Pokémon Crimson Gold

Chapter 5: The downsides of pride

As Ethan left. Ready to embark on his new journey across the Johto region, he couldn't help but hear the comments of all the school kids and graduates talking smack about him. Ethan tried to close his heart to it.

"Professor Elm must have made a mistake letting him graduate."

"I heard he hasn't won a single battle so far."

"What a shame, how can a kid with such a strong father be so pathetic."

Ethan couldn't close his heart to it any longer.

"Alright! I've had enough, all the trainers among you assholes! If you want a piece of me, you can get some! I'll defeat every single one of you!" Ethan said, with a pissed off look to his face.

The kids all started laughing. But Ethan didn't care. He was ready to battle all of them.

It was then, when among the crowd of kids, the biggest, scariest of them emerged.

He was blonde, muscley, and most importantly tall. He towered over Ethan when he stood face to face with him.

"Emmett." Ethan said, with no fear in his eyes.

"Isn't this rich, the one boy in the whole fifth grade who failed and didn't receive a Pokémon, now thinks he can step up to me!" Emmett said, snickering.

"No, not just you, I'm ready to face anyone." Ethan said, with no hesitation.

"Chika Chika!" Chikorita said, barking at Emmett.

Emmett was the biggest bully back in trainer school, not only did he not show any respect for the teachers, but he also picked on many kids, including Ethan. Ethan couldn't even count how many times he had to hide black eyes from his mom when he got home, or how many times he was slammed in a locker or given wedgies. But now Ethan was looking him straight in the eye, ready to battle.

"Alright, alright. I'll entertain you," he said, revealing a Pokéball from his pocket. "I choose you!" He yelled, unleashing his Pokémon. It was a Croconaw.

"Croconaw!" It roared, pounding its' chest.

That's the earlier stage of dad's Pokémon. Ethan thought as he scanned it with his Pokédex.

"Croconaw, the Big Jaw Pokémon. If it loses a fang, a new one grows back in its place. There are always 48 fangs lining its mouth."

"Wow, Emmett's already evolved his starter!" The people watching were amazed.

"The hell is that?" The big bully asked.

"Who cares, now battle." Ethan said.

Chikorita formed a battle-ready stance.

A crowd started to form both Ethan and Emmett. No one was going to miss this battle.

"Croconaw, we'll start with bite!" Emmett commanded.

Croconaw moved to Chikorita and tried to bite her, but Chikorita fortunately was just slightly faster, and dodged the blow.

"Good timing, Chikorita, now use Razor Leaf!" Ethan yelled.

The Razor Leaf crashed into Emmett's Croconaw, causing super effective damage, but despite that, Croconaw seemed almost perfectly fine.

"Haha, that's what a year of experience can do." Emmett laughed. "Alright now, Croconaw, use Ice Fang!"

Croconaw's pounced, mouth wide open as his jaw started forming into pure ice.

Chikorita managed to dodge it but looked slightly concerned about something.

Ethan wiped some sweat from his face. Crap, well there's no hurting this thing, it's too bulky, but maybe there is another way? Ethan wondered.

The crowd raged as the battle continued. It was then when Ethan noticed Chikorita's leg was frozen.

"Crap! When did that happen?" Ethan yelled out loud.

"He's losing, no surprise there!" Some of the other kids in the crowd yelled.

"All right, Croconaw, we'll end this, now use slash." Emmett said, victory assured.

I don't like using this move, but oh well. Ethan began to think.

"Now Chikorita, Poison Powder!" Ethan yelled.

Right before Croconaw could slash his Chikorita, she let out a purple gas that engulfed the Pokémon entirely. Causing Emmett and the crowd some confusion.

"Yeah! If Chikorita can't hurt it physically. Then some status move ought to do the trick!" Ethan declared, happily.

Emmett was annoyed, he never expected Ethan to use a move like that.

"That was just a fluke, I'll prove it." Emmett announced, starting to worry a little.

"Wow, Ethan's actually not that bad." One member from the crowd said, stunned.

Once the smoke cleared, Croconaw was revealed, he was panting heavy, it was then when he was shocked by what seemed to be a purple spark. Croconaw's eyes were bloodshot red.

"Damnit, Croconaw, don't just stand there, Use Water gun!" Emmett yelled.

Croconaw listened and fired a heavy load of water from his mouth.

"Chikorita let's go, use Razor Leaf!" Ethan said, in bliss.

The Razor Leaf managed to tie against the Water gun. To Emmett's anger.

Emmett was pissed.

"Now Chikorita, use tackle!" Ethan said, happy he was winning.

Chikorita smashed her head into Croconaw's large gut. But it still barely managed to budge him.

"Croconaw, now use slash!" Emmett said.

It raised its arm to form the attack, but was then shocked by the poison it took in.

"Chikorita, now use that to your advantage and use Razor Leaf." Ethan said.

Chikorita launched some Razor Leaf's directly into Croconaw's gut, on top of the poison it hurt him.

The crowd couldn't believe their eyes, Ethan beating Emmett. It was a sight to be seen.

Croconaw raised it arm once more, and it quickly slashed Chikorita. Hurling her all the way to the ground.

"Chikorita!" Ethan yelled, suddenly losing all his smugness. Ethan caught Chikorita in his arms. "You okay?" he asked.

Croconaw fell to his knees, but then got back up slowly.

"Croconaw, you're doing good, continue!" Emmett said, not wanting to lose to Ethan.

Chikorita got back up, ready to continue. "Chika Chika!"

"Chikorita, you still have some energy left?" Ethan said, he wasn't so confident he could win anymore, but seeing Chikorita's determination brought him back.

"Alright, we're not giving in, Emmett, I suggest you give up." Ethan yelled to his bully.

"N-never, you're going down. And so is that damn Chikorita." Emmett said, pissed off. "Croconaw, once more, use slash!"

"Chikorita, charge and then Razor Leaf." Ethan said. Before the two Pokémon could hit each other. They were suddenly intercepted, as a Scizor appeared between the two, intercepting the hit.

The crowd was stunned to see Professor Elm, with a very displeased look on his face. Some backed away to not deal with his wrath.

"Ethan, Emmett, what are you two fools doing, firstly Pokémon battles are not allowed within the town premises!" He declared, angered.

"H-he started it, Ethan just had to go and challenge the whole lot of us, I just couldn't stand there and hear his boast!" Emmett said.

"I was just tired of your guy's crap; I've been taking it for so long!" Ethan said, clapping back.

Elm returned his Scizor to his Pokéball, with a look of disapproval on his face.

"More importantly, Ethan your pride almost got Chikorita seriously injured, or even worse what were you thinking, didn't you see how badly damaged she was?" Elm said.

Ethan grabbed his Chikorita, noticing the big cut she had from her belly to her forehead. He suddenly felt bad.

"Emmett, leave here. Take your Croconaw and go, I'll deal with you later!" Elm said.

"Pfft, whatever!" Emmett said, as he left, returning his Croconaw to its Pokéball.

Ethan prepared to hear the worst from Elm, about how he should have dropped out from grade school, about how he's not worthy of Chikorita, but instead, Elm put his hand on his shoulder.

"But seriously, that was some good battling. I see that extra year in school made you one heck of a smart thinker in battle." Elm said, making Ethan smile.

"T-thanks Professor." Ethan said.

"But still, when you get all full of yourself, you start to make big mistakes, as soon as you landed that Poison Powder you went straight for a tackle, even though going on the offensive didn't do much to Croconaw in the first place." Elm said. "So control that head of yours got it."

Ethan smiled. "Got it Professor, I promise I won't get that reckless ever again."

"Good, and well, I also wanted to say, I'm proud of you, for finally standing up for yourself to that guy." Elm said.

"Well, I should be getting to a Pokémon Center now." Ethan said, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Sure, absolutely," Elm said. "But before you go, would you mind doing me another favor?" Elm asked.

"Anything Professor, you name it." Ethan said.

Elm reached in his bag and pulled out the mysterious egg, placing it in Ethan's arms.

"I'm giving this to you, I want you to have it," Elm said.

"I-I couldn't, didn't Mr. Pokémon want you to have it and analyze it?" Ethan said. He didn't want to take it from the Professor.

"I already know what it's going to hatch into, and let me tell you, it's rare! But I'll keep that next part a secret from you." Elm said. "Please take it with you and return it to me once it hatches."

Chikorita nudged on Ethan's leg, it looked like she really wanted him to take it.

"Okay, I'll take it then. You sure about this?" Ethan asked.

"Of course, take care Ethan." Elm said, nodding his head.

"Alright, Chikorita, let's go!" Ethan yelled as the two ran off into the distance.

Hey, authors note here I just wanted to make it clear that I'll be adding some stuff to the story of Gold and Silver, as you can probably tell when reading this chapter. I still plan to keep the story identical to the games, at least until a certain point when it can diverge, but overall I still plan to uphold the legacy of these characters.
