A CHANGE OF HEART

Summary: Cornelius Rhodes likes control. But when it comes to his son and his new girlfriend, nothing he does can break the young couple. And when things start getting serious he has to choose whether to keep messing with their lives or to finally accept his son's choice.

A/N: My first Rheese story. I've only recently started to watch Chicago Med and I have to say I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I do. Having said that, I just die for all the Connor/Sarah scenes, and this little story wouldn't leave me alone for the past few days. So here I am, adding to all the other great Rheese stories in this site.

Last chapter and I'm already writing another story:

Summary: Sarah's mother died giving birth to her little sister and her father left them. Sarah, being still underage, pretended the baby was hers so she wouldn't be taken into foster care. Years later, Sarah is a med student starting her new job at Chicago Med nearly at the same time as Dr. Connor Rhodes. Sparks fly between them until he finds out she has a child and probably a partner. But what happens when Sarah's father returns to claim his child and Sarah has to do anything to avoid being separated from her? And what would Connor do to help her achieve it?

What do you think? I'm quite excited with that story, though I have several other ideas

P.S.: Sorry in advance for any mistake, English is not my native language.

Chapter 5: Besotted

.

.

The desperate noises attracted much attention and soon enough there were people working of opening the elevator. Once opened, Cornelius continued shouting, this time for someone to come help Sarah.

The nurses instantly recognized her as one of their own and one of them hurried to find a wheelchair while the other two rushed to help the young woman, who by now was breathing raggedly and was as pale as a sheet.

"Sarah… Sarah…" - Cornelius kept calling her name, trying to get her to stay awake. They finally brought a wheelchair and the nurses sat her on it carefully, hurrying her to the maternity ward. Meanwhile, Cornelius asked for someone to contact his son immediately, running behind his daughter-in-law to make sure that the hospital staff were taking proper care of her. She had just been changed into a hospital gown when the OB, Dr. Patchefsky, entered the room, checking her quickly and ordering a nurse to have the delivery room prepped for him, worried about the bleeding. Cornelius kept calling for them to do whatever was needed to make sure both mother and baby were fine and they were just wheeling her out of the room when Connor appeared, out of breath, clearly having ran all the way there.

"Sarah! What happened?" – he asked the OB, holding one of his fiancé's hands.

"She's bleeding profusely and the baby seems to be in distress. We need to deliver the baby now." – Dr. Patchefsky told him.

"It's not time, Connor. It's too small. It's not time." - Sarah cried, holding onto his hand, terrified something would happen to her child.

"We need to hurry, Dr. Rhodes." - The other doctor reminded him, still pushing the bed. As terrified as he was, Connor knew he was right. Otherwise, he could lose them both.

"It's gonna be okay, darling. Everything will be fine, you'll see." - He reassured her, needing to keep her calm, even when he was more scared that he had ever been in his life.

They got to the delivery room and one of the nurses stopped him, telling him they would call him in once they had everything ready for the delivery. Connor tried to push his way through, but his father held him back.

"Calm down, Connor." – he repeated over and over.

"What happened? What did you do to her? did you tell her something?" – Connor turned around and faced his father, convinced he had had something to do with Sarah being rushed to deliver their child.

"Nothing. We were talking when the elevator stopped and suddenly she started bleeding." – he explained. – "She was rushed here as soon as they could open the door."

"Dad..." – Connor was just about to crumble at his father's words. This couldn't be happening. Not when they were so close to welcoming their baby.

"Hey, hey, Connor. Listen to me, son. Everything is going to be alright." – the man held his son's shoulders, looking him straight into his eyes. – "Sarah and the baby are going to be okay, do you understand me?"

"But…"

"They are going to be fine. She's young and strong and it that child is anything like her, he or she is going to be a fighter. Nothing will happen to them." – Connor was stunned by his father's words, but at that moment they were exactly what he needed to hear. – "Now take a deep breath and let's wait until they let you in." As soon as he said that, the nurse took him inside to change.

Before entering, he looked at his father one more time, receiving a nod form the man.

Two hours later, Connor found his father in the chapel, sitting all alone.

"Hey." - He whispered, sitting next to him.

"How…?"

"They are both doing perfect." – he interrupted.

"I'm glad." – Cornelius exclaimed, finally feeling like he could breathe. – "I'm really glad."

"Would you like to see them?" - Connor offered.

"Yes, please." - Cornelius accepted after a minute of simply looking at his son, trying to decipher if he really wanted him in the same room as his family or not.

They walked slowly towards Sarah's room, and when they entered, they saw the young woman still awake and cradling her newborn child in her arms.

"Connor." - She sighed, watching him come through the door and smiling at him.

"Hey, you." – he kissed her and carefully sat next to her on the bed, looking at the baby in amazement. It was his child. Half of him and Sarah that would link them together forever.

"Hello, Sarah." - Cornelius greeted the woman.

Sarah and Connor exchanged a look before both turned to at the man once again.

"Hello, Cornelius. Would you like to meet your granddaughter?" – she said with a little smile directed at the older man, who could only nod at the offer, walking closer to the bed.

Sarah passed her daughter to Connor, who stood up and slowly moved towards his father, looking at the little girl in his arms with love before laying her on her grandfather's arms.

And as soon as he held the baby girl in his arms and looked into her pretty blue eyes, Cornelius Rhodes fell in love.

*One year later*

"Hey, babe, I thought you were coming with Beth so we could go to the park." – Connor greeted his fiance. This was their first day off in a month and she had decided they would go to the park to enjoy the summer time. He had just had to come to the hospital to check on some of his patients, but he was now ready to leave.

"That was the plan, yes." - She said, kissing him and suppressing a smile. – "Of course, we didn't count on her being kidnapped this morning."

"Again?" – Connor shook his head, laughing.

"Yes. Apparently, we both have terrible taste and your father wants to make sure his little princess has a whole new wardrobe approved by him."

"Did he really say that?" - Both were too amused to be angry or even offended at his father's remark.

"Actually, he wrote it. He didn't even have the decency to wake me up before taking her for the day." – she took a piece of paper out of her coat and gave it to him.

I am taking little Beth with me today.

It's time for her to start dressing according to her status.

Cornelius

"Yeah, he totally said we have horrible taste." – Connor commented, pocketing the note. – "Then again, I did fall in love with you, so I'm confident I actually have exquisite taste." – he said, winking at her playfully.

"Flatterer." They walked into the doctor's lounge so he could get changed.

"I really shouldn't have given him a key to our house." – he stated after putting his things in his locker.

From the moment Cornelius had meet Beth, he had been so besotted with his first grandchild, he had bought a house for the young couple so they could raise her in a place where she could have all the free space she needed to play. Connor and Sarah had tried to argue, but in the end Sarah saw how the man behaved around her baby and didn't have the heart to tell him no. Besides, having the man around so often had forced Connor to spend more time with him and both had started to heal after so many years apart.

"Remind me again why you did that?" - She joked, both now walking towards the exit hand in hand.

"No idea." - They got to their car, but before she could get in, he crowded her against the passenger door. – "But since he's keeping her for the day, maybe we could have some grown up time, don't you think?" – he suggested, kissing her neck. Sarah arched into him, rubbing herself against him, making him grab her her tighter by the hips.

"We are supposed to meet with the wedding planner this afternoon." – Sarah reminded him, barely coherent. She loved when Connor kissed her neck. It never failed to turn her on.

Connor nearly groaned in frustration. Another thing Cornelius had organized was for them to work with a wedding planner for their upcoming nuptials. They would have preferred to have a simpler, more private wedding, but once his father had told Claire, she hadn't rested until both had agreed to a much bigger one. It had been a nightmare at first, but they had been able to reach a compromise. And a part of Connor knew that even Sarah, who would have been happy having a small wedding, was excited to have a fairy tale one. And he was happy to be able to give it to her and thankful for his father and sister for making her wish come true.

"Then we'd better hurry." - He whispered into her ear, biting her earlobe and delighting in feeling her shiver.

"You're on, Rhodes." – she said, lowering her hand to his manhood and squeezing him before jumping into the car.

Needless to say, Connor got them home and into bed in record time.
