Song: Are You Bored Yet?
Artist: Wallows (feat. Clairo)
Summary: They know that Luz will have to go back home eventually.
It wasn't like Luz wasn't aware of the looming idea that one day, some day soon, she would have to return to the human world. And it wasn't like she kept dodging the conversation whenever someone even breathed a word about her home world.
Okay, maybe she did. But who could blame her?
The more questions that were asked about human culture, the more her friends wanted to know about her kind and her life back home... the more it pained her in her heart that the inevitable would catch up to her. The idea of returning home leered in the back of her mind.
Don't get her wrong. She missed her mom, one hundred percent. And she missed her home - to an extent. She missed it in the sense of, that's where she came from and what she's used to so of course there would be some sentiment for it. But... other than that, she didn't really figure anything else to miss. She'd expressed it to her friends here in the Boiling Isles all the time - she never really fit in back home. She didn't really have friends, just acquaintances and that was simply due to school and the convenience of seeing the same people every day. And the same went for her after school clubs and activities.
They all knew her, but they didn't get her.
And it wasn't like she had a very successful love life in the human world, either. She had no partner she had to get back to or see or miss.
But here in the Boiling Isles, she had friends aplenty and the potential for something to blossom romantically with a particular green-haired witch. Her life was exciting and new and challenging in a fun way here. Compared to home which was just...
Thinking inside the box.
Luz was never a fan of conforming to a society that would never properly give her the time of day.
And she knew these troubles and fears were plaguing her so much that it was becoming increasingly harder to hide from her friends. Especially Willow, Gus, and Amity.
She remembers one particular day when they took a trip to the knee to hang out for a while after school, and she had been sitting rather silent which was uncharacteristic for her. Her eyes were glued to the sun as it descended behind the skull of the Titan. She remembered weighing the differences between a sunset back home and the sunset here. How the sun on earth dipped into the ocean at the beach and the reflection danced on the waves, while here, at the angle she was sitting at, the light seemed to caress the top of the skull.
"Luz?" Willow said, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "You okay?"
Luz turned her head to look at her, Amity and Gus in the background with worrying expressions that matched Willow's. She tensed her jaw and forced her signature smile that she knew didn't reach her eyes.
"Of course I am, why wouldn't I be?"
Willow glanced back to Amity and Gus. Naturally, they were just as unconvinced as she was.
"Well... you've been awfully quiet since we got here." Gus said. He took a timid step forward.
"Does it have to do with Boscha insulting your skills as a witch during Potions class?" Amity spoke up. "Because you know she's full of it-"
"I'm fine." Luz interrupted. "Boscha didn't bother me. I know she's just being a jerk." She turned her attention back to the sunset.
The three friends shared another look, their mouths turned in slight frowns but they decided to drop it. Pressuring Luz wouldn't get them far. They understood that and respected her boundaries. After a while, Willow and Gus had taken their leave. But Amity remained.
The witch approached Luz and took a seat beside her.
"What are you thinking about?" she asked gently, keeping her eyes on the town below.
Luz shrugged. "How different but similar the sunset is from the one on earth." she answered.
Amity chuckled. "Which one do you prefer?"
"Bit of a toss-up." Luz said, unable to resist a small smile at the sound of Amity's laugh. "The one back home is one I've seen all the time, so it's nostalgic to me. But this one is new, and I'll only get to see a handful of them..."
Amity picked her gaze up from the town to look at the Latina. "Luz?"
"Yeah?"
"... Do you think you're gonna get bored of us?"
Luz met Amity's eyes. "What?"
Amity shuffled her sitting position to properly face Luz. "I know you've been thinking about when you have to go home... I can tell by your reactions every time you're asked about it, and I guess I thought that you were starting to feel out of place. Lonely, even." She admitted. "And I'm sure the charm and wonder of this world has started to wear off-"
"Amity, I could never grow bored of this place." Luz followed suit and changed her sitting position. "Sure it doesn't have the same effect as when I first arrived, but that doesn't mean I'm tired of it either. It's not every day I would get to wake up to the sound of Hooty greeting every single bug he comes across trying to tell them about the dreams he had back on earth." The duo laughed at that, and Luz continued. "I'm not itching to get home. But... I do miss it. And if I'm being honest, it gives me a bit of anxiety."
"Why?" Amity asked.
"Because I love it here. I truly do. But this isn't my real home. And I love my mom, I miss her. But I don't have anything to return to, really. So sometimes, earth doesn't feel like home either." Luz pulled her knees up and wrapped her arms around them. "It's a conflict of interest. Here, I have you guys. I get to learn magic. I get to go on exciting and dangerous adventures. At home, I have my mom. I have normal human food. There are people like me, but aren't like me at the same time. Everything makes sense there. For the most part, anyway."
"Are you afraid of what could happen when you have to go home?" Amity said.
Luz was silent for a moment, then finally shrugged. "I don't know. I guess? I know I'm afraid of telling my mom how I spent my summer. And... I know I'm worried about if I'll ever get to see you all again. I wouldn't want to leave here at the risk of that happening... I would think about you guys all the time."
Amity reached a hand out to place on Luz's shoulder. "Sounds like I wouldn't have to worry about you forgetting us, then."
"Of course not!" Luz exclaimed. "I could never forget you guys! But..." Her eyes casted down. "Maybe you guys would forget me."
"Are you kidding?" Amity scoffed playfully. "How could I ever forget the girl that embarrassed me twice in the span of two weeks, then increasingly became one of my closest friends in just as long?"
A smile touched Luz's lips and she looked up at Amity. "And how could I ever forget about the girl that almost got me dissected over a badge?"
Amity shoved her jokingly and the other girl erupted into a fit of laughter. "Oh, come on! Just let me live it down already!"
"Never!" Luz continued to laugh, which made Amity do the same.
As their laughter softened, their eyes found the sunset again. They sat closer together and reveled in the much calmer silence between them before Amity spoke again.
"Well, whatever happens Luz, I'm glad I met you. And I know everyone else is, too."
Now, Luz's smile reached her eyes. "I'm glad I met you all, too."
The memory had brought some ease to Luz's heart, and it helped her feel a bit lighter about her place in the Boiling Isles and her friends' lives. That didn't mean the fear was completely gone, it still reared its ugly head every chance it got to remind her.
But at least she knew for sure just how much she was appreciated and wanted here.
Side note, I'd like to think that at the end of the series Eda will give Luz her own key to visit them whenever she wants. Like Scary Godmother and Hannah.
