Chapter 5

Meanwhile, at the actual Beacon Hill house, Maura's phone was ringing as it was approaching 9pm. She received a text from Jack, earlier, stating that he was going to stay and visit with his ex-wife for a while and help Ally get settled back in. Maura didn't mind and she was looking forward to some alone time. That text was at 6pm. Since then, she stopped by her office to tie up a few things, knowing that she'd be consumed with her Isles' foundation responsibilities, probably all weekend long, made herself dinner and replied to some emails. She was looking forward to a hot bath and a glass of wine. But first she had to answer the phone. She saw on the caller I.D. it was Jack.

"Hello Jack. Are you alright?"

"Yes. Sorry I didn't call or text sooner, but the power was out here. Everything was down. Just came back on now. I'm afraid I won't be back tonight. It's really piling up, here...the snow. Streets and highways are closed. Airplanes grounded. They're expecting another 6 to 12 inches overnight, here in New York. How's it by you?"

Maura went to peer out the front window, but it was pretty dark, so she decided to go to the kitchen and open the back door. As she did so, the security light went on, an added feature that Jane insisted she should get. The wind was frigid and swirling the snow around, causing more of a buildup. Maura could tell there was three inches of snow by deducting the six inch flower pots she failed to bring inside months ago. Snow reached half a pot. Maura didn't like to guess as those close to her knew so well.

"It's three inches, Jack. Still snowing. Perhaps Angela was right? I haven't checked the news. I've been preoccupied with work. Would you like me to check?"

"No, that's alright. Just be safe. Angela may have been onto something. I just should have listened. I'll call you in the morning with results. Sorry, darling."

"What's an apology for? You can't control the weather. It's all science...love. You be safe as well."

Jack chuckled and replied, "You would say that. I should know better. Goodnight darling. I love you."

"Goodnight Jack...love you too."

Maura charged up her phone, started a bath, lit some candles and grabbed some wine. She pinned up her hair, stripped naked and set aside a thick cotton white bath towel. As Maura dipped her feet into the bubbled filled hot water, she decided to turn the jets on, to get the full effect. It's been a while since Dr. Maura Isles pampered herself, and tonight was the night. No need for yoga. This...this rhythmic soothing of warm jets messaging her body, the combinations of vanilla scented candles and lilac soap invaded her olfactory system. She slowly descended into the water. Soap bubbles cuddling her dynamite figure. She worked hard for her body. As a doctor, she knew if she took great care of her health, skin and bones, she would be rewarded in many, many ways. Maura closed her eyes and drifted away. Stress be gone!
