Nick and Judy were currently on the floor in Nick's apartment. Nick was laying on his back, while Just was resting on her knees. Though it was very unlikely she would ever have to do it, the rabbit insisted on learning how to put Nick in the recovery position. She had both found it in the pamphlet and looked it up on Zoogle.
"Ok, so..." Judy said to herself. "First, I have to bend your arm like this..."
Judy took ahold of Nick's left arm and bent it upwards. Then, grabbed at the side of his torso and rolled him to his side. She bent the other arm and adjusted it so it was under the side of his head. Next, she...
Wait a minute...
Judy grunted and threw her paws up in irritation. She had started the whole thing completely wrong. The right arm was supposed to bend and get tucked underneath his head before she turned him over. Judy both mentally and physically facepalmed.
"Carrots, is this really necessary? I mean it's only-"
"Yes, it is, actually."
"Learning this isn't a requirement, Judy."
"Yes, it is!" Judy suddenly outbursted. "Nick, the nurse told me about it for a reason. It's to make sure your airways stay clear. Do you think he would just tell me something like that for me to not do it?"
Nick stayed silent, not wanting to object. He knew Judy was stressing herself out about this. Maybe, it would've been best if he had stayed at the hospital. Now, it seemed that Judy was going to drive him insane. But, Nick knew it only came from the goodness of her heart. She cared for him, and that made Nick have a warm feeling inside.
"Look, Carrots..." Nick said while sitting up. "I know you're a little stressed right now, and it's partially my fault, but, seriously... You're giving me a headache, and it's not even the first day."
Judy took in a deep breath. She was here to help her friend, not the other way around. She needed to pull herself together. It was just hard knowing that Nick was practically in her complete care, and if something were to happen, it would be her fault. She would never be able to forgive herself.
"Sorry... and no, none of this is your fault, Nick. I just need to..." Judy sighed. "It would make me more comfortable if we practiced this."
Nick have her a reassuring smile. He wrapped an arm around her and brought her close.
"And we will. But after some food, okay? I actually don't think the headache is from you. I was just giving you a hard time."
A couple minutes later, sure enough, Nick was right. After Nick had pricked his finger and tested the blood, it turned out that he was at a 67. The number wasn't terrible, but it certainly wasn't the best one either. Nick got up and grabbed a handful of crackers. He offered one to Judy, but she had politely rejected.
"What's it at now?" Judy asked after about fifteen minutes had passed.
There was a series of clicks, pops, and beeps. Nick held the meter and test strip to the tiny drop off blood on the tip of his finger. After a few seconds of processing, the meter lit up a number on the screen.
"Eighty-two." Nick said while giving a thumbs up.
But, alas, the joy of Nicholas Wilde was shortlived, much to his dismay.
"Eat some more crackers."
"But, eighty-two is actually pretty good, considering the circumstances." Nick argued.
With having an insulin producing tumor in his pancreas, Judy didn't exactly know how fast Nick would drop back down to dangerous levels. She knew that he was supposed to check at least every couple of hours, but if he ate more now, he would have a better reading later, right?
"Two more." Judy said while twiddling two fingers in the air. "On the box, it says each cracker is one and a half grams of carbohydrates. You, sir, have only eaten eight crackers, which means right now you're only at twelve carbs out of the fifteen recommended. Two more crackers will get you to exactly to your fifteen."
Nick chuckled as he reached his arm in the box of crackers.
"Sly bunny."
Nick looked over to the sleeping form of Judy on his couch. Earlier, after Judy had mastered the recovery position, the two had decided to watch a movie. They had even made some popcorn to go with it too reassure that Nick's blood sugar wouldn't get too low. Anyway, somehow, during the film, which was Meowana, (It wasn't Nick's first pick) Judy had fallen asleep.
The fox grabbed the bowl of popcorn that she still had in her paws. He readjusted her blanket so that she was covered all the way to her shoulders. Judy unconsciously took the blanket and pulled it towards herself. Nick smiled and walked away slowly, being careful as to not wake her up.
As Nick was about to enter his room, he heard someone call out to him.
"Check your blood sugar."
Nick's expression dropped, slightly annoyed. Didn't Judy know that she wasn't supposed to wake up? He supposed not... Nick sighed and turned around to see Judy directly behind him. She still had the blanket wrapped around her shoulders and the excess was dragging on the floor.
"Ok, Mom."
Judy smirked at his irritation.
"But, seriously, though. Okay?"
Nick only nodded in agreement. After a while, he turned and opened his bedroom door. After a few steps in, he reached for the lamp at the side of his bed and switched it on. Nick looked back at the rabbit who was standing just outside of his door.
"If you want, you can sleep in here." Nick noticed how her eyes immediately lit up. He decided to tease her a little. "But, hey, if you prefer the couch..."
"No!" Judy blurted.
Nick widened his eyes at how quick she answered. Judy poorly attempted to correct herself from how much excitement she had shown.
"I-I mean... if it's okay with you, I'll stay... in here..."
Hey! Sorry if this is a shorter chapter, but this is all I got. If I continue the story on the rest of this chapter, it would have a weird cut off.
