Arthur was silent for a moment. "Why did you accept a contract?" Arthur's head tilted slightly.
"I was bored, it is the same thing in and out in hell. Make sure that everything runs in the perfect little circle. Plus a lot of sorcerers had made contracts with demons the last few years, it was bound to end up before me." Merlin shrugged slightly as he looked at Arthur.
There was silence for a long time, the two just sitting next to each other.
Merlin had started to think that Arthur might have fallen asleep when he suddenly jumped up. Merlin could only watch in amusement as Arthur fell over his feet as he rushed from the room. With a small eye roll, Merlin trailed after him.
For a moment Merlin could feel a foreign emotion as he watched Arthur pushed the dungeon's gate open. The guards didn't stare at the prince even though they wondered why he was going to the sentenced witch cell.
Arthur stopped in front of the gate, he could feel his heartbreaking as he looked at the girl who had cruelled herself up into a tight little ball. He could hear the faint sniffling as she cried.
He was silent as he just looked at her. He could see a similar green-eyed girl in his mind. Who had used magic to save her mother, to protect the only family she has.
This girl had done the same and was caught. And why? Because Uther had a stick so far up his ass that he doesn't see how he is hurting the kingdom. The people were too scared to even utter the words about magic or try and go up against him.
As soon as he gets wind of someone not agreeing with him, he finds a way to kill them.
Merlin was silent as he put a hand on Arthur's shoulder. With a small indication from his head, he showed Arthur that he needs to go. There was nothing that he could say or do that would change her faith.
With a soft sigh, Arthur followed Merlin back to his chambers. His shoulders slightly slumped as reality hit him.
There was nothing that he would ever be able to do to keep his people safe. They will keep on dying until the day that Uther is off the throne.
Neither reacted when they got back to the chambers and George was there to get Arthur ready for the execution. The words had dried up.
Merlin just seamlessly blends in with the background as Arthur got dressed in more formal clothing. His muscles were slightly tensed and there was a hard line around his eyes.
Both of them knows what is to come and Merlin couldn't help but wonder why Uther was so hell-bent on killing his heir from the inside out. Because that is all that would happen in the end.
Arthur is trying his best to make Uther happy but at the same time is the actions that would make Uther happy contradicting his personal choice. He doesn't want to kill people with magic, he doesn't want them prosecuted except when they had gone out of their way to hurt, kill or become a threat to the kingdom.
And now he wants Arthur to lite that pyre. Don't he realise the damage that he is doing?
Arthur was silent as he listened to the speech Uther was spewing about how evil magic was and why it needs to be destroyed.
He could hear the girl's screams as she was bought closer to the pyre. She was struggling in the guard's arms. Kicking her feet into the ground as best as she could. But it didn't stop them from advancing.
When she was tied to the pyre her eyes lands on Arthur.
"All of the royal family will go to hell!" Her voice was hoars. As she glared at Arthur.
A soft I know she didn't hear. When Uther signal that the fire should be lit, Arthur could feel the nauseous almost overwhelming him.
A cold sweat broke out against his neck. A hand against his shoulder made him jump and when he turned around Merlin gave him a reassuring smile.
This wasn't going to get better.
