A/N: Slight edit (13 April 2021) to chapter 4 opening the possibility of Raven's new memories being temporary and removing the suggestion that Raven could consider Beastboy an imposter.
Matron Logan
Beastboy's entire body went stiff as the words rolled off Raven's lips. He vaguely registered Cyborg's finger on his arm keeping him sitting upright as the overload of thoughts, emotions, and pictures associated with that simple phrase caused a brain crash. Upon reboot his mind demanded confirmation of the previous data input, resulting in a suave, "W-what?" as Beastboy's face danced between pale lime and dark olive.
"It's getting late." Raven said, gently taking his hand and tugging him off the couch. Mento took a breath to speak but broke off to engage in a verbose argument of glares with his wife. Starfire was bumping the ceiling while trying to suppress her squeals as Cyborg, Robotman, and Negativeman snickered in the background. Which left Robin.
"Actually, Raven, we really need to talk to you."
"Can't it wait 'til morning?" Raven asked in a quiet, gravelly voice that almost made Robin back down.
"Um, not really?"
"Fine." Raven sighed, turning back to the group without releasing Beastboy's hand. "What?"
"Well, it's about your memories." Robin began.
"My memories are fine." Raven interjected with a glare.
"But, they aren't the same as ours." Robin decided the diplomatic approach would be best. "We just want to... take things easy until we figure it all out."
"Perfect. Gar and I will go 'take it easy' in our room."
"I meant," Robin bristled, "That since none of us remember you and Beastboy being a couple, let alone married, that maybe he should sleep in his own room tonight." So much for the diplomatic approach, Robin cringed even as the words left his mouth.
"Gar doesn't need your input on where he sleeps, Robin."
Robin was still working on how to salvage the situation when Raven turned on her heel and pulled Beastboy from the room.
Regaining thought only plunged Beastboy into a raging moral argument between the part of himself that desperately wanted to let Raven drag him away and have her way with him – she thought they were married, after all, and he definitely didn't mind going along with that – and the part of him insisting that since Raven wouldn't so much as hold hands with him yesterday, letting anything more than that happen today – when she had been bombarded with memories that weren't hers, seen herself die, taken responsibility for a baby that was both hers yet not, and learned that said baby was most likely in danger from Slade – would be reprehensible.
The sound of the bedroom door closing behind them broke his internal dispute as the weight of how badly he was considering betraying her settled around him. He planted his feet against her firm guidance, forcing down his own desire and focusing on what Raven would think of him if she woke up tomorrow with her memory back to how it should be.
"Raven, we need to talk." Beastboy said, his head hanging.
"We can talk in the morning." Raven said abruptly, tugging more forcefully on his hand without looking at him.
"This is your room, not mine."
"Of course it's yours, we're married, sharing a room is part of the deal."
"Then where are my clothes? My comics, my games, do I even have a toothbrush in bathroom?"
"It doesn't matter!" Raven interrupted, tugging at him again.
"We're not really married Raven."
She finally stopped pulling at him, her arms going slack and head drooping.
"Are you going to leave me?" Raven's voice cracked when she finally looked up at him. "Just because your stuff isn't here? We have a baby. You told me I'm not alone."
"You aren't alone, Raven. I won't leave you, either of you. But if we dive into this and you wake up in the morning with only the memories you should have, it'll hurt you."
"You promise you won't leave?"
Beastboy had never heard Raven sound so vulnerable, even when facing her father all those years ago. He swallowed hard, gingerly running a hand over her jaw to cup the back of her head. "I promise, Rae." He said, searing the words into her with his gaze. He felt the tension in her body ease as they stood staring at each other, until finally a small smile graced her lips as they formed a quiet, "Okay." She stepped forward, slipping her arms around him and briefly laying her head against his chest before releasing him with a squeeze.
"Why don't you get ready for bed," Beastboy said as he let his hands fall from her shoulders. "I'll leave my door open so if you need anything, just shout, okay?"
Raven nodded, brushing her hair from her face before looking up at him again.
"Goodnight, Raven."
"Goodnight."
Raven hesitantly stepped away from Beastboy as he stood watching from the doorway. Only when she turned around did she hear him moving off down the hallway. She stopped and lay a hand on her dresser, breathing deep in an effort to still her roiling thoughts. Breathe in, you're not alone, breathe out, he won't leave you. When she felt steady enough she pulled open a drawer and retrieved her mirror.
According to her memories she hadn't needed to enter her mindscape to deal with her insecurities for over a year. That she felt the need to now was one more indication that her friends were right; that all the memories of the last two years since her alternate self visited were not her own. She drowned that thought before it could fully surface; the hallucination Slade had planted of Beastboy dying was more than enough to cause her anxiety to breach the calm of the last year.
She turned to settle on the bed with her mirror, but seeing it empty reminded her Beastboy wasn't there to listen for Rita. Swallowing thickly she gazed at her daughter; her plump lips twitching, her violet fuzz, her pointed ears. Squaring her shoulders Raven brushed aside the ripples of fear and strode into the hallway with her chin up. Whatever the others said, she knew Beastboy was hers.
Beastboy was just about to climb into bed for the second time that night – fully clothed this time with his door open as promised – when he heard light footsteps in the hall.
"Gar," Raven began as she walked into the room. "I need to enter my mindscape, could you stay in our room with Rita until I'm back?"
"Um, s-sure, Rae, no problem." Beastboy answered, hoping the effects of Raven being in his room while still calling her room their room wasn't showing on his face. Until he realized he'd just agreed to stay in her room. He now had no doubt the blush was showing and no idea how he had gotten himself into the same mess he had just gotten out of not 5 minutes prior. No, he could fix this, no problem.
"Uh, why don't we just switch rooms for the night? I'll take care of Rita, I'd love some more time with her, my mom and Starfire have been hogging her all evening." Smooth, Beastboy, crises averted.
"How about we just switch for now and see how long it takes?" Raven replied, smiling softly as she settled on his bed.
"Oh, uh, yeah, sounds good." Beastboy stammered, bumping into the door jamb as he attempt to back out of the room, blush now in full rage. "I'll see you later."
As soon as he was out of sight Beastboy dashed into Raven's room, sinking against the wall with a sigh of relief, until he registered the sight before him. Frantically minimizing that tab in his mind he walked over to the crib at the foot of the bed. He couldn't help but smile at the little girl before him, his little girl. A thrill shot through him at that thought, but somehow it brought a comforting calm along with it.
