Blossom was nearly done with her homework on Friday night when her phone rang. She was surprised to see it was Layla's number. She inadvertently sighed before answering.
'Hey, Layla. What's up?'
'Hey, Blossom. Sorry for bothering you so late.'
'Nonsense, it's only 8PM. I wasn't doing anything. How can I help you?'
'The reason for me calling is... do you think I can come by your place before the party tomorrow? We could do each other's make-up?'
'Err...'Blossom hesitated. She was surprised by Layla's boldness, she hadn't had someone over in forever...and they barely knew each other.
'Oh, I see, I understand why you wouldn't be comfortable with it...' Layla started apologizing.
'No, no...I'd like that very much. I'm just not used to having friends over, that's all.
She heard Layla chuckle at the other end of the line.
'I'm not, either. We move so often I barely get to make true friends. But I'm enjoying our time together so far, I want to get to know you better. Don't you?'
Blossom couldn't help but agree.
'I have to warn you, though. I'm not that great at make-up, but my sister Bubbles is She might be willing to help us. '
'Great! So I'll come by around 7 o'clock? Is that ok with you?'
'Sure. I'll be here.' Blossom laughed nervously.
'Ok, see you tomorrow. Can't wait.'
'Bye...' Blossom awkwardly ended the conversation.
''I'll be here' ??What kind of awkward line is that, Blossom? Why are you so weird around her...? God.'
Blossom sighed as she closed her books for the evening. She realized it's probably just nerves since the party was tomorrow. She cringed at the thought of Aidan's party several years ago, the last one she attended.
'I shouldn't have said I'm going tomorrow. I got peer pressured into it...And now this girl's coming over and I can't back out of it...ugh..'
She quickly picked her phone and started scrolling through Instagram to avoid the unpleasant feelings that were bubbling up in her mind. She quickly checked the posts she was tagged in, mostly Powerpuff related.
Blossom scrolling for a while she found herself typing Layla's name in the search bar, they followed each other the day they'd met.
She quickly scrolled though her pictures and stopped on a selfie.
'She's gorgeous and brilliant. And so graceful and affable...I might learn a thing or two from her. I just...need to stop feeling jealous of my friends liking her.'
Blossom sighed, then locked her phone as she went downstairs to join her family for supper.
'I didn't know you're such good friends with her, Blossom!' Bubbles smiled as she dragged her sister to her room.
'We're not THAT good friends. But we're friendly, yes.'
'Huh.' Bubbles shrugged as she opened her comically large wardrobe. 'I was just surprised you're having someone over, that's all.'
Bubbles picked up two dresses: one of them was a short pink sequined one, the other white with a plunging neckline.
'Sooo...I was thinking one of these.'
'Bubbles...no.' Blossom shook her head in horror.
'Come on, this is your come-back into highschool society, Blossom. Taylor said you should 'Go big or go home.''
'You talked to Taylor about me?' Blossom raised an eyebrow in evident displeasure.
'No-no...' Bubbles was obviously flustered. 'She said this as a general advice...for everyone who's coming to the party.'
'Riiight..' Blossom didn't seem convinced. 'Well, I'd rather 'go home' to be honest.'
'But you can't!' Bubbles begged. 'Isn't Layla coming?'
'Yeah, I guess. Only reason I agreed to come to this party, actually.'
The doorbell rang twice.
'Speak of the devil, it's probably her downstairs. Be right back, Bubbles. Maybe you can find something more...decent? '
Bubbles nodded as Blossom made her way down the stairs. She was greeted outside by the ever-graceful Layla.
'Hi, sorry I'm late. Took a while to find your house.'
'Oh, it's ok. We were trying to find a dress for me to wear. Bubbles browsed through my clothes and decided nothing is appropriate for the occasion..'
'Great! Maybe I can help.' Layla gave her a pleasant smile as they made their way back to Bubbles' room.
'I'd like that, maybe you can convince her why a sequined pink dress wouldn't suit me.'
'Are you that sure it wouldn't?' Layla teased her.
'Pretty sure I'd look ridiculous.' Blossom muttered under her breath.
'Let us be the judge of that.'
They found Bubbles holding 4 different dresses, closely examining a baby blue one.
'Oh, hiii..' Bubbles transferred the dresses in her sister's hand. ' You must be Layla, I don't think we properly met. '
Layla warmly shook her hand in response.
'Bubbles, right? I've seen you around school. Nice to meet you.'
The girls chatted for a while, Bubbles asking all about Layla's life in Arizona and the brunette complimenting Bubbles' many clothes and accessories.
'So, Layla, what do you think we should for Blossom? She's sooo afraid of looking sexy, don't you think?'
She laid out the dresses on her bed. Each one was more revealing than the other. Blossom winced when she pictured herself dressed in them.
'Hmmm, I think Blossom should wear something she's comfortable with.'
'I mean, of course you'd say that since you're coming in jeans and a t-shirt!' Bubbles pouted, looking her up and down.
'Oh, you mean these clothes? she pointed down at her attire. 'No, I'm not wearing them.' Layla laughed, pulling out a sleek black dress from her bag. 'I'm wearing this. Can I change with you here? I don't mind it.'
Both nodded as Layla took off her clothes, remaining in her perfectly matched lacy underwear and quickly put on the slinky black dress that closely hugged her curves. Her back was exposed and it was so short Blossom wondered how she'd walk without her underwear showing. Nevertheless, she looked absolutely gorgeous.
'Wow. This dress is AMAZING. It looks fantastic on you!'
Blossom had to agree, she was stunning, albeit scantily clad.
'Thanks!' Layla smiled back. 'Now let's find one for you!'
'If I refuse all of these dresses I'm gonna look like such a prude.' Blossom thought.
It took a while, but they finally settled on a silky red dress, short enough make Blossom uncomfortable at the thought of wearing it. Bubbles chose a navy lace dress for herself, coupled with a matching choker.
They put them on and Blossom was surprised how much she liked her reflection. She wasn't used to wearing such risky clothing, but had to admit she felt attractive, especially wearing the kitten heels her sister gave her.
'Oh, Blossom. This is so great, you look gorgeous! I always wanted to do this with you, this is so fun!' Bubbles beamed at her sister.
'Can I do your make-up?' Bubbles asked, looking for make-up pallettes on her vanity.
'Yeah, sure. Nothing crazy, though, please.
While Bubbles prepped Blossom's face, she hesitantly asked:
'So, Blossom, about tonight's party... You're not going to do anything weird, are you?'
'...Weird? Like what?' Blossom bitingly asked.
'Uhm.. there's going to be alcohol.'
'Yes, I realize that.'
'You're not going to tell anybody, are you?'
Blossom blushed furiously. Now they'd have to explain the whole situation to Layla, she cursed Bubbles for not bringing this up in private. She looked towards Layla, she seemed focused on getting her eyeliner right, clearly trying to mind her business.
'No, I'm not. I'm just going to intervene if I see people being hurt, I promise.'
Bubbles nodded in agreement. She waited for a few seconds before adding:
'Also...the boys are going to be there. All three.'
'Great.' Blossom replied.
'What boys?' Layla asked, her interest suddenly piqued.
'Ah, forgot you're not from around here.' Bubbles answered. ' So, you know we've got super powers, right? 'The Powerpuff Girls''
Layla nodded: 'How could I not? Everyone in America does.'
'Right.' Bubbles replied, slightly uncomfortable with that fact. 'So, there's also three guys like us. Same powers, same everything.'
'Yes, I know that. 'The Rowdyruffs', isn't it? You fought them, right? I heard they gave up crime a few years ago.' Layla replied, still working at her wing.
Blossom scoffed, causing Bubbles to accidentally stab her in the eye with the makeup brush.
'Blossom, stay still! It's gonna look bad if you don't! So, where was I?' Blossom turned towards Layla.
'The Rowdyruffs.'
'Yeah, so, they're coming to the party tonight.'
'Oh, I see. Layla answered. 'Should be interesting.'
'Blossom doesn't like them that much.' Bubbles said, blending Blossom's eyeshadow.
'Why not?' Layla inquired, releasing her hair from the tight ponytail it was in.
'Because I don't trust them. They say they're 'neutral' now, but I'm pretty sure they're still criminals, just not out in the open anymore. '
'What makes you think that?' Layla inquired.
'For once, the seemingly endless supply of money at their disposal. The green one, Butch, destroys some bar almost every week and Brick pays off all the expenses, every time.'
'Brick...? Butch?' Layla looked confused.
'Sorry, you're not that familiar with this. They look similar to us, you might say they're our counterparts. Brick is Blossom's counterpart, Butch BCs and Boomer mine. '
'Oh, so like your evil twins?' Layla seemed amused.
'No, God no.' Blossom looked disgusted at the thought.'
'Evil lovers then? Two halves of one whole, Yin-Yang type of thing?'
Blossom laughed out loud, it was ridiculous to suggest this for anyone who knew both Brick and herself. Bubbles said nothing as she looked around in her lipstick collection.
'Brick, my counterpart, is the most infuriating person you'll ever meet. He's extremely arrogant, obnoxious, stubborn... Everytime we interact my day gets 10 times worse than it was. Actually, I hope you'll get spared of meeting him , we don't want him ruining our night.'
Layla chuckled in response: ' He sounds interesting, you only managed to make me curious. Now I really want to meet Brick to see if you're right about him.'
For some reason, Blossom felt a knot forming in her stomach, and didn't know why. She cleared her voice and continued:
'By all means, go ahead. You'll see how much of an asshole he is. You can't fall for his charms, you're too smart for that."
'Oh...?' Layla raised her brow.
'A lot of girls like them, The Rowdyruffs. They don't even go to our school, but we know many who dated them.' Bubbles softly added.
'Where do they go then?'
'They don't go to school, as far as we know. Brick thinks he's above the public school system.' Blossom responded.
'I kind of see his point.' Layla answered. 'I see why he'd think societal rules don't apply to him .
Blossom promptly turned to her, eyeing her curiously.
'You think he's right?'
'I didn't say that.' Layla calmly responded. 'I said I can see his point. I understand it. All that power must have gone to his head.'
A moment of silence followed as Bubbles finished touching up her sister's makeup.
'Taylor wants to hook up with him tonight.' Bubbles told them and Blossom laughed in response.
'Even I know Taylor's been trying to do that for some time already. With little success. '
'She's really determined this time. Said he's not getting away.' Bubbles thoughtfully said.
'So, he must be good looking then? Aside from the powers? ' Layla interrupted.
Blossom was at a loss for words, the question leaving her confused. Thankfully, Bubbles replied before she had to.
'Yes, he is. He's a tall redhead. His eyes are weird, but most girls like them.'
'Weird..?'
' Yeah, like.. Red. Blood red.'
Blossom vividly remembered their color, having seen them up close in their confrontation the other day.
'Interesting...Is this Brick hard to get?' Layla asked, adjusting her skirt.
'Harder to get than the other Rowdyruffs, apparently. ' Blossom answered, fixing her hair.
'Challenge accepted, then.' Layla cheerily replied.
'What..?' both Powerpuffs asked, mouth agape.
'You don't mind it, do you? It's not like you're enemies.'
Bubbles and Blossom were still confused.
'I want to see if I can seduce him before your friend does. Nothing serious.'
'...but why?' Blossom asked, barely containing her horror.
'I like a challenge. But...' she added
'If you're very uncomfortable with it tell me, please. I wouldn't want to ruin our friendship over this.'
'Brick?? Why Brick? Is she messing with me..?''So, do you guys mind it? It's nothing serious, just a game for tonight.'
Blossom studied Layla's face and could only see good will and vague amusement. There wasn't any hint of ill intent as far as she could tell.
'There isn't any reason for her not hooking up with the Rowdyruffs aside for my personal dislike for them, though. Who am I to tell her not to do it? After all I couldn't stop other girls from my school.'
'I mean, it's a free country, you can do as you please. Just, careful you don't get hurt.'
'That's not an issue.' Layla answered. 'I never do.' Layla enigmatically smiled as she applied red lipstick on her bottom lip.
