"So, you said no to that boy." I stated with a tone that said 'it was so obvious'. After school, Keiko walked me home, and while doing that she told me how a boy asked her out. Well, of course, she would reject him because she only has eyes for my brother, even though she never admits it.
"Well, what else could I have said to him?" Keiko replied. "I already like someone else."
"But why him of all people?" I asked out loud referring to my brother. It's still a mystery to me of how on earth did a girl as smart as she attached her feelings toward someone as idiotic as my moron punk of a sibling I have.
"I have no idea who you're talking about." Keiko got all defensive like always, and in many cases her stuttering betrayed her true feelings. Unfortunately for her, I was not blind. It's clear as day that she had the hugest crush on Yusuke since we became friends at the age of twelve, and eleven.
"You can do better." I said with an emotionless tone, but the statement was true.
"Well, then what about that small 'incident' with the red-headed boy who you used to hanged out with, back when you were living in that city?" Keiko asked slyly. The air was caught in my throat as I feel my cheeks heating up. God damn it Keiko for bringing that up. I should have known not to talk about this but my naïve self was such an idiot back then.
"I was naïve and foolish child." I told her as I placed my right hand over my face, covering my flushed cheeks. " And mind you, it was and accident." I reminded her as I shook my head to shake off the embarrassment. I hate having emotions like these. Why do I even have them?! I don't freaking deserve it.
"Oh, come on Miyuki, why is it always half empty to you?" Keiko scolded at me before a sigh replaced her question. I didn't reply and just continued on our way in silence. As soon as we arrived at my house, I grabbed my keys. The sight that welcomed us was a house filled with many mountains that were made out of trash. Either cans, broken glass, magazines, or other disgusting stuff that covered the whole floor. The sink was also filled with many unclean plates and chopsticks. Dang it, the whole thing looked like it was ambushed by a giant tornado that brought the whole junkyard into this very house. Most importantly, how did this even happen in the first place when I clean up almost every flipping night?
"Ugh! I don't even think we can get to the other side without stepping on some half-chewed food or broken glass." Keiko complained before turning to me questioningly. I just shrugged my shoulder and give a look that says 'don't look at me like it's my fault.'.
Seriously, how did mom even manage to create chaos like that in less than half a day?
Stepping over some magazines and garbage bags I finally go to the table where a had spotted a note. Sure enough, I feel my eyes twitching with annoyance.
Miyuki, Keiko ~ Be gone for a little while. Take care of Yusuke for me.
Oh, the nerve of that woman. . . .
"What's that?" Keiko asked as she managed to get to my side with some difficulties. I just closed my eyes shut out of irritation and pushed the note into the brunette girl's grasp. As expected, she was growling at the now crumbled note.
"Uhh, guess she is back to normal." Keiko concluded just as irritated as I was.
"I'll try to clean up the kitchen. You take care of my brother there, he is in the next room." I instructed her and then I got to work immediately. As I reached the sink, however, I felt that tingling feeling again, but this time it was somewhat stronger.
If I am correct there were like three more presence in the area I am at.
"This is terrible!" Exclaimed Keiko loud enough to snap me out of my small trance. "Even Yusuke is covered in garbage." Oh no, here we go again. I turned back and began washing plates while Keiko's rant was ringing in the background-.
~CRASH~
The loud noise made me accidentally drop the plate and smash to the ground into million pieces. What just happened there?!
I rushed to the door and look inside the living room to see what Keiko did, only to meet with one magazine right in the face. Grunting under my breath I threw the magazine out of my face.
"I am going to have to come here almost every day or Yusuke won't have a body to come home too. " Keiko thought out loud, making me kind of feel a bit. . . well, left out because I was here as well. After all, it's my brother we are talking about. I inhaled through my nose and just went back doing the dishes. I stopped walking when I noticed the shattered pieces on the floor.
Oh, crap.
I began to pick up the pieces and threw it all into the trashcan. For God's sake, how are we going to clean up this whole mess?! And I also need to go get groceries for our dinner.
"Hey, Miyuki!" Keiko called, catching my attention. "I'll come back in an hour or so to help. I need to go shopping for my mom." She said so quickly that I had a hard time understanding it all sentence at one.
"Wait, Keiko!" I called after her, stopping her feet to carry her any further. "You said shopping?" I asked her with questioning eyes since that was the only thing that I managed to catch. Keiko nodded her head.
"Do you need anything?" She asked as I got on my feet fast.
"No, I'll come with you." I replied simply as I grabbed my backpack and that small waist bag full of kunai knives that I managed to put it onto me within a second. After that I grabbed the house keys and then lock the door.
The three ghostly figures watched as the two girls head out to the street.
"There, you see. Her feelings are really confused." Sayaka concluded as her pencil was dancing on the notebook's page.
"Ah, well of course they are." Botan said as her heart melted at the cute girl's action. "It's just young love isn't it Yusuke, you big cutie?" She said in a baby voice as one finger nudged the grumpy boy's head. Meanwhile and out of their view, someone turned out from the corner of the Urameshi household. No one can see his face, but by the siluette, the figure was a 'he'.
One of his handheld a can with full of unfamiliar substance a rag sticking out while the other had a cigarette lighter that lit up the rag. Putting the lighter away he slid open one of the house windows and without any second thoughts of his actions, he threw the flaming object inside the building. While bouncing up on the wooden floor the liquid began to pour out. In the end, it landed onto the magazines and soon enough the fire started to spread quicker.
The person left in a hurry but in his last seconds Yusuke, Sayaka, and Botan took notice of him.
"Who was that?" Yusuke asked as he watched the man leave. Within a few seconds or so, streams of black clouds make their way out of the open window.
"The house is on fire." Sayaka stated.
"I guess so. . ." Botan trailed off as she watched the whole thing unfold. It took all of them, especially Yusuke a good five seconds to realize what is happening.
"MY HOUSE IS ON FIRE!" Yusuke shouted in distress.
I felt something sharp hit me in the head. Like an ice cube landed on me. This is annoying as hell. . . What is wrong with me, and why do I keep having these gut feelings?!
"Is something wrong Miyu?" I hear my friend's concerned voice. I turned to her and just mutely shook my head-.
"Come on, let's go!" Someone shouted behind me as I received the items from the owner. Keiko and I turned around and we saw a few people running and shouting. "There is a fire in Forth- Chome Block!"
That very sentence mad my heart sinks down to my shoes. I turned to the direction they were heading. A big cloud of black smoke was flying up in the air, and it came from the area where my house is.
No, this can't be happening!
"But you live on Forth-Chome Block." Keiko chimed in. Without any question, My legs were carrying me as fast as possible all the way there, while I prayed to God to not take Yusuke away from me again. Sure, enough as we arrived there, a crowd people already gathering around our house and try to put out the fire with heir bucket of water. It didn't help the situation and the heat broke out one of our windows.
The saved attempt was all in waste as I feel my fear paralyzing my entire body. I had never felt so scared throughout my entire life. But this fear is not about me getting hurt. . . but more likely watching my brother's body turn into ashes when Keiko and I promised him that we will take care of it before he comes back.
I can't let this happen.
I already feel like a let down for not being able to save him. . .
My heart wouldn't bear it if I have to loose my big brother too.
"YUSUKE!" Both girls shouted as they dropped their grocery bags and other items off of them before pushing their way through the crowd of people.
"Interesting." Sayaka said as she pointed at Keiko and Miyuki. "The girls have come back." At that, Yusuke flew next to the younger spirit.
"Yeah, great!" Yusuke said but he was still not happy. In fact, he was angrier by the fact that people can't do much to save his body.
Meanwhile, Miyuki and Keiko finally got to the front, but people held them back. Keiko tried to explain that there was someone else in there, but they just kept insisting on how dangerous it is.
Miyuki turned back around and pulled her arms away from the strangers.
"Let me go cowards!" She shouted at the men who were taken aback by the young teen girl's sudden outburst. She didn't say anything after that and just rushed over to grab the bucket and threw the water onto herself. Keiko followed her suit and soon they were now at the entrance.
"Keiko, Miyuki don't!" Yusuke tried to tell them, but their minds were already made up.
Miyuki opened the door and run in, Keiko not far behind her. However, the odds weren't in their favour. The heat of the flames was so powerful that it almost knocked the two backward, but being determent to save Yusuke's body they held their grounds and run inside while covering their face to make sure nothing can hit them. During the entire action, Yusuke was trying to somewhat reach for them.
"Girls, forget about me!" Yusuke cried out in panic as he flew towards them, but it was no use. Keiko didn't hear it and Miyuki for once didn't sense him, because she blocked everything out and focused on getting Yusuke and Keiko out to safety.
"You two are a lot more important than I am!" The boy continued on, now desperate because he doesn't want his girls to end up dying because of him, but just like before, his pleading fall on deaf ears. "Don't be stupid! GO BACK!" He was now shouting louder. They were too important to him and by this point more important than his own life and body.
"You do know that without your body, you can't come back, don't you?" Sayaka reminded the teen spirit as she floated by his side, but what she heard next it took her by surprise.
"What's the point of being alive if Keiko and my sister have to be killed for it?!" Yusuke shouted, making the young investigator's eyes go wide. As the spirits try to find any solution for the problems the flames just grew larger and larger, not only reaching the ceiling but now it blocked the main entrance of the house.
"The fire is blocking the door." One of them said, just as a familiar orange-haired teen sprinted over the scene.
"I told those girls it was dangerous!" Another shouted which caught Kuwabara's attention.
"The Urameshis' house." He mumbled out loud as his stare was fixated on the dancing flames. Just then Sawamura butted in right next to his friend and leader.
"Kuwabara, they say Keiko and Miyuki are trapped inside!" He said that made Kuwabara's eyes fill themselves with terror.
"What?!" He asked as he grabbed a hold of his friend's collar. "You mean Urameshi's girlfriend and sister?" He asked now panicked. "The girls we saved from those thugs?"
"Yeah, I think." Sawamaru replied a bit shocked since Kuwabara would never grab his collar unless he is scared or worried. In this case, both of those were there.
With difficulties, the girls finally got through the flames and found Yusuke's body that is almost caught on fire if it wasn't for the blanket that was apparently protecting him.
"Yusuke!" Keiko coughed as she and the little sister hurried over and put the flames out on the blanket. The whole place began to crumble around them as they lifted up the blanket and cover Yusuke's entire body with it. Each of his arms rested around one girls' shoulder who were now all set to leave.
"Here we go!" Keiko said with a small hoarse voice as she and her friend began to pull the boy's body. Unfortunately, a huge piece fell from above them and it just fed the flames more. Their only exit had been blocked. Then another piece fell off but it managed to hit Miyuki's left shoulder.
She screamed in pain and almost let go of her brother, but she stood her ground, even with those flames that began to damage the surface of her skin.
"Miyuki!" Keiko cried out as she watched those small flames spreading on her friend's entire sleeve.
"I'm okay Keiko!" Miyuki replied quickly as she tried to endure the pain on her entire left arm. "Let's just find a way out!" She shouted as she tried to look for something. Anything. She didn't care about what will happen to her. She is mostly worried about what will happen to her friend and brother. Yusuke watched the whole thing unfold helplessly while his body was shaking with anger. He turned to Botan for help who was just as hopeless as she was at this point.
"Botan, please, there is got to be something that I can do." Yusuke shouted, wanting to help the girls so badly somehow.
"I'm sorry Yusuke, I tried everything in my power. . ." Botan apologized with a heavy heart. She never wanted this to happen.
"There is one way." Sayako spoke up which caught both of her spirit companion's attention. "But you may not be willing to do it." Not wanting to waste more time Yusuke flew over to the investigator's face.
"I'll decide that for myself! Tell me!" He demanded.
"You can save their lives by using the power that's been gathered by the spirit beast, you had been carrying with you." Sayaka said.
"What?" Asked the boy in disbelief as he pulled out the small golden egg. "You mean this little guy?"
"Throw it in the fire and it will unleash from the egg and save both girls." Sayaka continued on.
"And that's all I have to do." Yusuke felt his anger bubble up to the surface since this could have done the job earlier. "Why didn't you say so?" He asked.
"But, if you hatch the spirit beast now before it's ready, it won't be able to perform its usual duties. " Sayaka quickly explained, but with more seriousness in her eyes as the atmosphere became heavier. Yusuke didn't get it at first, but the young Grim Reaper girl did.
"So does that mean, if he saves Keiko's and Miyuki's life, the beast won't be able to bring Yusuke back?" She finally asked the question.
"Right." Sayaka answered as she turned aside glance to her co-worker before turning back to the spirit teen. "Yusuke will never have a chance to be alive in this world again."
Yusuke's eyes go wide as his ears can hear the time ticking.
'So my life or theirs. . . ' He asked as he turned from the investigator and looked at the egg in his hand. His only chance to be able to come back to the people he loves, but if he doesn't choose right now, they will die right in front of him. "Wish someone had told me this morning that I'd make this kind of choice." He said before turning to the spirit girls.
"Your time is short I'm afraid. " The young investigator reminded him. He needs to make this decision quick before the girls will be gone for good.
"Well, it was a good dream. . . " He breathed before turning around and aim the magical object at the girls. "KEIKO! MIYUKI!" He cried out their names as he threw the egg into the wildfire.
Something clicked within me. That damn feeling along with the voices. Not again, especially not at a time like this.
Suddenly and unexpectedly, a flash of blue and white lights blinded my vision. I had to cover my eyes with my injured arm to keep myself from going completely blind.
But then I later on felt. . . different. . . The temperature of the whole house didn't feel as threatening as before.
I lowered my arm to see what is happening and to my complete shock, I saw something that I was beyond against everything that I had learned or believed.
The flames that were once aggressive and dangerous orange and red, they were now calming and warmheartedly white and blue. The aura surrounding us felt more protecting and welcoming than deadly and destructive. But what really got my attention was the flames that once blocked us they have now parted away, creating a path that would lead us to the door. Our exit.
"Can this be. . . real?" I hear Keiko murmur to my right. I shook my head violently to snap myself out of the trance. Now, this is our chance. Keiko and I started to move forward with Yusuke in the middle.
Yusuke. . . I can't believe it. This is his doing. He must be the one that rescued us. . .
My train of thought was interrupted when I hear someone shouting for us. I looked at the door to see a familiar figure. It was Kuwabara. He rushed inside and helped us carrying Yusuke to the outside.
I can't describe the feelings that had been swimming inside my heart at the very moment our feet stepped over that doorframe.
All I can say that I felt the whole package washing over me all at once. We did it. We saved Yusuke and Keiko is also okay. So was Kuwabara.
"Typical." Kuwabara spat angrily. "Now the fire trucks arrive." I can't help but curse under my breath in silence and agreement. It was so true, those idiots arrive when it's almost too late.
"Miyuki, you should go to the ambulance immediately. Your arm needs treatment." Keiko reminded me. That's right, I had completely forgotten about the whole burning injury.
I took a good look at it. My sleeve is gone, but the wound doesn't seem that critical, however, I don't say it looks pretty either.
"Hey, what do you got under that blanket anyway?" Kuwabara suddenly asked making me and Keiko look at him a bit awkwardly. Before we can even say a word, the Carrot Head already pulled off of the blanket that covered Yusuke's face. A scream escaped through his throat as the shock probably weakened his legs because the next thing, I knew he landed on his butt. "What are you doing with Yusuke's body?!" He stammered out the question as he pointed one accusing finger towards our direction. "Are you two some type of sick grave robbers?"
"I promise I will tell you everything, but not right now." Keiko began as she covered my brother's face back.
"Keiko is right, we need to get him somewhere safe." I added quickly as I slowly got up to my feet.
"Well, come on!" Kuwabara shouted as he swung Yusuke's body over his shoulder and grabbed a hold of my good hand. "We can't let the police get a hold of you two." And then we all began running away somewhere, I don't know where but it's better than being near the crime scene.
Night-time had already fallen and during this entire time, we were at Kazuma's household. There we met Shizuru who helped me with my injury and Keiko with her hair. After our treamtents we began explaining everything to Kuwabara. His sister also called both my mother and Keiko's parents to tell them about our whereabouts and that everything is alright. Mom eventually arrived and even borrowed a wheelchair from someone she knows to bring Yusuke's body easily. I have no idea how she got it but I didn't even question it at that moment.
Our house is gone now but at least my brother's body is in one piece while Keiko and Kuwabara made it out alive along with me.
"I am so sorry to put all three of you, kids, at risk today. " Atsuko apologized as she looked down shamefully. "Just because I was out at one of my stupid escapades." She then looked at the two of us with sadness in her eyes. "Keiko your hair. . . and Miyuki, your arm." I can see a small tear building up in the corner of her eyes.
"It's alright mother." I told her with a soft tone but my face now went back to its usual blank state. "The important thing is Yusuke's body is safe."
"She is right Atsuko." Keiko nodded her head with a small smile. "When we were there, we saw roads of white and blue fires all mixed up together, and leading us out. It was like a big explosion and we were surrounded by his presence. " She then looked down at my big brother with softened eyes. "Yusuke saved us because he knows he is returning."
"I still can't believe it!" Kuwabara said as he got right into Yusuke's face with a humongous grin on his face. "Yusuke you old rascal." I can't help but let a small smirk slip at that, which thankfully no one saw it.
Yeah, my brother is one of the kind.
"Oh son, sorry about that fire, but you're okay now at least, right? " My mother asked him even though he wouldn't answer to her-.
I feel my injured shoulder burning a little, making me clutch onto it. I grunted under my breath as I grit my teeth to at least ease myself from that pain.
Is this normal?
But then I hear a very-very familiar voice shouting in the distance. . . but above my head. I tore my attention away from my arm and looked up to see. . . ghosts?
One had sky blue like hair and was sitting on a paddle wearing a pink kimono. To her right, there was a child-like spirit in blue clothing and the third one. . . .
"Yusuke. . .?" I breathed under my breath so quietly that it almost sounded like it came from a mouse.
I don't know what he was screaming but the sight before my very eyes,. . . . I had no words to say anymore. Nothing makes sense to me now, but one thing for sure, this must not be a coincidence. The cause of my senses and those gut feelings, it was all because I was able to sense this lucky bastard's presence.
But why now and how come I didn't manage to see this earlier, or feel it. . . ?
In the end, Yusuke got another chance to get his old life back, although he had used his only ticket to save the people he cares about the most. He was of course overjoyed by the whole news but little did both he and Miyuki know that they were about to get themselves into something that they never would have guessed, even in their wildest dreams.
