The Avatars Wings

Book I: Light

Chapter IV: Among the Shadows

The Changix Club peels potatoes and stirs sop. The group is hard at work cooking, for kitchen duty. The kitchen is large with several ovens and sinks.

"Honestly for a school for fairies, we don't do a whole lot of magic," Korra mumbles. She finishes with one potato and throws them in the water pot. "I mean, what's the point of doing basic chores?"

Amy mixes the soup and takes a small taste. She hums and adds more salt. "Well, Korra does have a point. I always thought that in Alfea we would do, well, magical stuff." She wiggles her hand using some of her magic for emphasis.

"I heard the upperclassman get to use their magic more," Kaiyo responds, crossing her arms. "I mean, they get to do training and so much more." She grumbles a little.

"My hands are aching," Wan complains, picking up the dirty dishes and placing them in the hot soapy water. "Couldn't the dorm next to us do the work?"

"When I graduate, I am never eating at home, I'm just going to eat out." Logan sighs, still peeling potatoes.

"Aye LOGAN!" Korra splashes water in his face. At first, Logan has a stern face but he gives a soft chuckle and freezes Korra's feet with a spell.

"Hey!"

"No splashing oh mighty Avatar." Logan laughs. "Oh come on, I was just trying to lighten the mood."

Logan's eyebrows arch, and Korra crosses her arms. "Sorry, Logan."

Logan grins as he undoes the spell and Korra returns the grin. "You're not all that bad, Logan."

Kaiyo blushes a little watching Logan. "Yeah, he isn't," she whispers to herself.

Wan sniffs a little then lets out a small cough, "Something is burning."

Hoku gasps as she realizes the pie that she was working on has been in the oven for too long. She runs over, grabs mittens, and opens the oven. The smoke bombards Hoku's noise, and she coughs too. She pulls out the burnt pie and places it down. She groans. "I can't believe I let it bake that long!"

Wan looks over, seeing the black crust of the peach pie.

"It's not that bad," Wan says kindly.

"Wan, why are you lying?" Kaiyo responds, annoyed, looking at the pie as well. "Look at it." Her hand points at the pie. "Like, it looks…"

"Like what?" Wan answers back with a sarcastic tone.

Hoku blushes sheepishly, "Guys, it's not that serious, I know the pie is burnt." She waves her hands. "I'll just make a new one."

A punchy man enters the kitchen, opening both doors, wearing white chef hat and that. "Now let's see how you teenagers are doing." His voice is thick with an Italian accent.

He looks at the potatoes Korra and Logan are pilling. "Too thick, peel the skin more." Korra pokes her lips out, pouting.

The big man looks at Hoku's pie. She giggles nervously rubbing her back. "What is this? It's completely burnt!"

"Sorry, sir, I'll make another one, I lost track of time."

"I see that. Use a timer next time. Overall, keep working on it."

The Changix club sighs deeply as they continue doing their chores. Afterward, the gang goes into their dorms. Korra slumps on the sofa, laying her arms out.

Hoku opens the windows, getting her constellation journal and her telescope out. Wan goes into the boys' side of the dorm, using his magic to hold a book in mid-air and other materials as well.

Amy begins catching up on some homework for the evening, while Logan (who is already caught up) helps Amy out a little. Korra, after some rest, begins to work on her assignments. Kaiyo sees what Hoku is doing and sits next to her.

"Aren't the stars beautiful?" says Hoku.

Kaiyo looks up to see the sky above them full of little milk drops, shining on a dark night. "Yeah."

"The constellations are different than on Konuis."

"Do you miss it?"

"Yeah, I do. I miss my father most of all. He taught me everything about astrology. My mom, she always had such a big heart."

"The only mother I ever knew is actually my stepmom," Kaiyo says, shrugging and still looking at the stars. "My Biological mom died after I was born."

"Oh, I'm so sorry."

Kaiyo smiles, waving her off. "Don't be. My Mom, well the one that is alive, she's amazing. She and my dad have been married for a while. It's kinda nice. Though Wan does have a few memories of our birth mother He misses her a lot."

"You know, there is a Konuis legend on where the dead become a newly formed star and give off light and warmth. To be made new again."

"That's a sweet legend."

The princess nods softly, as she peers in her telescope. Kaiyo sighs. "Can I tell you something, Hoku?"

"Yeah, of course, we're friends."

"I'm a bit jealous of my brother," Kaiyo admits.

"I can see why. Your brother is the Avatar, master of both bending and Magic. Basically the most powerful being."

"Yeah, but, I feel like, I have nothing to show for." Kaiyo throws her hands out. "I'm just a regular old fairy, nothing special."

"Well, I think you're special," Hoku responds."You're sweet, a little aggressive but overall passionate. I believe you have a power you just haven't unlocked yet. That's why we're here right? To find our own greatness."

"Wow, I never thought of it like that." Kaiyo looks over to her left side. "We have an old saying: don't be like the one you envy, be yourself. Yourself is greater than you would dream of." Hoku smiles, rubbing Kaiyo's shoulder.

Kaiyo remained silent thinking about that quote. Hoku yawns "As much as I would love to stay up, we have class." She packs her telescope up and closes her book. "I'll see you in the morning."

"Night," Kaiyo says, still staring at the stars above her while on the balcony.

"Alright, one more time together," Professor Wizgiz, the leprechaun announces to the class, standing up. The desks are aligned in rows of 7, and the classroom has a large blackboard and open windows. "Say it with me now, Vanish pumpkin!"

"Vanish pumpkin!" the students repeat, and their pumpkin heads turn into their normal selves.

Wan's head turns back to normal, and he chuckles. "That was kinda fun."

The bell rings and the students go to their classes or break. Wan mainly goes to the library on his breaks. "Hey, Miss. Barbatea!" Wan calls out loudly.

The woman turns. "Oh goodness! Wan, good to see you."

Wan puts his books down. "Here are some of my books returned ma'am."

"So how were the books?"

"I personally like the Book of Slarius. The pacing was actually good."

"I knew you would love it."

Korra and Kaiyo yawn in Alchemy as Professor Alma writes down on the blackboard on what is needed. She glances to see a bored Korra. "Korra."

"Yes, ma'am?"

"Can you tell me the first rule of alchemy?" she says pacing around.

"Ugh, I don't know?"

The class gigges softly, and the professor sighs deeply. "To obtain, something of equal value must be lost." She explains, "In the rules of alchemy, something must be lost to be gained."

Korra blushes a little out of embarrassment. However, a particular student with blond hair and red eyes glares. "She's an idiot," she mumbles.

The girl walks among the large and vibrant hallways of Alfea, blending in almost perfectly with the students. She scoffs in disgust at all these fairies, talking and laughing. She only has one goal, to confirm these dual avatars as quickly as she can.

She watches Korra closely to see if she would display some of her power. So far nothing has shown. She groans in annoyance.

Raelynn needed more information, and she got it. A passing by conversation, small talk between the princess and the little fairy she fought. It was enough to make the witch of the black sun gleeful. She smirks hearing the name, Avatar and Wan in the same sentence.

And if her intuition is correct, Korra is an Avatar too.

Bingo.

Back in cloud tower, the school of witches, gloomy and up top a large peak. A dark purple tower with spires all around.

Raelynn finally in her dorm gets rid of the light colored clothes, and with her magic burns them. She has on her casual dark pink crop top and blue bottoms.

She sat on her bed, Sarah turning as they botb shared the dorm with candles and a dreary appearance. "So?"

"Being Alfea sucks, seeing all that positive energy. Ugh."

"Oh we know that dear sister, can you tell me something more useful."

"Sure, I think I found our targets, Wan and Korra."

"Are you sure?"

"Oh, I'm positive, but first, we have to test their power before we do anything rash. I won't be a fool and catch the wrong prey."
