The next day David felt far better than the day before, with no more nausea or fatigue. He was like a new man ready to take on the case with vigor.
"Morning," Rossi greeted Gibbs as he walked back into their room with two cups of black coffee. He had managed to find his way back to the mess decks and wardroom by memory alone and grabbed them both coffee.
Gibbs gave his usual morning grunt of pre-coffee greeting and grabbed his cup from the FBI agent. Jethro didn't do much after that besides sip on his coffee and stare at the bulkhead in concentrated thought.
"I'll wait till you finish that, then we can get started," Rossi told the other man with a hint of amusement. All he received was a nod of thanks as they both sat at the desks and drank their first cup of the morning.
Once they had both finished Rossi spoke again, "ENS Bartha has set up to have QM3 Nejara come here to be interviewed at 0900, after sweepers. In the meantime it seems the Unsub hasn't struck again. What have we got so far?"
Gibbs nodded along and waited for Dave to finish before speaking himself, "This QM3 is looking more and more like our killer. He was reduced in rank due to infidelity and his wife divorced him. Seems she was also cheating on him through but the command took her side. He was having an affair with an FC2's wife by the looks of it."
Rossi nodded along and more than agreed they needed to seriously check out this QM3.
At exactly 0900 ENS Bartha knocked with QM3 right behind her. The young man seemed appropriately nervous for a singled out interview with two federal agents.
"Petty Officer Nejara, come on in," Gibbs greeted him in the most fake friendly way Rossi had ever heard.
The young man came in and stood awkwardly near the door ENS Bartha had closed as she left.
"Take a seat," Rossi told the kid gesturing to Gibbs' desk chair. Jethro stood next to Rossi with an almost predatory air radiating off him.
"Giovanni correct?" Gibbs asked the man.
"Yes, sir," came Gio's nervous reply.
"Giovanni, it seems to be that you are the only valid connection between each couple and their deaths. All the wives were murdered before deployment and the husbands, your colleges, were murdered just before leaving," Rossi laid out the facts, "On top of the fact that you lost a lot from your own infidelity along with your wife's, you are the person who ratted all of your shipmates out."
"I didn't kill them I swear!" Gio told them in a panic. He really hadn't, he promised.
"You have an ability for the murders?" Gibbs asked as he stood a little straighter.
"When were they?"
"January 8th, 23rd, and 29th the wives were killed. While February 5th, 12th and 19th the husbands were killed," David told him. "All Wednesdays."
"Well the 8th I was on duty on the ship, the 22nd I was at home…" he hesitated realizing it wasn't much of an alibi. "I did the same on the 29th, the 5th I was on duty, the 12th I worked till 2200, and the 19th I duty swapped with HT3 Herps," Gio told them both anxious about possible reactions.
"We'll be checking those out," Gibbs warned.
"Yes, s-sir," the kid stuttered.
"So Giovanni…" Rossi started, "tell me about the two FCs and the GM who were killed."
"Well they liked to jump each other and other guys in their division… Two of them played this weird instrument… a ocarina I think it's called? They cheated on their wives, not that I'm any less guilty of that," the QM3 told them.
"What else?" Gibbs pressed sternly.
"Um. I don't know? They all hated each other and would talk shit the second anyone left the room. It was a dysfunctional division to say the least with emphasis on the dysfunctional part. Everyone knew it even if the Captain loved them. He let one of the GMs call him daddy! I mean are you serious?" Gio told them, getting increasingly irritated as he spoke.
"Did the Captain show other kinds of favoritism towards the division or just these three?" Rossi asked now wondering if the affairs were just a coincidence considering it seemed wide spread across the ship.
"He let them bring their wives on board a few times for far more than to just "show them around.""
"So you would say this made people jealous of them?" David asked, wondering if they had really been that far off on the profile.
"Well yeah, everyone was pissed, even their own guys," Gio told them both.
John Mayer's "Daughters" started playing in the background catching Rossi's attention. He hit, end-call quickly on the laptop, "Sorry you were saying?"
"A lot of people were jealous of these guys," Gio finished.
"Alright, thank you. You can go now," David told him turning back to and calling his daughter back without another word. It had to be important because the team had to have given her access to call him at all.
"Hey dad," Joy's less than happy voice came through the speakers.
"Joy what's wrong?"
"Kai is sick dad."
Rossi's heart dropped into his stomach, "How sick?"
"Bad cough, had to take him to the hospital for breathing treatments. He's okay now but I wanted you to know now instead of later," she told him.
"But he's okay right?" Rossi asked, still worried, wanting nothing more than to go to California then and there to just cuddle his grandson on the couch and watch movies. He needed to know he was okay, know he was going to be okay.
"He's resting at home with Shawn," Joy assured him.
"Okay. Thank you for letting me know at least. Tell him I love him and I'll see him as soon as we get back," David told her.
"Love you dad," Joy said as she got ready to get off.
"Love you too kiddo," Rossi replied with a small smile as the screen went black.
"Kai?" Gibbs asked as he sat across from Dave.
"My grandson. He's nine years old," David explained as he took a deep breath to calm himself.
"He okay?"
"Should be. Joy seems to think he will," the Italian told him as he stood and shoved his hands in his front pockets. Rossi wasn't quite sure what to do now, they had a killer to catch yet his worry over his grandson was eating at him.
