Chapter 4: Meeting the Guardians
Yoni spun faster and faster with her elbows tucked tightly to her sides. She saw blurred fireplaces flashing by her, until she started to feel nauseous and closed her eyes.
Then Yoni felt herself slowing down and she threw out her hands. She brought herself to a halt in time to prevent herself from falling face forwards out of the Weasleys' kitchen fire.
Fred reached out and helped Yoni to get out of the fireplace. He opened his mouth to ask or say something, but closed it again when Harry arrived in the Weasleys' fireplace. Meanwhile, Yoni opened her cardigan and put the three wolf pups on the ground one by one.
"And did he eat it?" Fred asked Harry excitedly, while holding out a hand to help Harry out of the fireplace.
"Yeah." Harry said straightening up.
Yoni remembered that Dudley had eaten something that Fred and George had dropped on purpose and then asked curiously: "What was it?"
In the meanwhile, she kept a close eye on the wolf pups, while they sniffed around exploring the kitchen.
"Ton-Tongue Toffee." Fred answered brightly. "George and I invented them and we've been looking for someone to test them on all summer."
"You know you're going to get in trouble for this." Yoni said with a knowing grin and crossed her arms across her chest, as she shook her head slightly.
Fred just shrugged his shoulders.
The tiny kitchen exploded with laughter.
Yoni and Harry looked around and saw that Ron and George were sitting at the scrubbed wooden table with two red-haired people they both have never seen before. They knew immediately who they must be. Bill and Charlie, the two eldest Weasley brothers.
"Hello Yoni. Hello Harry, how are you doing?" The nearest of the two said.
He grinning held a large hand out, which Harry first shook and then Yoni.
Yoni felt calluses and blisters under her fingers.
That had to be Charlie, who worked with dragons in Romania. He was built like the twins and was shorter and stockier than Percy and Ron, who were both long and lanky. He had a broad and good-natured face, which was weather-beaten that he looked almost tanned. On one of his muscular arms, he had a large shiny scar from an old burn.
Bill got smiling to his feet and also shook Yoni and Harry's hand each. He came as something of a surprise, because the Potter siblings knew that he worked for Gringotts, the wizarding bank and that he had been Head Boy at Hogwarts. They had always imagined Bill to be an older version of Percy, fussy about rule-breaking and fond of bossing everyone around. However, Bill was... there was no other word for it... cool. He was tall, with long hair that he had tied back in a ponytail and was wearing an earring, with what looked like a fang dangling from it. His clothes wouldn't have looked out of place at a rock concert.
Except that Yoni and Harry recognise his boots to be made not out of leather, but out of dragonhide.
Both elder brothers were just like the twins and Ron subjected to a thorough sniffing inspection by the wolf pups.
Before any of them could say anything else, there was a faint popping noise and Mr Weasley appeared out of thin air at George's shoulder. He looked angrier than the Potter siblings had ever seen him.
"That wasn't funny, Fred!" Mr Weasley shouted. "What on earth did you give that Muggle boy?"
"I didn't give him anything." Fred said with another evil grin. "I just dropped it. It was his fault he went and ate it. I never told him to."
"You dropped it on purpose!" Mr Weasley roared. "You knew he'd eat it! You knew he was on a diet..."
"How big did his tongue get?" George asked eagerly.
"It was almost four foot long before his parents would let me shrink it!" Mr Weasley replied angrily.
Harry and the Weasleys roared with laughter again, while Yoni was giggling behind her hand.
"It isn't funny!" Mr Weasley shouted. "That sort of behaviour seriously undermines wizard and Muggle relations! I spend half my life campaigning against the mistreatment of Muggles and my own sons..."
"We didn't give it to him, because he was a Muggle!" Fred said indignantly.
"No, we gave it to him, because he's a great bullying git." George said. "Isn't he, Yoni? Harry?"
"Yeah, he is, Mr Weasley." Harry said earnestly, while Yoni nodded in agreement.
"That's not the point!" Mr Weasley raged. "You wait until I tell your mother..."
"Tell me what?" A voice said behind them.
Mrs Weasley had just entered the kitchen. She was a short and plump woman with a very kind face. Though her eyes were presently narrowed with suspicion.
"Hello Yoni, Harry." She said, as she spotted them and smiling, before her eyes snapped back to her husband. "Tell me what, Arthur?"
Mr Weasley hesitated and the Potter siblings could tell that even if he was so angry with Fred and George, he hadn't really intended to tell Mrs Weasley what had happened.
There was silence, while Mr Weasley eyed his wife nervously.
Then two girls appeared in the kitchen doorway behind Mrs Weasley.
One had very bushy brown hair and rather large front teeth. She was Hermione Granger, Harry and Ron's friend and a good friend of Yoni's.
The other was small and red-haired and was Fred, George and Ron's younger sister, Ginny.
They both smiled at the Potter siblings, who grinned back.
Ginny got scarlet... ever since Harry's first visit to The Burrow, while that was Yoni's second visit, she had been very taken with him.
"Tell me what, Arthur?" Mrs Weasley repeated in a dangerous sort of voice.
"It's nothing, Molly." Mr Weasley mumbled. "Fred and George just... but I've had words with them..."
"What have they done this time?" Mrs Weasley asked. "If it's got anything to do with Weasleys' Wizard Wheezed..."
"Why don't you show Harry where he's sleeping, Ron?" Hermione suggested from the doorway.
"He knows where he's sleeping." Ron said puzzled. "In my room. He slept the last..."
"We can all go." Hermione said pointedly.
Yoni understood why she said that, so they weren't there when Mrs Weasley yelled at the twins.
"Oh, right." Ron said a little sheepishly, when he figured it out.
"Yeah, we 'll come too." George said.
"You stay where you are!" Mrs Weasley snarled to the twins.
"Bill, Charlie, can you show Yoni where she would be sleeping?" Mr Weasley asked kindly of his two eldest sons, who both nodded.
Harry and Ron edged out of the kitchen and were followed by Hermione and Ginny.
Bill and Charlie also edged out of the kitchen with Yoni and went outside, while being followed by the three wolf pups.
"What are Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes?" Yoni asked Bill and Charlie curiously as they were just outside.
The wolf pups enthusiastically ran ahead of them, while playing with each other. It looked like it was good for them to be here, then to be locked up at number four Privet Drive.
Bill and Charlie chuckled for a moment.
"Mum found this stack of order forms, when she was cleaning Fred and George's room." Bill said quietly. "Great long price-lists for stuff they've invented. Joke stuff, you know. Fake wands and trick sweets, loads of stuff. It was brilliant. I never knew they'd been inventing all that..."
"We've been hearing explosions out of their room when we can home for a short vacation, but we never thought they were actually making things." Charlie said. "We thought they just liked the noise."
"Only most of the stuff... well all of it really... was a bit dangerous. " Bill continued. "And they were planning to sell it at Hogwarts to make some money. Mum went mad at them. They weren't allowed to make any more of it and burnt all the order forms. She's furious at them anyway. They didn't get as many O.W.L.s as she expected."
O.W.L.s were Ordinary Wizarding Levels. The examinations Hogwarts students took at the age of fifteen.
Last school year Yoni had taken together with Fred and George the exams for their O.W.L.s and they'd gotten the results this summer. She had heard how much the twins had achieved together. They had achieved a handful of O.W.L.s together. Her results on these exams were excellent and she passed all her subjects.
"And then there was this big row, because Mum wants them to go into the Ministry of Magic like Dad. They told her all they want to do is open a joke shop." Charlie said.
Yoni stopped for a moment and frowned at Bill and Charlie.
"Wait a minute, Fred and George working at the Ministry? It's actually impossible for me to imagine them working there." Yoni admitted honestly. "Working at the Ministry isn't really something for Fred and George. For that, you have to be someone who likes to follow the rules. You know just like me that it's not like Fred and George and they'd rather break the rules than follow them. I'm going to be honest, working at the Ministry isn't something for me either, but perhaps a position at the Wizengamot would allow me to make some changes for the benefit of both within the Ministry itself and the Wizarding World. But I'm not going to work in a department."
At that moment they were standing by a small tent and Yoni frowned again at both Bill and Charlie. She actually wondered how she could sleep in this tent with the other guests.
"Uh... are you sure that I can still get in? That tent looks small and cramped." Yoni said thoughtfully to the two oldest Weasley brothers.
"That's an optical illusion. It may look small and cramped from the outside, but you should take a look inside the tent." Charlie said shrugging and with a grin.
Bill held the tent flap open for Yoni and said then to her: "Come on, we'll introduce you to your fellow tent mates and then you can install your stuff in peace."
Yoni nodded a little and hesitantly entered the tent. She was closely followed by Bill, Charlie and the three wolf pups. She was somewhat surprised at seeing the inside of the tent. It was also much bigger on the inside than the outside. She saw that there was a sitting area near the tent entrance and there was a small kitchen further tent inwards. She saw that some people were sitting in the sitting area and that there were more exploring the small kitchen.
One of those who were sitting in the lounge seats of the sitting area, a young woman with long dark green-black hair and garnet eyes, noticed that they had visitors and smiled at the two eldest Weasley brothers and the strange young woman as she stood up. As soon as she got up, it caught the attention of the others who were in the small kitchen and came to her, and the others who were sitting in the lounge seats had gotten up too.
Yoni counted eleven new faces: one man and ten young woman and girls, but of one of them she wasn't really sure whether it was a man or a woman. She was getting a little nervous from the intense looks, that she was getting from some.
"Hello everyone, I hope you have already settled well in this tent." Bill said jovially with a smile to the eleven strangers in the tent, some of whom nodded affirmatively. "Well, my brother and I have come to introduce you to your new tent mate, so she can settle in too."
"This is your new tent mate, Yoni Potter. She'll sleep here with you in this tent, until you all take the Hogwarts Express to Hogwarts for the new school year." Charlie continued smiling. "Oh, and these pups are hers too. Looks like they are already very curious about you."
Yoni saw that Justitia, Ruina and Sententia had walked over to her eleven new tent mates and sniffed them one by one very curious to get to know them, but also to find whether or not they pose a threat to them.
"Yoni, this is Trista Meioh." Bill said as he began to introduce her tent mates to her and pointed to the young woman with very long dark green-black hair and garnet-red eyes, who had stood up first when they had entered the tent.
Who smiled at Yoni, when she was introduced and pointed out by Bill.
Bill pointed then to a young woman with long black hair and purple-grey eyes and said: "That's Raye Hino."
Who nodded briefly to Yoni with a somewhat forced smile.
Yoni could tell from that forced smile that Raye was a little suspicious of her, but she also understood why that was. Raye didn't know her yet and that made her suspicious.
"This is Mina Aino." Charlie continued to introduce and pointed to a young woman, who had long blond hair with a red bow and blue eyes.
Mina smiled kindly and brought her hand up.
"And this little young lady is called Rini Tsukino." He said with a broad grin.
The little girl had long pink hair pulled into two odango puns, that weren't round but in the shape of rabbit ears and red eyes. She smiled broadly and waved enthusiastically to Yoni.
This surprised Yoni quite a bit, because the others who had already been introduced to her were looking at her with suspicion. It seemed like she was going to kill them in their sleep at night. Which was actually ridiculous. She was glad that Rini wasn't like that and made her feel welcome.
"This is Lita Kino." Bill took over again and pointed to a young woman with long brown hair, pulled into a ponytail, and green eyes.
Lita gave a short nod, her arms crossed and had a stern look in her eyes, but she still had a friendly smile on her lips.
Yoni had to blink a few times and was quite surprised by Lita's size. She thought that she was quite large.
"This is Hotaru Tomoe." Bill continued, pointing to a little girl, who was slightly taller than Rini, with shoulder-length black-purplish hair and purple eyes.
Yoni saw that the girl's attention had been drawn to Ruina, who apparently had been preferred.
Hotaru didn't look up from the wolf pup until she heard her name. She looked shyly at Yoni with a shy smile, while Yoni simply smiled kindly back at her.
"Here we have Michelle Kaiou." Charlie said then, pointing to a young woman with long turquoise hair and dark blue eyes.
Michelle smiled friendly at their new tent mate, but her eyes looked somewhat suspicious at Yoni.
"And next to Michelle is Amara Tenou." The second oldest of the Weasley children continued and pointed to the one who looked like both a man and a woman, according to Yoni.
Amara had short blond hair and grey eyes, and had crossed her arms and glared at Yoni.
Yoni certainly started to feel uncomfortable seeing that glare. She really wanted to flee the tent and sleep with Fred and George in their room. She turned her gaze from Amara and looked at her other tent mates, while she waited for their introduction from Bill and Charlie.
"Then we have Amy Anderson!" Bill took over introducing from Charlie again and pointed to a young woman with blue hair and pale blue eyes.
Amy didn't look as threatening as Amara. She was more likely very curious about their new tent mate and looked calculating at Yoni.
"This is Serena Tsukino." He continued and pointed at the last young woman, who had long blond hair in two round odango puns and blue eyes.
Serena smiled shyly and waved at Yoni, while leaning intimately against the only young man in their group.
Yoni assumed that Serena was in a relationship with him and they appeared to be very close.
"And finally, we have Darien Shields. The only man in the group." Charlie said smiling and pointed to the young man, against whom Serena leaned intimately.
Darien Shields had short black hair and dark blue eyes. He smiled and raised his hand.
Yoni also noted there were two cats; one black and the other white, and apparently, they both had a golden crescent moon on their foreheads.
"Oh, that's Luna and Artemis. The black one is Luna and Artemis is the white one." Charlie added.
"Trista, could you please take Yoni to the sleeping area for a second, so she could get settled too?" Bill asked kindly to Trista, who nodded curtly and briefly. "Thank you."
"See you, Yoni." Charlie said cheerfully. "We're going to see if Mum has already stopped yelling at the twins and if we can help her with anything."
Yoni nodded a little and watched Bill and Charlie leave the tent. She really wanted to go with them and spend the night with the twins in their room, then in this tent. She just felt like an intruder and very unwelcome here. She felt how tense the atmosphere had become and she wasn't alone. She saw that three wolf pups had also felt the tension and came to hide behind her legs and trunk in fright. From the wicker basket, she heard an angry and uncomfortable hissing and growling coming from Harena. She was quite glad that she wasn't the only one who just felt uncomfortable.
Trista took a few steps forward and said then to Yoni with a friendly and business-like smile: "Come Yoni, I'll show you where you'll be sleeping."
Yoni nodded and was about to take her trunk, when Darien came up to her.
"Wait, let me help you with that. That trunk seems to be very heavy." He said with a broad smile and took the trunk from her.
"Thank you." She whispered to him almost inaudibly, as he walked past her with her trunk to the sleeping area.
Yoni followed Trista closely to the sleeping area and the wolf pups followed her playfully.
In the sleeping area, Yoni saw six bunk beds and knew that she had to share one of them with someone, until the new school year started again at Hogwarts.
Trista moved to her bunk bed and turned to Yoni.
"All bunk beds are taken, but we can share one." She said friendly. "I'll take the top bunk and the bottom bunk is for you. If that's okay with you?"
"That's no problem for me." Yoni replied smiling.
Darien put the trunk down next to the bunk bed and she said smiling: "Thank you."
"You're welcome." He said smiling and left the sleeping area to give her some privacy to settle in.
"I'll leave you alone for a while, so that you can get settled in peace." Trista said friendly and therefore left the sleeping area of the tent to rejoin the others.
Yoni sat down on the bottom bunk with a deep soft sigh and put the wicker travel basket onto the bed beside her. She opened it and Harena slowly crawled out.
Harena stretched a little and looked somewhat bored at her Mistress. She was even purring softly, while she looked around to explore her new surroundings. Then she turned her attention to the entrance to the sleeping area to keep a close eye on it. It looked like she didn't really trust it, because of all the tension in the atmosphere here in the tent.
Yoni had to laugh softly with it and knew that her loyal Lynx cub will watch over her, when her back was turned to her tent mates. She opened her trunk and pulled Harena's basket out. She put it close to her bed, even though she suspected that Harena was going to sleep in her bed. So the wolf pups will probably sleep in it too. She also took her pyjamas and toilet bag out and placed them on the bed, before closing the lid of her trunk again. She then pushed it partially under her bed. She then took off her soot-covered cardigan and heard some buzz coming from the other part of the tent. She cocked her ears and listened carefully to what was being said there. She already suspected that her new tent mates were talking about her.
"I don't trust her." She heard a pretty heavy woman's voice growl. "She could be a dangerous creature, who wants to harm our princess."
'Huh? Princess?' Yoni thought confused and frowned. 'What are they talking about?'
"Amara, you aren't even sure about that." A soft woman's voice said indignantly to the previous woman. "She can't possibly be a monster."
"Serena is right, Amara." She heard Darien say calmy. "If Yoni were really a monster, then she would have attacked us a long time ago."
"Darien is right about that." Another woman's voice said calmly. "Most Youma monsters would have attacked us by now, even if we aren't transformed now."
"Mina is right about that too. Usually, most Youma monsters attack us if some of us aren't transformed yet." Another woman's voice said thoughtfully.
According to Yoni, it sounded pretty tough. She quietly listened, as she put her pyjamas on her pillow to use it for the night.
"Yoni isn't a Youma monster!" She heard a little girl's voice say in protest and she suspected that it was Rini.
"Rini is right." Another girl's voice said quietly. "If Yoni is supposed to be so evil, why did she let me pet one of those wolf pups?"
Yoni suspected that it was Hotaru, because Ruina was the one who was being petted by Hotaru.
Then she heard another woman's voice say: "It could be that she allowed that to see what our weakness is."
"That could be possible, Raye." An elegant woman's voice said softly and thoughtfully.
"Hmmm, that could be, but according to my calculations it wouldn't be possible either." Another woman's voice said calmly and logical.
"Amy may be right." Trista said very calm and matter-of-factly. "We'd better wait and observe her from a distance. Then we can decide whether she is our friend or enemy."
Everyone agreed with her proposal.
Yoni was quite offended that some of her tent mates... Amara, Michelle and Raye... thought she was some kind of monster, who was apparently going to attack and destroy them. There she had to roll her eyes for. She wasn't a Youma monster, as she was called by them. She was a witch, who was an Animagus and could turn into a Direwolf. She was glad that Serena, Darien, Rini, Hotaru, Lita and Mina didn't take her for a monster and defended her. She thought that Trista and Amy seemed to doubt whether she was a friend or foe. She couldn't believe that her tent mates were so paranoid and see everyone as a possible 'Youma' monster. Which was pretty ridiculous. She thought that she had heard quite enough and decided to go back to the house. She took Harena in her arms and got up from the bed.
Harena climbed from her Mistress' arms onto her shoulders and lay there like a scarf.
Yoni left the sleeping area and was closely followed by the three wolf pups. She hurried to the exit of the tent and left it without glancing back at her tent mates. She walked to the house and entered the kitchen with a deep sigh. She saw that Mrs Weasley was alone in the kitchen, looking extremely bad-tempered. When she closed the back door behind her; Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny also entered the kitchen.
"We're eating out in the garden." Mrs Weasley said when she saw them come in. "There's just not room for twenty-three people in here. Could you take the plates outside, Hermione and Ginny? Bill and Charlie are setting up the tables. Yoni, could you please take the glasses out? And you two, Harry and Ron, please take the knives and forks."
She pointed her wand a little more vigorously than she had intended at a pile of potatoes in the sink and shot out of their skins so fast that they ricocheted off the walls and ceilings.
"Oh, for heaven's sake." Mrs Weasley snapped and directed now her wand at a dustpan, which hopped off the side and started skating across the floor, scooping up the potatoes. "Those two!"
She furiously snatched pots and pans out of a kitchen cupboard and the Potter siblings knew she meant Fred and George.
"I don't know what's going to happen to them, I really don't. No ambition, unless you count making as much trouble as they possibly can..." She raged as she slammed a large copper saucepan onto the kitchen table and began to wave her wand around inside, while stirring... a creamy sauce poured from the wand tip.
"It's not as though they haven't got brains." She continued irritably, while taking the saucepan over to the stove and lighted it with a further poke of her wand. "They're wasting them and unless they pull themselves together soon, then they'll be in real trouble. I've had more owls from Hogwarts about them, then the rest put together. If they carry on the way they're going, they'll end up in front of the Improper Use of Magic Office!"
Yoni really couldn't help but roll her eyes, when she heard that.
Mrs Weasley jabbed her wand at the cutlery drawer, which shot open and Harry and Ron both had to jump out of the way as several knives soared out of it. They flew across the kitchen and began chopping the potatoes, which had just been tipped back into the sink by the dustpan.
"I don't know where we went wrong with them." Mrs Weasley said, putting her wand down and started to pull out some more saucepans. "It's been the same for years. One thing after another and they won't listen to... OH, NOT AGAIN!"
She had picked up her wand from the table and it turned into a giant squeaking rubber mouse.
"One of their fake wands again!" She shouted angrily. "How many times have I told those two not to leave them laying around?"
She grabbed her real wand and turned around to see that the sauce on the stove was smoking.
"C'mon." Ron said hurriedly and seized a handful of cutlery from the drawer. "Let's go and help Bill and Charlie."
Yoni quickly grabbed a tray full of glasses from the table to go out to the garden together with the others.
They left Mrs Weasley and headed out of the back door into the yard. They had only gone a few paces, when a bandy-legged ginger cat came pelting out of the garden with his bottle-brush tail held high in the air.
That was Crookshanks, Hermione's cat and he was chasing what looked like a muddy potato on legs.
The Potter siblings recognised it instantly as a gnome. It was barely ten inches high and its horny little feet pattered very fast as it sprinted across the yard, while diving headlong into one of the wellington boots that lay scattered around the door. They could hear the gnome giggling madly, as Crookshanks inserted a paw into the boot and tried to reach it.
Harena saw something move farther down in the grass and skilfully jumped from her Mistress' shoulders. She shot through the grass with a growl to where the movement had been detected and the wolf pups followed the Lynx closely out of curiosity.
Meanwhile, a very loud crashing noise was coming from the other side of the house.
The source of the commotion was revealed, as they entered the garden and saw that Bill and Charlie both had their wands out and were making four battered old tables fly high above the lawn. Two of the four tables were smashing into each other and attempted to knock the other's out of the air, while the other two tables remained floating motionlessly in the air.
Fred and George were cheering, while Ginny was laughing and Hermione was hovering near the hedge... apparently torn between amusement and anxiety.
To her great relief, Yoni saw that her tent mates weren't there yet.
Bill's table caught Charlie's with a huge bang and knocked one of its legs off.
There was a clatter from overhead and they all looked up to see Percy's head poking out of a window on the second floor.
"Will you keep it down!" He bellowed angrily.
"Sorry, Perce." Bill said grinning. "How are the cauldron bottoms coming on?"
"Very badly!" Percy said peevishly and he slammed the window shut again.
Chuckling Bill and Charlie directed the tables safely onto the grass end to and with a flick of his wand Bill reattached the table leg and conjured table cloths from nowhere.
Yoni put the tray full of glasses down onto the tables, as Fred and George joined her.
"And how are you with your tent mates?" Fred asked curiously.
"Honestly?" Yoni said with a raised eyebrow and Fred and George nodded. "Well, to be honest, I don't like them."
"Why not?" George asked puzzled.
"Yes, they seemed quite nice to us." Fred said thoughtfully.
"Well, they weren't that nice when they were talking about me, while I was getting settled in the sleeping area of that tent." She hissed furiously through her teeth.
"What might they have said?" Fred asked shocked.
"They're convinced that I would be a monster. A monster that will attack and destroy them." She said angrily and Fred and George looked at her in shock.
"WHAT!?" They said in unison.
Yoni crossed her arms and said: "I would rather spend the night in your room, than with them in that tent."
"Then you do it." Fred said shrugging.
"Yeah, you just sneak into our room, when everyone is sleeping." George suggested with a broad grin.
Yoni had to laugh about that and thought that it was a good idea. A very good and tempting idea to be honest.
The twins helped her put the glasses on the tables, while Ginny and Hermione put the plates on them with Harry and Ron dividing the cutlery.
By seven o'clock the four tables were groaning under dishes and dishes of Mrs Weasley's excellent cooking and the nine Weasleys, Yoni, Harry, Hermione and the foreign guests were settling themselves down to eat beneath a clear deep-blue sky.
To somebody, who have been living on meals of increasingly stale cake all summer, was this paradise and at first, the Potter siblings listened rather than talked, as they helped themselves to chicken-and-ham pie, boiled potatoes and salad.
Yoni sat between Fred and George with Harena laying on her shoulders again, while enjoying Mrs Weasley's cooking and she also remained as far away from her tent mates as possible.
At the far end of the table, where the foreign guests were sitting, Percy was telling his father all about his report on cauldron bottoms.
"I've told Mr Crouch that I'll have it ready by Tuesday." Percy said pompously. "That's a bit sooner than he expected it, but I like to keep on top of things. I think he'll be grateful I've done it in good time. I mean it's extremely busy in our department just now with all the arrangements for the World Cup. We're just not getting the support we need from the Department of Magical Games and Sport. Ludo Bagman..."
"I like Ludo." Mr Weasley said mildly. "He was the one who got us such good tickets for the Cup. I did him a bit of a favour, when his brother Otto got into a spot of trouble. It was about a lawnmower with unnatural powers and I smoothed the whole think over."
"Oh, Bagman's likeable enough of course," Percy said dismissively. "but how he ever got to be Head of Department... when I compare him to Mr Crouch! I can't see Mr Crouch losing a member of our department and not trying to find out what's happened to them. You realise Bertha Jorkins has been missing for over a month now? She went on holiday to Albania and never came back."
"Yes, I was asking Ludo about that." Mr Weasley said frowning. "He says Bertha's got lost plenty of times before now, though I must say if it was someone in my department I'd be worried..."
"Oh, Bertha's hopeless all right." Percy said. "I hear she's been shunted from department to department for years. Much more trouble than she's worth, but all the same Bagman ought to be trying to find her. Mr Crouch has been talking a personal interest. She worked in our department at one time, you know, and I think Mr Crouch was quite fond of her. Bagman just keeps laughing and saying she probably misread the map and ended up in Australia instead of Albania, however..."
Percy heaved an impressive sigh and took a deep swig of elderflower wine, before he continued: "We've got quite enough on our plates at the Department of International Magical Co-operation without trying to find members of other departments too. As you know, we've got another big event to organise right after the World Cup."
He cleared his throat significantly and looked down towards the end of the very long table where Fred, George, Yoni, Harry, Ron and Hermione were sitting.
"You know the one I'm talking about, Father." He continued and raised his voice slightly. "The top-secret one."
Fred and George rolled their eyes and Fred muttered to Yoni: "He's been trying to get us to ask what event is ever since he started work. Probably an exhibition of thick-bottomed cauldrons."
Ron also informed Harry and Hermione of this.
Yoni had to roll her eyes and knew that Percy was now challenging his siblings to ask him.
"He'll probably tell our foreign guests about that larger event, if they ask about it." She muttered bitterly, while she sat with narrowed eyes looking angrily at her tent mates.
In the middle of the tables, Mrs Weasley was arguing with Bill about his earring, which seemed to be a recent acquisition.
"... and with a horrible great fang on it. Really, Bill! What do they say at the bank?" She said disapprovingly.
"Mum, no one at the bank gives a damn how I dress as long as I bring home plenty of treasure." Bill said patiently.
"And your hair is getting silly." Mrs Weasley said, who was fingering her wand lovingly. "I wish you'd let me give it a trim..."
"I like it." Ginny said, who was sitting beside Bill. "You're so old-fashioned, Mum. Anyway, it's nowhere near as long as Professor Dumbledore's..."
Yoni listened attentively to Fred and George, who along with Charlie, as they talked animatedly about the World Cup. Which cheered her up best.
"It's got to be Ireland." Charlie said thickly through a mouthful of potato. "They flattened Peru in the semi-finals."
"But Bulgaria have got Viktor Krum though." Fred said.
"Krum is one decent player, but Ireland have got seven." Charlie said shortly. "I wish England had got through, though. That was really embarrassing."
"What happened?" Harry asked eagerly and Yoni had to smile.
The Potter siblings have been regretting more than ever their isolation from the Wizarding World, when they were stuck in Privet Drive.
Yoni knew that her brother was passionate about Quidditch. She was also passionate about Quidditch, but not as much as he was. Ever since her third year at Hogwarts, she had seen him play as Seeker on the Gryffindor house Quidditch team and he also owned a Firebolt, one of the best racing brooms in the world.
"Went down to Transylvania with three hundred and ninety to ten." Charlie said gloomily. "A shocking performance. And Wales lost to Uganda and Scotland were slaughtered by Luxembourg."
Mr Weasley conjured up candles to light the darkening garden before they had their pudding, homemade strawberry ice cream. Which was very delicious.
By the time they had finished, moths were fluttering low over the tables and the warm air was perfumed with the smells of grass and honeysuckle.
Yoni was feeling extremely well fed and at peace, and watched several gnomes sprinting through the rose bushes laughing madly and closely pursued by Crookshanks, Harena en the three wolf pups. She dreaded spending the night in a tent full of strangers. She listened attentively to what Fred and George were saying and also glanced every now and then at Harry and his friends. She suspected that he'd told them he'd written Sirius a few times.
"Look at the time." Mrs Weasley said suddenly, while checking her wristwatch. "You should already be in bed. You'll be up at the crack of dawn to get to the Cup. Yoni, Harry, if you both leave your school list out, I'll get your things for you two tomorrow in Diagon Alley. I'm getting everyone else's. There might not be time after the World Cup, because the last time the match went on for five days."
"Wow, I hope it does this time too!" Harry said enthusiastically and Yoni giggled softly behind her hand.
"Well, I certainly don't." Percy said sanctimoniously. "I shudder to think what the state of my in-tray would be, if I was away from work for five days."
Yoni rolled her eyes in irritation.
"Yeah, someone might slip dragon dung in it again, eh Perce?" Fred said teasingly.
"That was a sample of fertiliser from Norway!" Percy said going very red in the face. "It was nothing personal!"
"It was." Fred whispered to Yoni and Harry, as they got up from the table. "We sent it."
The group split into two; the Weasleys, Hermione and Harry went into the house and the foreign guests and Yoni went to the tent.
Yoni quickly changed into her pyjamas, put some clothes into her backpack unnoticed so she could slip out of the tent and crawled into her bed. She closed her eyes to pretend that she was asleep, so she could wait to slip out of the tent at the right moment.
Yoni slowly opened her eyes several hours later and the tent was pitch black. She heard that everyone was asleep in the sleeping area. She crawled quietly out of her bed and tiptoed out of the sleeping area. She was closely followed by Harena and the three wolf pups. She slipped out of the tent with her backpack over her shoulder and through the garden to the back door. She opened it very quietly and carefully, before slipping into the kitchen and gently closed the door, as Harena and the wolf pups were inside. Together they crept through the house to the house to the stairs and went it up until they reached the floor where the twins' room was.
Yoni opened that door very quietly and quickly slipped in with Harena and the wolf pups, before gently closing the door behind her again. She tiptoed to where the twins had pushed their beds together and slipped into the 'double' bed. She lay down under the sheets between Fred and George.
Harena jumped onto the bed with them and snuggled close at her Mistress' feet.
The wolf pups decided to spend the night under the bed together.
Yoni closed her eyes and this time fell into a deep sleep, safe with her friends.
I hope you enjoyed it.
