Chapter 5-It's hard making friends

Ram: "Oni or not, doesn't excuse you from interrupting the personal time me and my sister were spending together," the pink-haired girl said with disgust in her tone directed towards the old man

Setanta: "Being the next Oni chief, I would have expected you to understand the importance of this discovery, but I see that you're still childish as always" Setanta said looking down on the two girls before him

Ram: "hmph, That's big talk coming from you old man"

Subaru watched on as the two went back and forth with their augment. Feeling the tension start to grow Subaru tried to speak up to ease the tension with also trying not to upset the girl in the process

Subaru: "umm... hey, you must be one of the other kids here, it's nice to meet you," Subaru said with a smile towards the girl

Looking towards him, the girl looked at him with a blank expression and turned away to continue the conversation, ignoring his existence entirely.

Subaru: "Don't just ignore me!" Subaru said starting to get frustrated as he was being ignored much to his dismay

Ram: "Is this some kind of joke? the reason why you called a meeting was for this?, you waste my time, the time I was spending with my sister for that boy over there" The girl said with annoyance in her tone, glaring at him

Setanta: "like I said it's important," Setanta said glaring back at the girl

As Subaru watched from a safe distance as to not get caught in the crossfire of their glaring contest. As it was getting heated It seemed like both of them wouldn't back down, until a voice was heard from the back of the girl with pink hair

?: "Nee-sama…" a voice said in a timid tone

Ram: "Yes? Rem are you okay?"

Rem: "Yes...I'm okay, I was just wondering...after we're done here, can we go back to the flower field and spend more time together?" The girl said while lowering her head

Ram: "Sure Rem, I always have time to spend with my little sister," Ram said with a smile towards Rem patting her head

Rem "Really!" Rem said as her eyes lit up with excitement

Setanta: "Not so fast! You still need to do your daily training before you do anything else"

Rem: "Eeep!" Rem jumped up from being scared by Satanta screaming at them

Ram: "Look what you've done, scaring my poor little sister, drop dead," she said glaring at both Setanta and Subaru

Subaru: "why am I the one being glared at!?,I didn't do anything"

While it's true Subaru didn't do anything, he was now being glared at intensely by the pink-haired girl seeming like she wanted to kill him on the spot. Subaru turning his head to avoid her gaze, but as it was he could feel as if holes were being burned through the back of his head from her intense glare

Subaru: "Why do I feel like I'm the victim here"

Rem: "I- I'm sorry Nee-sama...I didn't mean to interrupt your training, you don't have to spend more time with me" The girl said bringing her head back down looking as if she was on the verge of tears

Ram: "No, it's fine Rem don't worry about it, don't mind these pathetic excuses for men, after were done our training for today, you and I can spend as much time together as you want"

Rem: "Alright Nee-sama," The girl said still keeping her head down

Setanta: "Well now that, that is settled get to training I have work to do"

Walking back to his office and closing the door behind him, Subaru sighed a sigh of relief noticing the tension die down now that they stopped their glaring contest

Subaru: "Thank god that's over, I thought I was going to collapse from the amount of tension that was in the air"

Alec: "Well that was something wasn't it?"

Hearing a voice behind him Subaru turned around and noticed Alec standing behind him from a distance

Subaru: "Where you there the whole time and didn't even try to stop the argument?"

Alec: "Well, of course, I'm not trying to get in between the crossfire of Ram-sama and the chief, don't worry this isn't the first time this happened. Also, it's good to see you Ram-sama, Rem, hope you've been having a good day"

Ram: "I was having a good day until that old man rudely interrupted my time with my little sister for that boy over there," Ram said pointing towards Subaru

Alec "Well I'm the one who brought him back here, so I take all the blame Ram-sama for the inconvenience I've caused you"

Ram: "At least your honest about your mistake, since you brought him back here make sure you keep him under control so this won't happen again"

Subaru: "I don't do or say anything, and this is the treatment I get!?"

Ram: "So then Rem lets go and get this over with so we can go back and play together"

Rem: "Alright! Ne-sama is so kind"

Alec: "So Subaru, what do you think of Ram-sama?"

Watching the two walk away Subaru thought to himself

Subaru: "Well... that girl with the pink hair is something all right, she seems short-tempered, she needs to work out her anger issues, and that girl with the blue hair that was hiding behind her is the complete opposite to the other girl, she seems very timid, they also look completely identical are they twin sisters?

Alec:" Yes they are, in our village though twins are thought of as a sort of taboo, cursed children so to speak. At birth Ram-sama and her sister were going to get killed at birth because of them being twins, the only reason they are alive today is because of the immense power Ram-sama possessed as a child. Seeing the immense potential held within her, our chief spared their lives. So please if Ram-sama is acting coldly towards you, don't take it personally, she's just being protective of her sister since some people in our village don't agree with the chief sparing her younger sister"

Feeling bad about what he said earlier about Ram Subaru tried to take back what he said

Subaru: "Oh I'm sorry I didn't know, that's so cruel, how could people do that, they were going to kill them off, just like that?"

Alec: "Yes, you see in our village strength is valued the most over all else, Oni already have a low birth rate as it is but when they are born they are usually born with 2 horns but twins are only born with one, and our horns are the main source of our power making us be able to draw mana from the area. And since twins only have one horn each they are viewed as weak and cursed, that's the reason they are killed at birth but like I said Ram-sama is an exception because of her power even if she is a twin, she is looked at as the next chief of the Oni village. No one in this village has the power to match her in strength, not myself, not even the chief himself"

As Alec said this Subaru thought to himself on how he should probably stay on the good side of this girl from now on, but then going back to Alec's previous words that passed over his head, it hit Subaru

Subaru: "Wait you said mana!? Like as in magic? Magic exists here?" Subaru said with a shocked and confused expression planted on his face

Looking at Subaru dumfounded as if he just asked a stupid question, Alec stared at him with wide eyes waiting for Subaru to say he was "joking", but judging from Subaru's facial expression it seemed as if he was telling the truth

Alec: "You don't know what mana or magic is huh? Well, I'll explain it to you so listen carefully. Magic is made up of 6 elements, fire, wind, earth, yin, and yang, to use said elements you must say the incantation of the element, fura for wind, Dona for earth, Huma for water, Goa for fire, shamak for yin and jiwald for yang which can be enhanced to increase the power of spell by adding extra incantations El, Ul and Al, but you can't just use magic all the time all willy-nilly especially people who are new to it, because if you do, you might damage your gate which allows mana to pass through you"

Subaru: "cool! So when do I start shooting out fireballs through my hands or maybe start throwing boulders around or shooting ice from my hands!"

Alec: "Not so fast Subaru, weren't you listening to what I just said? People who have no experience in using magic might damage their gate which could lead to some serious repercussions"

As Alec said this Subaru's hopes and excitement were shot down as he was expecting to use some high-level tier magic right off the bat

Alec: "But since we are Oni, we can harness a lot more mana from the atmosphere via our horns making us be able to use more magic and strengthen our physical attributes more than the average person, so if you just train every day and harness your skills you can become very powerful"

Subaru's hopes instantly shot back up and started jumping up and down with excitement

Subaru: "Alright then, when can we start! Didn't the chief and Ram say they have the training to do today? Why don't we go follow them so you can teach me how this works"

Alec: "Sure I was going to bring you there anyways, usually we train for about 2 hours a day so be prepared you'll be very exhausted after this. Oh and that reminds me, remember our deal? After the meeting, I promised to have a sparring match with you"

Subaru: you want to spar with me after training for that long? Were you going to beat me while I was exhausted after training for so long, was this your plan all along!?

Alec: "Of course not Subaru I wouldn't be that cruel now would I? I'll go easy on you unless you want me to go all out I have no problem with that either," Alec said with a sly grin on his face

Subaru: "Uhh no thanks, just take me to the training site already"

After walking for a few minutes away from the village and into the nearby forest they finally reached the training site. It was a beautiful area, very luscious with grass, untouched from the rest of the part of the village, completely deserted with a great waterfall dead center in the middle of the area.

Subaru: "This is the training site? It's so beautiful, why would any of you want to train her-"

As Subaru was admiring the beautiful landscape before him, a second later he was shocked instantly by what he was witnessing. In front of him were the same 2 girls from before who he encountered after the meeting, and what they were doing in front of Subaru completely blew his mind, Water was being brought up from the lake in the waterfall swirling around like a whirlpool then scattered into the air

Subaru: "Is...this magic, that was amazing" Subaru said, eyes wide open as he witnessed the amazing spectacle before him.

Alec: "Hello Ram-sama, Rem, I see you're doing well with your training as usual," Alec said waving to the two girls in front of him

Ram: "Oh Alec it's you, I presume you've come here to witness my greatness once again," she said in an arrogant tone

Subaru" how arrogant can one person be? Subaru thought to himself

Alec: "Not today Ram-sama, I've come here to train Subaru, to see his magic output and his capabilities"

Ram: "Hmph, well go on then don't expect much from him he's still just a kid"

Subaru: "You're the same age as me!" Subaru said frustratedly on the spot

Alec: "Don't worry Ram-sama I have full faith in Subaru" He said giving Subaru another pat on the head

Ram: "Alright then, I bet he's not as great as my sister here, go on Rem show them what you can do," She said with high pride as she patted her sisters head

Rem: "Alright Nee-sama...I'll do my best"

As the girl walked up the waterfall in front of her she got into a stance, put her arms out then a small glow protruded from her forehead.

Rem: "hmm!"

As she put her hands out a whirlpool shot up from the lake and scattered into the air just like before. It wasn't as big as the last one that Ram made but it was still very impressive to Subaru who was still shocked by the display of power

Subaru: "Wow that was amazing, your really good at that" Subaru said with a smile towards the blue-haired girl

Rem: "..."

Not saying anything Rem moved behind her sister hiding behind her

Subaru: "Not really a talker huh?"

Ram: "It's because of your scary eyes and face, that you have scared my little sister, reflect on your actions"

Subaru: " I know my eyes are scary but you don't have to say it out loud!"

Alec: "Alright then Subaru show me what you got," he said pointed towards the waterfall ahead

Walking up to the waterfall before him standing right next to the two sisters, Subaru stood there and stared up at the great waterfall, as Subaru stared up at the waterfall he got into a stance, put his arms beside him, clenched his fists, and then…..

"..."

Subaru: "So what do you want me to do exactly?"

Alec: "concentrate, concentrate all your energy, and bring out your horns, just imagine condensing all your energy in one point and let it out"

Subaru: "Alright… I'll try"

As Subaru stood there he closed his eyes, clenched his fists, arms to his side, and back in his stance Subaru did what Alec said and tried to concentrate. Subaru stood there and tried to bring out as much energy as he could muster in one central point to bring out his horns, and then it happened, two white glowing horns protruded from his forehead, just like before when he first entered the village and when he first brought out his horns he felt that strange feeling again, his entire body was surging with power and strength, the power that he would have never dreamed to have ever achieved

Subaru: "Ahhh!"

When Subaru put his hands out, just like the other two before him, a whirlpool was summoned from bellow the lake and sored high above the waterfall before scattering in the air

Subaru: *Huff *Huff* I did it, I did it!" Subaru said before collapsing on the ground from using too much energy

From the distance, the onlookers looked on with shocked expressions, Ram was shocked he could pull it off and Rem was shocked because her sister was, except for Alec, he had a big smile on his face seeing Subaru pull it off

Alec: "I knew you had it in you Subaru," Alec then brought out his hand to help Subaru up from the ground

Subaru: "Thanks..that's much harder than it looks, I feel like I'm about to collapse," Subaru said while his legs started shaking feeling like they were about to give out from exhaustion

Ram: "I didn't think he had it in him"

Subaru: "Thanks for praise...I guess, you know that's an odd way of saying that was amazing"

Ram then looked at Subaru with a blank expression and turned away from him completely ignoring his existence once again

Subaru: "You're doing that again!?"

"..."

Rem: "That...that was amazing...you're much better than me," Rem said in a timid tone then proceeded to hide behind her sister

Ram: "Rem! Don't praise him, you did much better than him"

Subaru: "You know you should learn a thing or two from your sister, she knows how to give out good compliments and is nice!"

Ram: "Hmph, don't push your luck," Ram said shooting a glare at him

Subaru: "Scary!"

Alec: "Well Subaru you did it, how do you feel?"

Subaru: "I feel tired like I'm about to fall over with each step I take, I wonder if I'll ever get used to this"

Alec: "in time Subaru, all it takes is practice and concentration, and eventually you'll be able to bring out your horns all the time with no problem"

Subaru: "I hope so, I want to be powerful enough to gain the village chiefs trust and become a part of this village so I can go speak with those wisemen to find out about Japan"

Alec: "It will be hard, you'll have to train your body day in and day out, are you up for the challenge?"

Subaru: "Anything, I'll do anything to become strong"

Alec smiled and gave Subaru a fist bump for his efforts. Subaru then turned and met eyes with both Rem and Ram, putting his hand in the air and pointing his finger in the sky Subaru said his iconic catchphrase

Subaru: "So how about we start over, let me introduce myself, I'm Subaru, Natsuki Subaru nice to meet you," Subaru said smiling towards the two girls.
