Author Notes - Yes, this story still exists! Sorry, but I keep forgetting how fast time is going.
Alright, now we're up to a big one. This one isn't necessarily sticking to the format of the show, moreso the genre. If there's one thing that Bubble Guppies is known for more than its sketch format, it would be the music. Also known as, one of my favourite parts of the entire show.
You know all those amazing songs? Australia, A Colour Just Right, Let It Grow, A Job I Can Do For You, Geography, whatever-song-happens-to-be-your-favourite... I think it's about time we see how it all began.
CHAPTER FIVE - LET'S SING ABOUT IT!
According to Mr Grouper, the time after going outside would be dedicated to getting ready for that day's field trip.
'Field trip?' Deema asked. 'Why would we want to visit a field every day?'
Once Nonny explained to her what a field trip was, all the Guppies were excited for whatever trips they would go on. Alas, since it was just their first day of school Mr Grouper couldn't really plan anything for them. Despite the slight disappointment, it did not ruin the kids' excitement for the future. Since they didn't have a field trip to go on, their teacher allowed for another period of free play.
Most of them had returned to what they were doing before. Gil and Goby went back to their impressive castle, doing a few small repairs on it caused by that Friendship-Eating Dragon who thought she was a Castle-Eating Dragon.
'We should be glad we were just up against a dragon.' Goby said, building up a little stable for the royal horses.
Gil chuckled as he worked on the moat. 'What could possibly be worse than a dragon?'
'Maybe something like a ... Pretzelquatel, a snake capable of flight! Or maybe even a Gorillagator, a creature that's half-gorilla and half-alligator!'
Gil shuddered. He began to wonder if, perhaps, Goby had a bit too much imagination.
Deema and Oona finally got around to drawing something together with their box of crayons, sitting at a table practically made for drawing. Deema went a little crazy with the red crayon, scribbling it like mad to create red 'frames' around the edge of her paper, before she switched to the yellow one. Luckily for her, it wasn't her drawing arm that got hurt. Oona simply stuck with the pink crayon, using it to draw the most adorable pink kitty you have ever seen.
'What are ya drawing, Oona?' Deema asked, swirling her yellow crayon around in circles.
'A cute little kitty!' Oona replied. 'What about you?'
'I'm drawing the most beautiful thing I can think of.'
Oona leaned over to peep at her drawing. 'Uh... it kinda looks like you.'
'Exactly!'
Nonny returned to reading his dinosaur book, but this time it was the one he brought with him. He much preferred that one - it correctly depicted the dinosaurs as being feathered beasts. Plus, it had way more dinos in it, much more than your usual three.
Molly, with nothing else to do, rejoined him in reading. This time, she grabbed a book of fairy tales. A maiden so fair, a wolf, three bears, a girl with long golden hair... she would love to be in a fairy tale, preferably not one of the many that ended badly for its heroes. She really couldn't concentrate on her book, though. All she could focus on was the other kids. Deema and Oona drawing... Goby and Gil building... Nonny reading... they all enjoyed it, which was great, but something seemed off compared to the 'Friendship-Eating-Dragon' fiasco.
Everyone was separated once again.
'That isn't right...' She muttered.
'What isn't right?' Nonny asked.
Molly flinched. With how quiet Nonny was, as always, she had forgotten he was sitting right next to her.
'This is our first day of school!' Molly said. 'Why aren't we doing anything together? Yeah, there was the dragon thing, but that was it. When the only other time we got together was when Deema got hurt, that really doesn't seem right.'
Nonny shrugged. 'Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves.'
'And that's fine! I just wish there was something else that we could do together...'
'I'm sure you'll think of something. Like Gil said, I think you were more deserving of being the oldest. Albeit, in a metaphorical sense.'
Molly cocked an eyebrow. 'In a what sense?'
'N-Never mind.'
Though Molly had no idea what Nonny just said, she kinda agreed. No offence to Deema, but she didn't really seem like the leader type (and would actually agree with that sentiment, but Molly didn't know that). Which was beyond the point anyway - the point was getting everyone together.
'How would you get everyone together?' Nonny asked.
'I don't know!' Molly said. 'Why are you asking me? You're the smart one.'
'I don't know... people well. You seem better with that. All I know is that it has to be something that we all would enjoy.'
'Yeah, I get that. But what? We can like whatever we want, but I don't know if there's anything that we would all love to do together. I mean, there are those stories, but I don't think we're gonna have any more than three of us doing one of those.'
Nonny put his book down for a moment. 'That won't be easy. I don't know everyone here that well, but I already know that we're very different people. For example, Gil might really enjoy something that Goby may find to be a bit much, and I can't think of anything that Deema would like to do that I would like too.'
He returned to his reading, and Molly couldn't fault him for that at all. She tapped her finger against the hardcover of her book as she thought about how she could possibly unite her new friends for something that didn't involve someone getting hurt.
She paused her finger tapping for a moment. Though she was doing it subconsciously, she noticed something a little odd. It wasn't some random rhythmless ditty just to help her concentrate, but it had a distinct pattern. Upon realising this, she repeated the pattern on purpose. Tap-tap-taptap, tap-tap-taptap. A simple tune to be sure, but an oddly catchy one. Tap-tap-taptap, tap-tap-taptap.
'What tune is that?' Nonny asked.
Molly shrugged. 'I... don't know. It just kinda came to mind.'
Nonny repeated the pattern himself, tapping his nails against his own book. For a moment, the simplistic tune got a smile out of him.
'Hm-hm-hmhm...' Molly hummed. 'Hm-hm-hmhm!'
'I like it.' Nonny said. 'But I think it needs lyrics.'
'Yeah, I'm not so good at lyrics. I just need something to inspire me...'
She put the book down, and glanced out the window. What out there in the beautiful world could help her write lyrics to this simple little song? Nonny followed her actions, placing his book down on the floor gently, and joined her by the window. The outside world may not have been as interesting to him as dinosaurs, but he still loved looking out at the lovely landscape.
He chuckled. It was a short little laugh, one barely audible, but for the first 'Nonny laugh' that Molly had ever heard she found it adorable.
Molly giggled. 'What are you laughing about?'
'I like bubbles.'
He pointed to one of the many little streams of bubbles floating out of the ground. They rose up all the way into the sky, before they either vanished from sight or popped.
'Oh!' Molly said. 'I like bubbles too. Who doesn't?'
She smiled. That was it. Clearing her throat, she began to sing.
'Bub-bub-bubble... bub-bub-bubble...'
Nonny gasped. 'Molly?'
'Bub-bub-bubble... bub-bub-bubble...'
She paused. Almost perfect, but not quite there. It seemed to lack variety. Just one word simply wasn't enough for this nice little tune. With a quick glance at her tail, she knew what the second word needed to be.
'Bub-bub-bubble... gup-gup-guppies!'
Everyone else in the classroom, including Mr Grouper, stopped whatever they were doing and turned to Molly. She noticed all the eyes looking at her, and she took it with stride. Stretching her arms out, she waltzed into the middle of the room with the grace and majesty of a princess, or a ballerina. Everyone watched her like she was a princess too. The only sound that you could hear other than her singing was a block dropping out of Gil's hand and onto the floor.
'Bub-bub-bubble gup-gup-guppies!'
Everyone's jaws were on the floor, almost literally in Deema's case. One smile appeared in the crowd - Gil's. Unable to contain his excitement, he dashed towards the middle of the room and stood next to Molly like he was her co-star. He just had to join in!
'Bubble-bubble-bubble guppy-guppy-guppies!' He sang, catching the tune like he had known it his whole life.
Molly gasped. 'Gilly? You wanna-?'
'Of course!' Gil said. 'With a catchy tune like that, I couldn't not sing along! Wanna sing together?'
'Oh, I would love that.'
Without any idea how their vocals would sound together, they went ahead and sang at once anyway.
'Bub-bub-bubble gup-gup-guppies! Bubble-bubble-bubble guppy-guppy-guppies!'
The result? Amazing. Their vocals collided together like peanut butter and jelly, sounding better than they ever had before. But that simply wasn't enough for Gil. This was just too good to stop now. He opened up his mouth to continue the song, alongside his co-star or otherwise. Only to be interrupted by Deema.
'BUBBLE!'
She threw her arms into the air and dashed out of her seat as she blurted out that word without any second thoughts. Luckily for her, the momentum didn't slow down for a moment, as Goby was quick to swoop in right after her.
'Bubble!' He sang, joined the other three in the middle of the room.
Oona dropped her crayon, and knew immediately that she just had to join in on this. She swam to a spot right next to Deema, absolutely brimming with joyful energy.
'GUPPY!'
Then, they all looked to Nonny. He flinched as five pairs of eyes - six if he counted Mr Grouper's - stared at him, waiting for him to jump in like the rest of them.
'Come on, Nonny!' Molly said. 'All you gotta do is say 'guppy'!'
Nonny stared at them for a few more seconds, before he covered up his face with his book. Though he couldn't see them, he could hear a couple pairs of arms falling back in disappointment to sides quick enough to make a soft smacking sound.
'Hey, we can make this work!' Molly said. 'Deema, that's your cue!'
'Uh...' Deema murmured, staring at the redheaded boy. 'I want Goby to go before me, actually.'
'Oh. Okay! Goby, that's your cue.'
'Bubble!'
Cue the silence. Deema did not follow up with her 'BUBBLE' line immediately, or at all. She was a little too busy looking at Nonny to realise that she missed her own cue, with an unexpectedly solemn look.
'Uh, Deema?' Oona said, approaching her. 'What are you doing?'
'This isn't right.' Deema said. 'After all he's done for me, I can't just leave him in the dust. Hang on.'
As she swam over to the quiet boy, she was met with many requests to leave him alone. But she couldn't leave him alone just yet. She had to know if he truly wouldn't join. She had to hear that adorable voice singing. As much as he wanted to ignore her, Nonny found himself unable to read his book with her staring him down right behind it. So, against his better judgement, he lowered his book and looked her in the eyes.
'Hello.' He greeted.
'Hey dude!' Deema said, waving. 'You wanna join in on the song?'
He shook his head. 'No thanks. I don't like singing.'
'Well, have ya ever tried it? Whenever my dad tries to get me to try broccoli, he says that I'll never know until I try. Now, I already know that I don't like broccoli, but that's beyond the point.'
Nonny glanced down back at his book, but he wasn't really reading it. As strange as it seemed, he saw her point. He couldn't recall a moment when he actually did do something like that.
'I... I don't know.' He murmured. 'I'm not an actor like you. Or a singer like Molly. Or a good storyteller like-'
'So?' Deema asked. 'Just give it a try! If ya don't like it, then you don't like it, and that's okay. But you won't know until you give it a chance!'
'Deema, he's fine.' Molly said. 'We can just continue the song without him.'
'But we can't just exclude him like this!' Deema insisted. 'Com'on. We gotta give him the chance first.'
Oona smiled. 'Yeah! Come on Nonny. I know you can do it!'
Nonny tapped his fingers against his book to distract him from the wild butterflies in his stomach. Everyone else was such a good singer, and he didn't think that he could hope to match them. Deema's enthusiastic smile was certainly pulling him in, but it was Oona who really grabbed hold. She seemed so excited to hear his voice, and for reasons he couldn't explain, he did not want to let her down. But... could he really do it?
'Come on, Nonners.' Deema said. 'I just know you'll be good.'
His eyes widened for a moment. 'Nonners?'
'Yeah! It's a nickname I just came up with. Like, right then. You just seem like a 'Nonners' to me, ya know?'
Nonny didn't understand what was going on. Just five minutes ago, he would've taken his book and swam away to a much quieter corner, one as far away from this blonde Guppy as possible. Yet, despite this being that same Guppy, he felt like he was looking at someone different. Breathing in deeply through his nose, he closed his book and put it aside.
'Okay.' He said. 'I'll join in.'
'YAY!' Oona declared, throwing her arms in the air.
'You will?!' Deema exclaimed. 'HHHIT IT!
The raspy emphasis she put on 'hit' made him flinch, but he didn't change his mind. The others were taken by surprise by both his choice and Deema's jazzy voice, but Molly shrugged.
'That's your cue again, Goby!' She said.
And thus, the song continued. First, Goby sang his line...
'Bubble!'
Followed by Deema singing hers a little overenthusiastically...
'BUB-BLE!'
After which, Oona yelled out her line like she had just been reunited with a long lost friend.
'GUPPY!'
And the moment after Oona said her line, everyone turned to Nonny. He didn't miss a beat.
'Guppy!'
His voice rose in pitch, ever so slightly, filled with more energy that he had ever spoken with before. Completely spur of the moment, he added a little double-clap after his line. Despite being completely ad-libbed, it fit the song wonderfully.
'BUBBLE GUPPIES!' Deema and Oona shouted together in almost perfect harmony, and they both seemed a little shocked by their synchronisation.
Molly gasped. 'Oh my gosh... I think we've got it! We gotta do that again... all together! And I think Nonny's got the right idea with that little clap of his.'
Nonny couldn't believe it. Just like that, he had not only joined in but even added a little extra bit to the song, an extra bit that even Molly thought was a great addition. He was feeling something he had never felt before, but just because it was unknown didn't mean that he didn't like it. In fact, he loved this strange new feeling.
'Ya did it, Nonners!' Deema said. 'You have to join in with the rest of us now!'
When everyone looked at him again, it dawned on him that the only thing stopping round two from starting was himself. He just nodded with a small smile on his face, and that seemed to be enough for them.
'Okay everyone!' Molly said. 'We're gonna start from the beginning, but this time I want us all to join. That includes you, Nonny! Alright, we start singing in three, two, one!'
The question on everyone's mind was this: would they still sound good when singing as a group? Would it be like peanut butter and jelly, or ice cream and gravy? Regardless of any concerns going on in their heads, they all joined in on the catchy tune without a care in the world. And thank the cods they did.
'Bub-bub-bubble! Gup-gup-guppies! Bubble-bubble-bubble guppies-guppies-guppies!'
If any outsider had heard them sing at that moment, they would not believe that it was the first time they had ever sang together. Of course, it wasn't perfect - Nonny's delivery was a bit flat, and Oona went a little too fast, just to name a couple problems - but it was still leagues above what most new bands could accomplish. And, just like before, some of them yelled out a solo in the same order. First Goby, showing the others how it was done with his enthusiasm.
'Bubble!'
Then Deema, emphasising both syllables like they were seperate words.
'BUB-BLE!'
Followed by Oona, bringing her cheerful charm to the table.
'GUPPY!'
And, of course, Nonny, proving that even the quietest voice could make quite the impact.
'Guppy!'
Molly and Gil must've thought that Nonny's little clap was a simply amazing contribution, because they did it for him this time. It served as a nice little cue that everyone in that room had to come together for the final moment.
'BUBBLE GUPPIES!'
Everyone burst into laughing and cheering, and quite loudly in Deema's case. Even Nonny, who didn't make a sound since saying his line, had a little smile on his face.
'WOO-HOO!' Deema cheered. 'Aw, that was a-MAAAAA-zing!'
'Singing is so much more fun when we do it together!' Oona said.
'Looks like we found something in common.' Goby remarked. 'Singing!
Mr Grouper arrived into the room with his mouth all the way open. All the Little Fish surrounded him, making the same face. Now, he had seen many students do some truly amazing things. Doing those amazing things as a group, however, was something else entirely.
'Whoa-ho-ho!' He cried. 'That was amazing, guys!'
Molly scratched the back of her neck, laughing nervously. 'Y-You mean that?'
'Do I mean it? Are you sure you've never met each other before? Because you sang that together like you've been in a band for years!'
The Guppies gasped, reduced to stunned staring. They looked at each other, every one of them thinking the exact same thing. Could we really be a band together? Before anyone could come to a conclusion, Deema suddenly and overdramatically gasped.
'That's it!' She yelled. 'We could be a band together! Can you guys imagine it? We could write our own songs, make some killer music videos, even hold some concerts!'
Molly frowned. 'Wait, what's a concert?'
'It would be AWESOME!' Deema continued, leaving Molly's question unanswered. 'What do you guys think?'
To the pink-haired Guppy's surprise, all the other Guppies looked to her. Apparently, being the one who started this whole 'band' thing cemented it in their minds that, despite Deema being the oldest, Molly was the leader. With this new role bestowed upon her, she gave them all a big warm friendly smile.
'Yeah!' She said. 'I'll be the lead singer, I guess. I'm not the best at writing songs, though. I-I can do a little, but I might need help. Like... oh la la, it's a beautiful day. Spring is here. Hey hey hey... Anyone else got something?'
Goby raised up his hand. 'Wait, I got something! Winter's over, put your jacket away. The sun is shining, why don't ya come at and play.'
'Yeah, something like that!' Oona cried. 'Maybe you could be the other lead, Goby!'
The boy's dark skin did a good job hiding his blush. 'Uh, I-I don't think I want that much attention. I'll be just fine helping you guys write. I won't be able to write everything by myself, you know.'
Molly giggled. 'Well, in that case... I think Gil should lead with me!'
Unfortunately for Gil, his skin was much paler than Goby's, so his blush was front and centre. Molly found it simply adorable.
'W-Wait, m-me?' He said. 'I-I mean, I would love to do it! But are we sure no one else wants to do it instead?'
Deema's hand shot all the way up and waved around in the air, which caught everyone's attention quickly. As soon as all those eyes landed on her, however, she stopped moving for a second. She glanced back at Gil, and simply shrugged.
'Eh, I think Gil would do a better job than me.' She said. 'I'm alright with just being back-up. Just as long as I get to flaunt my beeea-U-tiful golden curls to the fans.'
She punctuated her joke with a little giggle, one that caught on throughout the rest of the class. Even Nonny had a little chuckle, even if he didn't really get the joke.
'We can all be back-ups!' Oona declared. 'I don't know if I could handle being the lead, but I still wanna join in!'
Goby nodded. 'That would be awesome! I wouldn't mind getting a solo sometimes, but I think I'd prefer singing alongside everyone else. What about you, Nonny?'
Everyone turned to him. The ginger boy scratched the back of his head, thinking what was best to answer this rather difficult question with. Before this day, it would've been a hard 'no', no doubt about it. Yet, he could still feel the joy and thrill from singing along with the others. It was such a glorious feeling, and he wanted to feel it again. So, he took in a deep breath, and gave an answer he never expected he would give.
'I would like that.' He said. 'I don't like attention that much, so I'll just be in the background, but it was so much fun that...' He smiled. 'I have to join.'
'Yay!' Oona yelled.
The pig-tailed Guppy forgot all about personal space for a moment, and rushed into an embrace with Nonny. Not even the hugs from his parents felt as warm as hers, and he silently soaked it up for all it was worth.
'You're so cute when you smile!' She declared.
Seeing as Nonny didn't like attention, it's no surprise that such a loud and sweet compliment got him to blush hard enough to match his red hair. How ironic, it seemed, that the Guppy who disliked attention the most would go on to be the most popular. Perhaps if he knew that, he might have said no, but the joy he felt when singing along with his new friends would be too good to pass up regardless.
'What are we gonna call ourselves?' Gil asked. 'Every good band needs a good name!'
The attention fell back onto Molly, but luckily she already had an answer ready.
'I have a great name!' She said. 'How about... the Bubble Guppies? It's the name of our first song, and I think it suits us really well. What do you guys think?'
Gil grinned. 'That's a fantastic name!' He said, bashing his fist into his palm.
'Don't ya mean a... fin-tastic name?' Deema said with a giggle.
Her little pun got laughs out of everyone, including Nonny.
'I bet we could write songs about everything!' Oona said. 'Like colours, or dinosaurs, or cowgirls, or bugs, or cats, or dogs, or elephants! And princesses, and clothes, and gemstones, and emotions, and-'
'One at a time, Oona!' Molly said, waving her hands about. 'I'm sure we'll get to all those songs sooner or later.'
'Well, what are you guys waiting for?' Mr Grouper asked. 'We still have a couple hours of the day left. Let's get started now!'
And thus was the creation of the most popular preschool band under the sea. That might sound like a narrow category, but just remember how giant the ocean is. The young kids may not have realised just what would become of their music career, but at that moment they didn't care. They weren't in it for the fame, or the glory. They were only in it for the fun of singing with their new best friends.
Molly couldn't believe that, as she was swimming home with her new friend Gil by her side, that she wanted to go back to school more than anything else in the world. Gil wanted to go back just to hang out with her more. Goby could not wait to see where his creative endeavours would take him, and he just had to go back the next day. Oona and Deema's excitement for school had only increased, something they didn't think could even happen. And as for Nonny... just thinking about meeting his new friends again made him smile.
Author Notes - In the episode 'We Totally Rock', Molly had to ask Deema (of all Guppies) what a concert was. That's gotta be embarrassing. Considering that she's a big fan of a pop star, that makes it extra embarrassing. I'd understand if it was Nonny who asked, as he did have to ask what a popstar was in 'Guppy Style', but MOLLY?
I find it a little humorous that a looot of fanfics have Deema call Nonny by the nickname 'Nonners' quite often, when she only called him that twice. Once in 'The Crayon Prix', and once again in 'We Totally Rock'. Granted, she rarely refers to the others by name past Season One anyway, usually saying things like 'Hello friendly customer!'. It's a little odd, really. I'm no less guilty of this, because I think that nickname is adorable and she needs to call him that more.
By the way, this isn't where I plan to end the story. While it would be fine to stop it here, I kind of want to have an 'epilogue' of sorts. Focusing on what, you may ask? Why, Zooli's first day of school of course!
