CHAPTER FIVE: He's your father

"You say he's hurt?"

"We stopped some teenage boys punching him."

"Hmm... He doesn't look so good."

"Hardy will think that I punched him up," Caine muttered as he put a cold cloth on the unconscious fifteen year old who laid on the bed.

"Isn't that good?"

"No! It's not. Hardy won't trust me. So he fainted?"

"Yeah, after we got rid of the kids, he fell unconscious, boss." One of the main goons replied.

"...At least we didn't have to gag him or something..."

"That's good, boss,"

"The kid needs to rest." The goons left and few minutes later someone knocked on the hotel room door.

"Who is it?" Caine asked as the kid began to stir and mumble something. "Be quiet, kid."

"Its me," Xavier said from the other side of the door. "You said Shaun is waiting for me?"

"Yes, he is." Caine walked to the door and unlocked it. The millionaire walked inside and gasped when he saw the boy on the bed.

"Shaun? How did he get here? Why does he have a cut on his forehead?" Xavier shot the questions extremely fast.

"He is doing fine... I was going to get your son but I saw some bullies fighting with him so I saved him and brought him here."

"Oh... Poor boy..."

"Unfortunately he was unconscious so he does not know that we saved him."

"So he might be confused at first," Xavier realized. Caine nodded and inwardly smiled. At this time the school would probably notify the Hardys and Revenge Day would just be starting.

"Well."

Joe's vision started to clear until he saw a man who looked about his parents' ages and another man who just looked strange. Why was he here? He bolted upward, pain aching in his ribs and head but the man's hand stopped him before going any further.

"Who are you? Why am I here?" He demanded. Had he been kidnapped? He noticed that he wasn't wearing anything that tied him together.

"Joe, calm down," The strange man soothed but it didn't help. How did he know his name?

"Why do you know my name?"

"Look, I found you getting beat up by those jerks. I saved you."

"Jack," Joe muttered. His memories flooded back...including the pain.

"I'm Evan Caine and this is your father, Xavier."

"Why would you tell all these LIES to everybody, Cathy?!" Frank shouted angrily in the very quiet hallway. He rarely got angry but his was one of those times. They were supposed to be in their class...but they were not.

"He HAS to be adopted! Can't you tell?" Cathy Kennedy was sixteen (Frank's age), red haired, and all the guys at school were drooling over her but not the oldest, wise, logical dark haired Frank Hardy. Unfortunately, Cathy was interested in HIM and that really didn't suit him well since he already had a girlfriend.

"Cathy, some of the jocks bullied Joe yesterday and he got hurt." Cathy pouted and shrugged.

"Sorry, but I really have to get to the next class." Frank grabbed her by the arm.

"Where is Joe?"

"Where would I know?"

"Come on, Cathy! Please tell me. I need to find him!" Cathy sighed and rolled her eyes, annoyed at the sleuth.

"Look, Frank. I'll tell you the story. I met this private detective a week ago and he started asking about Joe Hardy and all that stuff."

"And?"

"I told him some of the stuff I knew so I would get him stop asking questions." Cathy inhaled rubbing her forehead. "He told me to spy on him."

"And you did?"

"Yeah, through you. He paid me. I really didn't want to accept the money but I had to."

"Why? Did he threaten you?"

"Yeah," Cathy flushed. "...Do you know who Nate Caine is?" Frank nodded hoping what she was going to say next was not what he thought ...but it was...

"He violated my mom years ago." Frank paled. "And he had videotaped every single bit of it...and somehow this Evan guy found it."

"I am so sorry, Cathy," She shrugged and wiped her eyes with her arm.

"I know...I didn't mean to like tell lies or anything...it was just that..."

"...He said that he was going to send the videotape to your dad, right?" Frank interjected.

"Uh huh," Frank pulled her into a hug and after a few moments he let go. "I hope you find him."

"Me too."

Frank pulled out his cell phone and texted Joe as fast as he could.

"My what?! My dad is Fenton Hardy!" Joe sat up and folded his arms over his chest. "I'm Joe Hardy."

"You're not legally a Hardy, Joe,"

"What?" Caine sighed and looked at him. "I don't believe this. I'm going to be late for school."

"You'll hurt yourself!" Xavier insisted. Joe got up from the bed and clutched his stomach. Bruises probably. Joe thought. I need to get out of here... Strange... Why are they letting me go?

"Joe, we have evidence that you are Xavier's son." Caine said firmly. Joe rolled his eyes and didn't care. He painfully walked to the hotel door.

"Your real name is Shaun Stevenson and I am your real father." Xavier. Just like the limo's license plate. Joe turned around and looked at him.

"You were at my house, weren't you?"

"Yes, we were."

"...You do know you could be arrested for breaking and entering."

"But we didn't steal anything."

"Ugh! I'm getting out of here." Joe turned the doorknob about to step out of the hotel room.

"But I have proof right here. Evidence. Look at it for yourself, Joseph." Caine walked up to the teenager and handed him the file.

"I don't care. You're bluffing. You just want revenge for your brother who was killed by my dad." Joe spat.

"Joseph!" Xavier scolded.

He cannot be my father. Dad and Mom would tell me if I was adopted. Another thought came to the amateur detective. But don't you remember all those cases where the parents wouldn't tell the kids that they were adopted? It usually ruined the family's relationship forever. Forever. Joe's heart pounded as loud as a drum and he took the cream colored file into his hands. There was pictures of him, Frank, Dad...his whole family... A Ziploc baggie with a strand of hair that looked oddly familiar...His hair!

"Look familiar?" Caine asked with a small smile.

"So that's why you went into my room?"

"Yes, well, I didn't. Stanton took it." Joe flipped through the papers and looked at Xavier who was looking at him like he really thought Joe was his son.

"How do I know if this is fake?"

"If you don't believe me...then look at the DNA samples...perfect matches to your mother, Shannon." Joe suddenly turned the doorknob and ran out of the hotel room.

"Hey! What?!" Joe ran into the elevator and pressed the first floor button. Happily, the elevator was close to the hotel room so he didn't have go very far.

"C'mon, c'mon! Close, will ya?! Please!" He groaned as a sharp pain went through him. The elevator's doors started to close when Caine and a few of large guys started to run to him. "Great." It closed. He leaned back his head and let out a sigh of relief. He then noticed that a couple was standing there, blinking in shock.

"Oh, sorry," He mumbled. "Go ahead...and do what you were doing..." The girl giggled as the boyfriend kissed her again.
