Crawl 'till dawn
On my hands and knees
Goddamn these vampires
For what they've done to me
Charlie Swan was a simple man. He didn't do well with change. It was an adjustment when Bella came to live with him. That was fine, she was his only daughter. Then she started dating that Cullen kid. Okay, that was a change. But again, Bella was seventeen it was only expected that she would start dating soon. Then eight months later he dumps her in the middle of the goddamn woods turning his daughter into a first-rate zombie. She barely ate, slept on and off. If there was anyone to blame for this mess, it was Cullens, especially Edward. Now, Charlie was not a man to judge a man. But sometimes he wondered how Carlisle taught his boys because it was apparently okay to leave people in the middle of the damn woods. Since then his entire life had been uprooted, it didn't really help with the animal attacks. He gripped the steering wheel of the cruiser as he drove home, expecting the same old Bella. It was past ten when he pulled to their house. He parked next to his daughter's truck. Tired from a long day at work he failed to notice a figure in the doorway carrying something and talking to his daughter or the car that was parked right next to Bella's truck.
"- to meet you, Ms. Swan. I'm sure you and Jade had a marvelous afternoon. Come over anytime, I'm sure Detective Decker would over have you for dinner. " Charlie only heard only half of what the figure said. Standing at the bottom of the front steps he cleared his throat making his daughter and the figure jump, nearly tossing the small lump he was carrying. The said small lump turned out to a girl around fourteen years old with bright purple hair.
"Uh, excuse me can I help you?'' Charlie asked. The figure, who in the dull light of that living room cast into the night turned around to reveal an overly handsome man with dark hair slicked back wearing a designer suit. A devilish smile grace his features, sticking a hand to Charlie, he introduced himself.
"You must be Charlie Swan, I'm Lucifer Morningstar, and this sleepy girl here is my daughter Jade.'' Lucifer switching his daughter over to his hip, Charlie took the former club owner's hand shaking it.
"Lucifer Morningstar? Like the nightclub owner?'' He asked. He had rumors of someone from LA coming and buying the old Green Valley Tavern. Lucifer grinned like the Chesire Cat.
"The one and only. If you'll excuse me I'll bid you both and Bella a good night. I hope to see you soon Bella.'' Charlie didn't say anything as he watched Lucifer place his daughter in the sea of his car, buckling her before getting in himself. He watched the car drive away from their small house.
"You seem happy,'' Charlie said as he closed the door behind him. Bella flopped down the couch and took a sip out of a mug. Placing his jacket on the coat rack, Charlie sat on the loveseat looking over at his daughter who still had a smile on her face.
"Okay, spill the beans, Isabella. What happened today that you made come out of Zombie Town.'' Going into the kitchen Bella placed the mug in the sink. Sitting on the floor she turned up the TV of the movie that she and Jade had been watching before Lucifer came and got her.
"Jade started school today, and I invited her over. No beans to spill.'' Bella said simply. Even though Charlie was happy that Bella seemed to be moving on from Edward, which made him happy enough but he knew that you didn't just pop back from depression like that.
"So if Jade showed up three weeks ago would have been this happy as you are now?'' Charlie asked. Bella shrugged, she didn't know. There was something about Jade that made her normal for once. Just a normal eighteen-year-old girl.
"I mean maybe. Jade needed a friend since it was her first day of school, so I stepped up.'' Charlie nodded. He knew of Lucifer Morningstar, there wasn't a person on the West Coast who didn't. Infamous playboy, millionaire, a nightclub owner from Los Angeles. His daughter was apparently making quite the splash on social media too.
"You, Bella Swan stepped up to help a new girl? Color me shocked.'' Charlie wasn't complaining, even though hadn't raised Bella for a good chunk of her life he installed, or at least he had hoped to instill a sense of helping others in need. But what he heard from Rene, she was quite back in Phoenix.
"She was crying in the bathroom. I guess, you being there myself I thought I could help. We… just kind of it hit off.'' Charlie nodded. He didn't know a whole lot about the Morningstar family outside of the fact that they were both celebrities of some kind, and were causing a stir in town. But it was good that Bella saw Jade needed some help.
"That's good Bells, I'm proud of you. If you want to go over to her house, just let me know.'' That was all Charlie said. He watched as his daughter went up to her room for the night.
"Night Bella!'' Hope you have good dreams for once. Charlie thought as he switched channels
As September turned into October, Bella and Jade became more in tune with each other. Often spending the night with each other, and calling each other after nightmares that tormented them both. Charlie was glad that Bella finally had someone to talk to about the nightmares, but he wondered how Jade's parents had handled it. He had met Lucifer that first time and only time he came to pick up Jade from his house, he was down to the newly renovated Green Valley Tavern and saw Lucifer interacting with the customers without a care in the world. Deceive Decker spent most of her time in Seattle, but the few times he did see, she looked exhausted with bags under her eyes, her color paler than usual. Walking into the station he grabbed the coffee that was prepared thankfully by Gracie, the receptionist. Giving a nod of thanks, Gracie returned it with a look of sympathy, last night had been a rough night. After screaming her head off, he found Bella on the phone with Jade. The two talked most of the night and into the early morning before he had to come and take her phone away. Going over to his desk, he found Detective Decker looking over some of the new case files. Her leg bounced up and down, her face scrunched up in confusion as she went over the autopsy reports.
"Morning Detective, find anything new?'' Charlie asked. Chole looked up with a start but shook her head. It had been a long night. Jade was having nightmares again, waking her and Lucifer up. Even though Lucifer claimed over and over that he did not sleep as much as she did, she wanted to give her finance a break. She found Jade talking on the phone with the chief's daughter, and let them talk for most of the night. But being they had school later, she had to cut their chat short.
"Morning Charlie, uh no. Nothing about this makes sense. Throats ripped out, blood drained. Chole let out a deep breath. Reaching into her pocket for her phone to call Lucifer. But then stopped. While working in LA, Lucifer was right by her side, her partner working on cases with his unique experience. But Washington laws prevented such partnerships unless said civilian had worked within the area of law enforcement or any relevant career.
"Something else on your mind.'' Chole nodded without looking up. They both knew what was up. Their eldest daughters. Both plagued by nightmares of different tormentors.
"How's Jade doing, with her…'' Charlie let it trail. He knew what happened, he read what happened to that Malcolm character and her ex-husband Dan. He suspected it was part of the reason why she and Lucifer were getting married so quickly.
"She's doing better, '' said Bella last night. Though I suspect you know that.'' Charlie nodded. Nothing more needed to be said. In the month that Morningstars had come to Forks, Charlie and Chole fell into a rhythm. The October morning shone through the station as the minutes passed. Nothing eventful happened, a few calls about some kids skipping school. No calls from Bella or Jade. Neither mother nor father knew if that was a good or bad thing. As the day drew to a close, close seven. Chole had gone some hours to Port Angeles to get a lead on the case. As he was getting ready to leave, an idea struck him. The girls had been spending a lot of time together, and Halloween was coming up. He remembered that Chole mentioned something about either Jade or Trixie's birthday was on Halloween. Charlie got an idea. He didn't know how well it would fly, but it was worth a shot. Chole came in to get her stuff, Charlie got up from the desk and approached her.
"Hey Detective, I was wondering which one of your kids has a birthday on Halloween?'' Chole cocked her head to the side, wondering why he was asking this.
"It's Jade, her birthday was coming up? You had something in mind?'' Truth was, that she didn't know if Jade wanted to do anything for her birthday.
"I have an old friend who lives on the reservation, Billy Black. His son is old friends with my daughter, and since our girls have been hanging out I was thinking…'' Charlie hadn't really thought this out. He hasn't even talked to Billy about it.
"What are you getting at Chief Swan? You better not be trying to set up Jade with a boy.'' Chole crossed her arms, the last thing that Jade needed was boy drama, not after what happened to Bella.
"No, once a month they have a bonfire and since it was falling on Jade's birthday I figured she could be with Bella and make some new friends.'' Chole took in a deep breath. Luci wanted to throw a surprise party for Jade after they went trick-or-treating. But on the other side, Dr. Martin said that making new friends would help Jade.
"I'll think about it.'' Charlie smiled, this would be good for both Bella and Jade. Chole waved to Charlie as she walked out of the station. As Chole walked out, she hoped she knew what she was dragging her family into.
