CHAPTER 5 "Implement"
Lily's disappointment was overwhelming. Nothing had gone right since she had started school. She had been so excited and anxious to come to Hogwarts but nothing had been how she'd expected. Only a month in and she was already frustrated, she had lost her sister's respect, she'd fallen in the lake, been attacked and even Severus wasn't the same. She had written to her parents and they seemed fine but it drove Lily crazy to lie and tell them everything was perfect. They didn't mention Petunia so she knew she was still mad.
I'll just have to get through it. Lily thought as she combed her crazy red curls. She had tried to braid it and failed so she ended up tying it in a ponytail. They had flying lessons today and she needed to get her hair under control.
"You should read this book, Lily. It will teach you loads of stuff," Meredith showed her a book titled 'Witches Beauty Management' by Regina Wallace. "That ponytail is really sad, here let me help," she said and divided her hair and made two french-braids. "There, much better. Nice and cute," she smiled.
"Thanks, Mer," Lily said, she really liked how it looked.
"Do me next!" Mary said enthusiastically. Meredith went to Mary's bed and made a simple braid on her.
Lily reached for the book and started looking through it. There were some chapters about beauty potions and curling spells. "Where did you get this?"
"Saw it at the bookstore when I went for my school books. Mom wasn't too happy but I'm very good at convincing," she winked. "Come here Phylli, it's your turn."
"No way," she said straight forward.
"Are you really going to fly with your curls running wild?"
"I won't fly if I can help it."
"I doubt that. Come here," she said and used her fingers instead of a comb on Phyllida's afro-like hair.
The four of them walked all nice and combed to the Quidditch pitch. Phyllida looked really nice in her tight braids and Meredith had decided to use her hair in two buns. Lily was really eager for their flying lessons, it was something that really fascinated her. Phyllida, on the other hand, didn't want to touch a broom. She preferred to have her feet safe on the ground.
When they arrived, the Gryffindor boys were already there. They were talking enthusiastically and became quiet as the girls came close.
"Hey there Ladies!" Sirius greeted "Ready to get blown off your feet?" he said and the boys laughed.
"Yes, actually!" Lily answered, she was so excited nothing would bring her down.
"It's so nice out today," Mary said. "Perfect!"
"Does anyone know a way I can skip this class?" Phyllida asked gloomily.
"Miss Curio," James said in a matter-of-fact kind of way, "Flying is a necessity, one way or another you'll need it. Mark my words," he said the last bit with pauses so it would sink in properly. Phyllida rolled her eyes.
"Really?" Lily asked, "What do wizards use flying for?"
"Well, my dear Evans," his eyes sparkled, "Flying is basically the most important means of transportation. Not to mention Quidditch," he stuck his chest out proudly.
"Quidditch?" Lily asked. James had a look of shock at her question.
"How can you not know about Quidditch?" his voice was a little higher than normal. He dived into explaining the wizard's sport, he was clearly very passionate about it. He only stopped when he was interrupted by the arrival of Madam Hooch, the flying instructor, followed by Ravenclaw's first years.
"Welcome," Madam Hooch greeted, "There will be no fooling around in this class. We don't need accidents or any of the sort," she flicked her wand and a big trunk flew up to her "Each will get a broom, spread around," she said and opened the trunk.
Lily grabbed a broom and looked at it, it seemed to be a common sweeping broom that had been used a little too much.
"Lay the broom on the ground next to you. Today we will learn how to mount," Madam Hooch indicated, "Stretch a hand over your broom and say 'UP'."
Lily placed herself between James and Apraxia, who had moved next to them. She reached over her flying broom and said as she was told. Immediately the broom flew up to her hand, at the same time James's did. They looked at each other smiling. The blond girl looked at them and frowned as she looked at her broom that was still on the ground. Class went on smoothly without any accidents. They had learned to glide around a bit and James gave Lily a couple of tips that were really useful.
"You need to find a way to sit that is comfortable and steady, if you're unstable, your flying will shake," he had said. Lily found he was right and was able to fly without the broom wiggling. Phyllida avoided flying and only pretended to try. On the other hand, Meredith and Mary only tried a couple of times before they were able to fly.
When class was dismissed Lily felt sweaty and dirty but happy, she had decided she loved flying. The girls all walked together back to the castle. Lily was remembering the wind on her skin and hair when she felt someone shove past her.
"What's your problem?" Lily asked.
"What?" Apraxia forced a completely flabbergasted expression "Oh, sorry! Didn't see you there," she faked a cute giggle. She flicked her straight silky blond hair and kept on her way.
"Competitive Ravenclaw," Mary said as she rolled her eyes.
"She's so obnoxious. She walks around like a queen, but she's the queen of the snobs," Meredith criticized "And she's ugly!"
"Ok Mer, let's not get carried away," Phyllida said.
The next day was Sunday, the boys were ready, everything was in place. Remus and Peter were the lookouts, Sirius and James were in charge of the charms. It was late and everyone was in bed.
"Before we leave" James interrupted "I have one more thing that will help us," he reached for his pocket and took a soft cloth, "This is one of my deepest secrets, a gift from my dad."
"A cloak?" Sirius sniggered.
"Yes, but not just a cloak," James said "This is an invisibility cloak that has been in my family for ages."
"An invisibility cloak!" Peter said, completely bewildered.
"Yes, Pete I think that's what he said, "Sirius said "Cool, mate! Let me see."
"This will help us a lot," Remus said, also checking out the cloak.
"Let's go then," James hurried. The four boys walked out of the common room and through the fat lady's painting.
"Where do you think you're going at this time of night?" the Fat Lady said in a deep and sleepy voice, "It's way past your curfew."
"We know. We know!" Sirius turned around and looked at the painting. "But… A young beautiful young lady like yourself can keep a secret, can you?" he said in a dashing and unsirius kind of way. To James's surprise, the Fat Lady blushed and giggled.
"Well… If you ask nicely…" She said and winked.
"Miss, would you please keep our prowling secret?" he said, emphasizing his charming voice. The lady gave her biggest giggle yet.
"Yes young man, I will," she answered. Sirius gave her his last wink and the four boys turned around and continued their mission.
"I didn't know you had a gift with the ladies, Sirius!" James mocked.
"You have no idea how useful it is," Sirius said proudly "The old spinsters witches are the easiest. My mother always has her friends over so I have a lot of practice."
The three boys laughed at the idea of Sirius charming a bunch of older women. After a few steps they became quiet, the anticipation built up as they walked closer to their goal.
"This is where you'll stakeout," James said to Remus, "Peter you go over that way."
"You know what to do," Sirius said "Come on James,"
"Get under this," James lifted the invisibility cloak and they both disappeared under it.
The boys walked deeper into the dungeons. They had already stalked a Slytherin and found the entrance to their common room. As they arrived at the damp stone wall, James pulled the cloak off and looked at the wall.
"I prefer the fat lady any day," he said.
"I don't know, I think it's a little useful not having a witness to our nocturnal activities," Sirius brushed back his hair with both his hands.
"Yeah, maybe you're right," they suddenly saw a small white light dash through the hall floor, the warning they had arranged with Peter and Remus, "Hurry, get under the cloak," James whispered fast and threw the cloak over them. Just as they had disappeared they heard voices walking close towards them. The boys slowly moved from the wall and placed themselves behind a statue of a wizard.
"He's recruiting," It was the Slytherin Head Boy "I'll be joining once I leave this shithole."
"I don't know why you bother staying, Yaxley," said the 5th year prefect.
"Because he wants us here, Malfoy! You wouldn't understand," he said arrogantly.
"My father lets me know more than you would think," Malfoy said calmly as if not offended at all.
"Yeah, sure he does," they both stopped at the damp wall "You need to control those idiots."
"I'm on top of the situation. Mulciber and Avery are complete morons, but their affiliations are in the right place," Malfoy said "They were taken care of, weren't they?"
"Yes, but not by you," Yaxley said, "They need to follow the rules. They can't do everything that goes through their little thick heads. Not with Dumbledore here," they both paused in understanding.
"And keep an eye on that one," Yaxley said.
"The Snape boy? Yes, I already am,"
"For a first-year, he's pretty talented ," Yaxley said as if not impressed.
"But he has that disgusting thing for the mudblood."
"It must be a phase, he is too young," Yaxley said calmly, "He can have her and do whatever he likes with her, it's not important. Anyway, keep an eye on him."
"I said yes!" Malfoy said, a little annoyed "Salazar" the stone door opened. And both Slytherins walked in.
James and Siriys exchanged a look, they knew they shouldn't talk. They left the shelter of the statue without taking the cloak off and continued with their plan.
