Chapter 5: The Colosseum Under the Market
Outside the front gates of Furinkan High, Kasumi waited patiently for Ranma, Akane and Nabiki to emerge from the school building, her hand over heart and breathing heavily. She had woken up earlier from a nap after she had got done with most of the housework and made sure nothing was out of place. Though she felt well rested, Kasumi had gotten one look at the clock and realized that it was almost the end of the school day. She had made a dash towards the front door, only stopping to put on her shoes. She didn't even acknowledge her father's concerns when asked before she left. Within a few minutes, Kasumi had arrived at Furinkan High, just in time to hear the final bell. She stopped to catch her breath and wiped the sweat of her brow, composing herself as she smoothed out the wrinkles on her dress.
'Hopefully Ranma didn't forget to bring what I told him,' Kasumi thought. 'He was resistant about it yesterday.'
Kasumi didn't have to wait for very long as she saw Ranma emerge from the school building along with Akane and Nabiki, his book bag on his back and a few books in his hands. She smiled at first, but her expression quickly turned to that of concern as she saw Ranma looking awkward, his head slightly tilted downward. It didn't help that Akane was looking at him with disgust, which sadly wasn't unusual for her. Nabiki, on the other hand, was trying to hold her laughter in. Her curiosity piqued, Kasumi approached them, wanting to know what had happened.
Ranma, hearing footsteps approaching, looked up and mustered up a smile and with a nervous laugh, greeted, "Hey, Kasumi! Got the books you wanted so we're all set!"
"Ranma, is something the matter?" asked Kasumi.
"Well…," Ranma gulped, looking away.
"Ranma got a little tongue tied with the librarian," Nabiki said with a chuckle.
"And he couldn't stop ogling at her!" Akane added angrily.
"I wasn't ogling her!" Ranma defended himself.
"Well, you weren't exactly pushing her away while she was pressing her chest on your face!" Akane argued.
"Not a bad sight to see, eh Ranma?" Nabiki smirked as she nudged Ranma's ribs.
"You're not helping!" Ranma yelled.
Kasumi's only reaction was to groan as she covered her face with her hand. Shaking her head, Kasumi cleared her throat and got her sisters and Ranma's attention. She mainly did this so there wouldn't be any altercation. Kasumi also made sure to give Ranma a rather playfully disapproving look in his direction and then gave him a smile, which confused the martial artist a bit.
"You'll have to excuse Ms. Mei for her behavior," Kasumi assured Ranma. "She gets like that whenever her latest boyfriend breaks up with her."
"By dressing up in a tight, short skirt with no bra and hitting on a student?" Ranma questioned incredulously.
"Oh, so you did notice, you pervert!" Akane accused.
"Would you lay off!?" Ranma fired back.
"You should have seen him, Kasumi," Nabiki laughed. "The poor boy here was practically speechless! He was acting like the woman was going to eat him!"
"I was not!" Ranma yelled.
"Alright, stop it, all of you!" Kasumi scolded. Seeing that her sisters and Ranma had her attention, she addressed Ranma first, "Ranma...we'll talk about this later. Right now, we have other things that need to be concerned with."
"Oh, alright," Ranma groaned, knowing what was coming. He then smiled and asked, "Mind if I carry you home, ma'am?"
"Of course not, young man," Kasumi responded pleasantly. "But will you manage to carry those books and me at the same time?"
Ranma smiled confidently and handed the books to Kasumi. Seconds later, he scooped her up in a bridal position, took a running start and leapt towards the top of the nearest wall. While Kasumi did gasp in surprise, she calmed herself down once Ranma had a steady footing on the wall. The young man gave Kasumi a reassuring smile while the eldest Tendo sister gave him a small frown.
"A little warning next time!" Kasumi scolded.
"Aw, you worry too much, ma'am," Ranma said.
"Honestly," Kasumi sighed. She then turned her towards her sisters and said, "We'll see you at home, little sisters! Don't dawdle!"
Without another word, Ranma and Kasumi headed back home, the young man effortlessly running on the walls with a bit of speed. Akane and Nabiki stood there, taking in what had happened before them. Nabiki shook her head as she headed out the gate while Akane, frowning, followed her sister's lead.
"Those two are really something," Nabiki commented. "The way I see it, something great must have happened between those two on that karaoke date a few days ago because they got along great before and that hasn't stopped after. Kinda makes me want to know more about what happened that day because those two aren't saying anything."
"He better not have done anything to her," Akane growled.
"Kasumi's a big girl, Akane," Nabiki said. "If anything, I'm sure Ranma didn't do anything she didn't want to."
As the evening approached, Ranma was in Kasumi's room, kneeling on a pillow in front of a low table with Kasumi a few feet in front him. He groaned as he gripped his head, his eyes shut tight as his brain felt like it went through a blender. Try as he might, Ranma couldn't keep a single thought straight as he tried to remember what he did for the past couple of hours. It had gotten to the point where he could feel his head getting pounded like a hammer to an anvil. Ranma had wanted to scream and explode in expletives just so he wouldn't feel the pain his head was going through. In the end, he opened his eyes, though not fully, and settled for just staring at the ceiling, letting out another groan.
'Man, this school stuff really bites,' Ranma thought.
"Ranma, is everything alright?" Kasumi asked, holding a book and pen.
"Yeah, just...so much stuff to remember," Ranma responded, still feeling a headache. "So many facts and numbers...I probably won't be able to sleep tonight trying to remember all that crap."
It had been a few hours since Ranma and Kasumi had arrived home ahead of Akane and Nabiki. As soon as they arrived at the Tendo home, Ranma had asked Kasumi if her window was opened and when she said yes, he made a giant leap towards it, which almost caused her to scream since the window was only slightly opened and the rush towards it was high. Ranma, at the last minute, managed to slide the window open and in no time, he and Kasumi had made it inside the room. Ranma had set Kasumi down on the bed and before he could complement himself on the run, Kasumi stood up and sternly stared at him, her hands on her hips. Ranma could tell she was upset and felt that he overdid it with the leap. He could also tell that she had wanted to tell him off, but she didn't. All he got was a sigh and right then and there, he apologized. After that, Kasumi went downstairs to fetch snacks and drinks while Ranma set up for the study session. What followed was, in Ranma's opinion, an extension of classroom lessons and his head felt like it was about to crack.
"Well, you have to get your grades up," Kasumi pointed out. "Honestly, Ranma. If you hadn't dropped your book bag the other day and spilled all your homework on the floor, I wouldn't have known that you were in dire need of help with your studies. All those wrong answers and that penmanship…"
"Kasumi, I'm a martial artist, not a scholar," Ranma said bluntly. "Besides, pops and I were moving around so much that I didn't last too long in one school to care about my grades that much. Not much interest in it for me."
"Well, since our fathers are so intent in making our marriage happen, it's going to be a while before you get back on the road," Kasumi said calmly. "That means you have to make an effort in doing well in your studies. Besides, you don't want the teachers at Furinkan High to think that you're a meat-headed delinquent, right?"
Ranma had wanted to scoff at what Kasumi had said but he decided not to and looked away with a frown. He didn't want to admit it, but Kasumi had a point. So long as he and his father were staying at the Tendo home, that meant he couldn't slack off on his studies, boring as they may be. Looking back at Kasumi, who was looking expectantly at him, Ranma gave her a smile and folded his arms. In his mind, if Kasumi cared so much about him doing well at school, then the least he could do was do his best.
"Not that I care what a bunch of school teachers think of me, but I really don't want any of them on my ass or beating me over the head with their lessons," Ranma reasoned, which earned a sigh of relief from Kasumi. "I get enough of that from pop every morning and every night. So, yeah. I'll work to get my grades up. Strong in mind as well as strong in body, I always say."
"I'm glad to hear that, Ranma," Kasumi responded, beaming. She then let out a yawn and with half lidded eyes, she said, "We're done for today. We can continue your lesson tomorrow."
"Finally!" Ranma said as he stretched his arms. "About time we got to relax."
Kasumi was about to agree with Ranma until she glanced at the clock. She let out a gasp as she stood up, straightening her dress and saying, "Oh, my! It's already late! I need to prepare dinner for everyone and I haven't decided what to make yet! Oh, where does the time go!? I need see my recipe book and-
"Kasumi, calm down," Ranma said, cutting Kasumi off as he stood. "You look tired and you need to lie on the bed for now. We've been at this whole studying thing for a few hours non stop and I think a few minutes of rest isn't going to kill you. Besides, I'm sure someone can pick up the-"
"Heavens no, Ranma!" Kasumi shouted, which shocked Ranma into silence. Realizing what she just did Kasumi breathed in and out in order to calm down. "Ranma...I understand what you are trying to do, but dinner can't wait. Thank you for your concern, but you, your father and my family need me."
Ranma remained silent as Kasumi went over to her closet and opened it. He became curious as Kasumi knelt down to open a safe. Seconds later, he saw her pull out a notebook. Kasumi stood up and opened it and began flipping through it. Ranma saw the title of the notebook and saw that it was a recipe book. Seeing that Kasumi was already set to her routine regardless of what he said, Ranma approached her, concern still on face.
"At least let me help," Ranma offered.
Kasumi looked up from her notebook and gave Ranma a serene smile. Seeing the young man's genuine expression of concern, Kasumi could only think about how sweet Ranma was for offering to help her in the kitchen. She could understand Ranma's reasons for wanting to help around the house, which ranged from not wanting to seem like a freeloader to just wanting to do his part. Kasumi had insisted to Ranma, time and time again, that he was a guest but it didn't stop him from at least asking.
With an amused look, Kasumi asked, "Ranma, do you even know your around a kitchen and not just the path to the refrigerator to sneak in a little snack?"
"I can get the hang of it," Ranma insisted with a shrug. "Besides, I did some cooking on road. How hard could it be?"
"Ranma, I'll be fine, really," Kasumi assured, her serene smile returning. "It's sweet of you to offer to help, but I think I have enough strength left to tackle the dangers of the kitchen."
To emphasize her point, Kasumi flexed her arms in a show of strength. This got an amused look from Ranma, but she could tell there was a bit of doubt coming from him. She then offered him her recipe notebook, which got Ranma curious.
"If you truly want to help, you can pick what we can have for dinner," Kasumi said.
Ranma took the notebook from Kasumi's hands and flipped through it. As he did, he was amazed at the different kinds of dish recipes contained inside. Ranma's mouth began to water at the choices. After a moment, he stopped at a page and showed it to Kasumi. The young lady took the notebook from his hands. Looking at the recipe, Kasumi smiled and closed the notebook.
"Katsudon it is," Kasumi said with a nod.
"And I'll clean up here," Ranma said as looked at the small trash bin filled snack wrappers, then at the empty drink cans on the table and the books he had brought home from the school library. "Figured since this is mostly my mess, I'll clean it up."
"If you insist," Kasumi sighed as she put her recipe book in the safe.
With that, Kasumi left her room while Ranma stayed behind to clean up.
Ranma breathed a sigh of relief as he came down the stairs. With the exception of the usual morning training session with his father, he had spent most of it inside the guest room studying. As much as he didn't want to give schoolwork a second thought, Ranma did promise Kasumi to make time for it. Since this was the start of the weekend, Ranma had decided to get studying out of the way first and use the rest of the day to train. He placed a hand on his head, feeling another headache coming as he tried not to forget whatever he was studying about. It would seem, at least to Ranma, that practicing martial arts came a little easier than school studies.
Since Ranma had spent most the morning studying, he wondered what everyone in the Tendo home had been doing this whole time. Walking into the family room, Ranma spotted his father and Soun playing shogi, which he paid no mind to, even though the Tendo patriarch was begging for a do over on a bad move. He looked back up the stairs and could only guess what the younger Tendo sisters were doing. He had heard Akane talking on the phone earlier and there wasn't much of a peep coming from Nabiki's room, which suited him just fine as he didn't want to run into either of them. This left Kasumi and Ranma was on his way out of the family room to go look for her.
"If you're looking for Kasumi, she headed to pharmacy not too long ago for headache pills," Genma said, not bothering to look up from the game. "Seems somebody's brain can't take much when it comes to school work."
"And since when did me getting good grades become a priority for you, pop?" asked Ranma with a frown.
"I didn't raise my son to be a dummy, boy," Genma responded sternly. "At least Kasumi is taking the time to learn you the books, so be grateful."
"That's my daughter for you, Saotome," Soun said with pride. He then turned to Ranma and said, "You'll see, son. She'll make a good wife for you."
"I wish you two would lay off of that," Ranma said with exasperation as he walked off. "We're just friends and that's final."
Ranma could only frown as he heard his father and Soun laugh heartily. He was about to head upstairs before he heard a sound coming from his stomach. He blushed at this and made his way to the kitchen. Once inside, Ranma looked around and noted how clean it looked and everything seemed to be in order.
Granted, this wasn't Ranma's first time inside the kitchen as he, as Kasumi pointed out, would sneak in for a snack.
As he walked around, Ranma thought back to his days on the road. Though there were times when he and his father would often stop by local restaurants and food carts to eat, there were times when they were so far from civilization that they had find their own food. There were also times when Ranma had to cook and while his father usually criticized him on how bland the food turned out, it was miles ahead of what he could do, which went from just boiling water for instant noodles or making camp rice. Ranma even recalled making a plate of Okonomiyaki some years ago and while it wasn't perfect, it was still eatable. He wasn't what one would call a world class chef, but at least he had the basics down.
Ranma thought it would only be right to help out since Kasumi has worked hard to make him feel welcome, even helping him out with his studies. Still, cooking on the road was different than cooking in the kitchen and he had to keep that in mind.
With a determined smile and an air of confidence, Ranma cracked his fingers and thought, 'Aw, how hard could it be?'
"And just what do you think you're doing!?" a stern voice asked, causing Ranma to stiffen.
Ranma turned around and saw that Akane was there, frowning at him with her hands on her hips. Ranma groaned, thinking on how much he didn't want to deal with her right now.
"Sneaking in a snack before lunch, huh?" Akane accused Ranma. "You really have no shame, don't you!? Even after Kasumi served you a double helping at breakfast! How can you be inconsiderate!? And you dare call yourself Kasumi's fiancee!?"
"Lay off, Akane," Ranma responded as calmly as he could. "I just thought I would make something for myself and Kasumi is all."
"You, actually being useful around the kitchen!?" Akane scoffed.
"Hey, I'm a fast learner, alright!?" Ranma defended. "I just want to do this because Kasumi has done nothing but make me feel welcome around here!"
"Yeah, right," Akane said doubtfully. "You look like the kind of guy who expects a girl to wait on you, hand and foot."
Akane's remark was enough to get Ranma's blood boiling. All he could think of was how this girl in front of him, who had nothing but contempt for him ever since he and his father arrived at the Tendo home, dared to question his integrity and intentions. It wasn't his choice to come here in the first place, but meeting Kasumi and getting to know her was the best thing that has happened to him a long time. He had gained a friend and he would never think of belittling Kasumi or treat her like a servant. In Ranma's mind, Kasumi deserved so much better because she sacrificed a lot for her family. As much as he wanted to verbally tear into Akane, Ranma managed to calm himself down. He didn't want to give Akane the satisfaction that he was getting to him.
"Think what you want, Akane," Ranma said. "But just so you know, I would rather dive into a dry spring filled with rocks and spikes before I hurt your big sister. That's why I want to do something for her."
"Oh, really," Akane smirked. "Do you even know where to start? In fact, do you even know what you want to make for Kasumi? How about this, Mr. Heir to the Saotome School: do you even know how to use the kitchen properly?"
"I think I can manage," Ranma responded, folding his arms
"You think you can manage," Akane said, shaking her head. "You boys are all alike, you know that? Thinking you know everything."
Ranma gave Akane an annoyed look, narrowing his eyes.
"You know what, I'm feeling generous today," Akane said with confidence. She walked over to the refrigerator and took out random ingredients and placed them on the counter. "I'm going to show you how to make a simple Beef Udon dish. I'll even use my own special recipe for it."
"Uh, do you even need all this stuff for that?" Ranma asked as he eyed the ingredients on the counter with an raised eyebrow.
"Like I said, it's my own special recipe," Akane reiterated. "Watch and learn. I'm going to make something you have never seen before."
It wasn't long after Kasumi had left the pharmacy. Aside from getting headache medicine for Ranma, she also bought a few snacks for him and for her sisters. As she walked, she thought about how much Ranma was faring in his studies. Before she left the Tendo home, Kasumi did catch Ranma studying and was glad that he was trying to take his school work seriously. In the back of her mind, she knew her friend would rather do something else, like getting in more training time in the dojo. Kasumi shrugged at this and thought about what Ranma had said when he wanted to help her in the kitchen, about him being a quick learner. She smiled, knowing that if Ranma applied himself, he would have no trouble with school and the teachers won't be all over him.
'I wonder if I should reward Ranma for a job well done,' Kasumi thought. 'I could make him any meal he wants or maybe suggest a movie...or maybe…'
An image of her kissing Ranma on the cheek made Kasumi giggle.
'No, that's for when he's going to have a big test,' Kasumi thought, placing a hand on her cheek. 'Ms. Tendo, you are so naughty.'
Kasumi's thoughts were interrupted when she smelled something burning close by. As she walked close to the Tendo home, her eyes widened as she realized that the burning smell was coming from her home. She started to run towards the house and was finally able to distinguish the smell as being burning food. Kasumi made her way inside and was about to enter the kitchen when an explosion occurred that rocked the whole house. This caught the attention of everyone else in the home as Nabiki, Genma, Soun and finally, Kasumi peared inside the kitchen as the smoke subsided from the explosion. They could see Akane, in the middle of the kitchen, covered in soot with a ladle in hand and the contents of a pot spilled on the kitchen floor, with said pot heavily damaged. As for the kitchen itself, it was a mess with some pots and pans on the floor, broken dishes, and the walls covered in marks. To top it all off, Ranma's body was planted on one of the walls, front first. He didn't last there for long as he fell to the floor, letting out a pained groan. Kasumi couldn't find the words for what had happened and given the state of the kitchen, she was fighting the urge to cry.
"Well...that explains a few things," Nabiki spoke, eyeing a rather awkward Akane.
"Young lady, what is the meaning of this!?" Soun shouted.
"Um...well...I...uh…," Akane said, trying to get out an explanation.
"My kitchen...my beautiful kitchen," Kasumi spoke, her voice breaking. She walked over to Akane and swiped away the ladle she was holding. "Akane, what have I told you about not using the kitchen unless supervised!? You know you can't handle this by yourself! What were you thinking!?"
"But Kasumi, I-" Akane tried to explain.
"No buts, Akane!" Kasumi scolded. "Now get the cleaning supplies! You are going to clean this place up and I don't want to see any burn marks when you're done!"
Without another word, Akane walked away with a sad expression, her head tilted forward.
Kasumi turned her attention to the fallen Ranma. She made her way to him and knelt down beside him. Kasumi inspected Ranma to see if he was harmed and while she did see bruises on his face as well as his clothes being damaged, he was otherwise okay. Dazed, but okay. As soon as Ranma shook his head, Kasumi helped him get up. While she was relieved that Ranma was fine, she still had some questions.
"Ugh...what happened?" Ranma groaned, gripping his head.
"You just learned one of the rules of the house, Ranma-baby," Nabiki said flatly. "Don't ever let Akane near the kitchen. Your life may depend on it."
"My youngest daughter...is not well versed in the ways of culinary arts," Soun said with disappointment.
"That's putting it mildly," Genma said as he surveyed the damage.
"Ranma...what happened here?" asked Kasumi. "Why was Akane cooking? For that matter, what were you doing here? Don't tell me you were trying to help Akane with...whatever it was she was doing here."
Ranma looked at the damage that was done in the kitchen. From the mess on the floor to the burnt marks on the walls, he took everything in. Ranma looked down and frowned before he turned his attention to Kasumi. Seeing her so concerned, he couldn't help but look guilty. Ranma turned away, which got Kasumi curious.
"This is all my fault," Ranma confessed. "If I hadn't gotten the idea of surprising you, none of this would have ever happened."
"What do you mean?" Kasumi asked more curiously.
"I...I wanted to make something for us, okay," Ranma responded. "You know...just to thank you for all you've done for me. I didn't think Akane would come in and...do all this. I tried to stop her, but she threw me to the wall. Then everything went to hell."
"Ranma, no," Kasumi said, shaking her head. "This wasn't your fault and I believe you when you say that you tried to stop Akane. I appreciate what you tried to do."
Ranma breathed a sigh of relief, but when he saw that Kasumi's expression turned serious, he felt a sense of dread.
"But now you see why I asked if you knew your way around the kitchen," Kasumi said, indicating the state of the kitchen. "I can't have someone who doesn't know what they are doing in here, regardless of good intentions."
Knowing that Kasumi was right, Ranma nodded and kept silent as he didn't want to say anything stupid.
Letting out a breath and going over to pick up the pot, Kasumi spoke with a saddened voice, "I'll see what was lost here and make a list on what needs to be bought. I'll be busy helping Akane clean, so Ranma, I need you to go to the market."
"Right," Ranma said simply.
"To be fair, I don't think you would have messed up the kitchen too much, Ranma-baby," Nabiki laughed. "Well...not at this level, anyway."
'Thanks for the vote of confidence,' thought Ranma, scowling at Nabiki.
Not much later, Ranma was walking towards the market with two grocery tote bags and a list of things to buy. Looking over the list, he remembered how much was lost in Akane's kitchen debacle that wasn't just limited to food, but also kitchenware. Kasumi had instructed him before leaving to get what he could with the money she gave him and leave what he couldn't buy for some other time. Ranma sighed as he continued to walk. While he felt that the incident wasn't his fault, he still blamed himself because he had the idea of surprising Kasumi with a meal, only for Akane to catch him and it all went to hell.
'So much for showing off my skills,' Ranma thought sadly. 'Guess I gotta prioritize on what's needed the most, so-
Ranma's thoughts were interrupted when he felt a squirt of water hit his face. The transformation was instant and he turned into a girl. After wiping off the water from her face, Ranma saw a couple of children, two boys in fact, chasing each other with water pistols all the while laughing. Ranma growled at this and glared at the two boys angrily.
"Watch where you're shooting those things, you darned kids!" Ranma yelled at the two boys.
The two boys looked back at Ranma and both stuck their tongues while pulling their lower eyelids before running off, laughing. She could only growl in indignation before stomping away with a huge scowl on her face.
'Stupid water, stupid curse,' Ranma thought, fuming. 'Not like my day couldn't possibly get any-
"Ranma Darling!" a voice called to Ranma.
'I really shouldn't tempt fate like that,' thought Ranma with dread.
When she looked back, Ranma spotted a familiar looking Rolls Royce limo drive up next to her. From the passenger window, Kodachi's head popped up. From what Ranma could tell, the Kuno heiress was practically beaming. In no time at all, Sasuke stepped out from the driver's seat and opened the door for Kodachi. She stepped off and composed herself before the boy turned girl, trying to give an air of grace and sophistication.
"It would seem that fate has brought us together again, Ranma darling," Kodachi said with a smirk.
"Yeah, fate has a sick sense of humor," Ranma said bluntly. "I ain't got time to deal with you, Ms. Kuno. I got errands to run."
"Must you be so cruel and cold to me, Ranma darling?" Kodachi pouted, her eyes shimmering. She then continued in a melodramatic tone, "To think that the heiress of the house of Kuno would be made to suffer such indignity. Cruelty, thy name is Ranma Saotome."
"What do you want, Ms. Kuno?" Ranma asked, annoyed and with narrowed eyes.
"Oh, just the pleasure of your company, Ranma darling and please, call me Kodachi," Kodachi responded with a smile. "It just so happens that I was on my way to the Culinary Institute Market where I usually sample Chef Yutaka Rochelle's latest kitchen creations at his restaurant. It is usually a lonely affair for me, but seeing that you are here...we can make a date out of it."
"Forget it," responded Ranma as she turned around to leave. "I need to get to the market and I'm on a budget, so if you'll excuse me..."
'Must this handsome stallion be so stubborn?' Kodachi thought with a frown. Her expression turned pleasant again as she said, "A budget, you say? Don't tell me that you are settling to buy low grade products just because they are affordable."
Ranma stopped and turned around to face Kodachi, a frown adorning her face. It was taking all her willpower not to verbally tear into the Kuno heiress. Considering how her day had turned out, Ranma didn't want to deal with the girl as she was turning out to be a pest. Ranma closed her eyes and breathed in and out in an effort to calm herself. As much as she didn't particularly like this Kodachi girl, Ranma didn't want to start something with her, make her mad or make her cry. She opened her eyes and faced her again, giving the girl an even look.
"Listen, Kodachi," Ranma began. "Not that it's any of your business, but Kasumi is counting me because things got messed up the kitchen and its kinda my fault. The Tendos lost some things they need right now, but I can only afford a bit with the money I was loaned. Again, if you'll excuse me…"
As Ranma turned to leave, Kodachi frowned again, thinking about what to do next. It only took her seconds to come up with something as her expression changed to that of smirk.
"Ranma darling...what would you say if I told you that you can get everything you need at no monetary cost?" Kodachi asked.
Stopping in her tracks, Ranma turned around and faced Kodachi, looking at her with suspicion. It was obvious that this girl wanted something from her in exchange for her generosity and she really didn't want to give in to whatever demands she may have had in mind. Given how Kodachi behaved towards her and Kasumi, Ranma was reluctant to hear what this girl had in mind.
Despite her misgivings, Ranma thought of her current situation. She was given little money to replace what was ruined in the Tendo kitchen and she wanted to help Kasumi out of this bind. Kodachi's offer sounded tempting and high grade products at no cost was something he could take advantage of. Everything that was lost would be replaced. Still, Ranma frowned, thinking of the price she had to pay later on.
"What's your game, Kodachi?" Ranma asked calmly.
"My game, Ranma darling, is to offer a helping hand to a gentleman in distress," Kodachi responded. "Or given your current state, a fiery haired damsel in distress."
"Don't remind me," Ranma responded with a frown. Letting out a sigh, Ranma said, "No funny stuff, Kodachi."
"Trust me, Ranma darling...my intentions are always serious," Kodachi stated, her smile growing wider.
Sometime later, Ranma found herself inside the Culinary Institute Market. When she arrived moments earlier, Ranma was impressed by the size of the building, which looked about five stories tall but covered an entire city block. Once inside, however, Ranma felt overwhelmed as far as the eye could see. She saw everything that she could ask for, from various vegetables, all types of meats and kitchen appliances and all other things that could complete a kitchen. The place was practically a warehouse and everything looked organized. Ranma even saw some of the employees serve samples to the customers and it reminded him that she was a bit hungry. She also noticed that there were several restaurants on the second floor and they looked pretty fancy, a far cry from all the fast food joints and food carts that she and her father frequented on the road. Ranma was speechless, seeing that the Culinary Institute Market was basically food heaven.
Beside Ranma was Kodachi, who looked onto him with a smirk. She could tell that the object of her affections was impressed with the market and felt that he will never look at other markets the same way ever again. Kodachi felt pleased with herself as she thought that this was a necessary step to winning Ranma's heart. She began to think of other places he could take him, like various spots in Tokyo that ranged from the theater, a grand ball room for dancing or even a romantic cruise. Kodachi also began to envision how the night would end with her lying on her bed and Ranma, in his male form, ravishing her, telling her how much she loved her, that no other woman could compare. Kodachi giggled, blushing furiously at where her thoughts took her. Thinking back, she couldn't remember any boy that had this much effect on her other than Ranma.
Shaking her head, Kodachi turned her attention to Sasuke, who was pushing a shopping cart.
"Sasuke, I want you to assist Ranma darling with whatever he needs," Kodachi ordered. "Once he is done, report back to me. You know where I'll be."
"As you wish, mistress Kodachi," Sasuke acknowledged with a bow.
Kodachi took her leave with a giddy expression on her face, leaving a suspicious Ranma and Sasuke behind. With the Kuno heiress gone, Ranma looked over the shopping list and then around the market. Having a destination in mind, Ranma nodded as she began to walk with Sasuke not far behind.
"You won't be disappointed with this market, Mr. Saotome," Sasuke said pleasantly as he pushed the shopping cart. "Mistress Kodachi is a frequent shopper here and she is always satisfied by the end of shopping day here. She's being quite generous with you in using her credit. Feel free to use it however you wish."
"I'm going to regret this," Ranma muttered. "That Kodachi will want something from me in exchange for this generosity and I don't know if I should pay it."
"Well, you're not wrong about that," Sasuke agreed, feeling that Ranma isn't exactly happy with the situation. "Mistress Kodachi has taken a liking to you, despite a certain...condition that you have. You are everything she sees in the perfect man and I feel she will do anything to gain your attention. Like Master Tatewaki, Mistress Kodachi can be quite persistent."
"Oh, joy," Ranma responded sarcastically. "Guess she's one of those rich girls that always gets what she wants and bawls like a baby when one of her presents isn't a pony."
"Again, you're not wrong," Sasuke admitted. "Though I think she would want a stallion like yourself rather than a tiny equine, Mr. Saotome."
Ranma could only growl in frustration as she placed a hand over her face.
Sasuke's eyes brightened in wonder as he asked, "By the way, this engagement you have with one Kasumi Tendo...considering how steadfastly you are refusing Mistress Kodachi's advances, I can assume that things are serious between you two?"
"That's none of your business, little man!" Ranma responded angrily, turning around and facing Sasuke. "Last thing I need is you tattling to Kodachi about what is going on and I definitely don't want to trouble Kasumi anymore than I already am!"
"Well, I am a ninja," Sasuke pointed out rather timidly. "Gathering information is part of my repertoire and I can't let the mistress down. Plus, she did promise a bonus for me for a job well done."
"You want a bonus, ninja?" Ranma asked as she tore up half the shopping list and handed it to Sasuke. "Help me get those items on the list. There may be a good tip for you if I like what you picked."
"Oh, happy day!" Sasuku exclaimed happily. "Thank you, Mr. Saotome! The mistress will surely be pleased with me! Oh, you won't regret this!"
With a wide grin, Sasuke left, skipping happily with the shopping cart and leaving Ranma alone. The young lady sighed and moved along, heading for the produce section of the market. Upon viewing the quality of the vegetables the market had to offer, Ranma had to admit that they were leagues better than the markets she usually went to with Kasumi these past few days. Ranma did cringe when she eyed the high prices said products had and thought back to what Sasuke said earlier in taking advantage of Kodachi's "generosity". She shrugged and continued to look over the vegetables to see which were the best ones to get.
"Um, excuse me, miss," a voice spoke.
Ranma looked up and saw a teenage boy dressed long sleeve dress shirt, blue apron and red bowtie. He was also holding up a sample plate with chocolates and was standing rather stiff, though Ranma could tell the boy was actually nervous.
"Yeah, can I help you?" Ranma asked, an eyebrow raised.
"Oh, I was wondering if...you could sample the market's finest chocolates," the boy responded as he offered the plate to Ranma.
"Uh, sure," Ranma said as she took one of the chocolates and popped it into his mouth. After a few seconds, Ranma said, "Not bad."
"Willyougooutwithme!?" the boy blurted out.
"What?" Ranma responded flatly.
"Hey, no fair!" another voice shouted.
Ranma turned around and saw another teenage boy approaching with a plate of cubed cheese. Not only that, but there were other boys behind him with sample plates and they were all wearing eager and desperate expressions on their faces. Ranma's eyes widened as she could sense that her situation was going to become dangerous.
"Won't you sample the Monterey Jack, miss!?" the boy carrying the cheese asked.
"No way, man! The lady wants some ice cream pops!" another boy shouted.
"The lady wants the finest in dry meats!" another boy shouted as he shoved the plate right in Ranma's face.
"She wants to sample the kielbasa, guys!" one more boy shouted.
"Will you all just leave me alone!?" a frustrated Ranma shouted at the top of her lungs, which echoed throughout the market.
Upon entering the kitchen, Kasumi surveyed the area with an observent eye. From what she could see, every stain that adorned the vicinity earlier after the explosion had been cleaned and the wasted food had been thrown out. Satisfied that everything looked to be in order and that Akane had done a thorough job, Kasumi went over to the refrigerator and opened it. She let out a disappointed sigh and was reminded that some of the contents of the refrigerator were lost in the explosion and closed the door. She went to the pantry and took out a few packets of instant noodles and then went to fetch the pot and fill it with water. Kasumi then went to get a few plates for herself and the rest of family and guests.
'Looks like only ramen and boiled eggs for lunch,' Kasumi thought as she placed the pot on top of the stove.
"You don't waste any time, daughter," Soun said as he entered the kitchen.
"Father, it is already late and I need to get started," Kasumi answered. "Lunch won't be much and hopefully, with what Ranma can get at the market, we can have a more fulfilling dinner. So I can't waste any time and Ranma will be home soon with the groceries."
"If you say so," Soun shrugged as he observed Kasumi working on getting the water boiling. "Perhaps I can help with something, Kasumi. Maybe provide some spices or suggest something to go with the noodles."
"Father, I'll be fine," Kasumi assured her father. "It's just instant noodles, boiled eggs and what is left of the vegetables that Akane didn't ruin. Honestly, you are starting to sound just like Ranma."
"Well, obviously the lad wants to help you," Soun said as he smiled. "That or maybe he's taken a shine to you and just wants an excuse to get closer to his new bride. Such a roguish young man Ranma is. Perhaps I should keep an eye on him."
"Father, Ranma feels he's being a burden and wants to do more around the house," Kasumi explained as she turned around to face Soun. "I know he means well, but he's a guest and I don't want him to trouble himself. Besides, Ranma has his studies and his martial arts training, so...he really shouldn't be too concerned about my welfare. I'm a grown woman and that's that."
"And a fine woman you have grown to be, my daughter," Soun complimented genuinely. "Still, I can see why Ranma's concerned. Not only are you doing extra work now because we have two more mouths to feed but you are helping Ranma in his studies. The lad just wants to return the favor and help you out."
"I know, father, but-"
"And he is helping out right now with groceries as we speak."
As much as she wanted to argue, Kasumi had to agree that her father had a point. She had been taking a bit more responsibility with the Saotomes around and she has been helping Ranma with his studies on top of that. Kasumi could only think with a small smile at how sweet the young man was trying to be by offering to help.
'Well, it would be rude to deny help from an able young man,' Kasumi thought deeply. She then turned her attention back to Soun and said, "I'll consider it, father."
"Oh, you do your father proud, Kasumi!" Soun cried tearfully. "The schools will be united in no time!"
"Father!" Kasumi protested.
On the restaurant floor of the Culinary Market, specifically at "A Taste of Rochelle", Kodachi was busy eating and enjoying a simple Parisian Flan with a side of assorted fruit and a drink. While the establishment had the look of a simple diner, complete with booths and a bar, the ambiance was very high class with assorted paintings on the walls, well dressed waiters and an accordion player playing nearby for all the patrons. Kodachi herself sat at one of the booths, taking in the atmosphere of the restaurant, listening to the music as she enjoyed her meal. She sighed as she looked out the window, seeing the people pass by.
As much she was enjoying herself, Kodachi couldn't help but look across the table and see an empty booth. She pouted, thinking of Ranma and how much she wanted to enjoy more of his company, had it not been for his errand for the Tendo family. She thought back to when he first met him, the match between him and her brother, Tatewaki. To her, Ranma looked like the perfect man and seeing him fight just took her breath away. Seeing him best her brother was something she would always remember fondly. Kodachi felt that in her heart of hearts that Ranma belonged to her and no girl, not even that fiancee he had, could compare to herself in class, refinement and beauty.
'That curse is something to get used to,' thought Kodachi as she took another bite of her flan. 'Still, something like that could be an advantage for me. I could still persuade Ranma darling to attend St. Hebereke with me as a girl and maybe share a private moment with hot water involved. Or maybe I could teach him about the female body and where to touch to make a girl scream...ooh, Kodachi...so naughty!'
"I take it that you are enjoying the flan, Ms. Kuno," a pleasant voice said.
When Kodachi looked up, she smiled politely at who it was. It was a man with slicked back grey hair with a mustache that had a bit of a belly on him. He wore a white chef's uniform complete with a tall toque on his head. Around his neck was also a neckerchief that had the colors of the french flag. The man's expression was filled with confidence that Kodachi could see, as if what he had just said about the flan was fact and not a boast. To the Kuno heiress, it was always an honor to see this chef, even if it was rare to see him in person.
"Chef Yutaka Rochelle," Kodachi greeted. "Once again, your desserts exceed expectations."
"Only the best for such a fine young lady," Yutaka complinted, bowing.
"You flatter me," Kodachi said, trying to sound modest. "But I can't deny that I work hard for my looks, so thanks all the same."
"So, what brings you to my humble establishment, if I may be so bold?" asked Yutaka.
"Other than coming to your fine establishment?" Kodachi responded. "I had some shopping to do. This time, I invited a friend who was in a bit of a bind, monetarily speaking. She's down at the market right now picking out things she needs for the family, all on my credit."
"How charitable," Yutaka said approvingly. "I doubt your friend will look at other markets the same way after seeing the wares here."
"Yes, she will be positively spoiled," Kodachi agreed with a smirk.
"By the way, I noticed that you were quite happy as I was coming to your table," Yutaka inquired. "May ask why, or is this something private? If it is, I humbly apoligize for my nosiness."
"It just so happens that I met the man of my dreams," Kodachi blushed as she swooned. "Ooh, he's just so perfect, chef. Well built, a strong fighter and he bested my brother in combat. What's not to like?"
"I have to say I'm surprised, Ms. Kuno," Yutaka said, though he regretted saying them when Kodachi narrowed her eyes at him. Not wanting to anger his customer, Yutaka stammered, "N-not that y-you would have a hard time finding a man. But whenever you have your victory parties at my main restaurant, you would speak of boys not measuring up to your subordinates, even belittling the boys they are dating."
"That's because no man is like the one I met, chef Yutaka," Kodachi stated. "Trust me when I say that he shall soon be mine because I, Kodachi Kuno, says so."
"Mistress Kuno," a voice called out.
Kodachi's attention turned to the little ninja that was approaching her table. He gave her a salute and she returned it with an even expression.
"Begging your pardon, mistress, but Ranma has finished her errands and is making a line for purchase," Sasuke said. "Your errands have also been finished as well."
"Very well, Sasuke," Kodachi said as she got up from her table and faced Yutaka. "Thank you for the wonderful meal, chef. It is always a pleasure eating at your establishments."
"The pleasure is all mine, Ms. Kuno," Yutaka said, bowing.
As she was about to leave, Kodachi brightened and faced Yutaka again with an eager expression.
"Chef, if you are here at the market, then that must mean…," Kodachi said as her excitement grew. "Oh, please tell me you are to be in Culinary Combat today! I can't miss that for the world!"
"Sadly, no," Yutaka responded, earning a disappointed look from Kodachi. "I and my Culinary Combat cohorts are witnessing chef Tadamichi's retirement match. After this, he'll be devoting his time managing his restaurants. You are welcome to attend all the same, Ms. Kuno."
"Oh, I will," Kodachi said with a nod. She smirked as a thought came to her, 'And I know the perfect company to watch it with me.'
An annoyed and unamused Ranma walked towards the elevator with a broom in hand. For the aquatransexual, it had been an eventful time trying to shop around the market since everywhere she went there was always some idiot sampler boy trying to either ask her out on a date or just trying to charm his way into her chest. It had gotten so bad that the sampler boys had abandoned their stations just to stalk her. Rather than complain to the manager, though, Ranma had decided to fend them off with a broom she found in housewares. After a few minutes, she had finally managed to find everything on her part of the list and with Sasuke's help, managed to complete her shopping trip.
Ranma was relieved as she was about to make her way toward the register when Sasuke informed her that Kodachi wanted to meet her at the elevator and that he would take care of the groceries. While still remaining suspicious, Ranma made her way towards the elevator and saw that Kodachi was there, waiting for her. She narrowed her eyes at her as she continued to walk.
"Ranma darling...what is with the broom?" Kodachi asked curiously.
"Had some trouble with the employees," Ranma responded flatly. "Seriously, they are an embarrassment to men everywhere."
"Well, with a honey of a body like that, you are bound to attract a few flies," Kodachi pointed out as she looked Ranma over.
"Can you just tell why you wanted me here?" asked Ranma, annoyed and wanting to change the subject.
"I wanted to invite you to the main attraction of the Culinary Institute Market," Kodachi responded as she pushed the elevator button. "It just so happens that they are having a special match to honor one of the champions of the Culinary Institute. Oh, you must see it, Ranma darling! Truly a spectacle of the art of cooking!"
"Kodachi, I only came here to shop, not to indulge you," Ranma said, his annoyance growing.
"Oh, but you must, Ranma darling!" Kodachi pleaded. "In fact, Chef Tadamichi has an interesting technique that can boost your martial arts abilities to the likes you've never experienced before."
"A chef has a technique that can be useful to a martial artist," Ranma said doubtfully.
"Seeing is believing, Ranma darling," Kodachi affirmed with a smile.
"I should go," Ranma said, turning away.
"At least stay long enough to see it," Kodachi pleaded again. "The Tendos won't miss you much, I promise."
While she really doubted Kodachi's word about what she was saying, Ranma knew that the Kuno heiress was going to pester him until she got her way. Plus, in the back of her mind, Kodachi may go back on her word and could be forced to pay for all the expensive products from the store, so it was no use angering her. Ranma already had a nuisance in Tatewaki Kuno and really didn't need Kodachi to be a headache, either.
With a growl, Ranma responded, "Fine, I'll stay long enough to see it."
"You won't regret it, my darling," Kodachi cheered. "The Culinary Colosseum awaits us! Allons-y!"
'I keep digging myself deeper with this girl,' Ranma thought with frustration.
To say that Ranma was impressed with the colosseum would be an understatement. From what she could gather, she and Kodachi traveled a few floors down to get to this place and after checking in with the receptionist, they went through the door that led to the colosseum. While by no means the size of a sports arena, the area did feel like one as the design felt circular with many seats surrounding a concrete area, all filled with people in suits and gowns. The area itself had two opposing kitchens, each with their own open cooking stations, various vegetables, cooking oils, refrigerators, ice cream makers, sinks and other equipment a chef may need.
What Ranma also noticed was an altar in the middle of the two opposing kitchens. He noted that it was also covered in a cloth and Ranma was a bit curious about what was underneath.
"Magnificent," Kodachi said. "Never has there ever been a place where the best of best chefs battle to be culinary kings. I try to make it to every battle just to see the titans of taste that represent the Culinary Institute."
"All this just to watch two people cook," Ranma said with a bit of fascination.
"We should take our seats, darling," Kodachi reminded. "The head of the Culinary Council is about to make her presence known."
Ranma and Kodachi made their way to the front row and took their seats. Just as they did so, the lights around the colosseum dimmed and a spotlight shined on twin doors on the far end of the colosseum with two fancy looking guards at the ready.
There was then the sound of trumpets blaring on the sound speakers that reverated around the colosseum and the crowd clapped in approval. The two guards opened the doors and out came a short haired blonde woman, statuesque and wearing a royal blue high slit dress that sparkled. She also wore blue gloves that extended to her elbows. The way the woman walked to the center of the colosseum was both alluring and commanding as she swayed her hips from left to right while having one hand her hip and waving to the crowd with the other, a confident smile adorning her lips. When she arrived at the center, she picked up a small red chili pepper and took a whole bite. She chewed it and the pepper slipped down her throat. Her eyes shut as she took in the taste and seconds later, her eyes opened and she let out a laugh that could be heard throughout the stadium.
The woman ceased her laughter and bellowed to the crowd, "My name is Amane Hikawa! As head of the Culinary Institute, I welcome you...to the Culinary Colosseum!"
The crowd cheered and applauded in anticipation for the upcoming event. Ranma, on the other hand, was stunned on how into it this crowd was for what was to come. Not only that, she was very impressed at how this Amane woman just downed a pepper without flinching. When she watched her coming down the center of the colosseum, Ranma could tell she displayed a high level of confidence, but she figured she must have had a strong will to take the heat of the pepper.
"I've tried one of those peppers once...they were not fun," Ranma said, still stunned. "And she just ate one like nothing."
"It's her way of showing off, Ranma darling," Kodachi said. "Legend has it that Lady Amane has eaten the hottest peppers in the world since she was a child. Truly, her will is strong to endure such heat."
The cheers and applause of adulation settled when Amane made a gesture to the crowd. Her face became a bit more saddened as she looked around the colosseum.
"Today is somber day here at our humble colosseum," Amane addressed the people. "We are gathered today to witness the final match of one of our champions, one Toshihiro Tadamichi. He has graced this arena of culinary combat ever since my father, Ohta Hikawa, chose him to represent the finest in Japanese cuisine. Not only that, he has competed without the aid of assistants and won many battles here. But before we present our champion one last time, let us present the one who will have the honor of challenging him in his last battle. He is the head chef of Tadamichi Tokyo and one of many of Chef Tadamichi's disciples...Kobe Nakamura!"
Dramatic music played over the sound speakers as the guards opened the doors again. Out came a man dressed in white coat, white cap and black pants. The man, Kobe, walked with determination, like a fighter who was serious about what was about to transpire in this arena. When reached the center of the colosseum, Kobe bowed to Amane, which she returned in kind.
"Welcome, chef," Amane greeted.
"I'm honored to be here, Lady Hikawa," Kobe responded.
"It must be pretty intimidating going up against your master," Amane said.
"It is...but I must show him that he chose well in making me head chef of Tadamichi Tokyo," Kobe said with determination.
"Very well," Amane said as she turned around with a flourish. "Then let us present for one last time...the one man kitchen team of Japanese cuisine! Culinary Champion...Toshihiro Tadamichi!"
A triumphant symphony blared throughout the colosseum speakers as the doors opened again. An old man dressed in a black chef's coat with a matching black cap and pants emerged. Toshihiro Tadamichi marched towards the center with a stern expression. As he did, he looked over the crowd that was cheering for him and gave them a wave, acknowledging the praise he was being given. When he arrived at the center, Toshihiro gave a respectful bow to Amane, which she returned. He then made his way towards his side of the kitchen while Kobe did the same with two assistants flanking him.
"He doesn't look like much," Ranma commented.
"Just you wait, my darling," Kodachi said as she placed her hand on Ranma's thigh. "You'll be excited in a few moments."
"Right," Ranma responded, annoyed as she removed Kodachi's hand from her thigh. "Getting a little grabby there, Ms. Kuno."
"Just getting a feel, my mate," Kodachi purred.
"Quit it, and I'm not your mate," Ranma growled.
Back at the arena, Amane made her way towards the altar and stood behind it. She got the crowd to settle down as the two chefs tied their aprons around their waists.
"I had to think long and hard on what ingredient to choose for this historic battle," Amane addresses the crowd. "It had to be something that would bring back sweet memories of Toshihiro Tadamichi's history in Culinary Combat. Something that would be worthy of his final hour here. Then I remembered...it was Chef Tadamichi's first match here many years ago. I was also a guest taster that day and I could never forget how delicious the dishes our Culinary Champion produced. So now...I unveil the secret ingredient!"
Amane pulled the cloth off the altar and revealed what seemed to a variety of potatoes, each with its own shade.
"Our secret ingredient...sweet potato!" Amane announced.
The crowd remained silent as the competitors nodded, pleased with the choice of ingredients. For Ranma's part, she became curious.
"Challenger Nakamura...Culinary Champion Tadamichi…," Amane said, gaining the attention of the competitors. "There are three things we hold dear in this institute: honor...glory...but most of all...taste."
Kobe and Toshihiro tensed up, ready to make their way towards the altar.
With a smirk etched on her face, Amane yelled out, "Break a dish, boys! À la guerre, chefs!"
The battle was underway as both chefs made their way to the altar with trays, with Kobe making a quick dash and Toshihiro taking his time. Both inspected each of the sweet potato variants and picked them from the altar. Once that was done, both chefs made their way back to their stations with Kobe giving instructions to his assistants while Toshihiro started to get his equipment ready in order to prepare for what he had in mind. Kobe's team didn't waste any time and had a sense of urgency about them as they started to prep the sweet potatoes while Toshihiro moved slowly as he organized his station with pots, pans, preparing the fryer and taking his time inspecting the ice cream machine. Toshihiro seemed patient and unconcerned as the minutes passed by while Kobe's team seemed to be frantic.
'Well...Kobe's team seems to take this contest seriously,' Ranma thought as she observed the proceedings. She turned her attention to Toshihiro and her expression turned to one of being unimpressed, even frowning at the slow pace of the Culinary Champion. 'And this old man...I don't know what he's trying to prove here, but I can see why he's retiring. It looks like his best years are behind him and I'll be surprised if he actually makes one plate.'
"Here it comes," Kodachi whispered.
Ranma briefly looked at Kodachi for a second before turning her attention back to Toshihiro. She looked at him oddly when he saw the Culinary Champion hunch over, his arms crossed, shaking and giving off a low growl. To Ranma, this came off as strange and was concerned if the old chef was going to keel over. The crowd was dead silent as well, though as she looked over the crowd's reaction, Ranma could tell that they were anticipating something amazing.
Finally, Toshihiro spread out his arms and roared," Kitchen Squad: Triple Attack!"
What happened next was something that Ranma couldn't believe even if she was seeing it before her. Toshihiro split himself into three people and without wasting any time, all three were working at their station at a fast rate. One of them started prepping the sweet potatoes, peeling and washing them. Another one was prepping additional vegetables to add to sweet potato dishes and finally, the main one, Ranma assumed, was busy prepping meat for what was to be the main course, pouring on spices to enhance the taste. All three of the Toshihiros were moving at such a speed that Ranma's eyes couldn't keep up.
"What...the..hell?" Ranma asked, dumbfounded.
"It is Chef Toshihiro Tadamichi's most powerful move," Kodachi explained, never taking her eyes off the battle. "The Kitchen Squad Attack. The ability to split oneself into many to accomplish the tasks of the kitchen. Lady Amane herself called Culinary Champion Toshihiro the one man kitchen team and as you can see, Ranma darling, it isn't just a fancy nickname."
Ranma could only nod as she continued to watch Toshihiro in action. She had to admit that the Culinary Champion was handling himself pretty well in this kitchen fight. Toshihiro, all three of them, looked cool, calm and definitely weren't breaking a sweat at the speed they were going. All the while, Kobe's team was struggling to keep up and there were times that one of the chefs would either trip up or spill a dish. It was as if Toshihiro's abilities were making them panic and Ranma didn't blame them. Culinary Champion Toshihiro was a sight to watch.
So enthralled with what was happening in this culinary combat, Ranma almost didn't notice that that much time had passed and cursed to herself. She had remembered that he still had a duty to complete and rose from her seat and made his way to leave.
"Darling, where are you going?" Kodachi asked as she pulled on Ranma's sleeve.
"The Tendos are waiting for me to get home with the groceries, Kodachi," Ranma answered. "That and I don't want to worry Kasumi by being late with the groceries."
"Oh, very well," Kodachi said reluctantly with a pout. "Though I hope we can get to know each other better next time."
"Don't push it," Ranma said flatly.
"Kasumi, I don't think this is necessary," Soun said as he followed Kasumi out of the house.
"So my boy is a little late," Genma said nonchalantly as he did the same as Soun. "I'm sure he isn't in too much trouble."
It had been more than an hour since lunch had ended and Ranma had yet to come home. It struck her as odd that the young man hadn't arrived in time for lunch and had missed his company. While her father and Genma were more reassuring that Ranma could take care of himself, Nabiki had lightly teased her about it while Akane thought the worst, saying that he probably ran off to China for a cure for his curse or hitting on a girl at the market. While she did believe that Ranma can take care of himself, Kasumi still didn't want him to get into trouble. Besides, Ranma still had studying to do and she didn't want him falling behind.
"Pardon me for worrying about a friend!" Kasumi said as she turned around to face Genma and Soun with a frown. "I swear, nobody in this house has any concern for him but me! I, for one, am going to look for him at the market!"
"And I say it's a fool's errand, Kasumi," Genma responded with a frown of his own. "I trained that boy to take care of himself and if by any chance he's lost somewhere, it's his own fault. He also has himself to blame for missing lunch."
"And you certainly didn't have to eat Ranma's portion, either!" Kasumi fired back.
"Just so you know, he would have done the same to me," Genma pointed out.
"Ranma's a growing boy whereas you have grown enough," Kasumi argued.
Genma was about to retort when he heard Soun snicker at him. He gave him a brief glare and turned his attention towards Kasumi. He tried to give her an imposing look as well as a stern frown, which was meant to get an apology out of her. After a few seconds of Kasumi not budging, Genma exhaled in defeat.
A few seconds later, Kasumi, Soun and Genma heard a car parking outside the gate and went to see who it was. They recognized the car as the same limo the Kunos had arrived in days earlier, though they noticed that the trunk had to be held together by a rope because it was overfilled with groceries. The first one to get out of the limo was Sasuke as he went to open the passenger door. The first passenger to get out was Ranma, in girl form, who upon noticing Kasumi, Soun and Genma, had a rather sheepish look on his face. It didn't help matters when Kodachi stood beside him, her arm entwined with hers and a smug look on her face.
Awkwardly, Ranma began to say, "Listen, I can explain-
"Raaanmaaaa!" Soun bellowed loudly, his head growing to an unnatural size that it resembled a demon with a long tongue. "How dare you cheat on my daughter like that!?"
"To think that I raised such a disgraceful boy!" yelled Genma.
"Would you let me explain!?" Ranma yelled back.
"Ranma...what happened?" Kasumi asked calmly, though she couldn't take her eyes off of how Kodachi was holding Ranma.
"After I got wet, I ran into Kodachi," Ranma responded as she managed to disengage from Kodachi. "She offered me to take me to a fancy market so I can get everything on the list. All on her credit, of course."
"And...we took in a little show underneath the Culinary Institute Market," Kodachi added while tracing a finger on Ranma's arm. "The culinary battle did catch Ranma darling's attention."
"Would you quit it?" Ranma said with annoyance.
Kasumi shook her head in disappointment and let out a sigh. She took a look at Ranma rubbing the back of his head and looking awkwardly and could tell that she was really sorry about being late. Kasumi folded her arms and gave Ranma a look that let her know how disappointed she was in her, which made Ranma look down in shame.
"Ranma, you really shouldn't let people rope you in like that," Kasumi chided. "You could get into a lot of trouble that punches and kicks can't solve."
"Wouldn't hurt to try," Ranma muttered. She realized her tone of voice and said, "Sorry, Kasumi. It won't happen again."
"Oh, alright," Kasumi responded with a slight smile. "I'll join you for our study session soon. Get your books ready."
"Can't wait," Ranma said, returning the smile. She then remembered something and saw that Sasuke was already carrying a box of groceries inside the house. Ranma called out, "Yo, Sasuke!"
Ranma ran up the little ninja who stopped and turned around. He then rummaged through the box Sasuke was carrying and pulled out a box of chocolates. Ranma then went over to Kasumi and offered the box to her.
"Listen, I know this doesn't make up for me being late, but I thought I'd get you a box of these," Ranma said. "They look really fancy and tasty, but I don't know if you like these sort of things, so…"
Kasumi examined the box of chocolates and was indeed surprised. It was a brand of chocolates called Bon Bon Castile. She recalled going to other markets around Furinkan and a tiny box of this brand would fetch for a hefty price. Kasumi could only wonder how much a large box of this brand of chocolates cost and Ranma basically got them for free off Kodachi's credit. Not wanting to be rude, Kasumi took the box from Ranma's hands and gave her a thankful look, though it changed to a smirk.
"You're not getting out of studying, young man," Kasumi said.
"Wouldn't dream of it, Ms. Tendo," Ranma responded with a suave tone. "I'll see you upstairs and we can share that box while we hit the books."
As she saw Ranma going into the Tendo home and Kasumi accepting the box of chocolates, Kodachi began to feel sick to her stomach. Her eyes twitched as well as she began to grit her teeth in anger. She couldn't decide what made her more mad: the fact that Ranma had used her credit to get Kasumi the most expensive candy at the Culinary Institute Market or the rather admittedly adorable display they just showed each other.
'Ranma...how could you be so cruel!?' Kodachi thought as she was on the verge of crying.
"Father...Mr. Saotome, could you please help Mr. Sasuke with the rest of the groceries?" Kasumi requested the two fathers.
"Right away, Kasumi," Soun said, his demon head deflating to its normal, human size.
With Soun and Genma picking up the rest of the groceries from the limo and going inside the house, Kasumi looked onto Kodachi with an indecipherable expression. Kodachi could only stare at her hatefully as she looked like she was about to explode. The Kuno heiress managed to calm down and breathed out a sigh. Kasumi raised an eyebrow when Kodachi gave her a smirk.
"A study session with Ranma darling with the accompaniment of chocolate," Kodachi began as she walked toward Kasumi. "My, my...aren't you the luckiest old lady in all of Japan? It must be nice having a young buck under the same roof as you. I applaud you, Kasumi Tendo. You have a great advantage and I'm sure you're making the most of this...arrangement that poor Ranma darling has been forced into."
Kasumi remained silent as she knew Kodachi was trying to bait her. She could see that the Kuno heiress was used to intimidating others to her will and enjoyed having power over them. Kasumi gave Kodachi a look of disappointment as she could tell from her behavior, that she was acting like a bully. She stood her ground as stoically as she could because she felt that Kodachi had more on her mind.
Seeing that Kasumi wasn't responding to her, Kodachi's expression turned fierce as she continued, "Listen to me you plain looking, geriatric weakling. I don't care what you missed out on in your high school days, but you had your shot at nabbing a young stallion like Ranma darling! Why don't go to a sanitarium and find yourself someone there!? I bet the men there are more your speed!"
Kasumi continued to hold her ground, which further infuriated Kodachi.
With a nasty smile, Kodachi went on, "You know what I am saying is true, Ms. Tendo! Ranma cannot possibly be happy with someone like you! He probably dreams of someone more refined, sophisticated and with the means to provide a lifestyle for him that you can't possibly fathom! I'll let you in on a little secret, you old hag! Ranma darling will be dreaming of me since I had myself a little feel and I can only imagine how much-
What happened next was something Kodachi didn't see coming. She was slapped across the face by Kasumi. The stinging impact almost staggered her but the pain was felt. Kodachi caressed her cheek in order to alleviate the pain, though her eyes were wide as she was in shock because of what had happened. Her expression then turned to anger as she turned to face Kasumi.
For Kasumi's part, she felt infuriated as she stared at Kodachi with intensity. The feeling didn't last very long as it was replaced with shock. Kasumi stared at her hand while also wondering what came over her. Kodachi was bragging about how superior she was one moment and when she got to the part where she felt Ranma up, something snapped inside her and her hand just flew, striking the Kuno heiress. The whole situation felt surreal to Kasumi along with something so alien that she couldn't quite put her finger on it.
Before Kasumi could utter a word, Kodachi beat her to it and growled, ""How dare you, you miserable, lowborn-
In an instant, Kasumi felt furious once again as she glared at Kodachi incredulously.
"How dare I...How dare I!?" Kasumi replied angrily, cutting Kodachi off. "Do you have...any idea what Ranma has been through since he arrived here!? Do you even have an inkling of what he has been through his entire life!? Do you even care about him or is he just a conquest for you, someone to bed with and throw away!?"
Hatred filled Kodachi's eyes as all she could see was a red haze. Both her hands were balled up into fists and her body was shaking, as if she was about ready to explode. There was something inside her that wanted to put Kasumi in her place as her right hand went up and made a motion to slap Kasumi back. Seconds passed, but Kodachi didn't move. Moments later, she started to chuckle, putting her hand down. Her chuckle then turned into a maniacal laughter that unnerved Kasumi. When she stopped, Kodachi smiled a nasty smile.
"Fortunately for you, Kasumi Tendo, I have better things to do than to dirty my hands on a soon to be spinster like yourself," Kodachi scoffed. She then called out, "Sasuke, we are leaving! Ready the car!"
Instantly, the little ninja was by Kodachi's side. He gave her a salute before running to the limo, getting inside and starting it.
"Just so you know, Kasumi Tendo, that my feelings are clear," Kodachi stated as she walked towards the limo. "Ranma Saotome will soon be mine and I'm going to enjoy tearing you apart...slowly and painfully."
With another laugh, Kodachi got into the limo and her laughter could be heard as the vehicle drove off into the distance.
As for Kasumi, she had managed to calm down, sighing in relief that it was over. When she turned around to make her way inside, she saw that her family and the Saotomes were staring at her in shock and were at a loss on what to say. It only took Kasumi a second to realize why and felt mortified, imagining how much of the incident they all saw. She had shown a side of herself she didn't know she had and she felt self conscious about it. With all eyes on her, Kasumi wasn't sure what to say and didn't trust herself to say anything.
Without thinking, she walked towards her family and the Saotomes and grabbed Ranma, who was in his male form, by the wrist. She basically dragged him all the way upstairs with him protesting. Kasumi didn't answer him and she didn't heed any concerns from her father, her sisters or Genma as she went to her room. With her and Ranma inside her room, Kasumi locked the door and before the young man could say anything, she gave him a fierce hug. She felt him stiffen, but she didn't let go. After a moment, Kasumi started sniffling into Ranma's shoulder and seconds later, she started to sob. She then felt a pair of arms embrace her and as good as that felt, she couldn't stop crying.
"Kasumi, I…," Ranma spoke softly.
"I'm so sorry, Ranma," Kasumi sobbed. "When she said she had a feel, something inside me just...I...don't know what came over me. I'm not like that and I'm sorry you had to see that. What you must think of me...good heavens, my family saw it, too. What they must think of me...my father must be so disappointed in me…"
"Now you hold it right there, Kasumi Tendo," Ranma said seriously.
Kasumi looked to Ranma and saw that he had an expression that matched his tone.
"Kasumi...yeah, what you did out there surprised me," Ranma admitted, his expression softening a bit. "To tell you the truth, I was about ready to jump in when Kodachi was saying all those things about you and then...wham! The way you tore into her afterward...I gotta say, I'm impressed."
"I still think I should have handled it better," Kasumi said worryingly. "There's no telling how Kodachi will retaliate because of this."
"Don't you worry your pretty little head about it," Ranma assured with a smile. "You already showed her that you're not the type of woman that backs down and if she still doesn't get the hint...well, I'll be there to back you up."
"Thank you, Ranma," Kasumi said in relief. "So...you really don't think I'm improper because of...what I did?"
"You stuck up for me again, Kasumi," Ranma responded. He then gave Kasumi a charming smile and added, "Besides, you showed me you can be tough when you want to be. It's kinda sexy."
At Ranma's complement, Kasumi blushed as she stared at Ranma's smiling face. She shook her head and she pushed off from Ranma and held the box of chocolates that he had given her earlier to her chest. Kasumi then turned her back to Ranma, hiding her embarrassment.
"You...you really shouldn't say things like that." Kasumi said nervously. "I'm an old fashioned girl, after all."
Ranma got in front of Kasumi and with a teasing tone, said, "An old fashioned girl with a really good smack."
With a frown and a growl, Kasumi lunged at Ranma and pushed him down on the bed, discarding the box of chocolates and startling the martial artist. She ended up on top of him, staring at him with intensity with her hands on his shoulders. For a moment, they remained in that position, both staring at each other and not daring to move an inch. Ranma and Kasumi then realized the position they were in and moved apart, blushing as they sat on the bed.
"I'm sorry!" Kasumi said quickly, embarrassed.
"Yeah, me, too," Ranma responded, also embarrassed. "Really shouldn't tease you like that."
"I should really let father and the others know that I'm well," Kasumi said as she got and went towards the door.
As soon as Kasumi opened the door, she was startled when her father, Genma and her two sisters fell to the floor. It took her a second to guess that they were listening in on what was happening and she let out a disappointed sigh while Ranma could only frown at them.
A hysterical and tearful Soun was the first one to get up and while holding onto his eldest daughter's hands, he asked, "Kasumi, are you alright!?"
"Father, I'm fine," replied Kasumi. "Ranma was kind enough to help me through this and I'm fine. Really, you worry too much."
"Forgive your father, Kasumi," Soun replied, though he couldn't stop crying. "It's just that...oh, you're so much like your mother! She was tough when she needed to be, too!"
'Oh, father,' Kasumi thought, sighing at her father's antics.
"You sure accepted a feisty one, boy," Genma complimented, getting up with a boisterous laugh. "Aren't you glad Tendo and I set this up?"
"Go choke on a bamboo pole, old man!" Ranma yelled.
"I gotta hand it to you, big sis," Nabiki said as she got up and dusted herself off. "I didn't know you had it in you. Now I really know it's not a good idea to piss you off."
"You really showed that Kuno girl a thing or two," Akane said happily as she got up.
"Alright, everyone," Kasumi said with exasperation as she pushed her father, her sisters and Genma out the door. "Ranma needs his study time and I don't want any of you to interrupt."
"Yeah, studies, she says," Nabiki teased.
"It better be just studies, you pervert!" Akane warned, glaring at Ranma.
"Out!" Kasumi shouted.
With one final push, Kasumi managed to get her family and Genma out the door and practically slammed the door shut and locked it. She sighed as she leaned her back on the door and slid down to the floor.
"Family can be so difficult sometimes," Kasumi commented.
"Couldn't agree with you more," Ranma said, pinching the bridge of his nose in annoyance.
Lying on her bed in her personal chamber, Kodachi stared at the roof, deep in thought. It hadn't been long since she and Sasuke had returned to the Kuno mansion and demanded the ninja that she was not to be disturbed, least of all by her big brother. Since then, she had been alone with her thoughts, thinking of her time with Ranma at the Culinary Coliseum and wished that her time with him never ended, that it would go on and on with many pleasurable moments to be shared in the privacy of her own room. Kodachi smiled at this fantasy and imagined herself being taken for a ride, with Ranma whispering in her ear about how much he loved and lusted her.
What Kodachi couldn't shake from her mind, however, was Kasumi Tendo. She kept remembering the slap over and over and each time she did, she felt the sting on her cheek. More than the pain, she felt that her pride had been besmirched and cursed the eldest Tendo daughter for it. Kodachi also remembered Kasumi's words after the slap and it only served to make her even more angry. In Kodachi's mind, the girl had to pay for laying a hand on her face and that Ranma belonged to her.
A smile crept up on Kodachi's face as an idea came to her. She got up and went to her phone and started to dial a number. She only had to wait a few seconds before a voice greeted her on the other end.
"Yes, I would like to speak to the head of the Culinary Council, please," Kodachi responded with a smirk. "This is Kodachi Kuno, now can I please speak to her please?"
There was a soothing musical track that played over the phone as Kodachi waited for an answer. She didn't have to wait long as she heard a new voice on the other end.
"Auntie Amane!" Kodachi greeted cheerfully. "Yes, I'm doing marvelously...yes, I was wondering if you could do your favorite niece a favor…"
