Writer's Notes: Thank you Roxhall for your review! Izzy is a character, that's for sure. Bella is experiencing so much at once, and that can get overwhelming. As for Valentine injecting Jocelyn, it's assumed it was demon blood, but it could have been angel blood as well. Maryse and Jocelyn didn't have a clue what was happening regardless. More to come on Maryse later. There are some introductions to some other characters, so hold tight. What will Bella do with more than one hot shadowhunter after her heart? Hopefully we find out soon ; ) As always, I appreciate all the support. Don't forget to follow, favorite, and review! See you at the next chapter!
"Bella, I'm going to show you something." Luke's voice was always so gentle with Bella. Bella looked up to Luke. She watched Luke carefully as he showed her the spot in her mother's closet. She was thirteen now, and Luke had been showing her how to do some light training. Her mother didn't like the idea, but it was fun.
"What is this stuff?" Bella asked, looking over the seraph blades.
"If you're ever in danger, come to this closet. These are here to protect you. Don't tell your mother I showed you." Luke said, his dark hazel eyes studied her.
Bella nodded, and looked up at him. "Why would I ever be in danger?"
"There's a lot in the world Bella, that is dangerous. I just want you to be safe." Luke murmured.
Bella respected that. "Thank you." She said and hugged him. Luke's arm closed around her, hugging her back. "I know you're not my dad…but…you feel like my dad."
Luke's eyes teared up, and he rubbed her back. "I know kiddo. I know. Just know that whatever happens, I'm always here for you. I will always protect you, no matter what."
Bella woke, looking around. Her dreams were plagued with memories now. Luke had showed her the seraph blades before in her mom's closet. Maybe that was why she was so quick to find those. Maybe it all wasn't just a crazy coincidence. She looked over at the clock. She had been asleep for a few hours. It was five in the morning now. She sighed and got out of bed. She was still naked, but she didn't think too much about it and got dressed, wearing the tight spandex shorts, and sports bra she got from shopping. She would train a little, she needed to be stronger, faster, so that way Alec wouldn't worry about her too much.
She went to the training room. Everything was quiet, which meant everyone was in bed or at least in their own rooms. She was remembering some of the light training that Luke had taught her. She put her Bluetooth earbuds in, and turned music on her phone, and started some stretches and exercises. She completely zoned out, letting the music just drive her as she continued through a series of punches and kicks at the bag hanging in the training room. She at least remembered to tape her wrists, which was one of the things Luke showed her. Her hair was pulled up in a high ponytail as she just hammered away at training.
She didn't hear anyone come in the room because of the earbuds, so Jace startled her, and she went into a defensive position, striking out at him, and he caught her wrist. She blinked a few times. "Oh," she murmured, and he released her wrist, and she took her earbuds out.
"That explains it. I called your name. You just didn't hear me." Jace said with a smirk. "Couldn't sleep?"
"I woke up and didn't want to go back to sleep." She explained, and pocketed her earbuds. "Why are you awake?"
"Couldn't sleep." Jace said. "You have a pretty decent form." He said, and walked around her. "Defensive stance." He said and Bella moved into a stance. Jace paused, fixing her feet. "There. Want to spare me?"
"You're faster than me." Bella pointed out.
Jace shrugged. "How are you going to learn?"
Bella knew he was right, so she nodded and Jace took his own stance. She struck first, and he parried, striking at her, and she blocked and then a memory of Luke showing her how to get her opponent on the ground blipped into her head, she stepped and punched, and he avoided it, but she slid her foot inward, weaving through the inside of his own step, and hooked his leg, and she blocked his next hit, but instead of bouncing away, she hooked her arm around his, throwing herself into close quarters with him, and knocked him off balance, his arm trapped in an armbar.
"Impressive." Jace said, and then he shifted, her hold on his arm not as strong as she should have had it, and got her down on her back with his legs, and he rolled, straddling her. "Tighten up on the armbar next time. You want to lock it at the elbow, that way I can't free myself, and maneuver around to knock you off balance."
Bella nodded, and Jace let her up, giving her his hand and helping her to her feet. They proceeded to dance around like this for a while, before Bella finally got Jace on his back, and she straddled him. She smiled, proud of herself.
Jace stared up at her, both were a little out of breath, he leaned up, his mouth covering hers. It was slow at first, but then it became hungrier, as he sat up with her, standing, hooking her legs around his waist.
Bella's brain was misfiring, she was surprised with the kiss, and then they were standing, him holding her. Alec popped into her head, and she pulled away from the kiss, resting her forehead to his. She had to think a moment.
"Are you okay?" Jace murmured.
"Yeah, I uh. Just shocked is all."
"I'm sorry."
"No, don't apologize." She murmured.
Jace loved the feel of her body to his. "I don't want to do anything you don't want me to do."
Bella nodded. She wasn't sure what to do. Alec. She bit her lip, and then leaned in and kissed Jace, he moved with her, carrying her towards the locker room, that you could store gear, and shut the door, pinning her up against it.
Jace moved his mouth from hers, to her throat, kissing her there, suckling, his hands moving up her sides, resting on the bare part of her skin.
Bella moaned slightly, feeling the heat ignite between her legs, and she struggled with the morality of the situation. Alec…made it clear that they couldn't be together, but that didn't mean that she should be with Jace.
Jace's hands moved up brushing sides of her breasts, as he pinned her, and she forced his mouth back to hers, kissing him again, her tongue lashing out against his.
Her hands moved between them, going to his pants, trying to free him. He let her slide down to her feet, as he helped get her shorts off, before hoisting her again, his eyes on hers as he thrust up into her. She gasped at how large he was, and how quickly her insides just wanted to melt with pleasure. He continued to watch her face for any discomfort, but all he saw was the ecstasy and she moaned as he continued to drive up into her. She clung around him as he quickened his pace, pushing her small button, repeatedly until she was spilling over, coating his throbbing cock with her own essence.
He groaned, his mouth covering hers as he pushed himself to his final end, climaxing hard, he thrust inside her, emptying himself. They stayed like that a moment before, he pulled away, letting her down to her feet. They pulled on their pants and shorts in silence.
Bella was just speechless. She felt the satisfaction of the pleasure, but she felt the guilt too.
"You okay? I know…before, you mentioned in the past that you were…"
"Oh, yeah. I'm not anymore." Bella said, and then took her hair down, shaking it out to try and smooth it.
Jace thought about Magnus and her kissing, and it dawned on him that maybe she had been with Magnus before. "I don't think I ever asked…if you were dating anyone, so I'm sorry if…"
"I'm not dating anyone." Bella said, and she pulled her hair back up. "I'm okay Jace. I'm a big girl, I know what I'm doing." But did she?
Jace nodded, and then reached for her, his hands going to her hips. "Well, I enjoyed that very much." He smiled, and leaned in, drawing her in for a slow kiss.
Bella obliged, kissing him back and then stepped back. "I think I'm going to go shower." She said. "Thank you…for helping me." She said and she opened the locker room door, and left Jace there, heading back to her room.
She ran into Jacob. "Oof, I'm sorry." Bella said, when Jake reached out and steadied her.
Jake smiled down at her. He was taller than she was, and was he beautiful. "All good. You're sweaty, so I'm assuming work out?"
"Yeah, I wanted to do some work outs before everyone got up." Bella smiled, not trying to think about Jace.
Jake nodded. "I can respect that. Well, it's nice to meet you. I was a little kid when the house fire happened. I'm really sorry."
Bella shook her head. "It's fine. I had a block in my memory until recently. So, the memory is fresh to me now. I'll be okay though. It's nice meeting you Jake." She said with a smile, and stepped around him and went back to her room. She quickly stripped, getting in the shower, and showering off the training…and Jace. She felt so upset with herself, and she hated that she was feeling this way. It didn't matter if she slept with Jace, or she wanted to tell herself that. She had no real attachments to the people here, she lied to herself. The water ran cold, she was in there so long, so she stepped out, drying off and dressing quickly. She dried her hair with the hair dryer. She hated having wet hair. She left her room by seven, and went back to command. Jace was standing in command next to Alec.
Alec looked up when she appeared. "Sleep well?"
"Yeah." She lied, and came to stand by them, looking at the screen. "Everything look quiet?"
Alec nodded. "So, far. We're going to do some patrols later. Hit Pandemonium again."
A portal opened in the command center, and Magnus walked through. He was carrying coffee, he walked over to Bella and handed it to her. "Good morning Shadowhunters."
Bella raised a brow. "You brought me coffee." She narrowed her eyes. "What do you want?"
Magnus smiled. "Do I need something to visit my favorite little lady?"
"No, I suppose not." Bella smiled. She felt so comfortable with Magnus. She did know him all her life pretty much, so there was that connection, and all her memories of Magnus. Her mother didn't just bring her once a year, she spent some time Magnus from time to time. Including Magnus coming and watch both her and Clary when they were fifteen, and ten, while Jocelyn had to travel for an art thing.
Magnus slipped his arm around her shoulders, and leaned into her and sighed. "Although…"
"I knew it." Bella said with a smile.
"You are a fantastic painter."
"I am." Bella said with a nod. "Do you want me to paint you Magnus?"
"Perhaps, one day when we're not trying to save the world." He said with a wink, and leaned in, kissing her full on the mouth again.
Bella smiled, and leaned her head against his shoulder. "Saving the world eh?"
Alec watched Magnus, how he was with Bella and how she was with him. It was unsettling to him in his gut, but he didn't say anything. "Magnus, do you know the club owner for Pandemonium?"
"Of course."
"They are?"
"Myself. I own a lot of the buildings around the area. Pandemonium is being managed by a comrade of mine. Old friend." Magnus said with a smile. "Why?"
"We're going to patrol there. Demons frequent that spot."
Magnus nodded. "Eidolon demons. They pass for humanoid. They frequent a lot of my events. I can usually dispatch them quietly, if not otherwise indisposed."
Bella zoned out all of a sudden and this drew everyone's attention, even Magnus.
"Bella, I don't believe you're ready…" Jocelyn said.
"Mom, why am I seeing these things?" Bella asked, holding up the paper with the Shadowhunter symbol. "Why did a demon try to kill me? If Magnus…hadn't been there." Bella was seventeen. She was old enough to know what the hell was happening.
Jocelyn shut her eyes. "I don't want you apart of this world Bella."
"You don't get to decide that! I'm not some kid."
"You're my kid!" Jocelyn yelled back at Bella. "It's too dangerous for you to be apart of that world. I thought the block would hold longer."
Bella shook her head. "What block? Mom, why are you doing this to me? To Clary? We deserve the truth."
"You're right, you do, but not now. Clary is still so young. I'm sorry." Jocelyn murmured, and her eyes looked over Bella's shoulder.
Bella turned, looking at Magnus. "Magnus!"
"I'm so sorry biscuit…I don't want to do this…" He murmured, and then he waved his hand.
Bella blinked a few times and she looked around. "What?"
Magnus was standing in front of her. "Have you been having flashes of memories?"
"Yes." Bella said with a nod.
"Interesting. I assumed it unlocked all of them at one time." Magnus murmured.
"They come in little waves. I got dizzy once and fainted." Bella said.
"And how do you feel right now?" Magnus asked.
Bella shrugged. "Fine. I was remembering you, actually. Mom and I got into an argument. I was attacked by a demon, you were there, and you saved me. I was starting to draw the angelic rune again. She didn't want me to be apart of the world. She wanted to keep it hidden. I was seventeen."
Magnus nodded. "I remember that moment well. You and Edward…I believe was his name, had a spat, at that point, I hadn't blocked your memory so much from remembering me. You came to my loft. You were upset, and you wanted to be alone, not around family. You were drawing in your sketchpad like normal, and I recognized the rune. I knew the block was wearing off. I tried to reason with Jocelyn about the clock. You were seventeen, and she was adamant. At that point I felt confident that Valentine was not a threat. It was rumored he was dead, but I had my doubts that was really true." He sighed. "I didn't say anything about you drawing the rune, I just ignored it. You were crying and upset, so I didn't…I didn't want to make things worse. I sat and held you for a while, until you fell asleep. I woke you up when your mother called, and you had to go home. I walked with you since it was dark, to wait for a cab. A demon, ravener, attacked us on that corner, and I didn't have a choice but reveal myself. You were…so terrified, the look in your eye, but you only hugged me, asking me if I was okay. You didn't care that I was a Warlock, or that I was…different. I suppose you were used to the supernatural at this point because Edward was a vampire. Your mother didn't know, which surprised me. I heard you and your mother arguing…and I walked in, and your mother looked at me, she…wanted your memory suppressed. She was the one never ready…I always felt you and Clary were ready." He explained.
"Why did I forget you afterwards…" Bella murmured.
"Oh biscuit…I loved you too much to keep putting you through the whirlwind that is me. I…was also a coward. I couldn't…keep watching the hurt and pain in your eyes." Magnus said, and reached out, stroking her face.
Bella sighed. "I'm sorry."
Magnus smiled. "Always apologizing, even when you shouldn't be." He leaned in, kissing her forehead.
Alec swallowed, Magnus was so gentle with her, so loving, and he could show her something he couldn't. He cleared his throat. "So, were there other moments that Bella encountered demons?"
Magnus thought about it. "Bella? Yes. She's like a beacon for demons actually. That's why the blocks were important when you were just a girl, but there were a couple instances that Luke caught a ravener stalking."
Bella frowned. "Does it have anything to do with Valentine injecting me with angel blood?"
Jace frowned. "He what?"
Alec blinked. "Shit, I forgot to tell you. That's what she remembered last night, and her older brother was helping him."
Jace looked at Alec. "That's something big to just forget to tell me this morning." He frowned. It wasn't like Alec to let things like that slip his mind.
"I just had more on my mind I guess." Alec said with a sigh.
Magnus studied Alec, the way he cut his eyes over at Bella, made it obvious that the love bite on her neck was something more between the two. "Hmm. Well, the angel blood probably does have something to do with that. Considering they are natural enemies, demons, and angels."
Bella looked at Alec. "That might explain how the demon found us so quick when Jace and I went to get Clary."
Alec mulled this over. "Yeah. You may be right."
Clary walked in, smiling at Magnus. "Maggie!"
"Clary," Magnus said, smiling back and hugging her. "How are you feeling my dear?"
"Pretty good." Clary said and looked to Bella. "I was going to do some training this morning if you wanted to exercise with me.
Bella smiled. "I already did some workouts this morning, I'm actually pretty sore from that."
Jace coughed. "So, what do we do about Bella being a beacon?" He said, turning the conversation away from exercising, and training.
Clary and Bella looked at each other and at the same time they spoke. "Veil Rune."
"That's not a rune."
Bella shook her head. "No, it is." She said and took Alec's tablet from him, and drew the rune carefully and put it up on the screen. Everyone looked at it.
"I've never seen this rune before." Jace said, intrigued.
Magnus smiled. "Bella, these memories might come to you eventually, but that was one of the things that Jocelyn was afraid of. Bella and Clary can create runes."
"We can what?" Bella said, not believing what he just said.
"Yes, Jocelyn noticed it when you were fourteen, and Clary when she was fourteen. That seemed to be the magic number then, but you girls were creating actual working runes. Runes that affected other things. Not just a Shadowhunter."
Clary frowned. "That's why we never kept the dog!" She exclaimed.
Magnus nodded. "Exactly."
Bella handed Alec his tablet back, and she drew her stele from her pocket. "Only one way to find out if it works right?"
"Wait." Alec stopped her, staring at her. "I'll do it." He said and took her stele. "Turn around. Lift your shirt." He said and she turned like instructed, and lifted her shirt. He drew the rune over her skin, and she bit her lip, until he finished.
Magnus looked at Bella, before closing his eyes. "Hmm. Seems to be working. I can't sense you." He said, opening his eyes, his green cat eyes appearing before disappearing.
Alec stared at the mark, and moved his hand over the rune, tracing it. "Interesting."
Bella swallowed a little, trying to ignore the feeling she got when Alec touched her bar skin. She let her shirt down and turned. "Okay, so that makes it easier for Clary and I to be outside the Institute, without flashing a bat signal that we're there."
Alec handed Bella her stele. "Yeah, that's true but-"
"Alec, we're not doing this again. I'm not going to stand on the sidelines while you guys go out and risk yourselves to find our mother." Bella looked at him defiantly.
"I can't risk both of you at the same time. Bella, I must make these decisions based on what's best overall for the team, and for this Institute. You have to keep training, getting better at being able to defend yourself."
"I'm not incapable of protecting myself."
"That's not what I said."
"But you keep implying it. How am I going to gain experience out there, if I'm never out there?" Bella looked at him.
Alec shook his head. "You never understand when I tell you these things. We keep arguing the same things."
"Then stop arguing with me!"
"You are infuriating."
"Right back at you."
Alec clenched his jaw. "You can't listen to me, how am I going to trust you to listen to me out there. There are more things at stake Bella. I can't-"
"I know! Jesus you don't think I know that? But you can't just keep me pinned down in this Institute, never gaining the experience I need. I'm a Shadowhunter." She gestured to herself. "What makes me different than all the other Shadowhunters that trained?"
"You're inexperienced, you didn't grow up in-"
"But others had to gain experience too. I have more of my memories back, I know things that Luke taught me in secret. I'm not some helpless-
Alec turned away from her again.
"Alec, don't do that!" She reached out, grabbing his arm.
Alec turned fast, catching her by her wrists, her body close to his. "Bella, I am very close to losing my control in the middle of command right now. I suggest you drop this." His blue eyes stared into hers.
"You can't just turn your back on me everytime you're tired of listening to me.
Jace tried to intervene. "Hey Alec, mate, maybe-"
"It's not that I'm tired of listening to you, and you know that." Alec bit out. "You, are pressing your luck."
"My luck? Is that a threat?" Bella glared back. She moved her wrists, breaking out of his hold, and then she turned, grabbing him, and going into a strange stance that Jace had never seen before, and she swept at Alec's feet, but he danced around her, twisting, putting her into a different hold, but she slipped him, and turned, only for him to parry her, and catch her again from behind, pulling him to him tight.
"Bella," He growled in her ear. "Enough."
Bella glared at him, twisting out of his hold. "I'm not helpless."
"I know." Alec said, his jaw still clenched.
"Then why- "
"Bella." Alec said it sharply again and Jace started to butt in, but he held up a hand. "Office. Now." He commanded, leaving the command center.
Bella glared after him, and walked off after him, leaving Clary, Jace and Magnus looking at each other, shocked at what just happened.
Alec shut the door, locking it, and then he pulled her to him, his mouth covering hers, roughly. His hands went to her pants, while hers went to his and he moved her to his desk, knocking things over, and he drove into her, thrusting hard, jolting her senses, and she started rising to her climax quick, biting her lip so she wouldn't make a noise.
They both met their orgasm quick in the climb, coming together. He waited a moment, before pulling away from her. He pulled his pants back on, and then helped her up off the desk, and he bent, picking her pants up and handing them to her.
"That is what I meant by losing my control." Alec said, his voice still harsh, angrier with himself. He was not this person. He did not get angry like this so easy. He ran his hands through his hair.
Bella pulled her pants on, pulling her hair down, and smoothing it before pulling it back up. "I'm sorry."
"You are so maddening sometimes. I'm not saying you can't go out there. I just must be strategic. You never let me finish, you always jump to conclusions, and never give me a chance to explain. I get that you're not incapable, and you need the experience. I'm trying to give you that, which is why you're going to Pandemonium. That's why I was asking Magnus who the owner was. I needed more exits in that place, and I need to be prepared." Alec said, his voice calming down.
"I…I'm sorry." Bella muttered.
Alec sighed, and then reached out to her, pulling her into his arms and hugging him. "I can't…I can't lose my control ever. Not up there. You can't push me like that. This happens."
"That…wasn't so bad." She murmured against his chest.
"Bella…I can't be in a relationship, not with you, and not now. I must stay focus, and you're breaking all my focus. I have to step back, I have to." Alec leaned back, looking at her. "I don't have a choice."
Bella nodded. "I know, I understand. I'm sorry. I'll…mind my own temper. I won't push you anymore."
Alec nodded, and then he kissed her, just one last time. "Good." He rested his forehead to hers and sighed again. He kissed her forehead, and then went and picked up the items they knocked off his desk, before going to the door. He opened it, motioning for her to go out before him.
Bella walked back into command, Alec behind her.
"Okay, Pandemonium tonight, Magnus I need to know all the exits there. Bella, you stay close to Jace, Clary, stay close to Jake." Alec said, and picked up the tablet.
Jace blinked. "Are we not going to talk about what the fuck just happened?"
"No." Alec said. "Bella, do you understand the plan for tonight?"
Bella nodded. "Yes. Got it." Her voice was calm.
Clary shook her head. "I'm so fucking confused. You two were just about to kill each other."
Alec looked at Bella. "We weren't about to kill each other. She's just irritating sometimes."
Bella nodded. "I like to talk before I speak. I apologized to Alec. I'm okay. Sorry for the display."
Magnus raised a brow. He could tell there was more there between them, but he stayed quiet. "Well Alexander, there are seven exits in total just on the bottom floor. There is a second floor, that is mostly just office space, but there are two exits that lead to fire escapes that go down the side." He explained.
Alec nodded. "Good. Izabell is still recovering, so we can't bring her. Jake is tagging along, and so is Emmett. I'll be here in command."
Jake and Emmett entered the command right about then. "What's happening?" Jake asked, hearing his name when they walked in.
"Pandemonium tonight. Jace is team lead for tonight Em." Alec said.
Emmett nodded. "Sounds good." He fist bumped Jake.
Bella blew out a breath. "Maybe I will do some more workouts."
"Thought you were sore." Clary said.
"Not anymore." Bella muttered, and turned and left command.
Alec rubbed a hand over his face. "She's going to be the death of me…"He muttered, and looked back at the screen.
Clary followed Bella out of command, going to change to do some workouts with her sister.
Jace sighed. "I don't know what is going on with you mate, but it's definitely not you." He said and walked out.
Jake raised a brow. "What happened?"
"Nothing." Alec muttered. "Can you and Em go help the girls train with some of the seraph blades, so tonight won't be a total mess?"
"Sure thing boss man." Jake said, and him and Emmett left to go to the training room.
Magnus walked over beside Alec. "I haven't known you long, and while I thought maybe I was picking up a…different vibe. What I witnessed a few moments ago, was sexual frustration, or…something between you and Bella."
"No, that's not what that was. Plus, don't you and Bella…have a thing?"
Magnus chuckled. "No, no. Bella is exquisite, I would never…allow myself to take that to another level of intimacy. At one point, I was her best friend, and she…was mine."
Alec looked at him. "What do you see, when you see me and Bella?"
"Hmm. I see that you care about her a great deal. She has love bites on her throat, so I assume you know each other on an intimate level." Magnus said.
Alec hadn't noticed marks on her neck. He never would, and that made him think. Was she with someone else here at the Institute and he didn't realize it? "That wasn't me." He said, and looked away from Magnus.
"Oh? That's interesting." Magnus said. "But you have been intimate, with one another?"
"No." Alec lied. "Magnus, I have too much to worry about, or deal with. Thank you for the details about the exits in the club, I appreciate it but- "
Magnus reached out, caressing Alec's cheek. "I thought maybe I sensed…a different passion in you."
Alec looked at Magnus. "No. That's not what you sensed." He said and took a step back. "Thank you, Magnus, for your help." He said and turned away.
In the training room, Bella changed back into her workout clothes, and stretched some. She admitted she was sore, but not from the workout. She kept thinking about how Jace took her against the locker room door. The power behind Jace, and the way he made her climax so quickly. Then there was Alec, the excitement filled her as he took her so fast, so aggressive on his desk. She was starting to day dream while stretching her arm across her chest. She got a blank look on her face.
"Why can't we?" Bella looked at Magnus. She was twenty-one, technically, but she thought she was nineteen.
Magnus looked at Bella, she was in another argument with Edward. This time it was about something small, but Bella made it a bigger deal. "Bella. You're with Edward, focus on that."
"He's…I keep having dreams. That's what led me here to you. I remember you so clearly. I thought that when I walked into your loft I was coming to an artist party, and when I saw you, I thought that maybe I wasn't crazy, dreaming about a man I've never met."
Magnus sighed. "You're not supposed to be able to remember me. I have to change the formula of my blocks."
"Your blocks?" Bella stared at Magnus so confused.
"Bella, your mother doesn't want you to know about this world. I have to respect her wishes."
"You mean a supernatural world with Demons? With angels? I've been dreaming about it Magnus. I don't understand why, but I am!"
Magnus shook his head. "Oh biscuit. I love you more than you know." He murmured. "I'm not the one meant for you, and you're not meant for me. It's not fair to you."
"Why isn't it fair? In my dreams…I dream of us." Bella said, her voice small.
"Those are only dreams, my dear." Magnus walked towards her, caressing her cheek. "You are meant for greater things. I am a downworlder. I am not worthy of an angel such as yourself." He leaned in, kissed her forehead, then Bella's memory of Magnus and her dreams vanished.
"Bella?" Emmett was standing in front of her, a hand on her arm. "Hey, you with me?"
Bella blinked. "Yeah, just…my memory thing."
Emmett nodded. "Okay, are you feeling, okay?"
"Yeah, sorry." Bella took in a deep breath, trying to shake that feeling of fog. Her relationship with Magnus was a weird one, she was starting to realize. She shook it off and focused on the present.
Emmett wasn't so sure that she was okay, but he just nodded, and walked over to the weapons and pulled a couple blades off the wall. "Okay, these are seraph blades, which I'm sure you know already. We have different sized ones. Only shadowhunters can activate one." He said and handed her the smaller one.
Bella took it, the glow of the weapon illuminating in her grasp. "Right. I've handled the seraph blades in my mom's closet." She said, and turned the blade over in her hand.
"Right, so we have other weapons. Usually, we let the Shadowhunter pick what they feel is comfortable, so take a look, tell me which one sort of just speaks to you." He said and directed her to the wall.
Bella looked at the staves. She could get a better reach with one, and could keep her distance from her opponent. She handed Emmett the seraph blade back and grabbed one of the staves. She turned it over in her hands and then there was a button on the side. She hit it and a blade extended on one side. "That's pretty cool." The blade was glowing like the seraph blades. She motioned for Emmett to give her space, and he did. Bella swung the staff around, testing the weight in her hands, and then she spun it. Something familiar coming back to her, and she twirled it around expertly. She blinked when she finished the motion. "I used to play with a staff when I was a girl in Idris…" She murmured.
Emmett nodded. "You feel comfortable with this one?"
"Yeah. Feels right." She hit the button and the blade retracted.
"Good." Emmett said and went to strike at her, and she defended with the staff, keeping Emmett away from her. He wasn't as quick as Jace was, but she thought maybe he was just slower, because he was bigger than Jace.
Jake walked in with Clary, and stopped in the doorway to watch Emmett and Bella.
Clary was in awe of her sister, at how fast she was picking up the Shadowhunter stuff. She was not as in shape it seemed like her sister, and so she would have to work harder at it.
Simon joined the party, finally waking up with Iz. He had to admit that before all this Shadowhunter stuff, he was believing that he would die a virgin, but Izabell was a goddess, and he was enjoying it if he could. He watched Bella move with such agility, and focus.
Before long Jace joined the viewing party, followed by Alice, and Alec.
Alec watched Bella, the concentration on her face, as her and Emmett battled it out. Emmett increased his speed as they danced around, and he was fighting against her with nothing but himself while she used the staff. He crossed his arms, feeling proud of her as she continued to try her hardest.
Finally Emmett saw his opening, pushing past the staff, and hooked his arm around her waist, he grinned smiling down at her. "You are very quick, even without a speed rune." He noted.
Bella smirked. "Well, I'm smaller than you. You know the saying, the bigger they are the harder they fall."
"I'm familiar."
Bella slipped his hold, taking the end of the staff and hooking his foot, and tripping him.
Emmett fell to the ground, he caught himself, but he smiled up at her. "You are cheeky. I like you."
Bella extended a hand and he grabbed it as she helped him up. "I like you too."
Alec smirked, shaking his head. "Watch your back Em." He said, his voice light.
"Yeah mate, Bella is the secret weapon it seems." Jace said, smiling at her. He wanted so badly to go over and just kiss her.
Emmett smirked, "Yeah, she is." He looked at her winking at her. "Finally met my match." He said smoothly.
Bella chuckled a bit. "I wouldn't go that far. I'm just remembering bits and pieces of some earlier training with Luke when he tried training me in secret. Though I've always been a fast learner." Then something came to her and she snapped her attention over to Alec. "Alec, what if we use a Lure rune."
"Another made up rune?" Alec asked.
"I think so. I can mark specific items with a rune remember." Bella said.
Alec walked down the three little stairs into the training room. "What are you suggesting?"
"A rune that will lure demons to one spot. A spot that we know the ins and outs of. We would have the advantage, yes?"
Alec thought this over. "Yes. But how many demons are we talking about? We still have three wounded. I can't recall any more teams. Shadowhunters are a dying breed without the cup."
"So, we get the cup."
Alec shook his head. "The clave agreed that it's safer inside your mind Bella. They don't want to know the location of the cup until Jocelyn has been recovered, and we can adequately defend against Valentine."
"But we need more Shadowhunters." Bella said.
"That may be true, we can't just pick any random people to be Shadowhunters. Not many humans are aware of this world, we keep it that way."
"Yes, but what about Luke?" Bella asked.
Alec shook his head. "He's a werewolf now."
"What if he wasn't?"
"There's no cure for lycanism." Jace spoke up.
Bella shook her head. "Yes, there is. The cup."
"I'm not following," Alec said, narrowing his eyes in confusion.
"The cup, it turns people into Shadowhunters."
"Yes, people. Luke is a werewolf." Alec reiterated.
Bella nodded. "I know that. But I can do this." She blew out a breath. "Give me paper, or something."
Simon disappeared and returned with a pen and paper and handed it to her.
"Thank you, Simon." Bella said and then spun Alec around to use his back as a surface. She drew a rune, one that was designed different than normal runes. She turned Alec back around and showed him the rune.
"What is it?"
"It's a suppression rune. It will suppress the werewolf in Luke. He'll be mortal." Bella explained.
"How do you know it would work?" Alec asked.
Bella thought about why she was able to know these things. "I think the angels are telling me. I can't explain it. It's only pictures."
Alec took the paper and studied it. "It's risky to try something like this."
"I know."
"I'll talk to the clave." Alec said. "I don't want to do anything outlandish like this until I talk to them."
Bella nodded. "Thank you."
Jake was grinning. "Where the hell have you been hiding all this time?"
"Brooklyn." Bella said lamely.
Clary was excited. "If the Clave approves, then Luke can be a Shadowhunter again, right?"
"If he wants to." Bella said, looking at her sister. "If Luke wants back into this world."
Alec nodded. "That's also a good point. After I talk to the clave, we'll approach Luke with this. He's the leader of the pack here in Brooklyn. So, he may not want to abandon all of that."
Bella agreed. It would be hard on Luke. "Before tonight, Clary needs her veiled rune. We don't want to draw too much attention to ourselves when we go to the club to patrol."
"Yes, thank you for reminding me." Alec said and looked back at the paper. "You are a game changer Bella." He murmured.
Bella smiled. "I don't know about that."
Alec looked back up at her, his blue eyes studying her. "Don't be so modest. You are nothing short of a miracle."
"I'm not that important."
"You are." Alec said, a serious look on his face. "Don't forget that. Ever." He said and then he walked away before he did something stupid, like kiss her in front of everyone.
Emmett came up, draping his arm around her shoulder. "You have impressed the boss man. Good job, oh and I'm going to kiss you now."
"Wha-"She started, but then Emmett pulled her into a kiss, it was light, fun, and then he drew back. Bella blinked at him. "Uh…thanks."
Emmett winked. "Don't mention it. Alright gang, lets do some practice drills before lunch." He said and high fived Jake.
Jace clenched his jaw to keep himself from saying something to Emmett.
Clary laughed out loud. "Why does she get all the kisses?"
Jake smiled. "Can't be left out eh?" He grabbed Clary around the waist and dipped her down and kissed her. "There." He winked, and walked over and grabbed his water bottle.
Clary smiled. "Thank you, Jake." She said playfully.
After training, Bella felt the burn for hunger. All she had was some coffee, and she definitely needed food at this point. She walked into the kitchen, grabbing bread, and started making a sandwich. Emmett walked in soon after her. She glanced up. "Want a sandwich."
Emmett smile, coming up behind her, his body close. "I can make myself something. I did want to propose something though."
"What is that?" She said, still moving to make her sandwich, grabbing stuff from the refrigerator.
"I really do like you."
"Thank you, you're not bad yourself." She said, putting all her ingredients on the bread as he spoke.
Emmett smiled. "There's some really great chemistry here. I would say, let's go get drinks some time, but we don't get all those luxuries. I would very much like to go on a date with you."
Bella turned, leaning against the counter, taking a bite of her sandwich. She smiled, swallowing. "Ah. A date. Sounds interesting. Haven't been on one of those in a long time."
"However, dates…are…" Emmett tried to think of what to say.
"Not a luxury we can afford. Are you propositioning me for sex Emmett?" Bella asked, taking another bite of her sandwich.
Jace walked in, hearing Bella. He didn't know why that made him feel jealous, but it did.
"It sounds so weird hearing it out loud, but…. maybe?" Emmett said with a smile, reaching forward and placing a hand on her waist.
Bella looked up at him, sandwich still in her hand. She offered him a bite and he took it. "I'll think about it." She said with a smile. She really didn't know how to answer something like that. She didn't want to be known for sleeping around the Institute, considering she was barely not a virgin. "But you might not like the answer."
Emmett smiled. "Well then, I'll have to settle for this." He said and leaned in and kissed her softly, gentle.
Jace cleared his throat, letting his presence be known.
Emmett pulled away and sighed. "Always a buzzkill Wayland."
"Always the womanizer Cullen." Jace said with a fake smile. "Think you can keep it in your pants tonight long enough to get the job done?"
"That's a tough one." Emmett teased. "Sure, why not." He said and then fist bumped Jace. "I'm gonna go check on Embry though. He's still out cold." He said and disappeared.
Bella finished her sandwich, and looked at Jace. "What?"
"Nothing. I just uh…it felt strange to see someone else kiss you is all." Jace admitted.
"Hmm. I don't ask people to kiss me." Bella said and sighed. "I'm not going to sleep with him."
Jace nodded. "Not my business if you do."
"I'm not a whore." Bella said.
"Not saying you are. Bella, you're an adult. I figured you were a virgin…this morning, but you…aren't. It's not my business- "
Bella interrupted him. "It's not, but I'm sorry."
Jace reached out for her, his hands at her hips, and he pulled her to him. "If you're going to tell him no." He murmured.
"Jace…" she whispered.
"We are good together." He said and leaned in, his mouth capturing hers.
Bella kissed him back softly. "I don't think I can."
"This morning, that didn't mean anything to you?"
"That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that I'm not the one to sleep around with people Jace."
"Was…it not good?"
Bella sighed. "No, it was amazing. Sex with you is amazing, but I don't want to break your focus, nor do I think it's a good idea."
Jace searched her eyes with his own. "No one has to know."
"I'll know though. What if someone else comes to me and kisses me or asks to have sex? How are you going to feel?" Bella asked.
"Not great. I want you, Bella. I want there to be an us." Jace said gently.
"It would be so easy to fall into something with you Jace. My heart isn't ready for that. I have too much to worry about. I don't want attachments, I have a goal, and that goal is to get my mother back safely. Kill Valentine. That's it." Bella said gently.
Jace nodded. "I'll help you with that. You don't have to do those things alone." He leaned in again, expecting her to pull away, but she stayed there as he kissed her again, his tongue probing her mouth, tasting her. He paused the kiss, leaning his forehead against hers. "I so badly want to take you right here, like this morning." He murmured.
Alec stopped outside the kitchen, hearing Jace and Bella.
"That can't happen." Bella said.
"You said sex was amazing. We could be casual." He offered.
Bella sighed. "I don't know."
"Think about it." Jace said. "We have some downtime right now; I could remind you how amazing this morning was." He said with a smile.
"Tempting." Bella said with a smile.
"Tempting enough to come back to my room? I'll forget that Emmett propositioned you, and when I see his face, I might not want to punch him." Jace joked.
"Don't go punching people. I told you I don't ask people to kiss me."
"Hmm, well. They should ask first?"
"Like you don't?" Bella raised a brow.
Jace smiled. "I apologized before I kissed you the first time."
"Which is weird."
"Is this weird?" His hands moved over her hips to her butt, and he groped her firmly, pulling her to him.
Bella smiled. "Not as weird as you think it is." She breathed, and his mouth covered hers again. He was causing her mind to melt a little. She tried to not think about Alec in this moment, but it was hard.
"I can tell your aroused." Jace murmured.
Alec swallowed, closing his eyes, reigning in the feeling he was getting. How did he not see that one coming? He blew out a breath and then walked into the kitchen, clearing his throat. "Izabell is awake, asking for you Jace." He said, ignoring Bella for the moment.
Jace nodded. "Okay mate. How is she feeling?" He moved away from Bella and walked towards Alec.
Alec had one hand behind his back, and he clenched it, trying to hold in his anger, which he didn't like feeling. "She's awake. A little disoriented. She was worried about you."
Jace nodded and patted Alec's arm, and left the kitchen.
Alec closed his eyes, calming himself, before opening them and looking at Bella. "You slept with Jace." It was calm, not even a tremor in his voice.
"You heard us talking…" Bella murmured.
He could see the mark on her neck now. He hadn't noticed it before Magnus said anything. "I didn't mean to eavesdrop. I was coming to find Jace." He explained.
"Alec I-"
"It's fine."
"It's not, because of the way you're looking at me now. I promise you I didn't plan it. It just happened."
Alec shook his head. "I don't need to know Bella."
"Alec, I don't want you to be mad at me…"
"I'm not mad."
"Then why do you look like you're ready to kill something?" Bella asked, walking towards him.
Alec stopped her. "Don't."
"Alec…"
"Bella, I'm not mad. I just…" What was he? He was mad. He was mad that he felt like he wanted to punch his best friend. "We can never be together. I understand that more than anyone. Be with Jace. He's the better option."
"That's not how it works…" Bella murmured. She ran her hand over her face. "I'm so confused it's not even funny." He muttered.
Alec swallowed. "It's not confusing Bella. I don't want to be with you. You don't want to be with me. It's clear. There should be no confusion."
"If it was clear Alec, don't you think I wouldn't be feeling the way I do? Just moments before, Emmett propositioned me. He kissed me. Does that make you angry?"
"Not as angry as Jace." Alec admitted.
Bella stared at him. "It was Jace wasn't it?"
"What?"
"That's who you were attracted to…" She murmured.
Alec looked away. "Bella, drop it. I'm not going to talk about it with you."
Bella shook her head. "It makes sense…" she murmured.
Alec looked back at her. "Tonight, don't forget to stay close to Jace. You're there to learn, not try and go rogue. Got it?" His voice sounded harsher than he intended.
Bella shook her head. "I'm so stupid." She said and started to walk past him, and he grabbed her arm. She whipped her head around and looked at him. "I wouldn't if I were you."
"Bella. You're not stupid."
"Am I not?" Bella retorted and she pulled her arm from his and walked out of the kitchen, on the brink of tears. She wanted nothing more to just disappear, find her mother on her own, and kill Valentine. Her head was too confused to think about anything else. Things would get too messy, they already were. She just wanted to focus on the task at hand and that was her mother. That's what she would focus on, there was no room for Alec, or Jace. Not even Emmett.
