Astrid jumped as she heard the loud noise of a pair of wings flapping nearby. She sat up and rubbed her eyes and she looked out towards the night sky. She could still see the moon and stars dotted the sky as well. She stood up as she heard heavy footsteps coming towards the main room and she looked up to see Hiccup walking in. He took off his helmet and threw it on top of the table, an emotionless look on his face.
"What's wrong," Astrid asked him, but he didn't answer her. Instead he walked past her and she just watched as he kept the same look on his face. Astrid looked over towards Toothless but he had the same sad look on his face, similar to the one when Astrid first arrived at the hideout. She remained in the same spot and a few minutes later she heard Hiccup walk back into the room. In both of his hands he carried a bottle of mead and he set them down on the table.
He remained silent as he walked over to a drawer and he moved several things around. After a few seconds of searching he stood up and held a glass in his hand. Hiccup turned around and walked back over to the table and then pulled out a chair and sat down. Astrid watched as he uncorked one of the bottles and poured the mead into the cup. Right as he finished pouring the drink he tilted the cup back and drained it completely. He slammed the cup down and he leaned forward, his shoulders sagging in the process. Astrid slowly walked around the table and pulled out the chair on the other side of him. She carefully watched him as she sat down and saw a sad look on his face. He didn't say anything as he poured another drink and then looked over at her as he set the bottle down. "What happened," she asked and he remained silent as he looked back down at his drink.
"Hiccup," Astrid said as his eyes slowly looked up at hers again, "What happened during the raid." She could tell that he was debating about answering her question but she was going to wait for him to say something. He let out a sigh and then tossed the drink back and drained the cup once again.
"A building was on fire," he told her as he refilled his cup, "And a woman said that her son was in the building." Astrid remained silent as she watched a hard expression come across his face as he told her what happened. "I had Toothless land on the outskirts of the village and I rushed in to save the boy." Hiccup slowly rose up from his seat as he drained another cup and grabbed the bottle. "There was fire everywhere," Hiccup told her, "Walls of flames stretched the rafters. I looked around and saw the boy huddled up in one of the corner's. The roof started to cave in and I told the boy that he needed to trust me, that I was there to help him."
Hiccup's voice was soft as he stared down at the floor and then took a large swig from the bottle. "But I was too late," he said after he emptied out the bottle, "The roof crashed down on him."
"Hiccup, you can't blame yourself for that," Astrid told him as he looked down at the bottle in his hands.
"Why not," Hiccup said with a small shrug, "I failed, I couldn't save him."
"Everyone makes mistakes," she told him but he shook his head angrily.
"But not like this," he said as became more angry, "Most people don't become more useless after each of their mistakes."
"Hiccup you are not useless," Astrid tried to reassure him but it didn't work well. Hiccup quickly pulled his arm back and hurled the bottle at the wall. The glass shattered upon impact and Astrid flinched slightly. He remained silent as he breathed heavily and he bowed his head. Astrid remained silent as sat at the table, not knowing what to say.
Hiccup slowly turned around and walked back over towards the table. He grabbed the remaining bottle that was on the table and uncorked it.
"Take the bed tonight," he told her in a quiet voice as he took a drink from the bottle.
"Where are you going to be sleeping," she asked as he slowly walked towards the tunnel.
"I don't plan on sleeping," he told her flatly and then walked out of the room. Astrid casted a glance over towards Toothless who was also watching Hiccup with the same sad look. The Night Fury shook his head and then walked over to the same corner he slept in before. Astrid remained in her seat for a few minutes before she got up and looked around for something to pick the glass up with. Luckily, there was a dustpan close by and she grabbed it along with a brush. She swept up the broken glass and set the pan on the table, deciding to deal with the mess later. She sighed as she looked in the direction that Hiccup walked off to, hoping that he wouldn't stick to his word and would get some sleep.
Astrid slowly opened her eyes as she felt the light hit her eyes and she slowly brought the covers over her head. The difference between sleeping on the stone floor and sleeping on a bed definitely was noticeable. A few minutes later she pulled the covers off of her head and she slowly stretched. Astrid looked around and saw that Toothless was still laying in the same corner and Hiccup was nowhere to be seen. She quickly got up and slipped on her shoes after feet touched the cold floor. Astrid started to walk around the tunnels as she searched for Hiccup, starting in the forge. She didn't find him there so she decided to go to the washroom and came across another empty room. Reality sat in on her and she headed down to the cellar where she finally found him. He was lying on the ground and his face was to the ground as she walked into the room. She crouched down next to him and slowly turned him around so that he was looking up at her.
Astrid heard something roll across the ground and she looked over to see an empty bottle rolling away from them. She looked around the room and saw several other bottles and realized that he must have blacked out here.
"Hiccup," she called out to him as she lightly shook his body, but she got no response. She called his name another time, and then another, but got no response from him. She looked around and then back to him before she slapped him across the face, but still he remained responseless. Astrid let out a sigh as she looked around and saw a bucket nearby and an idea popped into her head. She walked over to the bucket and lifted up before carrying back over to Hiccup. "Well here goes nothing," Astrid said to herself as she tilted the bucket down and sent the water splashing down. Hiccup's eyes shot open and he gasped for air after the water hit his face.
Astrid winced slightly as she heard him coughing for air as he slowly sat up.
"What did you do that for," Hiccup asked her in an agitated tone.
"Well you weren't waking up when I said your name or slapped you," Astrid told him. A sad look crossed his face as he realized what that meant. He remained silent as he slowly stood up and braced himself against a barrel. "And what do you think you're doing," Astrid asked him as she watched him.
"What does it look like," Hiccup asked her as he held his side.
"It looks like you're being stupid and trying to do things on your own when you clearly need help," Astrid told him.
"I've lived on my own for the most part, for the past six years," Hiccup told her, "I think I'll be able to take care of myself."
"Be my guest then," Astrid told him as she stepped back and gestured towards the hallway. Hiccup casted her a cold glare and slowly walked out of the room. She watched him move slowly and winced with each step, but he didn't say anything.
He managed to make it out of the room and Astrid sighed as she picked up the bottles and set them inside the bucket. She then set the bucket next to the entrance and turned to walk out of the cellar. As she turned to head back to the main room she saw something crouched down by the floor and quickly realized that it was Hiccup. Astrid quickly rushed to his side and crouched down to see a pained looked on his face.
"Don't start," he said through gritted teeth as he tried to stand up.
"Stop being stubborn and let me help," she told him but he shook his head,
"I can manage just fine," he reassured her. He tried to stand up fully and took a single step before he almost fell again. Luckily, Astrid was there to catch him and she placed a hand on his side, causing him to let out a hiss in pain. He let out a sigh and then slowly draped his arm over Astrid so that she could help him walk. The two managed to get back to the main room without any trouble and Astrid guided him to the bed.
She moved around so that he could sit on the bed and Astrid went to remove his shirt.
"Don't look at me like that," Astrid told him as he raised an eyebrow at her. She gasped when she finally saw his side and saw a burn mark on his side. "Why didn't you tell me about this," she asked as she examined the wound.
"Thought I could take care of it by myself," Hiccup admitted as he watched her.
"Do you have any burn ointment," Astrid asked as she stood up and started to walk around.
"It's in one of the wardrobes," Hiccup told her and she spent the next few minutes searching for any medicine. Once she found a box labeled medicine, Astrid walked back over to Hiccup. "This is going to sting," she told him as she applied some ointment to her finger. She tried her best to not cause him any pain but he still winced as she touched the wound. Once she was done she grabbed a roll of bandages and wrapped it around Hiccup's torso.
He tried to stand up once she was finished but she stopped him, "You are going to rest," she told him. Hiccup hesitated at first but then slowly sat back down and lifted his legs up into the bed. Astrid walked away from the bed and grabbed a bucket and then brought it back to Hiccup. "Just in case you need it," Astrid told him as he looked over at her with a curious look.
"What are you going to do," Hiccup asked her.
"I'm going to clean this place up," she told him and he let out a chuckle as he rested his head on the pillows.
"I guess it could use it," he admitted as he closed his eyes and brought the covers up to his chest. Astrid smiled softly as she watched him and then turned to look around at the room. She let out a sigh when she realized what she was getting herself into but it needed to be done.
For the next few hours Astrid organized all the chests and wardrobes in the main room. Once that was done she went up to the garden and continued her progress on that. After a refreshing shower she walked back into the main room and saw that Hiccup was gripping the bucket and set it down as he saw her. "How's the hangover," she asked as she pulled over a chair and set it down next to the bed. "Not my worst," Hiccup admitted as he sat up in bed. Astrid remained silent as a question came to her mind but she didn't ask it. "You can ask me," Hiccup told her and she looked up to see him looking outside. "Why I drink so much," he added as he glanced back at her, "That's what you want to ask me right." She remained silent as she nodded and he let out a sigh. "Life gets hard and drinking makes it easy," Hiccup told her simply, "And yeah I know it sounds bad."
"But that's all I got to help," he admitted as he looked down at his hands, "You're the first person I've talked to in several consecutive days." Astrid remained silent, not knowing what to say to offer any type of support.
"Well what if I try to help you make life easy," she offered and he looked up at her.
"How do you suggest that," Hiccup asked and Astrid let out a sigh.
"Well to start you let me know what's bothering you and don't hide anything," Astrid started. "And you have to stop drinking and I mean fully stop."
"That's a lot to ask for," Hiccup told her with a doubtful look.
"I know," she told him, "That's why, if you do that, I'll try to see your view on the dragons."
"What do you mean, see my view," Hiccup asked with a raised eyebrow. Astrid let out a sigh and looked down at her hands.
"Well Toothless doesn't seem too bad, so I guess you could be right about the others." A small smile crept onto Hiccup's face as he heard her admit that.
"Is Astrid Hofferson admitting that she could be wrong," Hiccup said with a laugh, "Somebody spread the news."
"Don't push your luck," Astrid warned him as a smile crept onto her face.
"Trust me milady, I won't," he reassured her.
"Milady," Astrid asked with a raised eyebrow and Hiccup shrugged.
"Princess didn't sound right, besides I kinda like milady better."
"I do too," Astrid said with a small smile and nod. "Well I guess we will see how you hold up then won't we," Astrid told him and he smirked.
"I think I'll hold up just fine," he proposed, "I've gone through a lot of hell in my life before. Surely giving up my drinking habits won't hurt me too bad right." "We will see," Astrid told him and she stood up from her chair.
"If you need me I'll be in the garden," she told him and he just nodded. She returned the chair to its original place and then headed off to the garden. She let out a sigh as she thought of what was to come, praying that it won't be that bad.
Ayo, it's me, hopefully you all enjoyed the chapter and quicker update then planned. I was kinda bored all day so I just hopped on my laptop and started typing.
