Of all the places she wanted to go, it had to be this? He looked at his feet and let out a sigh. Why are these death traps even legal? He looked at Luz and he shook his head. She was just like her mother, amazing at roller skating. She was skating backwards as if she had eyes in the back of her head. She talked about how she always wanted to go to Myrtle Beach, apparently Camila had told Luz all about how she met the love of her life there, so seeing as they were less than an hour drive away, it was pretty easy. He smiled when he heard that, it was nice to know that after all these years, Camila still loved him. Technically, they were never divorced, she just left one day and took Luz with her. He wishes he knew why she left.
"Dad, come one!" Luz said.
He bought out the entire place, and he most likely will be buying out every place they go on the boardwalk, specifically so the only person he'll make a fool of himself in front of would be his daughter.
"Coming, Princess!"
He got up and had to hold on to the wall in order to avoid falling. Luz came skating up and smiled.
"Are you okay?" She asked.
"Well, in your mother's words, me in roller skates, is the equivalent to a newborn giraffe on ice."
"Fun fact, did you know that giraffes are banished demons from the Boiling Isles?"
"Of course, they are." He said, "Luz, don't laugh at this, but... I'm afraid of giraffes."
Luz had to stifle her laugh and grabbed his hand.
"Come on!"
Later, they walked out, Luz's father had an ice pack pressed against his head.
"You are definitely Camila's child." He said, "And just like her, I'm bending over backwards in order to give you the best experience ever."
Luz looked away for a second and he quickly realized his mistake.
"I... I'm sorry, Princess. I know you're still grieving; I shouldn't have brought up your mother."
Luz grabbed his hand.
"It's fine. I need to learn how to get over it."
Her father kneeled down and put his hands on her shoulders.
"No, you don't need to get over it. Death is something you can never get over. Getting over it, means that you've forgotten her. You need to learn how to process this." He said, "And you don't need to do this alone. I'm here for you, every step of the way."
"You sound like you know what you're talking about." Luz said.
"I do. Long before you were born, before your mother and I were married, we were only in our second year of dating when it happened."
"When what happened?" Luz asked.
"I had to kill my brother." He said, "He was borderline insane. He tried to kill me and your mother. Not a day goes by that I don't regret what I did, but I had no choice."
"Oh, I'm sorry." Luz said.
"Don't be, I've processed these feeling long ago. Your mother help me get out of it as well. She was my rock; I will never forget her. Another reason I was able to move passed it." He tapped Luz's nose, "You were born. If I didn't kill him, you may never have come."
Luz looked at him and hugged him. He gratefully returned the hug and she whispered in his ear.
"I love you, daddy."
"I love you too, Princess." He said, looking at the sky, "It's only ten AM. What do you want to do next?"
Luz smiled. She had a lot of fun stuff she wanted to do with her dad.
