Chapter Five
Chief Petty Officer Donny James standing in his quarters was waiting for his watch to begin after using his short wave radio to let them know the position of the SEAVIEW racing to reach the scientists at the ice basin. He was afraid to be caught with sending the coded message to the undersea lab built during the past few years under the deep ice of Alaska and for where they had been drilling to cause the faultline to shift.
Chief Petty Officer receiving a brief message was told to continue on with his work to observe until they reach the coordinates. But in the meantime at the radioshack with Sparks Sergeant Anthony Davi was trying to figure out what the hell was going on with his board. He was able to figure out that the strange coded message was coming somewhere on board the Seaview.
He was able to call over Captain Morton speaking with Commander Hennessey working on the bridge with Executive Officer Stu Riley unable to make it in time for the trip due to his wife was in labor with their third child.
"What's is it Sparks?" Morton needed to ask about the importance of knowing what is going on board the submarine.
"Sir there has been an unauthorized coded message received from someone on board the Seaview. I was able to figure out that it's coming from someone on this vessel. But I can't figure it out with something new for the books. I will see what communications can do with breaking the code down Captain."
"Let me know it continues. And if it does Sparks send someone to trace it?" he ordered before heading back to the plot table with the commander about the situation. He turned to face the Commander. Do you happened to know just where is Commander Lee Crane?"
"No sir. I don't!" he said with checking the charts to make sure their position was correct with the navigational computer."
Picking up the mike from behind him. "Will Commander Lee Crane come to the Control room. It's a number one priority," he says with a deep breath.
Commander Lee Crane was coming out of the Officer's mess. When he heard the page. He walked over to the intercom on the wall as he picks it up. "This is Crane. I am on my way, Captain Morton."
Meanwhile in the Control Room with Morton receiving the message. Commander Stanley Kowalski working this particular watch was standing behind his brother noticing a strange bleep on the screen. "Is it a submarine?" HE ASKED HIS BROTHER.
"It does look like it's been tailing us the past hour," he said with his brother calling over Morton to let him know.
"What is it Kowalski?" he asks with concern with his demeanor seeing Lee coming down the spiral stairwell wondering just what is going on.
"Sir there is some type of submarine following us playing hide and seek," Kowalski speaks with his brother noticing it.
"Damn! Torpedo heading our way port side..." he cries out with Morton ordering navigation to make the change along with the missile room to be ready to fire a missile.
It was at this time that the automatic general quarters started to Blair all over the submarine. While crewmembers coming down the stairwell and aft entrance were heading for their positions along with security a new rule to have security in the Control room.
"Whew! that was close," Morton said asking Commander Kowaksi asking him. Then all of a sudden another missile heading port side once again. "MISSILE ROOM FIRE TORPEDO'S 1, 3,2, AND FOUR in order now."
"This is Sharkey understand the order. Firing now!" he said over the intercom with Morton telling everyone to hang on and including Lee Crane knowing what the hell is going on right now.
There was an enormous explosion with the aftershock coming their way to hit them 20 seconds later to knock everyone around inside the Control Room with Morton falling to the floor with Crane helping him up.
"What the hell was all that Chip?" Crane needed to know for his own report.
"Maybe it has something to do with the unauthorize coded message we received. No doubt from the now destroyed submarine and whatever company it was from Lee. Sparks received it earlier. Even though communications haven't been unable to break down the new code. However, I have the radioshack to keep tabs of it in case it happens again along with a tractor." Morton had given him his report.
"Okay keep me updated. Are we still on track with getting to the Ice basin?" he commented with turning to look around the CONTROL Room with basically all of the same crew for when he was Captain of the Seaview.
"We are. I had checked the navigational computer only twenty minutes earlier. And I will go check it again. "Patterson please give me an update on our position?"
He turned to check the position by taking down the coordinates wth giving them to Captain Morton was pleased with the results. "Here you go sir," he said with handing him the position.
"We're right on the mark Lee and should be reaching the ice basin in two days at best. This all depends on whether we will have any further trouble with attacks and coded messages," he said with rubbing the back of his neck having a stress headache needing a break. "Commander Kowalski I am going to take a break. Please take over for me until I get back. If anything happens please let me know" he cried out.
"Sure sir." Commander Kowalski had to say to him with watching the screen that his brother was making adjustments with the screen.
Meanwhile, Lee asked his friend whether or not he can join him for a cup of coffee. "Okay," he said to Lee with climbing the spiral stairwell.
