Chapter 5: Injured Hiccup

Tenzin was grateful that he wasn't working, it had been a horrible month. Tarrlok had stirred up trouble among the local gangs and it had been met with fierce defiance from every corner. As one of Republic City's leaders he had to been seen doing something, despite the fact that it was the responsibility of the local police he had been forced to be involved, much to the annoyance of Lin Beifong. Now however he was relaxing at a local beach in the Fire nation with his wife Pema and his children, Jinora, Ikki and the two year old Meelo, his wife Pema had been trying to persuade him to take a break for while and Tenzin had finally relented when Fire Lord Izumi had kindly offered a beach house on one of the beaches in the Fire nation islands.

And so there they were, enjoying the bright sunlight while watching their children playing not to far away. Jinora and Ikki where running around the young Meelo encouraging him to run after them while they evaded him using elaborate jumps and acrobatics, the little toddler laughed as he ran flat out to catch one of them. "Don't run to far now" said Pema to her children, not one single child took notice of these words however and Pema turned to Tenzin. "It's good that you get to relax a bit, you're working a bit to hard Tenzin." Tenzin looked his wife and sighed "Yes, I know but I can't ignore my responsibilities, as much I wish I could sometimes" Pema shot Tenzin a disgruntled look "Well, I wished you could spend more time with me and the children, they rarely see you, you know." Tenzin sighed again.

"Yes, I've missed the time I could spend time with you and the-" but he was interrupted by two girl screaming quite a distance away, a couple second later Jinora and Ikki came running into sight carrying Meelo between themselves. "Help! Scary creature over there daddy!" said Ikki while looking frightened. Jinora looked at her father and said in a serious tone "Dad, please come and have a look, I think the creature is about to eat someone. I saw someone on the beach right- but Tenzin had interrupted her "Lead the way, Jinora!"

Tenzin followed Jinora for about hundred meters until they passed some large rocks that led to another beach, it was empty, except something Tenzin had not been expecting. "Stay back!" said Tenzin while shoving Jinora behind the rocks "Tell your mother to get help, someone is in danger!" said Tenzin in a stern voice. Jinora leapt to her feet and ran to her mother, Tenzin however rounded the corner and was face to face with a large black dragon, it's dark scales rippled in the shining sun. The dragon was pacing from side to side blocking a small figure laying on the beach, it was not moving. Tenzin moved in front of the black dragon and readied himself to a fight, the dragon showed it's white teeth and growled.

It lowered it's back and slowly moved closer to the body that still was laying on the beach, unmoving. "Get away from him!" yelled Tenzin and shot a powerful jet of air at the dragon, it dodged the attack and shot it's purple fire at Tenzin, being a Air-bending master he dodged it easily, but still was surprised when the rock behind him exploded with a force of small bomb as the shot connected. The dragon reared and roared with as much volume it could muster, it deafened Tenzin's hearing to the point of ringing. The dragon was now standing over the body and covered it with it's paws, but to Tenzin's surprise it didn't take off with it's pray, it wasn't even attempting to flee, it just stood there it still growling menacingly at Tenzin. Tenzin had now come close enough to see the persons face between the legs of the dragon, it was a teenage boy. Tenzin started, something wasn't right. He looked to the clothing of the unconscious boy and to the dragon that was covering the boy with it's body, his eyes fell upon the brown leather of the tail and the saddle that was on top it's back, the many ropes that connected the tail to the saddle and comprehension came to him like a flood, the dragon wasn't about to eat him, it was protecting him!

Tenzin looked at the dragon and said "I'm not going to hurt your rider dragon! I just want to help him!" and to Tenzin's amazement the dragon who had been just a moment ago growling and to the point of shooting his fire again had relaxed and it's slit-like eyes became round as dinner plates. It stared at Tenzin with suspicion, and he knew that he had to convince the dragon that he wasn't gonna hurt his friend or he would never get close enough. "Look..." said Tenzin a calm voice "I just want to help him, I know someone who can help him, if you just allow me" Tenzin began to creep closer and closer and held out his hand towards the dragon. It's eyes was still round but it became more and more wary until it growled again. Taking a new stance Tenzin put both of his hands behind his head and said calmly "Look, I'm unarmed! I just want to help him..." He walked a few more steps and now he was only a few steps away from the dragon, it looked at him with it's big green eyes and then Tenzin reached out again and slowly touched it, the dragon purred as Tenzin's hand caressed the nose of the dragon.

The dragon's angry demeanor fell away in a instant and now it was directing it's attention at the boy between it's legs instead, the dragon licked him twice across the face and cooed softly. The boy gave a painful weak moan and turned his head as if he was experiencing a really bad dream. Tenzin looked at the now calm dragon and said "We need to get him to a healer, I know someone not far from here..." the dragon seemed to approve of this idea and used it's claws to position the boy's body on it's back, it roared suddenly and gestured to Tenzin to get on. Baffled and slightly surprised Tenzin clambered on in a hurry and said "Dragon, this way! He pointed towards the beach house in which he had been staying. The black dragon bounded with surprising speed towards the direction Tenzin had indicated.

Tenzin had carried the boy into his house and laid him on his and Pema's bed, he gave another weak moan as he was laid down but as soon as his head leaned against the pillows he gave a soothing gasp and fell still. The black dragon squeezed through the tight door and laid itself protectively to the boy's right, it's size made up for the entire side of the bed and this had been quite impressive as the bed was made for a royal and therefor was double the size of a normal bed. "Wait here, and I'll get my wife and get help." said Tenzin in a blurry panic and then he added despite the fact that I didn't know if the dragon had understood him entirely "Please don't hurt my family if they come in here." and to Tenzin's relief and slight surprise the dragon gave a solemn nod. He hurried out of the room and exited the house, he arrived at the stairs leading down to the main road but after only taking a couple of steps he heard the voice of his wife Pema, evidently talking to someone following her.

"My husband said someone needed help, according to my daughter some creature had gotten hold of a boy" and a moment later she rounded the corner of the house followed closely by a crowd of people. "There you are Tenzin!" said Pema cradling Meelo in her arms, Jinora and Ikki was closely following behind their mother. Behind them however was a crowd of about a dozen people, it consisted of three royal guards, two servants and to Tenzin's relief a man with the insignia of the south poles healers. "Healer, you're needed! I've got a boy in need of healing in my house". The healer nodded curtly and followed Tenzin closely, they ascended the stairs and was about to enter the bedroom when Tenzin stopped the Healer with an outstretched arm "There is something you should be aware of before entering..." said Tenzin seriously. The healer looked impatient and said rather spitefully "With respect, Councilman Tenzin it can wait, I have to help this boy before its to late, what did you say happened to him?"

"You don't understand, but there is not time for arguing, just do not freak out when you enter. As for what happend to him I have no idea, I was hoping you could tell me on closer inspection." said Tenzin even more seriously. They entered the bedroom and the healer gave an involuntary gasp as he spotted the black dragon laying right next to the bed, but after a few seconds his gaze fell upon the body of the injured boy and he started forward. The dragon peered at the healer with wary eyes but still allowed him to inspect the his human more thoroughly. After a moment the healer removed the singed and slightly burnt tunic from the boy's chest and he gave a loud wince as the chest revealed a lightning patterned burns coming from right hand to his chest.

The healer started to prod the wounds with his fingers, as he caressed them with utmost tenderness the boy began to whimper and groan in pain. The dragon looked at the boy with a concerned look and gave another cooing whimper. After removing the last piece clothing the healer seemed to come to a conclusion, he ran it through to Tenzin. "The boy is showing injuries caused by lightning, it's clear by the jagged wounds on his arm and chest. There is only only one thing that can save him now" He fumbled with a small tube, it carried the symbol of the northern water tribe. "This is spirit water from the north, it was given to us to save someone that is in great need" the Healer elaborated.

He uncorked the tube and drew out the water using water bending, it floated to the boy's chest and stretched across his chest and arm in a enveloping sling, with a small movement of the healers arms the water began glow blue and Tenzin could see the wounds begin to siphon off like the removal of paint on wood. The boy's breathing had come out in ragged gasps as this went on and when the water had done it's last act he lay still and his breathing had relaxed. "That should do the trick, I'm afraid he's going to have some scars left on his right arm but that's the best I can do" said the Healer with relief in his voice "But he's gonna need rest, and if he wakes early let me know." Tenzin had also let out a involuntary gasp of relief at the words of the boy's health. "Thank you, I'll let you know as soon as I can when he wakes." The healer exited the room, and almost immediately all the members of Tenzins family entered the room, they all gasped as their eyes fell on the black dragon. Ikki and Jinora hid behind their mother and Pema stated in terrified whisper "Tenzin... there is there a dragon in the room..." Tenzin looked at the dragon and back at his wife. "Yes, but he's not dangerous. He just wanted to protect him." he gestured to the figure of the sleeping boy.

Pema slowly approached the bed and peered at the sleeping boy, she tutted as she saw the thin scarring on his right arm. "What did the healer say happened to him?" whispered Pema with a glance at her husband. "He says that he has been injured by lightning, judging from his wounds anyway" whispered Tenzin back. "Is he going to be alright Dad?" whispered Jinora looking concerned. "Yes, but he needs sleep." whispered Tenzin back while crouching down to speak to his daughter, he stood up and directed his words to the now tired looking dragon. "Keep him safe" said Tenzin and to the astonishment of Pema, Jinora and Ikki the dragon nodded with a tired look. They all exited the bedroom and went into the living room together, the royal guards who had been waiting for Tenzin to emerge stood up hurriedly "Is everything alright Councilman Tenzin?" asked one of the guards with worry.

"Everything's alright, thanks for coming in such a hurry. I can take it from here" said Tenzin lightly, the guard nodded and gestured to his companions to follow him out of the house. The house was now empty, except for Tenzin, Pema and their children. Pema also looking tired sat down on one of the couches and addressed Tenzin again "He doesn't look like he's from here, where do you think he came from?" asked Pema curiously. "I have no idea, you have a point though. He doesn't look like any fire nation citizen I ever seen before." said Tenzin looking thoughtful for a moment and then he said in conclusion "Well, hopefully he will be in a well enough state to answer our questions when he's awake." There was long silence following this statement, until Pema broke the silence with another question of her own,

"But what is going to happen to him? We're gonna have to find his parents once he wakes, and if he's an orphan then what are we going to do?" asked Pema with concern. Tenzin didn't answer, but after a moment he said with a smile "Whatever happens we'll work it out, just the way we usually tackle problems." and suddenly Ikki lit up like a firework "Ooooo, is he our new brother now?" asked Ikki with glee in her voice, Jinora looked hopeful and Meelo threw his fists upwards in happiness, it was clear he had no idea what was going on. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves" said Tenzin exasperated, but it was to late. Ikki was now jumping up and down and said "I have a new brother! I have a new brother!" and then a sudden thought appeared to her "Oooo can I play with the dragon daddy? can I please!?" Tenzin looked at his wife with a desperate plee for help, but Pema just laughed.

Hiccup was walking in thick mist, he had been wandering this mist for some time now, it seemed to envelop every sense he possessed. He couldn't make sense of it either, was he dead? He figured he can't be, how else would be able to feel his own body and use his eyes?
"Hello?" heard Hiccup himself say, it rang throughout the mist like an echo, seeping spookily into every corner "Hello- Hello- Hello-" it echoed back, and then a voice carried through the mist, "Wake up..." it said, Hiccup could distinguish a girls voice. He peered all around him for where the voice had come from, but the mist remained as non seeing as ever. He called out this time "Who are you?" and like before, it echoed like multiple people where asking the same question, "Who are you- Who are you- Who are you-".

"It's time to wake up Hiccup." said the voice again this time again, the voice had come from behind him, Hiccup spun on the spot and looked behind him. The voice had been so close that it sounded like a whisper, and then he saw her. A teenage girl with strange clothing stood some distance away, she had dark-brown hair down to her shoulders but what struck her as most unusual was her eyes, they were glowing pure white. Hiccup tried move closer to see her face properly, but he was stuck. His feet was not responding to his command "Wake up Hiccup" said the girl again this time with a smile, and Hiccup felt some sort connection to this girl that he couldn't explain, but just as he had felt this unusual feeling however the floor gave in and he was falling, until he woke up with a gasp.

Hiccup sat up in the darkness of the room, it was evidently night judging from the fact that moonlight was spilling through the windows behind him onto the bed. Hiccup stared around the room, the window were slightly ajar and a slight breeze was drifting through the window causing the draperies to flutter like a veil. He felt his body with his hands, someone had removed his clothes, leaving only his pants. His head was slightly pounding as he his eyes adjusted to the darkness around the room. Hiccup wondered whether he should get up or not, the bed was so comfortable. And then the events of before rushed through his mind like lightning. Him flying Toothless, escaping dragons, fighting a skrill, redirecting lightning, and him passing out.

Toothless! thought Hiccup in blind panic, he began to shift his weight and suddenly something large moved to his right in the darkness, and the bright green eyes of Toothless stared him down through the darkness. "Toothless!" said Hiccup in relief and the great dragon let out a happy warble and immediately ran around the room causing a loud racket as he knocked everything to ground, "Toothless! Stop, oh- you- come on! Knock it off...!" scolded Hiccup. Toothless was now jumping to the beams in the ceiling in happiness, he was making a noise similar to a celebrating rooster. With a loud bang the door slammed opened, and a second later the room was basked in light from some sort of glass orb in the ceiling. Hiccup drew back in shock at the sudden light. In the door stood a tall man with arrow tattoos across his head and arms. He looked around seriously before his eyes falling upon Hiccup's slightly drawn back figure.

"Sorry for scaring you, young man. I thought something had gone wrong." said the man, and he walked inside the room. Behind him stood a woman, carrying a small toddler and behind her close to her midriff stood two young girls.

Blinking in surprise at the amount of people suddenly in the room, Hiccup remained in bed and drew the covers up defensively. "Where am I? and who are you?" asked Hiccup timidly, and to his surprise the man smiled. "You are in my house, eh- well our temporary house anyway. And this is my wife Pema, and my children Jinora, Ikki and Meelo." He pointed to each of his children in turn, "And I'm Tenzin, can I ask for your name?" asked the man called Tenzin. Hiccup started slightly thinking whether he should lie, but he decided on the truth, he had saved him after all. "My name is Hiccup, Hiccup Haddock" said Hiccup.

"Well Hiccup, I'm sorry to say but you've been in a terrible accident. I found you on the beach not far from here, terribly hurt. I've had to call a healer to heal your wounds, but unfortunately you'll have permanent damage on your right hand" said Tenzin and Hiccup looked at his right hand and gasped in horror, going from his index and middle finger to his elbow was thin jagged scars, shaped like lightning. "We've been wondering how and why you were on that beach in the first place Hiccup?" asked Tenzin tentatively. Hiccup looked at the man called Tenzin, and he noticed that he was wearing elaborate robes in red and yellow, he looked around at the other members of his family, they were also wearing the same robes.

Hiccup wondered if they were in some sort tribe, but remembering Tenzins questions he said "I was attacked as I attempted to cross the Serpent's Gap" All around the room there was confused frowns, "What is the Serpent's Gap?" asked Tenzin curiously. "It's the gap that divides the mainland and the Barbaric Archipelago, that's what a friend of mine told me anyway" said Hiccup in earnest. Now the faces of everyone present was looking at each other in questioning looks until Tenzin broke the silence "I'm sorry but we've never heard of anything called that, is it close to here?" asked Tenzin gently, "I don't know if it is, where am I?" asked Hiccup again.

"You are in the Fire Nation, we're not far from the capital" said Tenzin and to his surprise Hiccup stiffened and sat bolt upright. "But that is apart of the mainland! Did you hear that Toothless? We've made it!" and Hiccup looked at Toothless who was giving his biggest gummy smile yet and warbled happily at Hiccup's excitement. The girl's behind Pema giggled at the smiling dragon, and Tenzin looked even more confused "What did you call him?" Hiccup looked slightly embarrassed as he spoke to Tenzin "His name is Toothless, it's because- eh well see for yourselves. Do it bud." The black dragon gave his gummy smile and then he shot out his teeth with a flurry of white. The girl's ooed and awed at Toothless and one of them looked like on the brink of self-restraint as she jumped up and down, but then Tenzin spoke again.

"Well, glancing over unusual names, it still doesn't explain why you arrived at the beach in this terrible ordeal." asked Tenzin. Hiccup knew he had to tell the whole story, he owned them that much for saving him. "Well it starts with my banishment about half a month ago..." and so he went into explaining how he had befriended Toothless and how he had been forced to kill another dragon as a rite of passage, and how he had refused, resulting in him getting disowned and banished from his tribe. He also explained how he had heard of the mainland in passing and had tried to venture there from Berk, and when even more questions were asked about his homeland he spent the better part of an hour explaining about how his people, the vikings had sailed across the sullen sea and found refuge in the island archipelago, the archipelago that was filled to the brim with dragons of all sizes. He also told them that their tribe had been in war against these dragons because they kept raiding the village and stealing food. He also explained how he had been using his gifts to survive the last two weeks.

What intrigued Tenzin however was the mention of Hiccup's gifts, and he asked him "When you say you used your gifts, do you mean bending?"

"Is that what I can do?" said Hiccup with a hopeful glance at Tenzin, "What is it that you can do?" asked Tenzin with interest. "Well, It's quite hard to control you see. I don't want to hurt any of you." said Hiccup ashamedly, he still wasn't good enough to control the elements properly, he remembered the last time he had tried to anything "bending" related, a wall of flames and a forest almost being burnt to a crisp. But he smiled at the wild excitement of the rest of the family, "Oooo, are you a bender?" asked one of the girls Hiccup. "I think so, I was hoping your dad could tell me what I am"

"Well lets get you in a safe place to show us-" said Tenzin but he was interrupted by his wife Pema. "Are you sure that it's prudent to do anything like that right now Tenzin? He has just woken up from a terrible accident, you need rest Hiccup." said Pema to Hiccup, but Hiccup just stared at her, she was looking very concerned and she was looking at Hiccup with a motherly way. He had no memory of anyone showing any concern for his well being before, he blinked rather furiously before saying "I need to know, I've been wondering ever since I've been banished what I can do, please..." he added in a plead and she relented "Ohh alright, but I want you to rest after you've showed Tenzin whatever you can do"

Hiccup bowed his head in thanks, and they all went outside. Hiccup saw the moon illuminating the sea like a white sun on the calm waters. A soft breeze played across his face and his hair rippled in the wind. They all went down to the beach, Toothless had helped Hiccup limp down the stairs and onto the stretching beach. Hiccup walked forward a bit and turned to face the silent but encouraging crowd. "Well, here goes nothing..." muttered Hiccup under his breath before he thought Okay, how am I going to show them without risking hurting them? thought Hiccup and then the answer came to him, wind!.

He turned towards the sea and threw a hard jab at the empty air with as much concentration as he could muster, he thought WIND, and to his delight wind shot out of his hands with the power of a small storm, it caused the water to spray in every direction as the wind blew hard against the calm waters.
It showered them all in salty seawater, Hiccup turned to look at the gobsmacked family who was staring at him like they couldn't believe their eyes. Every single one of them had their mouths open in a comical O, Hiccup laughed slightly nervously as they seemed to be stunned to their cores. "Is everything alrig-" was what Hiccup had been was trying to say but before he could finish the sentence Tenzin's face split into a boy-like grin, and he yelled "You can air bend?!" with shock edged in every syllable.

"I suppose so, so am I an air bender? Is that what I am?" asked Hiccup with a grin. "Hiccup do you have any idea how extraordinary this is?" asked Tenzin almost in a whisper. "It means that I can bend air right?" asked Hiccup slightly confused at the still shocked faces. "It means that you're an air bender Hiccup, there is only four air benders in the whole world, and you are staring at them." Hiccup looked at them with shock, "You can also do what I can do?" he asked in a gleeful voice. At this the youngest girl ran at Hiccup and stopped right in front of him, "Oooh Hiccup, you're one of us now. Daddy says that all the air benders died many years ago and that we're the last line of air benders left in the world, but with you it means that we can all teach you air bending."

Tenzin couldn't contain his excitement anymore, he jumped up and down on the spot doing a sort of celebratory jig. "I can't believe my eyes, an air bender! After a hundred and fifty years, the first natural born air bender. said Tenzin, still in his boy-like grin. He sounded weak with happiness. The small girl jumped into the air and landed on top of Hiccups shoulders with a soft thud, it had been as if she had floated there. "You are now our new brother Hiccup." said the girl, "My name is Ikki, and that is my older sister Jinora and my brother Meelo." she said this very fast, it tumbled out like as she was constantly on the brink of exploding into speech. Hiccup said nothing but Ikki seemed to not need an answer, she jumped off Hiccups shoulders and ran around in circles with enormous excitement. But Hiccup had come to his senses "Ohh but this is great!" he shouted, "I finally know what I can do." said Hiccup in happy excitement, and then he got a sudden inspiration. He turned towards the sea again, bound to impress again. Maybe there was more fire benders than there was air benders but it was worth a shot, he called out to the family he was starting to like. He punched the air again and thought FIRE and a great spiral of blue flames flew like a sword at the calm water, it foamed at the sudden heat and died after a few seconds. Tenzin was still in his celebratory dance and he almost fell over in shock.

"T-this can't be" said Tenzin in utter disbelief, he turned to his wife who was also beyond comprehension of what had just happened. "What can't be?" asked Hiccup interested but Tenzin seemed overwhelmed and he opened his mouth and closed it several times before he finally found his voice.
"Hiccup, you're the avatar." said Tenzin in almost a whisper, Hiccup had to strain his ears to hear what he had said. "The avatar? what is an avatar?" asked Hiccup with confusion.

"The avatar is the master of all the elements, the only person ever known to control all four elements." said Tenzin still in a disbelieving voice. "But that is what is incredible, we've already got an avatar, and she's in the south pole. The previous avatar was my father before he died, his avatar spirit was reincarnated as the new avatar, a girl called Korra." Hiccup was at a loss to what to say, was Tenzin insinuating that he had been Tenzins father in his previous life?

"But how can I be this avatar if someone is already the avatar? are you quite sure that I am this person?" asked Hiccup anxiously. Tenzin looked at Hiccup with new found respect and reverence, "I'm sure Hiccup, only the avatar can bend more than one element, but you must realize that this is something beyond incredible, there has never been more than one avatar in a lifetime. This is probably why we crossed paths, it was meant for us to meet, it can't be a coincidence." said Tenzin before continuing.

"You must also realize that the Avatar is the protector of all people and his or her job is to keep the world in balance. That is your mission Hiccup, I bestow upon the responsibility and knowledge to keep the world in balance. And this is why you are going to be going with me back to Republic City to train you up." finished Tenzin with a grim smile, Hiccup didn't know what was going on, him being some sort of savior? or a person of incredible power and strength, it just didn't seem likely. If he was so powerful how comes his bending only surfaced now, after 14 years of being bullied, neglected and treated like a nobody. "But Tenzin, I just can't be the avatar" said Hiccup in a hollow voice. Tenzin started, "Why can't you be the avatar?" he asked gently.

"I am a nobody, I've always been the screw-up. I just can't be this savior you're thinking of." said Hiccup sadly and now he realized the great responsibility of these powers he wasn't sure he wanted them anymore, he just wanted people to like him for who he was. "Is there a way for me to stop these bending abilities? to give them to another person? one who clearly deserves it?" said Hiccup to Tenzin. Tenzin looked at the saddened Hiccup and put on a very kind smile, he walked up to Hiccup and looked him straight in the eye. He put a hand on Hiccup's shoulder and said

"I can't Hiccup, and I wouldn't even if I could. You can't imagine how many people who would give anything for your powers, the fact that you are willing to give them up willingly is a testament to why you've been chosen. It's ones actions that makes the person, far more than our abilities." and with that he told Hiccup to get to bed.

Hiccup's mind was buzzing with the new found information and what it incited for his future, he was the avatar and he would be going to some sort of city where they would teach him air bending. He limped back to the house with Toothless following close by, and Hiccup looked at his best friend with more fondness than he could've put into words. "I'm glad you're here bud" said Hiccup with a whimper as his foot stiffly walked the ground. Toothless looked at Hiccup with his big green comforting eyes, and after a moment they hugged. Hiccup held on to the great scaly body as if he was a lifeline and after a long moment broke apart. He went into the bedroom in which he had occupied before, he got in and almost fell asleep instantly. What he didn't expect however was to be enveloped in thick mist once again, with a voice calling out "Wake up..."
