Lily Evans was doing her prefect duties, when an argument caught her attention. Being curious, she sneaked over to get a better listen.

"I can't believe you!" James Potter yelled as he slapped his best friend, Sirius Black.

Lily's mouth dropped, James, slapping Sirius?

"Ow!" Sirius loudly said as he cupped his reddened cheek.

"You could've gotten Snape killed!" James bitterly yelled.

Lily gasped, her former friend, killed? Although their friendship was shaky, and she would end it later that year, she still had somewhat of a softspot for him that was unlikely to ever go away completely. She also knew James and Sirius hated Sev, but getting him killed?

"So? Ow!"

"So? Just because I hate Snivelly's guts, that doesn't mean I want him dead!" James calmed down a little before adding, "At least not by," James then mimed something that Lily couldn't quite see, but she was curious as to what it was.

Sirius rolled his eyes. "Ok, I get it! Sheesh."

"No, I don't think you do!" James angrily retorted, "You know how fragile Moony's self-esteem is. If he woke up and found a dead body, no matter who's corpse it is, with signs of," James whispered the next part so no one else could hear, "werewolf damage," he then raised his voice back to normal, "he'll go off the deep-end!" Sirius was about to speak, but James cut him off, "And that's just one scenario! Imagine if Snape got infected, Moony could hardly live with himself! And I doubt Snape will forgive him, or you! And that's if Snape doesn't kill him!"

"So I might've exposed Moony's secret." Sirius carefully replied, finally grasping what James was saying.

"Might've?" James yelled, "He fucking saw him! If I wasn't there, who knows how bad things could've gotten!"

"He's sworn to secrecy, right?" Sirius asked.

"Yes, but he wouldn't have had to if you thought things through!" James yelled, "You know Snape's a huge creep, there's no way he would've been sneaking through the Whomping Willow's tunnel without your 'tidbit'. Because of you, I had to save Snivelly's life and humanity, which none of us are happy about."

Sirius sighed. He wasn't liking this one bit.

"When will you grow up?" James asked, "You're the boyfriend, yet I seem to care more about Moony than you!"

"That's not true!" Sirius defended.

"Oh yeah? Then why did you risk his secret getting out?"

Sirius tried to think of an answer, but couldn't.

James sighed and continued his glare. "You're lucky Remus doesn't know it was you who tipped him off. And for the sake of his self-esteem I won't tell him. But you need to be more thoughtful next time. If you care about him, show it! Or else you're just a prideful prick like your parents."

This stung really Sirius. Ever since he arrived at Hogwarts, he did his best to separate himself from his family's way of life. But, never did he think he could end up like them without thinking.

James nodded. "You're sleeping by yourself tonight." Then he stormed off.

"What? Prongs!" Sirius ran after his friend, trying to persuade him out of his decision to no avail.

As the two left for their dorm room, Lily stood and contemplated, absorbing what she had just witnessed. James Potter, just saved the life his worst enemy and favorite target? And Remus, he, he, was Sev right about him being a werewolf? That would certainly explain his disappearances, and the things James and Sirius were talking about.

Lily had always thought of James Potter as a spoiled, arrogant brat, but, given how he had just behaved in defense of his friend, and how protective he got over him, maybe, maybe James wasn't as bad as she thought. Maybe, he was worth a second chance? Of course he had to stop his bullying first.
