By the time Judy and Nick got back to the police station, it was getting late. As the other cops came to take the giraffe off their hands, Nick turned to Judy, and looked at her a moment. All was silent, it was just her and Nick and Clawhauser behind his desk in the empty lobby.
Nick held out his paw. "Hand it over."
Judy hesitated. "Nick, I can't-"
"You do not know how to handle that thing, and it should be confiscated until you do."
Judy pulled away, "If I didn't have the taser, we wouldn't have caught the crook."
"It was irresponsible, and nobody deserves to be shot like that," Nick said.
"Irresponsible? These are fugitives of the LAW! They don't deserve anything."
"They are living creatures! They have the right not to get tasered in the... Whatever... Every single time they make a mistake! Now hand it over!"
"No!"
Nick leaped for Judy's belt and pulled the taser out. Judy grabbed it and pulled back.
"Let go!" Nick yelled.
"No!" Judy yelled back, "I need it!"
"Hey, calm down," said Clawhauser, running out from behind his desk to break up the fight. "I'm sure we can work something ou-"
And just then, in their struggle over the taser, Judy's finger accidentally slipped over the trigger, and she pulled.
The taser released, sailing through the air, Clawhauser was unable to step aside in time.
And it hit him. Just like everyone else that day.
Judy and Nick froze. Clawhauser dropped to his knees, his ears folding back on his head.
"Ow." He whimpered.
Judy's body shook. She looked at the taser in her hands, then Clawhauser, then Nick, and then finally in the direction the giraffe had been taken.
Judy dropped the taser into Nick's hand, and then she left the station, without another word.
The next few days were quiet for Judy. She never once brought back up the taser incident. She was beginning to calm down. She began to realize she was doing just fine learning to work without it.
And then Chief Bogo called her to his office.
As she stepped in, she was worried to see Nick. Did he tell on her about the accident? Both Nick and Clawhauser seemed to have forgiven her.
But it was about something else entirely.
"Remember that rabbit you brought in the other day?" Bogo asked.
"Yes..." Judy hesitated.
"Well, we've gotten back the DNA results," Bogo hesitated, "And we got a match."
Judy wasn't sure where to go with this, "With who?"
Chief Bogo looked at her seriously. "With you."
A silence filled the room.
"The DNA results aren't just similar to yours. They match yours exactly."
