb making small circles on her hand. His touch had a soothing effect on Chloe. Her whole body slowly became heavy and her eyelids drooped. She felt like she was floating in the air. She was so calm and finally let sleep take her over.
Lucifer studied her intently. He observed how Chloe's face became more relaxed and sleepy with his every small touch. He knew that she needed a good night's sleep as well as him to face this day.
He still found it hard to believe that during these couple of days they almost lost each other. It shouldn't be like this, especially now that they had finally opened up to one another and admitted their feelings, despite his futile attempts at protecting her from himself for so long. He vowed to himself that he would move heaven and earth to finally be with her and he won't screw up this time.
"I promise, I'll fight for us." He swore solemnly and he meant to keep it no matter what would happen.
With that his eyes started to close and he finally fell into deep and peaceful sleep.
It's hard to believe but initially I thought this would be the last chapter. But as I started writing and then got Trixie involved, it just didn't feel right to end it here. So, the story is growing bigger with each day as I try to keep up with writing down the ideas racing through my mind.
So what do you think about this part? Please, let me know. More chapters next week.
