He watched her. He had always loved to watch her and he still did. Her face was old now, wrinkles everywhere, and the past two years had worn her out, drained her strength, and yet she had clung to life because she knew that he needed her. She was 89 years old but when he looked at her she was still the young Detective he fell in love with.
He reached out his hand. He was so tired and he knew it was time for them. He could tell her to leave now. He could let her go. The hospital staff had managed to place the two of them in one room because their daughter had requested that for her parents.
"They shall be together until the end." She had said goodbye a few hours ago.
And this was it, it was the end, Bobby knew that.
"Alex." He said silently and she opened her eyes.
Their hands found each other.
"You don't have to stay any longer." He whispered.
She frowned, slightly confused. He saw the pain the sickness caused in her eyes.
"It's okay now, honey. You can go. Thank you for all those years for every second, for every fight, for every love-making, for your support, for being the most important reason for me not to give up. Thank you for saving me, for holding for loving me…" he paused to see her smile.
"I Love you." She said. He knew speaking caused her pain.
Bobby reached out for her face and caressed her cheek, "I Love you too. Just go ahead, I'll be with you soon." He promised.
She smiled again and he could see her body relax. Another breath and then the sound from the monitor indicated that her heart had stopped beating. A nurse entered the room quietly. There was no rush, no call for a doctor. They all knew why those two were here. She checked the vitals for his wife and turned the machine off. She didn't ask him how he was, she just left the room.
Bobby smiled sweetly at his wife. He didn't cry because he knew she would be waiting for him beyond the horizon, and she would not have to wait long. His body and his mind were weak.
Only one hour later the nurse returned to turn of the second heart monitor. Both of them were gone now.
I had to choose which chapter to upload first. I choose this one because the other one is Humor and I figured we could use the Humor after the past three chapters. What do you think?
